Diner Reviews
  • "The pasta with pork sugo was delicious! The pork was tender and the sauce was a perfect tomato sauce. Try their mussels! Lots of herbs and save your bread to dip in the sauce."

  • "The very best pasta dishes we have had in San Francisco. A popular venue, always packed and "energetic"! Not so suitable for large groups, as tables are best for 4."

  • "Had to go track down food, and water, however the recommended dish was great"

  • "I ate here for dinner with another couple and had a terrific time. Everyone loved their food and we found a great bottle of wine of which we had 2. Waiter was very attentive and nice. We will definitely be back!"

  • "As usual, it was fantastic. The tomato and watermelon salad was superb. The service was faultless. Thank you for making my mother's 80th birthday special. It is one of my favorite haunts when we go down to the city."

  • "Have not been to Scala's is years, will not be back. Service was OK once they waited on you, but we had to ask before they did wait upon us. Drinks took a long time to arrive, and when it did it was not right. Menu is limited and pricey. Had to ask for grated cheese, and drinks. Food was just OK. Overall, our lunch was not satisfying. With so many good restaurants in SF, how can Scala's survive?"

  • "This restaurant popped up when I was looking for a pre-theatre place to eat, but I don't expect to get my dinner 5 minutes after I order it. While my son's ravioli was adequate, the linguine with clam sauce was past bad. I think I've had rubber bands with less elasticity. It was also odd one had to ask for bread in an Italian restaurant. And for two entrees it cost over $50....unbelievable."

  • "The Octupus Salad and Linguini with clams were superb. Service is the best."
    Dined on 8/4/2014
  • "The service was exceptional, the dining room old SF quaint but was disappointed in the fried green tomatoes … tough and polenta hard otherwise it was a lovely experience."

  • "The pasta at Scala's is out of this world! Fresh and innovative. Something for everyone, even kids."
    Dined on 8/3/2014
  • "All of Scala's food looked fantastic but we had an excellent Caesar salad (and I am picky because I make great caesar) and a sausage pizza. The pizza came out with green peppers on it and there are only two foods on the planet I don't like and one is cooked green peppers (the other is canned peas fyi). Scala's immediately made me another pizza without question. It was really great - fresh mozzarella etc. The service was great too!"

  • "The combination of service, menu and ambiance are always such a perfect blend. The salmon is cooked perfectly and my companions enjoyed the hangar steak. Fresh salads and vegetables are standard. The HUGE difference-maker is the reception and trenmendous greeting on arrival. The restaurant is always busy and on a wait and, yet, the hostess brings a family-owned sense of friendship and concern for each arrivee. That greeting and recognition make Scala's one of my San Francisco favorites."

  • "We go each time we get to San Francisco and it never disappoints. The wait staff is friendly and professional and doesn't seam to have too many tables to be attentive. Food is always excellent. Will go back again. The hostess is awesome, she runs the place as if it were hers (maybe it is?) and is always accommodating in the midst of chaos!"

  • "We were greeted warmly by the hostess. The seating was comfortable. Loved the pork chop. Loved the Greek yogurt dessert. Great place for a conversation with a friend or friends."

  • "Scala's Bistro is a family dining restaurant. The pizzas are excellent, and the decor has an old world charm. The service tends to be slow at times, however the staff is friendly. Menu choices are great, wine list has some good labels."

  • "That time of year for Squash Blossom flat bread--one of the best creations I've ever tasted! Anda Zvingule is the server you want!"

  • "Great spot for a fun evening....very good food and active ambience! Dependable choice for entertaining....."

  • "Good things are foods such pizza and pastas, wines and service. As the restaurant is dark and noisy, it might be not suitable for family but for friends."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "Both the Halibut and Chicken dishes over cooked. Waiter rushed. Ambience nice but noisy. With so many restsurants in San Francisco, would choose elsewhere."

