A word from Scalini Fedeli - Chatham
Scalini Fedeli was opened by chef-owner Michael Cetrulo in 1995 and very quickly became New Jersey's highest rated Italian restaurant. Rated excellent by the New York Times in 1996 and New Jersey's favorite restaurant in Zagat's Survey in 2001 and New Jersey Monthly's best Italian and top 25 overall in 2007. Highlights from the menu include soft egg yolk raviolo with black truffle butter, pignoli crusted salmon with artichoke and mint agnolotti in a light tomato and basil broth and braised short ribs of beef with a cherry pepper and port glaze. Set in an historic building built in 1740, the atmosphere is slightly formal with Tuscan style vaulted ceilings finished with Venetian plaster. Tapestry and antique mirrors adorn the walls.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The great asset of this restaurant is food; it’s not heavenly but solid good. The service is not as good, more of a pretentious good than well-mannered good; lacks attention and spotty at times. It’s a great place for celebrating events and its atmosphere, ambience certainly compensate for the service."

  • "When you first pull up to Scalini Fedeli, you may think you pulled up to the wrong place, as it looks like someone’s house from outside. When you step in, it’s a different story. Their high arched ceilings with fresco style walls are beautiful. The staff are attentive and highly knowledgeable. The most important thing here is the food… Its AMAZING! Our group of four all ordered different meals and everyone’s was fantastic! The prefix menu is extensive and VERY reasonably priced for the experience. I’ve been to Scalini four times over the past couple of years and its consistently great. Its not a very trendy, Tribeca type place with a booming bar. Its more low key and romantic... great for special occasions."

  • "It was really good, As good as the raving reviews: well…. I'd give it a 3.8. Very good food, don't get me wrong, One iof the best Veal chops I've ever had. Not fit for families unless your kids eat very maturely. Very romantic, lovely dining room and attentive if slow and non-chalant service. For the prices of the standard pasta dishes, using DiCecco is unacceptable. Don't serve pasta for these prices if you're going to use packaged, store brand (albeit very good stare brand) pasta At least some artisanal pasta or source a fresh pasta from a local provider, I'd eat here again if I was in the area, but wouldn't make a special trip there based on the meal we had."

  • "I must say that the attention to detail is poor. In additon to reminding them that it was my girllfriends bithday when I confirmed the reservation, I reminded them again when I arrivd for dinner. Nonetheless, the evening came and went and not a single dessert arrived with a candle. I was mortified. My girlffriend accussed me of forgetting it ws her birthday. On the way out i asked the maitre"d what had happened and he shrugged his shoulders and sinply said "oh sorry'. Needless to say i wont be dining at Scalini Fedeli any more. They just simply dont care. Ruined a birthday with complete disregard."

  • "My wife and I had not to SF in a while. We have been to other fine dining places in the area and noticed a consistent inconsistency in the food. We went to SF for her birthday recently and was very pleasantly surprised. The food and service was as good if not better than our last outing there. SF as she dubbed 'our new go to for fine dining'. We haven't been disappointed once."

  • "My wife and I had an outstanding meal with superior service. We never felt rushed and were able to really enjoy our meal! Sensational experience!"

  • "Amazing place from top to bottom. Hands down some of the best Italian food you will ever have!"

  • "We have been to Scalini Fedeli over a dozen times and always had great service and a memorable meal. While the food was prepared well, nothing over cooked or undercooked the food tasted the same with the same sauce. My ravioli was tasty but with too much of the same tasting sauce there was no excitement or contrast. The lamb chop while prepared perfectly lacked enough seasoning and too little of the same tasting sauce. While I know this to be a loud place, it seemed even noisier. We were sandwiched between two tables of 9 & 12 people and the noise level was unbearable. Service for the first time was not acceptable."

