A word from Scala's Bistro
Since 1995, Scala's Bistro has garnered a reputation for classic, elegant dining. Warm, earth tones, original murals, beaded bistro lamps, and rich, mahogany booths evoke a dramatic Old World café. Fresh, innovative, Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes enhance the Scala’s menu while continuing to pay homage to the old Scala’s favorites.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Food and service was fair. We were seated right next to a large LOUD group although there was other seating available."

  • "Locals suggested this restaurant, most say my NYC expectations were lost. Weak menu for an Italian restaurant, play to the locals move tourists in and out. Will not be on my return list"

  • "Was visiting from the UK and went to Scala for a special occasion. The venue, location and food did not disappoint."

  • "The food and service at lunch were great, but we had a group of 6 and even though we had a corner table it was hard to hear each other."

  • "Scala's is our go-to Union Square restaurant. It's great for meeting people who are in from out of town and staying around Union Square. The food is good, menu is diverse, and they have a solid wine list. It's fancy enough that we've taken clients there, but not so fancy that jeans are frowned upon. I've recently been put on a gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free diet and they were very willing and able to accommodate me with many options. They even offer freshly-made, gluten-free pasta so you don't have to miss out!"

  • "Our party of 3 dined at Scala's It is dark in the restaurant but less noticeable once it was dark outside. Our waitress was a disappointment . She left us 20 minutes with menus when we weren't instantly ready to order. She was not visible anywhere n the dining room during most of the meal"

  • "We've eaten at Scala's more for lunch than dinner and have really enjoyed the lunches. Our recent dinner was underwhelming, in terms of the food. The service was great and the atmosphere is always bustling and active. Love the location near Union Square."

  • "This is the second time I've been to Scala's and it didn't disappoint. The food is marvelous, the service was friendly and efficeint and the atmosphere was fun and lively, but still able to talk. There were five of us at our table and we made reservations well in advance as it was a Saturday night. They seated us within 2 minutes at a nice round table. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who is going to San Francisco / Union Square. We love it!"

  • "Scala's has been a regular pre-theater option for us. The food remains excellent, with larger than average serving sizes for a restaurant of this qualitiy. On this occasion it seemed like the kitchen was backed up: we had too long a wait between 1st and main courses. Dessert was included for 2 of us, but we had approximately 6 minutes to eat it, despite letting the waiter know several times that we were running out of time. I think it was more the kitchen than our waiter. Will have to think hard before returning pre--theater."

  • "Scala is a great staple for classic Italian in San Francisco that is centrally located in the Union Square area. The décor takes you back to old San Francisco. Start with the roasted artichokes. I was expecting to see a whole roasted artichoke, but was surprised to see all roasted hearts. They did all the work and they are delicious. Can't go wrong with any of the pasta dishes and definitely save room for dessert. You won't be disappointed with the 'Duo'."

  • "We've dined at Scala's many times and every meal has always been wonderful. Located in the Sir Francis Drake hotel, with a collection of booths and tables on two levels, with a bar interspersed as well. It's always noisy, so don't expect a quiet evening. On our latest visit, we had oysters, wonderful salads and pastas. The menu skews Italian; go with an appetite, because the portions are huge. Service is friendly and accommodating. The mussels are frites are special, but just about everything on the menu is wonderful. Wine list has some interesting choices and the bar produces a special lemon drop cocktail. A great establishment for the Union Square/theater district."

  • "We arrived a few minutes early (about 5:05 PM) and were told we would have to wait until the actual time of our reservation of 5:15PM. The fact was, they were still setting tables. Our waitress was delightful, however, we met her and then she disappeared for more than 10 minutes... After that she was fine... This seemed odd to me. Good food, $$$$."

  • "my second time here and first exp was fantastic so came back for dinner with friends i haven't seen in 10 years. so this was suppose to be a special occasion and none of them have been to Scala and came on my recommendation. i had the petrale sole which was soggy and wet with a lot of thin sauce that had no flavor . the side vegetables were like mush and tasted like boiled baby food. lemon sauce ravioli was delicious as usual panna cotte dessert was subpar. dried cranberries and peeled grapefruit over a think simple syrup sauce. . no thanks. can make it better at home. unfortunately will not return back again."

  • "Scala's bistro has good quality food close to Union Square and the theatre district. The wines by the glass are offered by half glass and full glass, which is nice. The bill does add up quickly -"

  • "I went to Scalea's with a group of friends for a bachelorette party. We had the friendliest server; I don't remember her name, but she had a Latvian accent. Lots of fun at dinner!!!"

