A word from Sava's
Sava"s Restaurant, originally Sava's State Street Cafe, opened June of '07 at a small location across from our current space. We started small, every year adding, changing, and working with our customers to achieve an atmosphere and menu that we were proud of. The quaint cafe was merely a jumping off point for the elaborate expansion that later followed. In August of '09 we opened Sava's Restaurant in the beautiful location we're in today, making a name for ourselves based on great service, a young, welcoming atmosphere, & delicious dishes.
We cater to a wide range of clientele, including students, professors, townies, out-of-towners – we open our doors to everyone. From our eclectic menu our best dishes are homemade, with quality ingredients from local vendors. We like Michigan beef, produce, and beer! Join us and experience Sava's for yourself!

Diner Reviews
  • "Great place to eat, love the atmosphere and the drinks. I recommend this place to anyone."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our recent dinner at Sava's! It was off to a good start when we walked in and they had our table all ready for us -- the beauty of Open Table! The food was definitely the highlight, though my husband enjoyed the craft beer and my son liked the strawberry lemonade. We started with the Mediterranean trio appetizer - mmmmm. The hummus was some of the best ever. From the lamb burger to the butternut squash ravioli to the seafood pasta, all the entrees were amazing. We'll definitely add Sava's to our list of favorite restaurants in A2."

  • "There are not many places in the UM campus area where you can get gourmet food - this is one. Have had most things on the menu and they have varied from very good to excellent (mostly the latter). They also have decent wine list - limited but quality at fair prices. Only quibble - when place is full noise level makes it almost impossible to carry on any meaningful conversation - hence not a good place for a romantic evening."

  • "I've been here several times for Sunday brunch and it's always amazing. The food choice and quality is fantastic. When I've had guests with me - they are always blown away by the brunch. And if brunch isn't your thing - the menu is also varied and excellent. They have a great deal on Bloody Mary's and Mimosa with the Brunch. They also have a great selection of local craft beer if you like that (I do). Highly recommended!"

  • "We had a super meal with excellent service, but the noise level was MORE than ''energetic!" Thank goodness we were in a booth or I don't think we could've had a decent conversation."

  • "The waitress was tardy. Biscuits and gravy only gets you one rock hard dry biscuit. A little over priced."

  • "We had reservations for 5:30, but due to various factors (including horrible traffic!) we didn't make it to the restaurant until after 6:00pm. We called a couple times to notify them of our delay, and once we arrived they seated us within a couple minutes, no problem! I was very grateful for that, since we were celebrating my 8-months pregnant best friend... Service was wonderful. We had someone with us who had a number of dietary restrictions, and our waitress was wonderfully accommodating -- she even had to run back to the kitchen three times to provide answers to my friend's questions. The food was delicious! No complaints, and they got my friend's more complicated food order just right! I would highly recommend Sava's to anyone!"

  • "Have been going to Sava's for years and the experience on Saturday night was totally disappointing. The noise level was terrible and the music couldn't be heard except for the constant pounding of the base. There were six of us and we had a hard time conversing. As for the food, there were three of the six of us that were disappointed. I had the seared scallops - they were tasty but small compared to the huge pile of risotto and there were maybe six pieces of spinach. Two members of the party had the steak - both steaks were overcooked. One positive for the dinner...our server was excellent! Sad to say but we won't be going back for some time to come."

  • "Busy on a Monday night - had to wait 20 min despite reservation. However staff was apologetic and friendly. Nice range of items on the menu at different price points. Every meal at our table was good."

  • "Very nice dinner with my college daughter and her friends. Lots of vegetarian entrees and all the food was delicious. The service was good and we enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. We will definitely return and look forward to eating outside!"

  • "The restaurant is in a great location and it is an attractive location. Parking was at a premium the day we went because of a downtown event. Our waiter was excellent. Even though the restaurant has a gluten free menu (one of us has to go gluten free) for dinner, they do not have one for brunch or lunch. The waiter was helpful in this regard. I had the fish tacos which were disappointing. The fish was supposed to be a blackened talapia topped with a slaw and chipolte dressing. The fish was not blackened and was tasteless and instead of slaw the topping was lettuce. The dressing was very skimpy - this would have been the only flavor."

