A word from Scarpetta
In May 2008, Chef Scott Conant opened Scarpetta in the Gansevoort Market Historic District. An Italian expression that means “little shoe” -- or the shape bread takes when used to soak up a dish -- Scarpetta represents the pure pleasure of savoring a meal down to the very last taste. The restaurant’s seasonally-inspired Italian dishes offer farm-fresh ingredients and clean, earthy flavors that pay homage to Conant’s heritage and time in Italy.

  • "What an absolutely incredible dinner! From the moment we sat down, our waiter, John, was eager to help us choose a delicious meal and inform us of everything Scarpetta has to offer. He even heard us discussing another restaurant and sent over their general manager, who had previously worked at that restaurant, to converse with us. The pastas, which are all made at Scarpetta, were so fresh and flavorful. We received some complimentary cookies and moscato for dessert! Such a pleasant experience with truly refined, exciting food. I will certainly be back!"

  • "This unassuming storefront serves some of the best seafood I have ever eaten. The servers were very efficient describing all of the items on the limited seasonal menu. They are also very quick to tell you, unprompted,what to order. I felt they had been given an incentive to push certain menu items because both servers pushed the same meals/appetizers. The octopus appetizer was very tender and delicious. The burratta mozzarella was just ok. We actually left some of it uneaten. Within seconds the entrees arrived. I ordered the Bronzino and my friend had the red snapper. Both were very clean and fresh but not very hot. Our meal was ordered,served and consumed in less than 45minutes. It is obvious they want you in and out."

  • "Took my cousin from out of town out to dinner...had been to Scarpetta several times. There were 5 of us and all of our entrees were amazing. Super $$$$ though. Most shocking, a Black Russian at the bar was $17!!! More expensive then one of the signature drinks. Would def come back for a special occasion."

  • "I was a fan of scarpetta until this time. There were a number of things that were amiss that you expect from a quality restaurant. 1. Seated next to the bar instead of the main dining room despite prior reservations. 2. Table was so small that we could barely fit anything post the bread basket, I ordered less food since I did not want to juggle plates 3. Ordered my once favorite truffled mushrooms & polenta and a market veg salad. I kid you not it came out in 3 mins flat, I like fast service but this seemed fast food 4. I always order the spaghetti here which I love, however this time the sauce lacked depth of flavor that comes from cooking it for a while and the sauce had tomato seeds, bad! Unless something changes, it's on my no-go list."

  • "As the title suggests, the food is beyond amazing. However, the service left much to be desired. After being seated, we waiting 25 minutes before anyone came to say hello (other than the nice bussers who kept refilling out water). Finally a manager happened to wander by and took a drink order. A waiter eventually appeared without apology and was helpful, though pushy. After taking our order, we never saw him again. Perhaps that was for the better, no? Luckily, we were a very patient and relaxed group out for a nice meal and Scarpetta provided that in spades. The Spare Rib and Bone Marrow Angolotti was amaxing, and the Duck Breast and Fois Gras Ravioli was divine. Hallelujah!"

  • "Food is pretty good although a bit heavy. Some of the dishes had way too much cream and butter. Love the fact that they have vegetarian menu. Service on the other hand is terrible. The wait staff we had seemed completely uninterested in being there. The people bringing the food simply would drop the food on the table and wouldn't even bother explaining the food. If tipping wasn't the expected norm as it is these days I would have given a zero tip! Bottom line I would go more often if service was better."

  • "I have been really looking forward to this evening and sometimes that means disappointment. Not this time. Our waiter, our table and the meal was everything I had hoped it would be. Two pasta dishes and the goat. Amazing. We bought the cookbook and will have to hide it so my wife does not make every meal with the table Stromboli. If she does, I will weigh 600 pounds."

  • "Notwithstanding that I have been there a few times, we got the "out of towner" treatment last Sunday. We were seated in the bar. When I asked whether we could sit in the main dining room, they said that no seats were available. However, we saw plenty of three tops get seated after we were shown our table. Once we were seated, it took a while for anyone to even acknowledge us. After we ordered, our food came extremely fast in an obvious effort to move us along and, I presume, free up the table. Service was inattentive and poor. Food is good but not good enough to put up with that sort of treatment. They have definitely lost my business."

  • "I was not sure how I was going to feel about this restaurant after reading some (not many) mixed reviews, but my mind is made up! It was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had! From the hostess to the dessert it was an absolute pleasure. I had the spaghetti, it was heavenly, my niece had an incredible pasta dish made with beets and pistachios, like nothing I have ever tasted. Get the olive oil cake for dessert! Possibly the best dessert I've ever eaten. The waiter was attentive, knowledgeable and extremely pleasant. Go, you will not be disappointed."

  • "Overcooked pasta and undercooked fish, hardly a recommendation for a satisfying evening. The faulty execution in the kitchen was surprising. We ordered the recommended pasta--a simple spaghetti with tomato and basil--and were served a bowl of mush. The black cod had to be sent back to be properly cooked. The gnochetti and the black sea bass were better. Two for four might be a good average in baseball, but not in a restaurant of this stature."

