I love the fact that the salad you
get with the entree for lunch is a real salad and delicious, as were the fries. My entire party of 6 enjoyed their lunch"

The restaurant is very trendy.
Great food and service, but the noise level when it is full is terrible. We could not hear each other's conversation and we were directly across from each other."

Menu was interesting and varied,
even for a busy night like this one. Room was bright, but classy. Entres were small in size, but really good, so I was happy with that. We had chocolate fondue for two, That was a very romantic touch!"

To try someplace new off-season in
Cape May, we drove 12 miles to Sax, worth every mile of the drive! Located in a small hotel, Sax has a separate bar area with its own menu. (The dining room menu is also available here.) The decor in the bar is sophisticated and upscale, but not stuffy. There is also a deck overlooking the bay for casual summer dining. The sophisticated ambience continues in the dining room, with gentle lighting, dark brown walls, and a romantic fireplace. The menu had an adequate range of offerings. My husband loved his Lobster Mac and Cheese , and my 8 oz Beef Tenderloin was perfect.Portions were sensibly sized.I should say that the service was excellent as well: friendly and attentive but not intrusive. We'll return!"

We went to Sax on a cold wet
December night but they had a fire burning in the fire place which helped to keep away the dampness. Even with this being the off season there was a good number of people that came in for dinner around the same time. The servers had to be really on their toes to keep up. There was 1 waitress and a maître d working and the hotel bartender that came in to help. At times service did seem thin but they were extremely nice. As for the meals we ordered filets and they were cooked and seasoned wonderfully. They came with a very small portion of garlic mashed potatoes which could have been more. We also had dessert and it was very good too. Overall it was a nice meal and I would go back again."

Very attentive service. Wide
variety of food selections on buffet."

October 12, 2013 was a cold,
rainy, windy nor’easter night. My party arrived a few minutes before 7 and were immediately seated by the fireplace which took the chill off on such an evening. The service was professional and without a hitch--everyone knew their role. I thought the wine list was impressive both in scope and value. It took very little effort to find a winner--a Marlborough Sauv Blanc. The best dishes of the night were the crab cake appetizer, uniquely paired w/pickled onions and a tzatziki sauce, the veal chop special, cooked to pink perfection and served with grilled seasonal vegetables, and the apple strudel dessert. I thought the overall experience was outstanding at that price point and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend."

Shame the service ruins your night
. took 55 mins just to get bread and its the OFF Season ! Wonder how they make it during the height of the season?. No staff teamwork and they were clearly over their head . Should have listened to my friend who dined there weeks ago. They had same experience I hope they take the feedback and turn things around !"

We went because we are local to
Avalon. The restaurant,Sax, is in a hotel so the diners are sometimes family groups. The restaurant is right next to the wedding room, so you hear the blaring dj and the bass vibration the entire time. This noise is on top of the already very loud dining room. The decor is nice but not at all intimate. The wine list was not properly assorted nor edited to be inclusive of basic French Chardonnay nor a mid range Champagne. The list is low end and then high end; no middle. The food was the biggest disappointment of all. The basic caesar salad had tomotoes and was plated in a bowl. We did not enjoy our entrees of meatloaf and grouper. Grouper was in broth; overdone and over spiced. The meatloaf was not interesting."

We would go back for sure. Food
was excellent, service was superior and the setting was just what we wanted. Our server, Teresa, was very personable yet professional. Another server (Mark, a friend & Avalon neighbor) recommended the soup and the double-cut pork chop... both were incredible."

Both the inside and outside
locations are very good. Great sunsets. Food was excellent"

Pleasantly surprised. Expected an
overpriced, seasonal "place to go", and actually experienced a fairly priced dinner of decent quality. No soup, salad, or vegetables and not the freshest rolls, but drink prices were reasonable. Service was fine, and the decor refreshing. Not bad for a resort town establishment. I will recommend and return again."

Sax tries to be an elegant hip
restaurant but misses the mark. It is very overpriced. $5 for a cup of coffee and no one offered a refill. The waitress might have been good but she seemed to have been waiting on tables all over the restaurant. It was difficult to get her attention because she never seemed to be near our table. The person pouring the water did not pay attention so water glasses went empty. The decor was okay but it had the feeling of a hotel coffee shop. The food was passable but the chicken I had was swimming in sauce. Free valet parking was a plus."

One of the truly best restaurants
in the Avalon/Stone Harbor area. The cuisine is equal to what you would find in Atlantic City or Philadelphia. The service is really outstanding as well. They're friendly, knowledgeable, and best of all, have a great understanding of server manners."

First time here and will return.
The food was excellent. All four of us had a different menu item and we all agreed. Service was great and the place is very upscale."
Dined on 8/12/2013
The prices were on the high side
($38 entree $15 apps) but at the shore everywhere is a little high. The guys ordered the Ribeye 12 oz steaks and were very disappoionted as the steaks were only a 1/4 inch thick and the potatoes were cold. The bus staff needs more training how and when to bus a table. It was like they were hustling us out. Also, we tried to book a table for six on line and was told it would be 8 weeks, yet when we were there it was 1/2 empty! Maybe when they are opened for a bit longer they can work out the kinks, train the busers and get the reservations straight. If they are charging $38 for a steak, they need to get the real thing!"

