Little known restaurant but 10+ dining experience. Wonderful, professional service. Food is outstanding -- equals the best high end Italian in the City. Prices are fair, considering. Ate at Il Mulino last week, and whereas both are excellent, Scalini is better "value" with a FAR more accessible wine list for normal people. Prix Fix menu is a bargain. The food was wonderful and the selection was quite varied. Tables were sufficiently far apart so that it was possible to have pleasant conversation at the table. The bill had a fairly substantial error--which I hope was just a mistake. They charged, (and corrected after brought to their attention) us for an extra bottle of rather expensive wine that we were drinking. While they did correct the bill there were no overt apologies made. I requested a quiet table for my birthday for two and we were given exactly that. Every course was delicious and it was difficult to choose from the extensive menu. We each got something different so we could try many of the dishes out and they were all wonderful. We went early evening and the noise level was quiet, but got a bit louder as more people arrived. Not outrageously noisy though. We were there for almost four hours and were not hurried on our way. The staff could not have been kinder. Would most definitely go back. Lump crabmeat that wsa very fresh and the sauce complemented it but was not overpowering. A light dish. I got the red snapper special in a vegetable broth. All was very nice, but the fish was breaded and pan fried. This could have taken away from the fresh fish flavor. They gave us two complementary raviolis with a cream truffle sauce. They were very good but very rich. They also gave us complimentary dessert wine and pineapple gelato before our actual dessert came. This was very nice, but it was just too much food for me! The dining space is very romantic, with arched ceilings and low lighting. One suggestion would be to have the waiters, not the manager, handle the sommelier duties. From the moment we arrived we were made feel special and welcome . This was one of the best dining experiences we ever had.
The food was outstanding, surprisingly large portions. We ordered the crab pasta appetizer and also the squid ink pappardelle and the kitchen sent us the risotto as well. All three dishes were phenomenal.
The main courses were equally great. I can not find a bad thing to say at all about this restaurant. The web site shows some dated decor that does not do the true space justice. It seems they got new chairs and lost the awful ballony window treatments. I can not have dairy - no butter/no milk - which sometimes presents a problem to a chef.
Scalini was more than happy to accommodate this.
There is an amazing array of choices sure to fit any palette - meat eater, vegetarian, fish lover...you name it.
For the cost of the evening, they provided a great amount of food and extras.

I've never eaten anything there that wasn't delicious. In addition to their completely extraordinary menu they usually have at least three or four special appetizers and as many entrees, which are always delicious. I couldn't possibly rave enough about it. It's in Bouley's former space on Duane Street, replete with vaulted gothic arches, stained glass windows and views of the park. The staff is very friendly, the seating is mostly banquet, and the wine list is one of the most impressive in the city. It's one of my two or three favorite restaurants in the city. As everyone states you are greeted by well dressed well poised men who are clearly trained to be warm in the classic Old School manner. The pastas are soft and at least what we had showed a focus on classical butter oriented flavors, not olive oil. All quite delicious - and the chef's tastes sent out were all great. Wine list is nearly all focussed on Italians - with a few Super Tuscans - even a rare bargain. The food was perfect, the wine list was very good (a bit pricey because of all the imports) and the service was excellent. We did not feel rushed, never had too much food in front of us and it was just a perfect night. The selection is so vast it is difficult to actually pick one thing. Portion size was great as well. The manager took the time to go around and visit with every table. To top off a great evening, when we got the bill it was surprisingly lower than we expected. I decided to give it a try as we had a group of 6 people who were all foodies and it got such rave reviews. The restaurant was very crowded and they seated us in the private wine cellar room which was such a nice touch. The service was great, our waiter very friendly and recommended great wine. The food was outstanding, everything from the appetizers, entrees and desserts and they even brought us the pasta w/sausage as an extra for the table since nobody ordered it and it was a highly recommended dish. Next time I would defintiely order that as well, it was terrific! The short ribs and the arctic char were my favorite entrees.
