Diner Reviews
  • "I had been to Saucebox before I decided to take my group of female coworkers here for a mentoring dinner, but I had only had the bar experience. Sitting down for a nice meal in their back room with a group was fabulous. The food was amazing and their drink menu is extensive. I will definitely come back for their bar and restaurant experience."

  • "We used to go there when it first opened years ago. It was mostly a bar (with great food) at the time. I remember a Pho noodle dish that was superb. We moved to the suburbs and kind of forgot about Saucebox, but re-visited last weekend after a movie downtown. It still has interesting Asian fusion food, a dark bar, and also a nice, bright dining area behind the bar. The food was good, but not as good as my memory of that original noodle dish. It could be that at the time there were very few great food places in PDX, so anything above average really sticks in my mind. I would still recommend Saucebox - especially good for drinks and appetizers. The bar is quite lively."

  • "Really diverse, fun cocktail list and a cool room make this a good place to head for a girls' night out. The food was good but def not "fit for foodies" good. Nice low lighting and good music give it a fun vibe."

  • "Thanks to Saucebox for making my birthday dinner special! The service was amazing, drinks were awesome, and the food was delicious! This dinner experience is going to be repeated, because Saucebox is my new favorite place to eat!"

  • "The food was great! The drinks were interesting and tasty! We were seated in the corner and could have touched the people at the table next to us. When we arrived for our 5:30 reservation not many people were they yet. We asked to be moved to another table, but were told that the other tables were reserved. By the time we left close to 630 there were still open tables that we could have been seated at. Be sure ask to not be seated in the corner."

  • "I had only been to Saucebox once before for happy hour, but selected it during Portland dining month for dinner. Was pleasantly that their dining area was spacious and quiet. The food was delicious. Would highly recommend it for anyone interested."

  • "The drinks were top notch, the food was amazing and the service was fantastic. I was a little worried about the noise from the very crowded bar, but the restaurant was not overwhelmingly loud. I would recommend this spot for a nice date night."

  • "While the food and service at Saucebox are very good, if you are seeking a dining experience this may not be your place. The bar is great. But the dining room lacks warmth and the very loud thumping music that works in the bar is overpowering in the stark dining room. The dining room was great at holiday time when the beautiful flocked trees muffled some of the noise. But when we dined there on Feb 16, 2014 we could not wait to be relieved of the loud music. Every now and then there was a break in the music but it always returned, like a bad headache...bummer."

  • "The choices were reasonable, but the portions were quite small and it was very expensive for an appetizer, main course and dessert. - $50. It was also quite annoying that they threatened to charge my credit card (required at reservations) $25 PER PERSON for failing to cancel within 48 hours. I hope this does not become a trend or I will become a former customer."

  • "This restaurant had great atmosphere, excellent service, great drinks and poor food combinations. To continue in business, I strongly suggest that the restraint owner rethink the menu combinations. There needs to be more offered along with the main dish; my wife basically got a plate of chicken; I got a plate of steak. Now, if there were a starch added to the side, maybe a nice vegetable with it or just something to balance out the meat, my rating would go way up. There is a reason why this place is not filling up."

  • "Saucebox seems tired. The menu doesn't seem to have changed in years. Food is good but not great although Happy Hour is still one of the better ones."

  • "There were 12 of us who gathered for dinner before a show. We were in the upstairs area, which was great for groups since we were out of the hustle and bustle downstairs a bit. Service was a little slow, but we were enjoying the conversations so it was really noticed all that much until we had to hurry out to catch our show. The food was delicious. Everyone had nothing but good things to say about what they ordered. And a great drink menu - there were some fun new ones we tried!"

  • "Took my executive team to dinner at Saucebox the other night. The food, drinks and service were fantastic. This place has been around for a while, but it remains some of the best food in town (Javanese Salmon is one of the best dishes ever)."

  • "We went here for or New Year's Eve dinner and party and it was a great experience! It was a preset dinner menu and everything turned out great. The only negative was that our drinks took quite awhile to get to the table (never fun especially on New Year's Eve). However our waiter was great and that made up for the slow drink service. The restaurant and bar was completely packed and after dinner we rolled into the bar where they had a DJ and dancing. Great times!"

  • "Whenever i come into town, i make it a point to visit Saucebox. I never leave disappointed!!! The food is always on point, the service is good, and the setting was beautiful this time of year. Generally, i gather with a group of friends, but it great for a happy hour or a special dinner for two. Oh, i almost forgot, the drinks menu is phenominal!!!"

