  • "I've been to Scala's a few times over the years, usually for lunch. Dinner last week with a friend we hadn't seen for a few years was noisy, and we were unable to hear very well. The food was very good and the service as well. It was very difficult to see the menu in the darkened room. I would go back for lunch. The hostess was very efficient."

  • "Right in Downtown by Union Square, Scala's Bistro exceeded expectations for lunch in a tourist area. Attentive staff and inventive menu ( lunch of grilled chicken sandwich w/blue cheese, as well as thin crust asparagus pizza with lemon). In older building connected to Sir Francis Drake hotel. Bathroom was quite a walk to get to."

  • "Our family was visiting San Francisco for a few days and after a day of walking around the tourist sites we found Scala's to be a nice place to relax and recharge. The service was excellent, and the food was good. My wife had the half and half ravioli, I had the sausage pizza and Caesar salad with anchovies, one of my daughters had zuppa with chicken, and my other daughter had linguini with clams. You have to ask for bread. We didn't have any drinks except for coffee but the wine list looked good. Our total bill was about $110."

  • "We had a very busy day of touring so were looking for a place to eat close to our hotel. This was right across the street so the location was exactly what we were looking for. We had made a reservation so did not have to wait too long for a table; however, our table ended up being in the lounge. I had a strawberry basil lemonade cocktail to start, which was very good. They served sourdough with flavoupred olive oil to start. We shared the ravioli with - half with lemon cream sauce as well as marina. It was recommended by outer waiter and it didn't disappoint. We also ordered a marguerita pizza which was very I good as well. If you are looking for so e great Italian food this may be a place you want to add to your itinerary."

  • "Been coming here for years. Service was outstanding. Food was exceptionally good. I had the seafood chowder - it was so unusual and absolutely to die for! Dream of going back for it again. Very light broth - full of delicious seafood. Lots of fresh herbs. Just wonderful. Not that thick horrible stuff most people pawn off on you as chowder that is more like a stew. Friends ordered the burger and fries - both absolutely perfect. Husband ordered off the brunch menu and loved his Benedict - eggs cooked perfectly."

  • "We dined here because it was close to our theater and we wanted Italian food. The food was very good. Bath pastas were tasty and my caesar was excellent, especially when the white anchovies finally came on the second request. The presentation of the wine menu on an I-Pad is innovative, but they don't tell you the pass code until after it times out. I wonder what the added cost of an I-Pad per table is. The cost was found in the relatively high price of wines by the glass and the chintzy portions. I ordered the full pour twice and verified with the server. The first glass of white looked like 4 ounces at best and was less than some of our neighbors got. Later, the red wine served with dinner barely seemed to be a full pour."

  • "I ordered the price fixe menu and really only enjoyed the soup. The pork was tough and the artichokes that came with did not taste good. Also the nutella pizza was very disappointing. The crust was dry and overdone and the it really was not worth the price. Also it was very dark and noisy which did not make for easy conversation."

  • "The Fritto Misto appetizer was short on calamari, no shrimp and mostly fennel. The sausage pizza was greasy and crust was not memorable. I was expecting something with a thinner crust and if not, then at least a little more baked so it wouldn't be so doughy. My mouth was coated in grease and the topping was not a pleasant smell."

  • "We have enjoyed dinner here before and lunch was equally as delicious and satisfying. The Cobb salad - yum, with just the light vinagerette dressing for those who don't want blue cheese. The sausage pizza with red and yellow peppers generous and delicous! Service is exceptional and timely for those who want to make a matinee in San Francisco. We'll be back again!"

  • "We ate at Scala's bistro before going to the theater. Made reservations for 6:30 and were seated immediately upon our arrival. We were quickly greeted by our friendly and very knowledgable server. We shared a Caesar salad and I enjoyed linguini and clams and my husband had the pizza. Our meals arrived quickly but not so fast that we felt rushed. After a pleasant relaxing meal we were able to walk to the theater and enjoy the show. Will definitely visit Scala's again."

