Diner Reviews
  • "We ordered popcorn for the table and a cup of delicious popcorn arrived that we carefully selected our portions between 4 of us. The same thing happened with the box of vegetables arriving in a "box" with a cup of vegetables. It was surprising as popcorn and vegetables are typically inexpensive. The salmon, kale popcorn and browned cauliflower were good. I'm glad we each ordered an entree or we would've left hungry yet."

  • "Loved our experience. Service was fantastic, food totally unique and VERY delicious. My one complaint is that this place is beer/wine/sake only. But I still give this place five stars, for originality as well as a great overall experience."

  • "This was some of the most inventive yet approachable food I've had n LA (and I've been to places like Ink and Bazaar). The chef does a great job of having fun with the food, all within a very comfortable, neighborhood environment. 100% RECOMMEND!"

  • "Great wine list. Impressive and inventive menu - but not everything works. Seems like a testing ground. The server we had was pushy and rude. He openly tries to upsell us and was tacky about it."

  • "Great food and service. The owner was so nice made you feel so welcome wether you were there all the time or if it was your first time like we were. Can't wait to go back. We walked to the Saban theater had a great date night"

  • "Even though they don't have their liquor license, their cocktails made from wine and sake are delicious! I wish their home-brewed ginger beer and cola weren't the same price as their alcoholic drinks =T Or at least, they should be in bigger glasses."

  • "Food and Drinks were so overpriced. The smallest portions for the money ever. The bartender was incredible, as was the wait staff."

  • "I had a truly awesome experience at Scratch Bar. The menu was ambitious yet they managed to do everything right. All from scratch. As I was told. It was once of those nights when we gathered up a bunch of friends and ordered almost everything on a restaurant's menu. Something is bound to disappoint. Wouldn't you think so? Perhaps it was our lucky night (or the restaurant's lucky night?), the general consensus is that every single dish we tried was great. Likes and dislikes just came down to the matter of personal preference. I enjoyed my dinner and I really appreciate how knowledgeable the staff are. Dishes were always presented to the table with enthusiasm. Wine recommendation was to the point."

  • "Everything was good, but nothing was all that exciting, no matter how enthusiastic the wait staff made it seem. This is not Bazaar."

  • "Though the service was outstanding and had attractive ambiance, the food didn't cut it. It was too experimental with not the right mix of ingredients."

  • "I picked this place for a girls dinner because of the interesting menu. My friends and I are all foodies and this didn't disappoint. Joe was our server and he suggested a great bottle of wine from the list that he had created. Loved everything. Music was a little loud but we didn't have to yell. We all left saying we would definitely return."

  • "Definitely do a tasting menu! The portions are small enough to not get too stuffed, but to try a bunch of things and enjoy the flavors. Everything is crafted to create an amazing flavor profile. So many interesting dishes and absolutely nothing disappointed. The staff was super attentive and was able to make recommendations. They forgot about an appetizer that we weren't really clear about ordering for sure so it came out a bit late in the servings, but offered us a round of beers (totally didn't need to)."

  • "In fact, you may find the bee's knees on the menu one night. Brilliant food. The best food I had in a very long time. Spectacular wine, Innovative presentation, charming staff. Such a wonderful evening that we made a date for the chef's tasting menu immediately. This is a place to go with at least 4 foodies for sharing. LET THE TASTES BEGIN."

  • "From the moment we walked in, we loved everything about this place. Every server that we came in contact with was extremely friendly and helpful. Our server, Adam, spent quite a bit of time with us, explaining the food, the drinks, the history of the restaurant, etc. We ordered the 9-course Premium menu and could not have been happier. Our favorites were the chicken and waffle (it's not chicken, but it's much better than chicken!), the green mussel shooter, and a cauliflower dish that I don't believe was on the menu. We will be going back soon for the Chef's Counter!"

  • "We ate at Scratch Bar for DineLA and it was quite small and busy, so I recommend making a reservation before. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation, so our table was not quite ready but were offered to get drinks from the bar which was nice. We shared a table with another couple, which I didn't mind, and ordered the $45 dollar tasting menu with a bottle of Pinot Noir Au Bon Climat that was recommended by the waiter. It was very good and complimented all of the dishes very well. All of the dishes that we ordered were delicious, very complex in flavors and definitely not like something i've had before. Our waiter was also very helpful and did not rush us at all despite the business of the restaurant. Overall a wonderful experience."

  • "Went here for a 6-course dining experience for 2-people from a travelzoo deal. So glad I did. Food was pretty good. Small plate serving sizes so be aware that if you go in hungry you might end up spending a lot of money. Atmosphere was so laid back & intimate. I don't recommend this place for groups over 4 people. Love the plaid/ country style dress of the servers, bartenders etc., the mason jars for cups, the wood tabletops. The place is like an upscale intimate country dining experience with american & japanese fusion types of foods. I would recommend: 1. the pork belly & raw oysters 2. King Crab in pudding 3. Dry Hangar Steak 4. Salmon w/ crispy salmon skin 5. Mussels & unagi sake shooter"

  • "Loved all the unique food pairings and combinations. Smoking goat cheese literally comes out under a glass lid with smoke inside. Pork belly oyster delish but it was ONE BITE. Menu is quite small and the portion size is VERY SMALL. I am a slender woman who does not eat a lot but their "main dish" which they recommend sharing is tiny and costs $22. So we paid $44 for 2 main dishse of hangar steak & it still was not a lot of food. As you may know, hangar steak is very inexpensive (compared to finer cuts of meat) so charging $22 for 6 thin slices is a bit of a rip off. Dinner was around $150 per couple BEFORE TIP .. that did include about 2 drinks each so I find that to be on the expensive side considering it was closer to $180 with gratuity."

  • "You can't go wrong at Scratch Bar… every dish is more innovative and delicious than the last!! Some of my faves are the "chicken" & waffle bite, roasted bone marrow and sourdough, and the lemon & parm kale chips. Definitely DO NOT skip dessert! The ice-cream cone is a fun and delicious way to end your meal. They recently added a new dessert (carmel apple pannacotta) to the menu and it might be my favorite dessert of all time! If you haven't been, GO… and then go back."

  • "Scratch|Bar is a winner. The space is not very big, which makes it intimate for couples or small groups, probably not great for large parties. The waitstaff was on their game and each person brought a unique perspective to the menu and what choices my friend and I should make. Started off with an excellent '02 zinfandel and moved into garlic/thyme popcorn, smoked goat cheese, corn on the cob, lollipop kale, and pork belly/oyster bites (had to have two), all of which were incredible and left us with no room for entrees. Dessert on the other hand...the vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles was insane - especially the little waffle cone it is served in - as was the dark chocolate/cayenne candy bar. All in all a great experience. Go!"

  • "We had an ok meal. It was not what we were expecting, while it was a Sunday night didn't realize the tasting menu from a guest chief was the only food option. As a result it turned out to be a very expensive evening and we were limited on food options. Music was unnecessarily loud."
    Dined on 1/19/2014
  • "Tasting menu is a truly unique experience. Every dish is both creative and delicious. Music is a play list selected by the staff and is excellent as well. The restaurant is clearly run by very creative people. The operations, however, seem a little inexperienced which was off-putting at first. It wasn't until the third of 10 courses that my doubts about the restaurant faded."