  • "We've been to Scala's Bistro before but it's been a few years. Had memories of great food. Especially remember the Brioche Pear Bread Pudding from before. They didn't offer this item but did have a great pear dessert that I was too full to try ... we wanted to come back later for dessert but were too tired. San Francisco is a city of so many food choices and this is a really good one. House made noodles ... I had crab and English spring peas with mine .. yummy. My husband had clams. We had the Moules and Frites .. one of my favorites and it was perfect. Lots of mussels in a bright fresh broth. Cesaer as it should be. We will be back."

  • "Food was very good, creative and well presented. The wait staff was excellent!!!! Our server was very attentive and helpful! We had a couple of 'high-maintenance' people in our group and our server was patient, respectful, curtious and knowledgeable about both the wines and the menu. Only draw back, as late afternoon became evening, the noise level rose and it became difficult to converse with the person across the table."

  • "The food and staff at Scala's are excellent. My husband says it is the best Caesar salad and the attentiive service is very good. The lemon ravioli is a favorite.."

  • "The food was adequate but certainly not notable for the price. The restaurant is crowded and noisy. I would not recommend it."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "food was excellent, but prix fixe offerings are too limited and like most restaurants don't plan and having a conversation because the noise level will force you to shout."

  • "There were 5 of us and everything we ordered was great. The Caesar salad was especially good."
    Dined on 3/20/2014
  • "Poor lighting made it impossible to read the menu without a flashlight. Food was good, but the noise level became too loud to have a conversation across the table."

  • "Salad w apples was great Crab on crostini-bread was hard to chew through; typical great SF sour dough Brocolini dish was very bitter, don't know why"

  • "Our first experience at Scala's and we have to say that the food was incredible! Authentic cuisine with flavors bursting in your mouth - soooo good! Only downfall is that the restaurant itself is rather noisy and it is very difficult to hear your own conversion. Don't go here if you are trying to meet up with friends you haven't seen in a while - you wont be able to hear much. Do go here if you want excellent food and the conversation isn't important :)"

  • "I really enjoyed lunch here. My fresh mozarella panini was very flavorful, with good quality traditional ingredients and fresh touch of quinoa salad on the side. It was nice to be in a spacious, comfortable and quiet dining room for a change instead of modern, industrial chic with the too-small tables and high noise level of some of the trendy-trendy newer places. I appreciated the cheerful, professional, efficient service by a waiter who we suspected had been there for a long time. It's too good to leave to just the tourists who frequent Union Square; I'd recommend to locals as well."

  • "It was a busy night, but with open table we got a reservation earlier than we expected and were seated almost right away when we arrived. The atmosphere was energetic, the service was very friendly, and the food was excellent."

  • "Came here on a recommendation from a friend. We were very pleased with the experience. The staff was excellent, and service was wonderful. Many choices of wines, our waiter assisted me with selecting a red. We started with the Fritto Misto (Calamari, bell peppers, fennel, sweet potatoes lightly battered with aioli dip)-very good. The coastal greens salad was fresh and the dressing was delicious. I'd highly recommend the Orecchiette (delicious) and the Roasted Baby Carrots (best carrots I've had). We had the Risotto Del Giorno, a little rich in flavor for me-yet still delicious. For dessert we had the Bostini Cream "Pie" - every bite melts in your mouth-delicious. I would highly recommend Scala's Bistro and making reservations."

  • "Great food. Very loud, but so be it. Didn't have wine, but I know it does have good wine. It was lunch time, so no wine. Definitely a repeat."

  • "We had a nice Sunday birthday breakfast at Scala's on March 9. Food was cooked to order, service was great, it was not too crowded, which was nice. They told us it was a bit slow for a Sunday, but that was OK, it made for a more enjoyable time. The Applewood smoked bacon with poached eggs was right on the money. Nice Union Sq dining experience."

  • "Scala's is consistently wonderful....fresh, accessible, non gimmicky food in an elegant atmosphere. Great service."

  • "Good breakfast selection. Service was slow; had to track down waiter for bill."

  • "The hostess accommodated our late arrival (police action on BART) very nicely, with no attitude. (We had warned her however.) The waiter was nice and knowledgeable about their food and wine list. While nothing unusual, the food was classic Italian and well-prepared. It is a good deal for that area of the City, especially in light of the nice, warm atmosphere. I would definitely go back if in the mood for Italian and in the Union Square area."

  • "Thursday night (early (6) 2go to theatre). At first not crowded; by the time we left, full. Scala is a very good choice 4 Union Square. Not overly expensive; dependable Italian food; decent, not extensive but quite sufficient, wine list. All wines that r by the glass r also offered in half-glasses if you're inclined 2try multiple wines. A real plus in my estimation. Service by our waiter was fine but the delay by the kitchen (and remember we arrived way before anyone else) was unexpected ¬ acceptable. I'd say the time between being served an appetizer 2main course was 40 mins &thus perhaps 50 minutes after ordering. That sort of thing drives me crazy and has nothing to do with "elegant" dining if that's what the mgmt. thinks it is doing."
