A word from Saul
After 14 successful years in the neighborhood, Boerum Hill’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Saul, has moved to a new and larger space in the world-renowned Brooklyn Museum. Chef Saul Bolton has collaborated with the Brooklyn Museum and Restaurant Associates to bring the vibrant community a remodeled and refined version of the lauded New American restaurant. Chef Bolton also oversees food and beverage for the Museum’s café, the Counter.

Available a la carte, prix fixed, or via a chef’s tasting, the menus at Saul are inspired both by the season’s bounty, as well as the products and ingredients sourced from the restaurant’s long-standing artisanal purveyors. Guests will find a number of old favorites on the menu, in addition to several re-imagined newcomers. To complement Chef Bolton’s fare is Saul’s impressive wine list and cocktail program where mixologist Dan Carlson has created a number of seasonal libations for guests to enjoy.

  • "We went for brunch and the food was tasty, but everything was presented as a big slab, everything was super thick. My bloody Mary was like a smoothie, the toast was ridiculously thick cut, the bacon was super thick, my croque madame was on that super thick bread it was impossible to eat without it falling apart. I wanted to rename the restaurant Slab's."

  • "We are foodies down to our socks and have dined all over the globe but this dining experience knocked us out. We were four people on a Sunday night and it was quiet so we had the most attentive and gracious service imaginable, even the kitchen staff came out to greet us and explain the dishes. The food was beyond description, complex and distinctive yet each ingredient was treated with respect. The wine pairings were thoughtful, delectable, and reasonably priced. Lastly if you dine there at night you have a little taste of what it is like to be in a museum when it is closed to the public and that is a rare privilege. It was sublime."

  • "Brunch has somewhat limited choices. The special-a fish plate was excellent, but the eggs in polenta was spiced with a lot of pepper and was unannounced in the menu. Probably should have complained and sent it back. The pepper should have been an option. Asked for some fruit and was told that it wasn't possible-for brunch??? When the bar area was topped by lots of fruit used in the drinks? Baked Alaska dessert for my birthday was excellent. Maybe brunch is not it's forte!"

  • "We waited a long time to use a gift certificate to the Saul's on Smith street. We had to wait until the Saul's at the Brooklyn Museum opened. It was worth the wait. Each bite of food and dessert was an experience of joy. The servers were attentive and knowledgeable. The decor is plain and beautiful. It is so much fun eating in the museum. We went on a Saturday night, did an hour of the museum, and went to early dinner. It was soooo quiet in the museum at night - awesome. We wish Saul; the best of luck. Publicize it more, though. Is there a party room? Thanks for a great evening."

  • "The Brooklyn Museum itself was amazing, but I have great regret at choosing to end it up at Saul. The dining room is noisy and the ambiance mediocre, but the biggest problem was the service. Several tables around us were also complaining and we didn't want to make a fuss, but the 2 1/2 hours we spent at the restaurant made me feel like a hostage. Our server had a serene and accommodating demeanor, but she seemed unequipped to handle the basic timing of service. We ordered the tasting menu and found that the time between courses was interminable, and the wine pairing ordered by my husband was erratically served as well. He enjoyed the wine and the food, though I felt it way below the standard implied by the tasting format and the price."

  • "I had been to Saul in Carrol Gardens and had a wonderful experience. no so this time. the rib eye steak was very good, but my scalops were salty. I planned to have the octopus as an apetizer but the table next to mine advised against it as theirs was rubbery. I only return to places that are consistent. will not be back"

  • "The room is very nice and the service was fine. And it is wonderful to look at great art before or after the meal. But the food was not outstanding; also overpriced. The wine was delicious--a pinot noir, but again, in my opinion,overpriced. I ordered an espresso which arrived as a full American coffee in an espresso cup and was awful. The waitress took it off our bill immediately."

  • "We were disappointed at the Restaurant Week menu. The sashimi I had which I think was sardines, was excellent. My entree was fish and was also good. I thought that the vegetable portion was rather skimpy. I was disappointed that the octopus that was listed on the menu was not available. The servers were excellent and very attentive. The noise level was low. It was an attractive restaurant. A very long time elapsed between the appetizer and the entree. The kitchen seemed way behind."

  • "We had read great things about the "old" Saul in Smith St but missed the opportunity to go before they moved the restaurant to Brooklyn Museum. We were not disappointed! The food was excellent, especially the Spanish charred octopus appetizer, monkfish and pork entrees, and the chocolate selection dessert. Just delicious. The waiter made great suggestions and matched the wines by the glass to suit our order very well. We'll be going again."

  • "I was wondering how Saul would compare with Saul's, one of my favorite restaurants in Carroll Gardens. I was not disappointed in the food, which remains top notch. Saul still provides amuse bouches, crunchy roasted quinoa on greens, totally decadent parsnip soup, exquisite wild bass and lamb tasting including the neck and belly. Saul is now in the Brooklyn Museum and it is quite sleek with lighting that didn't feel quite right and made it feel a bit too cold. My friend and I are hoping it succeeds, but are worried people may not make the trip to a museum restaurant and it would be hard, perhaps, to survive on just museum traffic, especially because it is not inexpensive. Try to make it!"