The Reeds was a great experience!
The outside deck offers an outstanding view, along with great martinis, and the inside dining area was relaxing. The service and food were both really great, as well as the wine selection. We had a wonderful evening at the Reeds!"

Superb food by Chef Utley.
Extremely disappointing service from our waitress starting with pouring of Prosecco, not chilled and she had no clue how to pour, to rarely returning and never in sight. More expensive than most restaurants in this area. Service does not match their prices nor Chef's creations....we tried pork, grouper, salmon and crab and loved it all. Will return when glitches fixed. It is new and has a great future if they get a handle on service. Reservation needed. Bay view mesmerizing at sunset .....will try Water Grille and their brunch and breakfast. Please train your staff! Congrats Chef Utley!"

Beautiful Restaurant with
excellant food. Sax Restaurant was extremely loud and hard to have a conversation."
Dined on 7/28/2013
The roasted cauliflower soup was
delicious. Definitely ask your waiter for suggestions. Our waiter informed us the Cesar salad was different a bit more like a thousand island dressing"
Dined on 7/26/2013
We didnt realize until we got
there that the reservation was for inside. I was a little bummed at first we werent sitting on the deck but that is considered a different restaurant. However, the food and service turned out to be incredible! Would definitely go again and woild definitely recommend!"
Dined on 7/23/2013
Beautiful setting - indoors and
out. The menu sounds better than it tastes - dishes could have used more seasoning - everything was on the bland side, except the udon noodles which were too salty. Service was great. Drinks are overpriced - especially wines by the glass. Maybe they still need time to work out the kinks."
Dined on 7/21/2013
I was seated very quickly but it
took about 15 minutes for a server to even ask if we wanted some water. Drink orders were messed up. Food and setting is definitely a step above other offerings in the area. This is the type of restaurant SH needed however the level of service just does not live up to the ambitions of this restaurant. Maybe its just growing pains."

Dinner for Four, wait staff was
wonderful. Couldn't be more accomodating! Appetizers to Entre's were delicious. Nice wine list. Sat by the open windows overlooking third ave. service to presentation was exceptional."
Dined on 7/12/2013
The restaurant looks great and has
large windows that open to create a sense of outdoor eating. Although the service was attentive and helpful, the food was unfortunately, not up to the level advertised. The chicken was overcooked and the shrimp cocktail consisted of four of the smallest shrimp I ever saw. The real problem with this restaurant is the noise. The noise level was so high we were unable to communicate without shouting. We were all set to love it (looking for a new great place at the shore) but were sorely disappointed."
Dined on 7/14/2013
Service was very good, but food
was very average. Expensive for the quality. The inside restaurant takes reservations and the atmosphere is nice. Hopefully it will improve because there are few great fine dining restaurants on the island. It is not a byob so your bill adds up quickly."
Dined on 7/7/2013
Menu was not diverse enough.
Wanted a green salad as starter. Waiter said they did not have. They did have what a arugula and tomato salad the table next to us had... Salmon dry; short ribs pasta was fair 2 week open but growing pains evident. Not going back. Disappointing. Add tablecloths to Sax to spruce up."

Great food with very attentive
service in an elegant dining room."
Dined on 6/30/2013
The food and service was good but
on a Saturday night they ran out of a few bottles of white wine. Unacceptable when there is a liquor store right down the street."
Dined on 6/30/2013
The three of us got there early
because 5:30 was the only available time listed on Open Table. We dined in the Sax restaurant, as opposed to the indoor/outdoor Water Star Grille because again, that is where Open Table reserved us. Ask for Carole - wonderfully experienced, friendly server. Menu and atmostphere were upscale. Must try! A few bullets to save space: 1) Go with the iced tap water - tasted just fine 2) Skip the roasted tomato app (small and bacon only avg.) 3) shrimp and poached egg app was good 4) parmesan dinner rolls were excellent 5) manicotti with braised short ribs and blue crab outstanding, grouper (perfect). 6) desserts - shared the goat cheese cheesecake and the chef's special brownie sundae (both yummy)."

Went to Sax Sunday evening 6/23
first weekend they were open to public I think. Started out bad when we asked for Sauvignon blanc and were told they had none. Ordered Pinot Grigio and about ten minutes later waitress came back and said only white wine they had was Riesling. Hmm.... Salads were delivered before any rolls or bread, so we eventually had to ask for bread even though tables around us all had bread. When ordering main course, we had some questions about the menu. Young waitress was clueless, just tried to read description from our menu. could not answer any questions. No issues with main course once it was served. Ambiance of the place is nice. Hopefully just a few first weekend glitches that will improve with time."
Dined on 6/24/2013
The service from the kitchen was
extremely slow - took one hour to get our first course. And then another half hour for the main course, And then one member of our party's dish was not as expected - the short ribs were enveloped in a large manicotti that contained little meat. It s taken away and then returned a half hour latter. By then our half eaten food was cold. The staff did not clarify that this was how it was prepared. When we summoned the manager, he offered to give us free desserts. By then we had sat there for over two hours and our backs hurt. We thought they should have taken the mislabeled entre off of our bill, like other high end restaurants to."

Great future potential, lots of
growing pains now though..."
