Diner Reviews
  • "In general one of the best in area for special ocasions and for business dinner"

  • "This was a 5 diamond restaurant according to Mobil and for one of the few times I agree. The food exceptional, the service flawless, the ambience wonderful. It is would be one I would go again a great place if you want to have a conversation that doesn't include a cell phone."

  • "We ate here in August on our way home from vacation. We were so impressed with the food and ambiance, that we made reservations months in advance for our wedding anniversary celebration. We had to drive two and a half hours to get here, but we were certainly, not disappointed. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. I especially loved the chilled strawberry soup and my lobster tail was wonderful. Our server was very attentive and gave me a lovely long stem rose with a container of cookies when we finished our meal. We stayed the night in your beautiful hotel. We hope to make this a yearly event."

  • "It was disappointing for the reputation of the restaurant. Highly rated by AAA, but the food did not live up the standard set by this fine book."

  • "Six of us dined at Scrimshaw and had a very nice meal. We had not dined there in many years. The service was outstanding and the room is very nice. The food was quite good but I would hesitate to call it great.............nothing to complain about but it just did not meet our idea of a truly great dining experience."

  • "We wanted to try this place known for fine dining in our area. The prices weren't too high considering it also included a salad with your meal. I enjoyed our meal, but expected more intense flavors."

  • "Very enjoyable dining experience, great food, great atmosphere and great staff."

  • "The service and the food was top notch but the piano was too loud to have a confortable conversation and the table for two was too long making it hard to have an intimate conversation."

  • "This was a beautful restaurant. We had dinner on a Saturday evening in which there was nice piano music. The food was delicious and there was room enough between tables to enjoy conversation with those we were dining out with."

  • "Solid meal. No complaints. Compliments to the chef. Patrons are not rushed; you can talk without yelling; atmosphere is formal but not overbearing! Service is very good. We'll return in the future."

  • "The meals were well-prepared as you would expect for entrees that are $27-$33 range but not 5-star. It did take a little while to get us our drinks so we ordered drinks and our entrees together. I prefer to sip on a beverage while reading the menu. the potato side was rather unflavorful, seemed more for presentation. All in all a nice dining experience and the piano player was a nice touch, as was the rose for the ladies. I was surprised for a Friday night how empty the Scrimshaw was. Pricey?"

  • "ONE OF THE FINEST RESTAURANTS IN THE NORTHEAST. EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PLACE IS ELEGANT DOWN TO SPECIAL TOUCHES LIKE COOKIES WITH THE CHECK AND ROSES FOR THE LADIES. IT'S NOT CHEAP. BUT, THEN, GETTING WHAT YOU PAY FOR IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE AND SOMETIMES A SURPRISE. SCRIMSHAW IS A MUST ON YOUR DINING LIST. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."

  • "Entering the dining room we were the only people there at 5:30. They sat us right by the piano and by 6:00 piano player was playing and we could not have a conversation. The service level of the restaurant was very good with more attention from the wait staff than the waitress as she was servicing maybe 4-5 tables by dinner's end. Clam casinos left lot to be desired as they were not chopped or diced and actually the clam was not separated from the shell. Main course was overdone. My salmon had very little if any flavoring and my wife's steak was overdone. The potato the only starch offered was a Scrimshaw potato which had the taste of being left over mashed potatoes that were recooked. Vegetable serving was a mini carrot and mini zucchini."

  • "We enjoyed our recent dinner. The presentation of all the dishes and the team service was exceptional. Pricey, but worth it for a special occasion."

  • "The quantity of the food seemed less compared to the price being paid. Service was good. Ambience was nice and quite apt for a romantic dinner."

  • "Enjoyed a terrific dinner for our anniversary. Scrimshaw has the very best fish menu in the area and the service and ambiance is wonderul. Very very pleased."

  • "I hadn't been to Scrimshaw in many years, but it was great to see that the food and service is as great as ever. Scrimshaw is more than a cut above the rest. A large variety of dishes and things you can't get other places. The ambiance is priceless."

  • "I was staying at the Desmond for a conference. I went to dinner at the Scrimshaw on a Wednesday night. The service was appropriately attentive. I ordered an appetizer, entree and dessert with coffee. All three were delicious. The seasoning was perfect; I didn't need to touch the salt/pepper shakers once. I would definitely go back."