  • "We have dined at Sava's many times and have never been disappointed. We have enjoyed lunch, dinner and now brunch. The food is wonderful and not too expensive. Reservations are definitely recommended and thankfully they take them. You can also drop in but better to arrive at an off time rather than have to wait. I love this place!"

  • "The food is really good, not that expensive, and the portions are large. We ordered way too much. The wait staff is friendly. We had a show and I had some difficulty flagging down my wait person, but he seemed new. Not a big deal. He was a nice kid and a good waiter, in general. Overall, it was a great experience. Mixed drinks are an art here and they are open until midnight - which is a rarity in this town."

  • "As you would expect Sava's was a bit on the expensive side but on special occasions this is a great place to be. The service started off a little slow but after a few minutes of waiting we already had appetizers and never an empty glass on our table! The food was fantastic and I would definitely recommend this restaurant to any couples or groups looking for a nice place for dinner."

  • "I will go back to the restaurant but I felt the quality of the food was hit or miss. We had a great appetizer and I had an average salad. The atmosphere is great and the restaurant is huge. The best part of the restaurant was its moderate pricing for kind of an upscale interior."

  • "I had heard so much about Sava's and wanted to celebrate my birthday here with my friends. Busy weekend, so service was really slow, not holding it against them. We all ordered something different to try the menu out, and the food was really good, but I couldn't get past how salty my dish was...chicken saltimbocca, which was garnished with prosciutto that was also very salty in nature. The chicken fusilli, mac n cheese, fish n chips were fine and the special osso buco was yummy. The sausage risotto dish was overcooked IMHO. My friend didn't even eat the risotto. My other friend ordered a birthday dessert for me that never came, and we didn't want to wait any longer, since we had to be elsewhere. I would come back to try it again."

  • "As usual, the dining experience at Sava's was wonderful. It is my daughter's favorite place to eat in Ann Arbor and that is saying a lot! The food was delicious, especially the Cuban sandwich and the spinach-brie omelette. For the birthday girl a serving of chocolate-mocha mousse which was an unexpected treat! The noise level was absurdly high on Saturday-I do not care for techno music and that was what was playing. Otherwise it was a great lunch and I can't wait to return!"

  • "Sava's has lots of good pasta dishes, interesting appetizers including fried polenta etc. Wine list has a number of decent wines at fair prices. Service is efficient without being overbearing. Main dishes are bountiful and specials are worth considering. Place gets pretty crowded on weekends and can be quite loud so not a place for a quiet romantic dinner, but other than that it is currently the best place for a very good dinner before a show on campus."

  • "My wife and I have dined her numerous times since we moved to Ann Arbor 2 years ago. It is our first choice of restaurant for out of towners and it never disappoints. The staff is very knowledgeable of the food and the exotic drink list. The drink list is a custom mash up of drinks the bartenders make-up themselves. Always fun to find something new on the list that sounds intriguing to try. I always describe the food as comfortable.... but different enough to make you feel adventurous. Like you are trying something new and different that you can't get anywhere else."

  • "I went here with my family on Friday night. I have only been to Sava's for brunch before which was great. Dinner not so much. Every thing was mediocre, not horrible but not great. It was very noisy inside and I found myself almost having to yell to communicate. The food was okay. I had heard good things about the risotto balls and the sweet potato fries. The risotto balls were cheezy. That's the best way to describe them. They were not flavorful and I didn't want to finish them. The fries were kind of soggy. The best dish of the night was the chicken fusilli. Although this was still not great. The dish looked like it had been sitting out under a hot light for half an hour. While I enjoy their brunch, I would hesitate going for dinner."

  • "The bar has a lot of excellent craft beers at reasonable prices and the food menu is varied -- something for everyone's taste. The The service was flawless and enhanced the dining experience. This was my first time there but my daughter (UM student) loves it. I look forward to going there again."

