Diner Reviews
  • "Sax is a great place to go to soak up some great neighborhood fun. The red velvet curtains, gold accents and hanging chandeliers add to this fun. We were there for a bachelorette party and we had a fantastic time. Things to be aware of: drinks are anywhere from 14-18 a piece so bring lots of money. And, after two hour of being in the lounge, they made us feel like we had to leave. The waitress brought the check over like we were only allowed to be there for a couple hours, which in the end it hurt the business because we would have stayed probably way too long :)"

  • "Found SAX online as I wanted something other than my usual choosing of restaurants. A bit crazy, a lot of sexy, & cool (as in different). LOVE the ambiance & decor. I would describe it as old Renaissance & something out of a Dracula movie. There is a burlesque show every ~15 min or so and the entertainment is 'interesting' but diverse. Food was OK, but expected this from reviews.. The duck was chewy & almost inedible. The slow-cooked braised ribs were actually good. Dessert was terrible. Despite the raves on their cocktails, I am not a cocktail drinker thus cannot comment on that. Overall, if you want a fun place to go that is an alternative to a sit-down dinner, even (& probably better) with friends, this is it."

  • "The hostess was very rude. Even with a confirmed reservation, we still had to wait 30min. When we asked about a table that was ready, we were told to keep waiting. I asked to speak to a manager, a hostess was sent over perpetrating to be a manager and was even more rude. She refused to give the owner's name and said the hostess' job was not to make guests happy but to follow her orders in seating. The show was a joke. The performances were weakly choreographed. The dancers stood about 4 ft tall and a hefty 200+. NOT what I want to see swinging around on a pole. Another was a guy juggling. The Cirque performers were either interns or rejects that didn't make the cut. Overall: DC's ratchetest's epic fail of an attempt to demostrate class."

  • "Probably one of the best birthdays I've had. Great show, Great food, and the staff is friendly, and goes out of their way to make your birthday feel special."

  • "The show was very good something different for DC restaurants. However this is still a restaurant and the food should have been the star of the show. The food at best was average however the price was expensive another reason why I expected the food to compliment the excellent décor. The food were plated very well however the taste which was very bland did not match the presentation. Out of a table of four the only person happy with their selection was the person who ordered Grilled Rib eye steak. The rest of our table had Artichoke Ravioli, Seared Scallops, and Chilean Sea Bass and we all were not happy with our selection."

  • "My girlfriend and I went here at 7pm for our anniversary dinner and it was everything we wanted. The interior must have been deigned by an attractive gay Italian vampire. The service was attentive and timely. The performers were sexy but mostly impressively athletic, leaving us wondering if they work here on their nights off from circ du solei. The food was far better than most of the reviews led me to expect. The whole package was expensive, but a memorable experience and therefore good value for the money. Finally, the people watching was spot on."

  • "So much fun if you're looking for a romantic night out. Food is really delicious, drinks are strong and really yummy, the dessert was the only thing that was lacking. My only complaint is it was so loud that it was impossible to hold a conversation. Luckily the shows that happen ever 10 minutes are superb and made the evening still very enjoyable."

  • "The food, service and entertainment was excellent!"

  • "Came to SAX for a bachelorette brunch - it was exactly what we wanted! Fun dancing, a little sexy, but nothing over-the-top. Dancers were great - we were impressed by the skill and coreography. I had read reviews that the food was mediocre for the price, but we all felt the food was fantastic. With bottomless drinks and multiple courses, it came in for what a good brunch would cost anywhere else. The portion sizes are akin to a more up-scale restaurant (on the small-to-medium size - don't come here for the food if you demand large portions), but between the mimosas and the food, I was stuffed. Service was excellent - they managed to always keep our table clear and our drinks full, without being intrusive (a hard task!). Overall, A+!"

