Diner Reviews
  • "We keep going back to Sauce for many reasons. Great location to grab a great dinner before a show at the Jazz Center, opera or symphony. Good sensibility on the part of the staff to diners with deadlines and curtain times. If you want cozy and sumptuous, dine in the intimate Supper Club room. Or enjoy bright and comfy table and booth service in the front. Love the tater tots. Salmon was fab and the veggie strudel was perfect. Had a lovely Pinot. Sturdy menu to please all tastes with old favorites retained (the sliders!) and new yummy dishes featured as well. Friendly, accomodating staff from front to back. We will definitely be back."

  • "I had tickets to take my dad to the symphony for his birthday. We live in the south bay and I needed to find a restaurant that was close to Symphony Hall (Dad has issues walking). I googled "restaurants close to Davies" and this is one that popped up. It looked close and wasn't a chain so I made a blind reservation. What a gem! Cocktails were amazing. Best Manhattan I have ever had! The food was divine. Everything was cooked perfectly. And the service was perfect. For basically throwing a dart at the map, I could not have made a better choice. I cannot wait to return!"

  • "We ate here prior to attending the ballet, which was very convenient. We were running late, but called and the host was very accommodating. The food and atmosphere were very nice. Our waitress, while competent, did not add anything to the experience; very little-to-no personality that I saw. All in all, it got the job done and we enjoyed our dishes, especially the portobello mushroom bisque and steak!"

  • "Our table was in a great spot, the place was cozy, the menu was small but everything we ordered (party of four) was great, including the dessert doughnuts at the end."

  • "This was our first time at Sauce. We loved the experience. The menu is unique and compelling. Hard to chose what you wanted because all menu items sounded so good. The service was terrific. We will be returning. Nice little find near the Davies Symphony Hall."

  • "Sauce at Gough is like pulling on a favorite wool sweater - it just makes the world seem that much better. Top-notch service with a kitchen that turns out familiar food with an emphasis on quality. Sometimes you just want to have a good meal to send you on your way to the next event."

  • "The front was unassuming. The menu was "OK" but not really exciting. We sat in the back room, a little dark, but quieter. Then we ordered a light meal. The food was spectacularly good. The Portobello Mushroom Bisque was gluten-free, a rich, dark soup with a fabulous flavor. The octopus salad was made of paper-thin slices of poached octopus on a bed of greens, just wonderful. And the oysters were so fresh we could taste the sea. We had a merlot that was to die for. And berries and cream for dessert: four enormous strawberries served on a mound of hand-whipped fresh cream, sweetened ever so delicately. We will be back."

  • "Loved this restaurant, just a short walk from drinks at Martunis. It was the perfect find for a group celebration of my friend's wedding. Food was delicious, reasonably priced, service was perfect and they did not rush us through our meal. We had a great evening together to cap off a memorable day."

  • "Went to dinner there with my boyfriend before a show at Davies Symphony Hall. Great food and beer. The mini meatloaf on a bed of mashed potatoes drizzled with gravy was amazing! Loved our sliders, they were corn beef that day. Cooked perfect and so original. We split the fried chicken, and good thing we did because it was huge! I'm usually a low carb eater but the noodles that came with it were so buttery and good, seriously great splurge. The red tomato sauce that came with the chicken was so chunky and homemade tasting, very refreshing pairing with fried chicken. Also, the chicken itself was cooked so well, breaded perfectly. Con: Men at table close to us made no effort to be polite, so loud, rude, cursing, bros in sales..."

  • "This was my second time at Sauce. The first time I was with a large family group and ate in the back dining room. This time a friend and I went for an early dinner before a theater date. We sat at a small table in front with a street view - very charming. Our waitress was very attentive, even answering our questions about parking. We started with the brussels sprout salad which I'd had the first time and was dying to have again. I was not disappointed - the tender brussels sprout leaves lightly coated with a slightly sweet dressing was just as amazing as I'd remembered. A cup of the portabello mushroom soup came next - rich, creamy, earthy flavors - stunning. Our entree was also outstanding but I've run out of room. Go!"

  • "I enjoyed the meal, we had a cold Brussels leaf salad, very good. We shared the shortrib Wellington and Vegeterian Studel, they were both very good but wer thought the Vegeterian Strudle was outstanding in taste."

  • "Warm and welcoming, we enjoyed dinner for 10 at Sauce on a Saturday night. The service was excellent and the food was as well. The group enjoyed trying many of the starters- the standout was the award winning portobello fries. The cocktail menu had vintage go-tos with a twist- mexican mule and honey sidecar were amazing! The entrees looked fabulous when they came out and everyone enjoyed them as well. There was a good crowd there and it cleared out in time for curtain at the ballet. For going to an intimate restaurant with a large group on a Saturday night- those conditions generally invite disaster but the Sauce team worked it out with style."

  • "Sauce is very convenient for before-theater dining and the food is consistently good. Their crab cakes on slaw were excellent recently and I often begin with the iceberg wedge with plenty of blue cheese dressing--a tad too much red onion though--and presented like a large flower blossom. The tater tots with bacon, compliments of the couple at the next table are too good and the smashed ice cream dessert a delicious indulgence. Service is friendly and professional although the server took my spouse's salad plate before I had finished my salad."

  • "First time at Sauce on Gough in Hayes Valley and we will definitely be back and soon. Everything was delicious and we all agreed the New England am chowder was by far the best we ever had anywhere. I had the chicken Parmesan and my wife had the pork chop, both fabulous. I heartily recommend Sauce as a wonderful neighborhood dining joy and look forward to dining there again soon."