  • "Came here with a friend before a show, and we let the waitress know we were on a time constraint. She was very accommodating and made sure we got out on time. Mac and cheese with chorizo was rich and cheesy and filling. Sweet potato fries are a reliable favorite. I've been to Sava's many times, and I still never get tired of it."

  • "Good place just a bad flow coming from the buffet to your table not enough space to walk back to your table between u and the waiters"

  • "I enjoyed a delicious post Valentine dinner with my husband and sons recently. I would highly recommend trying Sava's Their entree specials are very inventive and tasty. I would highly recommend trying one because the specials change every evening. Our server was extremely knowledgable which added to our dining experience. The only small complaint that I would make is that the music is a little loud…I felt like I was in a energetic upscale salon at first…but after a while you don't really hear it while you have conversations at your table."

  • "My husband and I chose Sava's for a Valentine's Day lunch. It was a first-time visit, and we thoroughly enjoyed the lively atmosphere and the friendly, responsive service. Best of all, however, was the food. My salmon burger was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and served with an Asian slaw. Our waitress suggested I also get the sweet potato fries--and she was so right. These fries are crisp on the outside and tender on the inside--the best I have ever had. My husband chose a smoked salmon crepe with roasted potatoes, and he too raved about his lunch. It was simply a wonderful experience, and we will definitely choose Sava's again."

  • "Don't go on a Friday or Saturday evening without a reservation. Lately, we've been getting seated upstairs near the back stairs, and those seats can get mighty cold in the winter if staff use that back door frequently. I prefer the booths upstairs, or the tables with a view of the first level. Our most recent visit was for Valentine's Day and we had a fantastic server who was very friendly, prompt, and respectful of our special event dinner. They had a single rose in a little vase on each table. We ordered the polenta fries (delicious) and each had the dinner menu filet mignon (medium-rare). One of the filet's centers was still pretty rare, but the other was just right all-through."

  • "Pros: + Delicious food - I ate the Fried Green Tomato Po' Boy and it was excellent! I have never had green tomatoes before so it was fun to try something new. I would also highly recommend the sweet potato fries which can be split between two people. Very tasty! +Quality service - Our waitress kept filling up our glasses and checking in on our table which was nice considering it was a busy Sunday afternoon. + Option of Sunday Brunch or Menu - On Sunday, you can order off the menu or decide to go for the brunch ($18). The price seems high but I think for the quality of food and variety, it would be worth if for some people. Cons: +Super busy! I highly recommend making reservations if you go in on a Sunday!"

  • "Went for dinner with several friends and enjoyed it very much. The Duck Duo was very good. The service was excellent, except for an error in the bill. Fortunately, our server took care of it and corrected it promptly. Sava's has an very good choice of beer, wine, and mixed drinks."

  • "Our group had a early dinner at Sava's, seated on the upper level overlooking the main dining space. Much quieter than downstairs which can get pretty noisy. Small plates, a couple of entrees to share; interesting but not remarkable food and rather uneven. The waitstaff recommended excellent wine. But please, Sava! If you serve espresso, it should be a) really espresso and not a burned-tasting regular coffee reduction. b) served in espresso cups, not coffee cups -- it's unattractive and gets cold and c) lose the lemon peel. Sava's is the most grown up restaurant on this part of campus, but they have a few bugs to work out. We like going there, though and will go back."

  • "Overall good experience during Restaurant Week, although they ran out of one entre that two out of three of our party ordered. Good service but not very informed re: cocktails. Food was tasty and nicely presented. Desserts were much too sweet for our taste. More refined, smaller portions would have been better."

  • "I came here with a friend for a late night dinner, and it was so satisfying. I chose the Cobb wrap with a side of sweet potato fries. Always get the sweet potato fries: they are so delicious, especially with the dipping sauce. The wrap was also very good; the chicken was tender and the bacon was a nice texture. I cleaned my plate. My friend got the fried green tomato po' boy with a side of regular fries, and she said her choices were also very good. Sandwich and fries looked deceptively manageable, but we left feeling stuffed, but happy."