Portions were small and it does not feel like an upscale dining experience.Restaurant was half empty when I ate there on Saturday night. There are many excellent restaurants nearby, the owner would have been better off making a higher end cafe for the Brooklyn Museum."

  • "Wait staff and kitchen, while very pleasant, are grossly undertrained. Brunch for 2--my dish arrived yet we waited and waited and waited for my friend's. No word until we flagged down someone to ask. 'It'll be here shortly.' Another 5 minutes and nothing. After 25 minutes, the 2nd dish arrived. No one offered to take my dish back and make another. (the dish was good warm or cold, and plus I just wanted out of there so I didn't press the issue.) And we weren't the only diners experiencing this problem!!!! Another couple next to us got one dish and not the other. The food was good, a great perk for the museum ideally, but really it blemished our whole outing. No apologies from ANYONE, nor explanations."

The food was artistically arranged on the plates and well prepared but not exceptional. The dessert chosen (petites fours) was sad, hardly more than one might find in a supermarket.. So much for Saul."

Only bread available is $12 fried buttered toast, seriously??? Servers = attitude w/o smiles. Ignoring customers seems to be par for the course. You will leave hungry!"

  • "We went for brunch before visiting the Brooklyn Museum. While the food was absolutely delicious, the service and visitor experience left a lot to be desired. Two of our brunch appetizer selections were no longer available (and we were not made aware previous to ordering). For some reason, they ran out of creamer vessels, and the waitress had to pout steamed milk at the table (which was odd). Our order did not come out together (my brunch came out 5 minutes after my dining partner). Also, one of our items was not put in. For the price and the necessary reservations, I felt that the service should have been exceptional."

  • "Saul moved from Smith Street before we had an opportunity to try it, so we were very happy to be able to combine a visit to the restaurant with an evening program we had tickets for at the museum. The restaurant is a "10" in every respect. My husband and I shared the grilled octopus appetizer; he had the monkfish and I had the venison. Everything from the amuse bouche to dessert (pistachio cake) was simply excellent. Highly recommend this restaurant whether you're combining it with a visit to the museum or not."

The food was imaginative and delicious; however, absurdly overpriced ($58 for prix fixe lunch with a glass of fair wine)! Very limited menu and hard wooden chairs also need improvement."

  • "Two friends for brunch so it is a limited review. We were eager to try the restaurant and I must say I had expectations. Service was quite slow and it was not crowded. Perhaps because they are newly opened? Food was rather uneventful. I ordered the polenta with poached eggs and broccoli rabe. I had three teeny pieces of broccoli rabe (just over a tablespoon's worth). Poached eggs were slightly undercooked. Polenta was warm and great texture but lacked interest. Coffee was strong and hot. It appeared our waitress was brand new and forgot to check on us. Had to wave her over to take our order after getting menus, wave for more coffee, and again for the check... The space is lovely and will try again."

  • "In moving to the Brooklyn Museum, Saul lost what made it Saul. On Smith Street it established a high level of service and quality. At the new location they've lost a step. I've been twice, for dinner and for brunch; and each time there were significant problems with service, with timing of the meals, with mistakes and shortages. Also, at brunch, much of the menu is a la carte, including items usually included... like toast. The toast is delicious; but it feels ungenerous to charge for it as a side dish. We loved Saul's on Smith Street, it was a special destination, but we're not in a hurry to go back."

  • "Small esoteric menu but quite good - venue in museum (Brooklyn Museum) which is quite interesting - open room with very modest noise level. Well done. Relaxed atmosphere. Street parking available on streets around museum and there is a subway directly outside museum. . I had some esoteric pork dish and I am not a pork guy so my judgement regarding this dish is not really fair but venison, steak, octopus appetizer, and desserts were quite remarkable."

First was with a group of 25+ - Rob, the manager was terrific, helpful, gracious and worked with us from start to finish - the food and staff were really on top of their game, and they offered us a very reasonable price. The second time, two nights ago, was just with my daughter and her partner - Rob remembered us, treated us beautifully, and the food, again, was really really good. Nice ambience - the museuam, during the night, seems an invisible, but quiet presence. Especially recommend the squab, octopus, and baked alaska"

  • "Tiny portions of terrible food! I have never before written a restaurant review, but I have to this time. Saul was a HUGE disappointment. The food sounded fantastic but was completely tasteless. Not just bland -- tasteless. I had two appetizers -- fennel and mackerel. Both were just awful. Not only that, I ate every bite and was still hungry. Had I not been going out for an early dinner I would have gone right to the cafe to get something else to eat. It's a nice setting. I hope they get their act together, because it's a great idea for the museum to have a high-end restaurant. But I'm sorry to say that right now it's a complete waste of time and money."

  • "Saul, which recently moved from Smith Street to the Brooklyn Museum, has always enjoyed an excellent reputation, and the quality has not fallen off. The dishes ($12-18 appetizers, $28-35 mains) are delicious and attractively presented, with a couple of interesting specials nightly. Service is attentive but not intrusive. The room's acoustics are not ideal, but tables are spaced far enough apart to allow conversation without bellowing. Music levels are low, but why have music at all? I myself would prefer it turned off entirely. I live in North Flatbush/Prospect Lefferts Gardens, which has some nice places to eat but till now no fine-dining option this side of Cortelyou Road. A very welcome addition."