  • "Great location off union square. Pleasant, quiet ambience and good service for a weekday business lunch. Enjoyed the fritto misto and cobb salad. Did the job nicely."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "We had lunch, and our waiter was very helpful with recommendations. A little too helpful. He tended to monopolize our time, and made too many trips to our table to suggest food items we should consider. The food was fabulous as usual, and although I "complain", it is hard to find fault with such a friendly, foodie restaurant."

  • "Anytime I am visiting the Bay Area, I make sure I get one dinner in at Scala's Bistro--it is that good. I have taken many people there over the past 9 years, and everyone, no exceptions, has loved it as well. One of my top 5 restaurants, and one I will continue to return to."

  • "Went on a Friday and so glad we had reservations because it filled up quickly. Fast friendly service. Raviloi's and clam linguini were both excellent ! Only bummer was the bathroom facilities are very small and located up an elevator. Have had dinner at Scala's several times over the years and have never been disappointed."

  • "Had a flawless evening; we shared pizza as an appetizer; them ordered salads; then entrees; literally everything was outstanding. Had a great bottle of Duckhorn Merlot. I love this restaurant; my favorite Italian restaurant in San Francisco Bay Area."

  • "The food was very, very good. The servce was terrific. Everyone on the staff was friendly and accommodating from the moment we arrived. Although it was crowded, they did not rush us. Overall, this is an excellent restaurant that is located in the heart of Union Square."

  • "Excellent time at one of our favorite SF restaurants. This time we celebrated our son's birthday. We had a great time in a fabulous venue with excellent drink and food, and outstanding service. We like to keep coming back again and again."

  • "I hadn't been to Scala's in years and was delighted to find the food is still very good and service excellent. The location to Union Square is great for shopping and having a nice lunch or dinner."

  • "Too loud and not genuinely Italian, too bad it came highly recommended. Personnel is attentive but that's not enough."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "Looks are deceiving from the street as it looks tight and crowded, but inside it was quite spacious. We were seated in a booth. Food was excellent and service was great, attentive but not hovering. Price fixed option was a great value."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "My guest found the electronic wine list strange. We both found it strange that the prices of the wines would change daily."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "We've been to Scala Bistro many times for both lunch and dinner over the years, and was quite surprised with the lack of quality in the foods. Definitely not worth the prices they now charge for very mediocre food. Too bad as it's a very convenient location when going to the theatre."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "we have dined at Scala for years. salads and the grilled octopus are favorites. We were disappointed in limp salad with too much dressing. The octopus preparation was a step backwards as the sauce overpowered."
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "I've been to Scala's a few times over the years, usually for lunch. Dinner last week with a friend we hadn't seen for a few years was noisy, and we were unable to hear very well. The food was very good and the service as well. It was very difficult to see the menu in the darkened room. I would go back for lunch. The hostess was very efficient."

  • "Right in Downtown by Union Square, Scala's Bistro exceeded expectations for lunch in a tourist area. Attentive staff and inventive menu ( lunch of grilled chicken sandwich w/blue cheese, as well as thin crust asparagus pizza with lemon). In older building connected to Sir Francis Drake hotel. Bathroom was quite a walk to get to."

  • "Our family was visiting San Francisco for a few days and after a day of walking around the tourist sites we found Scala's to be a nice place to relax and recharge. The service was excellent, and the food was good. My wife had the half and half ravioli, I had the sausage pizza and Caesar salad with anchovies, one of my daughters had zuppa with chicken, and my other daughter had linguini with clams. You have to ask for bread. We didn't have any drinks except for coffee but the wine list looked good. Our total bill was about $110."

  • "We had a very busy day of touring so were looking for a place to eat close to our hotel. This was right across the street so the location was exactly what we were looking for. We had made a reservation so did not have to wait too long for a table; however, our table ended up being in the lounge. I had a strawberry basil lemonade cocktail to start, which was very good. They served sourdough with flavoupred olive oil to start. We shared the ravioli with - half with lemon cream sauce as well as marina. It was recommended by outer waiter and it didn't disappoint. We also ordered a marguerita pizza which was very I good as well. If you are looking for so e great Italian food this may be a place you want to add to your itinerary."