  • "We had a largely great experience here and would go back just to try additional items off the menu. Everything we order was flavorful and fresh, and service was exemplary. The only negative to the evening was that we made reservations in advance, but our table wasn't ready so we had to wait about 30 minutes. The place is so small that the only place to wait is standing in the bar/entryway, but it was toward the end of Happy Hour so there was really no place to stand without being in the way. To the staff's credit, they recognized this problem before we were able to complain, and offered us a flute of the house sparkling wine with a gracious apology. Well done, and well appreciated!"

  • "We had a large group (10) meeting at Saucebox and reserved a table through OpenTable. The reservation was confirmed, but when we arrived, they were not able to accommodate our group. We like this place so much we decided to sit at the bar and wait until the dinner crowd died down. The drinks were amazing. We eventually got our table and had food, which was also amazing! Thanks for accommodating our group and providing excellent service!!"

  • "They were out of two of the main courses by 7pm on Saturday-and our group had made the reservation 4 weeks previous. The service was ridiculously slow-and to top it off the server didn't bring the bill to the people in our party in an adequate time before they departed so we got stuck with a $300+ bill at the end of the night. I will never go back, and would never recommend this place. So disappointed! This was a celebration for my 40th bd- happy bd to me, I guess."

  • "Saucebox has some of the BEST drinks ever (Kickboxer and Brandy Alexander), however everything is pretty pricey. If you're a group of 8 or more be sure to figure out the 20% mandatory tip before paying! Our server was awesome and friendly, too bad I forgot his name. Overall I've had only pleasant experiences here and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a nice night out."

  • "I waited a very long time to eat at this restaurant. First things first, they need to update the hours and days they are open on their website. Came on a Sunday and they were closed, but listed as open at 6 on their website. Finally went in about a month later and had a 9.45 dinner reservation, and literally stood at the door for a full 5 minutes until the hostess/ server seated us. Which is ridiculous because there was only one other table seated in the restaurant, and 2 people at the bar! I almost left because that is unacceptable. The food was alright, nothing special, and over priced. Needless to say, for being so excited to eat there, I will never return."

  • "I have eaten at Saucebox several times over the years and loved it. The food is so creative and unique. However, this time it seemed the only flavor on the menu was hot and spicy. A lot of the other favors were masked by the over peppering of every dish we ordered. The only issue I have with that is the menu doesn't have any indication that the dishes we selected would be so spicy (specifically the mussels and the papaya salad). The service was fantastic as usual. Not sure whether we will go back or not..."

  • "My wife and I dined at Saucebox recently as part of our weekly "date night" outing. The good vibes began when we were greeted with a smile upon arrival and quickly shown to our table in the dining area. As we entered we noticed the vibrant bar scene full of patrons enjoying themselves in the upscale yet comfortable bar/lounge. The food is GREAT. For starters we had the crispy Brussels sprouts and the sweet potato spring rolls. Our entrees consisted of the Javanese salmon (me) and the Korean Baby Back ribs. Together with the wine and the cocktail we ordered to complete our meal along with prompt and attentive service by our server - this was an amazing dining experience overall! Thank You!"

  • "We (4 people) had dinner the other night. This is my second time to be there and I didn't know they had a quiet dinner table area on the first floor. It was different atmosphere from bar area, much quieter and spacey. All the food we had were tasty, hot, and service was great. My only question was: why they choose the hard wood chairs and hard sofa for such a nice dining room. It might be good for young people but they looked like stools in classrooms and unmatched to such a fancy place. Bad for lower back, uncomfortable."

  • "Dined at Saucebox mid-week, and it was a very nice dinning experience. The staff was extremely attentive, food delivered quickly / elegantly prepared, with wonderful flavors. I had several sushi dishes which were delicious; we also ordered a salmon entree which was cooked as requested and very good. Cocktails were done well, and the wine list is decent. Overall, a nice experience."

  • "Delicious Dim Sums, then Fabulous Entrees (Game Hen and Pork Shank) for dinner and got to take the leftovers for breakfast and lunch(!), with delicious drinks, wine, and beer options. Waiter was solicitous, but not hovering, which I love. Noise level high, likely, as there is so much open space in the back room, and no absorption materials, kind of stark, but pretty."