  • "The service was great minus having to wait 30 minutes for our table although we had a reservation. The food was nothing to rave about. Strawberry gazpacho was extremely tart, artichoke ravioli was not fresh and the fried artichoke garnish tasted old and was served cold. The food was not worth the cost. The show was fun however, if you go late in the evening you will not be able to hear the people you're with."

  • "This place is top notch and is worth every penny. Valet was fast AND CHEAP! $12. No line at 9:30pm. Reservations were correct. We were asked to wait a few mins for our table, but were treated to shots by the hostess while waiting at the bar. Regal ambiance! Beautiful soft comfy seating. Our waitress was like a best friend -awesome personality, very attentive. Cocktails/shots were to DIE for! Food was absolutely exquisite. We tasted each others food and EVERYTHING was delicious. I had Brie en Croute, Monfish, J'et'amie Cocktail. Perfect serving size, we were full! We originally thought we would go to a club after, but ended up staying and partying all night - the music was great and the shows were awesome!"

  • "The best Restaurant Week dinner deal ever with a show!! Also, first time a restaurant participant did not have SALMON on the restaurant week menu!! They actually have two options for fish dinner meal. Server was really nice and on point."

  • "Then this is the place for you. You can make a reservation and it doesn't actually mean you will be seated at that time. The drinks are high (3 sidecars cost $66) and while the food is ok, for the price charged i expect more."

  • "Sax is a one of its kind place for DC. The beautiful interiors, great food and service coupled with the mind blowing burlesque performances make it worth a visit! Thumbs up!"

  • "SAX's main draw is the live entertainment that they feature frequently throughout the night. The food itself is only decent, but they have some delicious house cocktails that are worth trying (though they are a bit overpriced). The decor and ambiance is quite unique; the proactively dressed servers still maintain a certain elegance and the low lighting keeps things fairly intimate despite the energetic atmosphere. If you are looking for a quiet and peaceful location this is not the place, but if you're looking for something out of the ordinary that's also somewhat alluring then SAX is worth a look."

  • "This Burlesque restaurant was a beautiful surprise. Every 15 minutes a show would start- lively dancers and acrobatics. Wonderful entertainment. My favorite drink was Scandalous. The food was delicious, many options to chose from. I will definitely be coming back!"

  • "The service was excellent and the show was amazing. When I paid the bill, I wrote $0.00 for the tip given I would be providing the waitress with a cash tip. We sat for another 5 mins and then we left. I accidentally forgot to leave the cash tip with the bill. The waitress then chased us out the door because she didn't receive a tip. I gave her the cash that I intended to leave. I thought it was unprofessional to chase someone down for a tip when the bill was already paid. A tip is discretional right?!?"

  • "We dined here during DC restaurant week as I always wanted to try based on the photos I saw online. It seems to be a pretty private place but definitely not as big as you could imagine. It was conveniently located just a few blocks away from Metro Center metro station. When you walk inside, you will automatically have the feeling of nightclub, but the elegant kind. The main color is black and red, closer to the meaning of the name. You were given one mask as complimentary, I noticed only few people actually wear it during dinner. The light is definitely dim and dark, which creates romantic atmosphere for couples and private group dinning experience. The food was okay, but not extraordinary. The performance does has art element in it."

  • "We arrived for an early dinner for our anniversary. We were promptly seated and brought two glasses of champagne on the house. How nice! The food came out rapidly one course after another, and it made us feel a bit rushed. But the food was excellent -- high quality ingredients & delicious. The server was friendly and helpful. The stage behind glass is a cool concept, and every 15 minutes there was a short show which we enjoyed over our meal. The dancers were quite skilled, some of them leaving us in awe. At the end they brought us a small cake on the house, which again was so nice and very much appreciated! I just wish they had taken a bit more time between courses to allow us to fully enjoy our otherwise great anniversary evening."