  • "We went here after a long drive home to Albany from New jersey. The service was very attentive. The food was delicious. A nice perk was when we were handed a canvas bag filled with the Times Union Sunday Paper and bagels with cream cheese for our morning after! We will definitely return."

  • "This restaurant was no better than any other good restaurant in the area. My husband had veal Oscar ( which was made correctly) but the white asparagus was so tough he couldn't cut it. My swordfish was overlooked to the point of mushiness. Appetizers (escargot and oysters ) were very good; house salads had some interesting components and were good, and the strawberry Napoleon was excellent. If you want ambience and better than average service and so- so food this is your place. Bill without drinks, but with coffee about $110 not including tip."

  • "My wife and I visited on Friday evening for a special birthday celebration. She ordered a featured trout dish that arrived with wonderful presentation. The trout, however, had a very strong "fishy" odor and taste. So strong, in fact, that she was barely able to swallow the first bite. The staff was great and removed the dish and offered to replace the item with another selection. However, with my dinner having already been served, the romantic ambiance of the meal was lost and she opted not to reorder! To their credit, the manager removed the charge for her dinner from our bill. Overall, the setting was beautiful and staff was very professional, but it just wasn't meant to be our night at this location."

  • "My wife and I made reservations at Scrimshaw as part of an overnight trip to the region. Needless to say we were rather disappointed in our experience given the accolades the venue has received. We sat down at our table and waited almost 15 minutes before anyone stopped by to present the wine list. Then another 15 minutes for our menus. Considering there were only three other tables, the service should have been more attentive. My wife had the lobster bisque, which was essentailly void of lobster, and her entree was oversalted. My food was decent, although I expected more from a "fine dining" establishment. The restuarant is nice in terms of decor and the piano was nice to listen to. We'll find someplace else next time."

  • "We had a business dinner for the three on a Wednesday evening. The menu selections were impressive but the prime rib I wanted was not available that evening. Everything else was very good. The food, wine, service, charm of the restaurant impressed us."

  • "We sat in the front area of the restaurant with piano played in the background. Following appetizers we both had the Seafood Platter - a combination of shrimp, scallops, sole, and lobster tail - which was cooked perfectly, done but still moist. A fantastic evening."

  • "The chef came out and had a conversation with us. I had requested a round table and it was provided. It was a birthday celebration and the staff made much of the birthday person including a candle on her dessert."

  • "We had our valentines day celebration here and we picked the Scrimshaw because is has been a place we often visit for special occasions. The culinary staff created a wonderful meal and the desserts are delicious. The wait staff are amazing and very attentive to our dinner details. Anyone would love the classy and enjoyable meal at the Scrimshaw."

  • "Outstanding service, warm, friendly and attentive. Quiet, pretty room, great place to bring family or special someone. Menu from 1980s still has a place as traditional American, with boatloads of seafood. New changing menu items were excellent, eg Roasted Black Cod was delicious, delicate and rich. Accompaniments were flavorful but in general, too heavy-handedly oily. Add salads, please, we need greens, we like greens."

  • "The beer at the bar was expensive ;over five bucks! The place is old school, one look at the wait staff and you get it. We were there on Thursday and the restaurant was pretty empty."

  • "Very professional from the front door to the plate. Engaged, prompt, knowledgable service team. Wonderful food preparation and execution. The only slight error was the espresso that I was served after I ordered a cappuccino ( it may have been my error). Server quickly converted it into a cappuccino. Both dining room mgr and chef stopped at our table to inquire about our experience. Nice extras included a wonderful pianist playing at just the right volume in our dining room, fresh baked Almond macaroons presented with the bill and a fresh long stem rose given to the women at departure! Very elegant experience!"

  • "It was our 4th or 5th dinner their, but it had been about 2 years and the place has slipped. The staff no longer wears colonial costume and it now feels like a mid level eatery with high level prices. We requested a table for 2 near the piano for our anniversary. We did get a table set for two with 3 chairs around it and the 4th chair shoved against the wall, not a huge deal but it set the tone. We ordered a bottle of wine and I ordered the New England clam chowder, which came one minute after the bread, so right away I was feeling rushed(the clam chowder was bland with only little bits of clam looking like they came out of the can that way. The Scrimshar salad was ice cold like it had been made previously. Overall food just OK. Diapointing"

  • "Bad service, food sounds good, but not up to pricing. The menu is old and the food needs to be updated...how often do you see veal oscar on the menu."