  • "We have been to SF before and brought our friends, this time, for a celebration. The Pappardelle in a braised veal shank & marrow sauce w/ minced cherry pepper & a hint of Italian mascarpone was exceptional as was the Spaghettini “arrabiata” w/ mushrooms, black olives & minced Spanish anchovy in a spicy tomato & basil sauce. The other apps and entrees were very tasty. The only comment I have is that the bread was mundane compared to the food. Pretzel rolls, cut in half, were the same kind that I buy at Costco, for sliders. The olive rolls seemed a little stale. Both breads were served cold. A crusty semolina bread, served warm, would do better at SF."

  • "We have always loved Scalini Fedeli. It is expensive for sure, but the food is always excellent, the service always excellent, attentive but not intrusive, and the atmosphere is always rich and romantic. We haven't been there in a while, but our recent visit was as good as old times. The portion sizes for main courses is perfect, but humorously skimpy with desserts (especially given the prices). Good wine list, and the menu is extensive enough that anyone, whether a vegetarian, plain or gourmet, etc., can find something good. Many restaurants change and go bad over time, this one is maintaining course very nicely. Great for special or romantic occasions. Not a good choice for small or unruly kids, probably best for adults."

  • "Another outstanding meal at Scalini Fideli. Arguably one of the best restaurants in the tri-state area; no need to travel to NYC. Service at all levels is impeccable. A great way to start the weekend."

  • "If you want excellent food, beautifully presented with great but unobtrusive service this is the place to go. It is the place to really celebrate that special occasion or just to go and enjoy a wonderful meal"

  • "Scalini Fedeli is a wonderful restaurant and everything that makes a restaurant great was evident that night: wonderful table and table service, fabulous food and a charming host. Keep up the great work!"

  • "How do they do it? Reasonably priced prix fixe menu of three courses of consistently sublime food plus bread, a complimentary amuse, a sorbet palate cleanser and a cookie tray with dessert plus a nice atmosphere and attentive service. The best food of any of my favorites. I dream about the papardelle with braised veal shank glaze, hot cherry peppers and mascarpone appetizer. It is genius. It is not just veal shank glaze. It is little chunks of osso bucco. If I had to pick only one restaurant to go to for the rest of my life it would be Scalini Fedeli."

  • "From Piatti Prima to Piatti Mezzo, to the Finale, it was a triple threat to choose which succulent offering on the menu would be the correct choice lest I pass up on something better. It was the old problem of the one-eyed cat in the fish store. At the end of the meal I wanted to say "more of everything, please". And as the juices started to flow (you know the feeling you get when you enter an Italian delicatessen and your mouth waters and it hurts behind your ears and down your jaw) I lusted at the choice made by my two guests. Try the ummm! Try anything and you won't be disappointed with anything from beginning to end. The best in Chatham, New Jersey."

  • "Just celebrated a friend's birthday with dinner at Scalini Fedeli - Chatham. The four of us enjoyed our delicious dinners from the appetizers through dessert. The "extras" are always appreciated: Chef's appetizer, Coconut Milk [after entree] and of course the beautiful room and comfort makes this restaurant a top dining experience. Looking forward to my next visit!!"

  • "Scalini has been a "favorite" for many years. Had dinner there last night, and we were reminded why it is a favorite......from the "enjoy your evening" greeting from the valet to the "it is good to see you again" from the maitre'd. Last night, we made it a point to try something different on the menu, getting away from our favorite scallops, shrimp and duck. We tried the chicken liver ravioli, sheeps milk tortellini, the salmon special. Each was outstanding, a reward for exploring the menu and trying something new!"

  • "Rushed into our seat and thrown into the prix fixe menu right away. Smoked salmon served on top of soggy bread? Lack of seasoning on the duck breast, tasted bland and gamey. I have had the pleasure of eating at many nice restaurants in nj and ny and find that my evaluation of my experience at scalini fedeili generous at a rating of poor.I should have went to serenade across the street. What a disappointment."