  • "The food was quite good - although everything was sufficiently overpriced that I appreciated being able to join in during restaurant week. The service was absolutely wonderful - everyone was lovely. The "entertainment" was over the top silly. I was not impressed with the entertainment and went away feeling sorry for the gals behind the glass in the Thursday even Vaudeville routine. But, for a carefree night of silly frivolity, perhaps its just what you're looking for. For me, not so much."

  • "I wanted to kickoff monthly girl's night, and I couldn't have made a better selection than Sax during restaurant week. It was fabulous! From the grandiose velvet and gold main entrance to the sheer opulence of the main seating floor this is definitely not your average night out. The acrobats, live painters, and violinist only come second too because the food and drinks stole the show. Add the great and attentive service and you have a night you"ll be sharing with friends for ages. I will definitely go back even with knowing how much more expensive it will be since it wont be restaurant week, but at Sax you're paying for an experience and its worth it."

  • "This restaurant provided entertainment during dinner, including acrobatic performers and on hoops and fabric strips. This was moderately interesting, but each performer preformed for just a few minutes. There was also a man who played a string instrument resembling a guitar without a frame--an open "S" thing. That was OK. But most of the time, the only "entertainment" was a man creating a large painting on the stage. During that time, I pulled out my iPAD since I was dining alone. The food was just OK. Short ribs & potatoes, mostly bland. Not really interesting. One reason that I tried it is that is so expensive. Minimum on weekend nights is $75, as I recall. Maybe the food & entertainment are better then."

  • "We loved the decor and the coziness of the dimly lit dining area. The artist, musician and dancers were fantastic and made the mood even more "saxy"... we'll definitely be going back!"

  • "Waitstaff, drinks, ambiance, entertainment, and DJ were great; hostess - not so much! Despite that obvious attitude of the hostess (reason unknown), we had a fabulous time. Went for brunch...felt like we were transcended to another place and time. We didn't even realize it was still the afternoon when we left. Making plans to come again...soon!"

  • "this was my second time visiting saxdc. First experience was great, second was terrible. I had to work late so I called in advance to reschedule my appointment. When I arrived, I was told it's a packed night and had to wait. I was also told, if I had made it to my original appointment then I would have been seated. One of the front desk attendee with blond type hair was very rude, unprofessional and not customer service friendly at all."

  • "The fees charged for the weekend are ridiculous. We understood the $75.00 minimum on Friday, but was surprised by the additional 20% fee and automatic gratuity. If you choose to go to this lounge, be prepared to spend. The drinks were delicious and the food was decent, however I suspect the fish I had was not fresh and one of our desserts was freezer burned. Our server did offer a different dessert, in fact our server was excellent. All in all, it was definitely a different experience to see aerial performers and burlesque routines while dining. The venue and seating is very plush and comfy and the service staff is excellent."

  • "I went here on a Friday night for my best friend's birthday dinner. Our server was awesome, food was amazing, and the dancers were crazy talented. Super entertaining. We had the best time and it was worth the cost. I would definitely recommend this place for a special night out. It's a unique concept (especially in DC), It reminded of a place I would find in NYC."

  • "Food was good but overpriced. The best thing we ordered was the fondue appetizer. Dessert was horrible, the SAX Opera Cake was dry. The acrobatics entertainment was the only part of the entertainment worth going for and it was very short. The other dancers were poorly trained and distasteful."

  • "We went to Sax for our 5th wedding anniversary and I was excited as soon as we walked in the door! Our server was great. She was very sweet and helpful with the menu. The burlesque dancers were amazing! I've been to a few shows like them before but this blew the others out of the water. The dancers were all on point and simply mesmerizing. The food was fantastic, a culinary delight. We will definitely come back and suggest Sax to our friends!"

  • "it was my daughter's 34th birthday! 2 days before she went to a movie and dinner, the day before she went to a show but she said SAX restaurant was the highlight of her birthday weekend. She really enjoyed everything about the SAX restaurant. We took so many pictures for her to always remember that day. Also the service was amazingly attentive. Thank you!"