  • "We were late getting there due to traffic, they seated us as soon as we got there and we were able to select a table outside. The waitstaff were friendly and attentive. They provided info and incite on the dishes. The braised octopus appetizer was fantastic, cooked perfectly. I had the tagliolini with lobster and asparagus and it was very good, fresh and light. My spouse had the spiced duck breast which was fantastic and cooked perfectly and anyone who has had duck not cooked properly, knows how important this is. The meal was great. We were too full for dessert, so no review of the sweets!"

  • "Fantastic menu selection. I chose a duck entree and my guest was torn. The waiter was superb, he made a recommendation of the very simple spaghetti...I figured it would be good. He guaranteed it would be great…it was not great it was superb. Never have I had spaghetti that good! The sommelier reviewed our order and the wine choice he came over and clarified what we desired for our meal. After about a 5 minute conversation he guided us to a wine I had simply passed…it was amazing. Love the service, love the décor, it was an incredible experience all around!"

  • "Not sure what the deal was but my wife and I felt that we were unwanted. I chose the place for her birthday and we were really excited. I had been there a few times before (I had previously worked around the corner at Food Network so it was easy to go) and this was just not a good experience for us. I hated that her birthday dinner had turned out rotten and we both left feeling terrible. The food was tasty but the service was awful."

  • "My wife and I had dinner at Scarpetta prior to an oldies concert at the Beacon Theatre and it was a memorable kickoff to the evening. The staff was outstanding, making us feel immediately welcome. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgable. Service was impeccable. The bread basket was outstanding and came with olive oil, mascarpone butter and tomato-eggplant spread that was awesome. For an appetizer, we shared braised short ribs with faro risotto. My wife had the spaghetti with tomato and basil and I tried the duck and fois gras ravioli. The pastas are all made fresh on the premises and were both perfect. Our shared dessert was chocolate cake with salted caramel gelato. The entire experience was first-rate. Chef Conant has a real winner here!"

  • "What a wonderful conclusion to a week of sampling NY fine dining. Not only was the food excellent/divine, but the service far exceeded our expectations. Our server made the experience for us, recommending our courses and our wines. He did not miss with his selections. We felt that our satisfaction and enjoyment was his sole purpose that evening. A very rare experience anymore in fine dining."

  • "What a great find! Everyone from the hostess, to the bartender to our server was super attentive! I chose this restaurant as I am a vegetarian and they have a separate vegetarian menu. My sister and niece ordered from the regular menu and I ordered from the vegetarian and we were all very very pleased. The soups, salads, entrees were all a 10 and the deserts were to "die for". I would highly recommend this restaurant."

My sole complaint is Scarpetta's inhospitable policy of making incomplete groups of diners stand around uncomfortably until everyone arrives; only then will the belligerently officious staff allow everyone to be seated. (Once diners are seated, however, service is exemplary.)"

  • "For the kind of prices they charge you should be getting a decent dining experience to say the least, no? The restaurant takes way more reservations than they can handle and you will have random parties of people stand over you and actually lean their bodies on your shoulders while you dine because they have no where to go. My husband had to get up from his seat to go speak to the maitre d because asking our server was not enough. The food is not what it used to be as is the service. Which is such as shame because this place used to be so consistent and dependable. We have been there many times and have always enjoyed our dining experience there and are very disappointed that this recent visit was so traumatizing."

  • "The food was overall pretty great. The bread and eggplant spread was excellent. Apps were good and entrees were generally good. However, I got the tagilolini and it was quite bland and noodles were overcooked so I didn't eat much of it. It was our anniversary and had noted that in the reservation on open table, but nothing special was done for us in regards to a dessert with some writing stating "happy anniversary". The food was pretty good so I would still come back for some good flavorful pasta dishes."

Quite nice bar as well as the seating area. broadly disappointed with the food. very expensive for what you were getting. their flagship spaghetti with tomato/basil was just mediocre. fish was a disaster. octopus appetizer was good but quite ordinary. for the price paid ($20 for 2 tiny bits of grilled squid), I would have expected something more unique and interesting. wine list had a crazy markup. only a handful (around 5%) of wines for less than $100. Said differently, the place was priced at a wrong point. I don't mind paying for great dining. The issue is that this was priced as "great" but was just "OK-ish""

  • "I have come here twice for my birthday. One time I ordered the mushroom polenta, ravioli (which I think was a special), and the famous pasta with tomato sauce. Each dish was perfect. I went again the other night and just ordered the pasta - again, it was so perfect. Fresh ingredients and delicious. I asked the waitress for a wine recommendation and she was very knowledgable and made a great pairing. Be warned, though, we had 2 of the pastas and 2 glasses of wine and the dinner was nearly $100 with tip. Wow..."

  • "Have been half a dozen times over the years - but Monday nights trip with out of town visitors reminded me how rare it is in this industry to stay good forever. A 75 minute break between apps and our pasta course could have been made tolerable if our waiter didn't literally hide from us when we tried to find out what was happening. We ultimately had to flag down a manager to get anything done. Throwing in a third and fourth pasta to share - not bad. Better, maybe something that added to the meal (or took away from the bill!) A 3.5 hour dinner on a Monday night certainly hadn't been the plan! The food - still solid - but not what it once was either. Under seasoned and over oiled - only a bit better than a neighborhood Italian spot. "