  • "Is it too much to ask for a friendly server, a smile, and decent food? Foodies may love the attitude, but I like food. It's not worth the hassle, noise, and limited menu to come here."

  • "Good for before concert dining- they were also accommodating even though we were running a bit late-they let first person in party sit at table until we got there. We started with small plates to share- tater tots- so- so a bit leaden (food here in general is very rich, high calorie), mushroom fries- tasty, sliders good. Then we had the fried chicken (very moist), hanger steak (excellent and cooked to right degree of med rare as requested), fish of day (very tender and fresh), All portions were quite sizeable. Service very good, attentive but not hovering. We also shared an order of the bacon- was not as great as reviewers suggested. Bill was reasonable -with nice bottle of wine- under $160 for 3 people with tip."

  • "I ate here Wednesday night because we had to go to the theater and some of my more favorite restaurants were not available. So using yelp and open table, I discovered Sauce. The food was fabulous. Very inventive. I had the salad with pears and pecans and it was uniquely different with a little bit of a sprinkling of brown sugar on the top that made it wonderful. He just chose the salmon which was perfectly cooked over a salad including pieces of bacon and All around us, people were choosing small plates that they were sharing. And we decided we definitely have to come back and definitely have to try the small plates. There were many choices and they all looked wonderful. I highly recommend this restaurant with it's inventive cuisine."

  • "It was everything that the show on Channel LVW network advised. I saw this perchance on the television and everyone raved about the portabello mushroom fries and the dessert sampler so I had to go with my fiance and have their food. Also, they were very accommodating which made me more accommodating to the food list and everything."

  • "We only discovered Sauce about a year ago, and from our first visit, I was asking myself, "How could I have taken so long to discover this gem?" We've probably eaten there half a dozen times since then – usually after a symphony concert or SHN show – and my enthusiasm hasn't waned a bit. Food is fresh, creative, relatively healthy, and generously portioned, at what I think are quite fair prices. I've fallen in love with the Brazin Old Vine Zinfandel, available by the glass at Sauce, and I'd be tempted to stop in just for that. Service is always friendly and attentive. The fact that they are open late and serve dinner until at least midnight – sometimes later – is just icing on the cake (but important icing!) I can say only good things."

  • "I'm from NYC where most meals are over priced. I have no problem paying top dollar for a great meal. But the food here was really overpriced considering the quality. We started off with oysters, which were great and then the crab cakes which were alright. I ordered the chicken with parpadelle and it was terrible! The tomato sauce tasted like it was from a bad pizza place, the pasta was over cooked and soggy and chicken was definitely not crusted well at all. I would have returned it, but I was starving and my waitress never checked up on us to see how our meal was. I ate would I could and immediately asked for the bil. It was a very attractive menu. Unfortunately not very well executed and too expensive for the quality."

  • "This is a friendly little restaurant with an adventurous menu. I was dining before the symphony, but the bar scene also seemed pretty lively with lots of special cocktails and a fairly young crowd. And, if you're a Shark's fan…this is your place; the bartender is a big Shark's hockey fan. The menu offers a different take on some items, like the "wellington" as well as polenta or portabello fries, grilled cheese to die for, poutine …The menu seems to change frequently to keep it interesting. Check it out!"

  • "It is surprising how many Chefs overcook the fish. NOT so at Sauce! We had the most perfectly, succulently prepared salmon we have had in years. It was a simple dish, but fresh ingredients and taste. If this place was closer to the Symphony Hall, you wouldn't be able to get in!! We definitely recommend Sauce."

  • "I brought a large group here for a team dinner. We stuck with small plates so we could try more things. It's not French Laundry, but every dish we had was a real delight. This is comfort food at its best. Service was fine, and it wasn't particularly loud - in fact, any noise in the restaurant probably came from us. I'd most definitely return."

  • "Sauce had a great menu with both familiar and unique selections. The restaurant-side was very quiet and consisted of mostly couples (it was Valentine's day) while the bar-side had a few singles. Our waitress was courteous, prompt and efficient. The food we ordered was delicious! We had the mac-and-cheese as an appetizer which was splendid. Our main courses, the pork chops and wellington, were both well-cooked and sizable portions. However, the desserts took the cake, no pun intended. We had the dessert sampler and it was amazing, by far the best part of the meal. Definite recommendation."

  • "Came here on a roll of a dice finding it on open table since all the recommendations of friends we're all booked for the time we wanted to have dinner. Was definitely glad that we were able to get a table as this place was definitely great. The selection of house cocktails can be a hit or miss depending on your taste buds but they have a full bar and good wine list if none of their house cocktails sound appealing. Food overall was excellent -- had the short rib wellington which was excellent especially with the accompanying vegetables. Had the mini dessert sampler which was a good choice as we got to taste a little bit of everything. Ambiance can be somewhat loud but not loud enough that you can't hear your company. Overall great place!"

  • "2nd time here, once for cocktails and this time for food. My wife had a pork chop and I had the salmon. Both dishes were excellent, and the salad with the salmon was very impressive! Our server Lindsay was on her "A" game and served us very well. Fast efficient, and what a smile. Of course we had to have a little something after our entree, so it was smores across from me and berry & cream for me. WOW! My only issue with Sauce is the spacing between tables. You actually sit very close to people which makes for not being able to have a personal conversation with a date. The place is small, and needs to expand! The meal and the service were worth the trip and I would go back again to eat there!"

Perfect for after a performance for some quality late night food. The bar is also a nice place to sit and have an appetizer and enjoy a cocktail with the friendly bartenders who go out of their way to make every guest feel at home."