  • "The whole petrale sole was excellent, cooked perfectly and very tasty. The fried calamari was mostly vegetables ( this dish used to be so good we ordered it every time we go there), this time it is a disappointment, it was hard to find the few thin calamari rings . the octopus salad tasted very good on the first bite ( soft, cooked perfectly, not chewy ) but on subsequent bites, the dish was very salty ( and we do not usually shy away from salt) .My New York strip was ordered RARE, with an emphasis, and it came out medium to medium rare. You shouldn't have steaks on the menu if you cannot deliver. The overall ambience was very pleasant although it was quite noisy , the waiter did not rush us and was very knowledgeable. The food can improve"

  • "As usual, I enjoyed my lunch here with my clients. Nothing bad, nothing wrong, but nothing new for longtime. Can say "Stable"? - Yes, but not in positive way. I would say "bored", period. Menu need to updated, staff needs to be more vibrant, other than that, this long time "Gem" in Union Square going downhill quickly. Do I want bring my clients here?-need to think twice. Do I want bring my family here? I may not. Because there is tons of new restaurant popping up all over the place. Its time for updates !!!"

  • "We booked a reservation to have lunch before seeing a play at the Curran Theater. Arriving about 30 minutes late due to excessive traffic with the Giants in town (day of Timmy's no hitter), they sat us immediately and rushed our order to ensure our food would be done in time. All of our food was outstanding. We ate with time and made it to the play in plenty of time. Wonderful experience. Will definitely back where we can spend more time enjoying the ambiance."

  • "We were lucky enough to get the Wine Room for our party of 10. Eight were visitors to San Francisco and I wanted to show off the history of our city but also have great food. The service started off a little slow because another party of 16 came in at the same time. But once we got our food order in, they were great. The food was fabulous - everyone was very happy, comfortable and we were able to enjoy conversation. Plus the lobby of the Sir Francis Drake is stunning. I would bring out of towners there again for sure."

  • "My wife and I come to San Francisco quite often and when we do we find ourselves having lunch at Scala's most of the time. They have a wide variety of choices and they are all excellent. This last trip we had a cold avocado soup to start and then we shared a small pizza and a Caesars salad. They were all very good. The wait staff have been there for a long time which is another testament to Scala's consistency. The restaurant is located just a few steps from Union Square which puts you in the middle of all the shopping and theaters."

  • "On our way to a 2pm play at the Curran Theatre we stopped for lunch at Scala's Bistro. Service was amazing, we were immediately seated! My Hanger steak paninni sandwich was scrumptious w/ garlic chips that also were delicious! My friends had a hamburger with plenty of pommes frites! When you ask for medium rare you truly get it cooked exactly right! A delightful lunch!"

  • "My husband and I chose Scalas for a pre-theater dinner. The noise level was so bad that we could barely hear each other without shouting. I ordered a salad and the asparugus pizetta, and my husband had the halibut. His dinner was fine but my pizetta was tasteless and dry and the bottom of the crust was burned black. Since there wasn't time to reorder, I took a few bites but left most of it. When the waiter noticed that I hadn't eaten it he offered to comp us with a dessert. The service was fine but it is a busy, noisy place and those diners who want a quiet atmosphere should go elsewhere."

My husband always manage to point out something wrong with the restaurant...our table is too close to the door so he wants to change, the meat is too tough, fish is too dry, service is too slow. At the end of this meal, he said "this is just perfect, 100% wonderful". We are definitely going back."

  • "Dined here many times over the years and have experienced the restaurant's ups and downs. Food quality had really slipped since our last visit. We were served mixed greens salad with strawberries and I found spoiled lettuce in my salad. I had to pick it out and showed the server to inform the kitchen staff. They hardly seemed to care, attributing it to the "washing" process. I am an avid cook and know the difference between fresh lettuce greens and old spoiled greens that turn yellow and go slimy. Turkey sandwich had good flavor but we could barely find any turkey. And, their best classic dessert Bostini Cream Pie is only a mere shadow of its former creation. Poor interpretation, no longer "classic", not worth ordering."

We had the challenge of a well-lubricated party of 8-10 in the corner behind us with 2 people who had no idea how loud they were being. Food was delicious, we could hear each other talk, the waiter was excellent (although the busboy left something to be desired), the wine suggestion in our price range was perfect, and the overall price was reasonable. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant (a bit earlier than our 6:00 p.m. reservation), the staff was attentive and accommodating. Our waitress, Sarah, was the best! She was very kind and at ease with our group of 12. We were surprised when complimentary appetizers came to our table! The quality ingredients, along with the creative menu options, made for a very delicious meal. All of the food is prepared fresh, from scratch, and it shows. This restaurant cares very much about your total dining experience. I highly recommend bringing your loved ones here for a truly special time. Thank you, Scala's!"
