Always ExcellentEnjoyed another wonderful meal at the always deliciously reliable Scala's Bistro.
The spinach salad with warm vinaigrette was outstanding and we feasted on the steak frites which we shared and there was plenty of the perfectly crispy frites we hated to leave behind!
This is the perfect Union Square location and we had a window table and enjoyed the street action.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMwent after a show in the city.went after a show in the city. late night. great food great service and wonderful ambiance.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMScala's is a staple wheneverScala's is a staple whenever we visit SF. Right on Powell Street near Union Square with the action of the City, including cable cars, in full swing outside the entrance. We have always had a great experience. This particular visit was good, but not outstanding. Lentils were undercooked in one meal. Staff made a concerted effort to remedy this by preparing and bringing out another side dish of lentils. We love the ambiance and are always well taken care of at Scalas. We'll definitely go back.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMalways perfectevery time, Scala's delivers. So tough to do, but it's always fantastic. So tough to do time and time again, but its always perfect. I don't know how they do it. The flat breads, the house made pastas, the local, sustainable and organic produce, the dessert - the house made breads that nail it every time, the seasonal non alcaholic drinks, my favorite one on the face of the earth is Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate - all the textures and temperatures and chocolately flavors all on one little plate.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMTables give more privacy thanTables give more privacy than you would expect. Attentive and pleasant service. Duck was especially good.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Late Night DiningConvenient to San Francisco's Union Square area, we were looking for a late night dining experience...beyond a diner type. Scala was a great find for this....not very busy at 11:15 pm, but wonderful menu, gracious service, nice ambiance and a very pleasant experience. I would highly recommend it for after a night baseball game or the theater.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMTwice in one weekAte there twice in one week while at a conference with my wife. Food was consistently very good both times and the service very timely. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends visiting the city.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good. The food is consistently good as is their service. I hadn't been in a while and I couldn't believe the hostess remembered me! I always love the caesar salad with grilled salmon on top, and my friend loves the mussels - we're both creatures of habit. In the past I've tried various other pasta dishes and pizzas and everything is good.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat breakfastMet a colleague for breakfast here. Room was relatively quiet. Service was good. Food was really excellent, the Frisco Fried Egg Sandwich was beautifully prepared and tasted great. Price not bad for a business breakfast. Would repeat.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMLadies LunchAlthough we had a late lunch,2:00 pm,we were encouraged to order asap because the kitchen was closing at 3pm. Thank you5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMLively place! The food and service were great, but the noise level was almost unbearable. If you want to converse with your companions, this is not the place for you.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyable dinnerHigh ceilings and lots of people make this restaurant noisier than others. The good food more than makes up for that. The extra activity gives the restaurant a sense of excitement and vibrancy. We recommend the halibut and the flatiron steak dinners. Our waitstaff was excellent; helpful and attentive. She made us feel special in a crowd of diners. That takes talent!4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMBellisima, Scala's Bistro! This was our second visit to Scala's Bistro and it was even better than the first. The food and service are superb. It's not really a place for quiet, romantic dinner, but this is what dining in downtown San Francisco is all about. The room is crowded, noisy, and full of energy and the staff have perfected the choreography. Lots of people having a wonderful time.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful care!We were delighted with the wonderful food and service at La Scala's Bistro. We had a family gathering with a baby and we were thoughtfully seated in a great table a bit away from the mainstream of the dining room.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place for lunch or dinner!Great atmosphere! Pleasant dining experience. The hamburgers were a little dry, fries were great.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe charm and warm feelingThe charm and warm feeling we felt from the the staff resulted in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. This was enhanced by the old world architecture of the room. Our food was delicious and the wine (suggested by our waitress) was just right. We'll be going back to Scala's soon.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMLove this place been goingLove this place been going here 2 sometime 3 times a week. Good food and service4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMExceeded expectationsWhen I visit new cities, I usually like to try local, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and Scala's was a little more corporate (owned by Kimpton) for my taste. But a friend of mine recommended it, and I was pleasantly surprised. Our reservations were at 7:45 p.m., and we were seated right away. The server was professional and knowledgeable and made us feel like honored guests without bothering us too much. I had the salad with strawberries, the pizza Margherita, and the rhubarb tart for dessert. The dessert was amazing — perfectly tart with an sweet, biscuity crust topped with homemade strawberry whipped cream. Definitely worth the price of admission.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistantly great serviceConsistantly great service and great food. I have been going to Scala's Bistro since it opened. Clients always want to return on their next trip. I highly recommend this restaurant for business and pleasure.4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMThe only thing that marredThe only thing that marred this experience, a birthday breakfast for my mother, was the heavily scented patron in the next booth. Otherwise, quite a lovely experience.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMMy daughter and I had a delightfulMy daughter and I had a delightful experience at Scala's. The service was outstanding. Justin greeted us, we had a reservation and were seated right on time. Our waiter was Toku. He was very polite, made great wine recommendations and food suggestions. Our meal was wonderful ( linguini and clams for my mother, and I had my favorite margherita pizza with a salad)..delicious. Our timing was perfect with a 12 noon reservation to have a relaxing lunch. I brought my mother( who will be 81) in a week, to surprise her with Jersey Boy tickets.....she was surprised and raved about the lunch!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was a repeat visit toThis was a repeat visit to Scala's Bistro after about 10 years of not coming to SFO. Thank you!!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Spot for LunchOur group of 8 (with reservations) came in to have lunch prior to seeing a play. We were greeted and seated with just a momentary wait. Our waiter was very pleasant and did not rush us. We all ordered different items from the menu. Everyone was very pleased with their lunch. This was a nice beginning to a beautiful day in San Francisco.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMScala is very convenient ifScala is very convenient if you're down around Union Square. Be sure to make reservations or plan to eat in the bar. I had the most delicious papperdelle with roasted pork and veggies. The broth was to die for. We always manage one meal here during our SF trips.
BTW, the group dining experienbce upstairs is not that good. Had some rubber chicken there a few nights prior.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMMy husband and I were goingMy husband and I were going to the theatre after dinner and, not only did our waiter take the initiative by asking whether or not we were headed to the theatre, but he also kept track of our timing throughout the entire meal without our feeling rushed. This place is located right off of Union Square & has some of the best food & service & ambience around! When we're in the City shopping in the area, it's our go to place for a tasty lunch and when we've planned to go to the theatre (particularly the Curran or ACT because you can just walk there easily), it's our go-to spot for a delicious dinner. There's usually an energetic atmosphere, but you can come for almost any occasion - on a date, with the family, with a group or on your own & you will feel well-tended & special because the service is great & the food prepared & presented thoughtfully.3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was exelant but noiseFood was exelant but noise may be to much for some people.3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWanted to dine here beforeWanted to dine here before Chef Biesty left to open her own restaurant and it did not disappoint. Early dinner is the way to beat the crowds although service did feel just a tiny bit rushed to turn the table. The food was excellent, especially the pasta dishes "sauced" with luscious ingredients. My dining partner enjoyed a surprise decadent birthday dessert and we left pleasantly stuffed and happy. Best of luck to Chef Biesty in her new adventures and I hope Scala's can find a worthy replacement.3/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