  • "Have eaten here before. Remembered it fondly. Reserved Valentine's Day on Open Table so unaware of special menu, almost 2x the normal price. Stayed to enjoy, regardless. Not certain if we will return. Had to ask abt an included menu item when we noticed we had not received it. Confused look on waiter's face but no apology. We got the starter item after our appetizer course. Food was good, not outstanding, but service was perfunctory on the part of the waiter. If you are looking for an special occasion destination you should give it a try but can't say that we would be certain that you would leave raving. Would definitely ask for different waiter if we found ourselves in his section. Sorry we don't know his name."

  • "From the moment we walked in the door everything was perfect! The ambiance of the room was very comfortable and relaxing. Every morsel of food was exquisite. My taste buds were in heaven! We were there during the week and able to bring a nice bottle from our wine cellar without a corkage fee. The only drawback is the number of mouthwatering selections on the menu (plus specials) makes choosing a long and difficult process. What a dilemma!"

  • "I have been here before but not for a while. I could see why people are saying the food quality is starting to slide. Very good but not quite to the standards expected at this price point. The reason I will never go back is the attitude. The entrees took a very long time to come out which in of itself is not a problem. But then to have the nerve to tell us that people are waiting for our table the minute we pay the check?! That wasn't the worst of it. I go to get my coat and the coat check person is not there. No big deal, I can handle taking my coat off a hanger. Next thing I know the coat check woman is yelling at me that she was in the bathroom and I need to have more patience. Probably better choices available at this price level."

  • "This is now our third visit in 18 months. The food and service is uniformly fantastic. In this restaurant. you are never rushed. We had reservations for 7 pm. We lost track of time talking to good friends, and did not leave until 10:30 pm. The table to our right had diners who arrived before us and were still there when we left. The table to our left turned over three times before we departed. So, if you want to have a leisurely and elegant dinner, this is the place to go. Also appreciate the BYOB, although the restaurant also has an extensive wine list. About the only negative in three visits is that the noise level can be somewhat high. However, it was moderate on this most recent visit, a Friday nite - even though the place was filled."

  • "I love Scalilni Fedeli. The food is consistently good, the service is attentive but not rushed, and the atmosphere makes for a special occasion, every time. I had scallops carpaccio, which were superb and veal scallopini, which was very tasty, as well as a wonderful chocolate dessert, and left quite satisfied, but no moreso than any of the other guests, all of whom were impressed by the entire experience and loved the food. Can't wait for the next time."

  • "Disappointing. Stale rolls to start food service. Sauce overwhelmed duck order, and fish subpar for a restaurant rated in Zagats NJ with a 27. For our desserts , it appeared that kitchen was running out of chocolate truffle cake ( nothing special) as various globs of it were slapped on dinner -sized plates. Service was perfunctory."

  • "My girlfriend and I arrived 10 min before the kitchen closed. Ibspite of this, the staff welcomed us, gave us time to settle in and decide on what to order even prepared a soufflè (which rakes 20 min to make) and not once did we feel rushed. Oh and did I mention that the food wad amazing. The scallop carpaccio was very good. The mushroom ravioli was on point. The short rib extremely tender and flavorful. To the entire staff, we say thank you for a great experience and a fantastic meal. We will see you again."

  • "The food here is consistently good to very good. It is an excellent value. You get a three course meal for around $54. There are some upcharge items such as the crab and mascarpone crepes I had and the dessert soufflé but you really do not need to stray off the beaten menu to have an excellent dining experience. My wife had the soft egg yolk raviolo (terrific) and a snapper special. I had the crepes and a salmon special. All were very good, nicely prepared without a lot of drama. Surroundings are elegant but the noise level is very high. Service can be a bit stiff but is always attentive. Overall a very nice place to eat out without breaking the bank. Highly recommend.."

  • "No reason to trek into the city. This restaurant had it all. Great, inventive Italian food at an amazing price. There were so many options to chose from on the prix fixe menu, it will make you want to go back and try every dish. Highly recommended. Truly a neighborhood gem."
