Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little yellow house has "seen it all" from the early hippie movement of the 60"s to the lack of movement that comes from too much Bordeaux.   • "We went to Sassafraz for a friend's birthday and it happened to be during summerlicious... Service was excellent, food was lackluster... And because we were a large group (11) - we were seated in the event space upstairs. The space was ok- but lacked the ambience and vibrancy of the main area. The drinks were great... But food was disappointing. I doubt that any of my party would be returning to the restaurant. It's too bad... Perhaps their regular menu would have been preferable... Useful to note that the summerlicious- with tax, drinks and tip- came out to more than double the summerlicious price..."

  • "I've been hearing all about this place for years, so finally decided to try it out for Summerlicious. I tried the salmon and pork t-bone, and the salmon was the better of the two; the pork was dry and tough. The tomato appetizer was rather dull, but fresh tasting, and the dessert lacked (not to mention greasy finger prints were visible all over my dish -- oops!). As for the service, it was SLOW. It took us almost two hours to dine for lunch, and the place was not even at capacity. The only thing Sassafraz has going for it is the atmosphere which is well above average. When you enter the main dining room, you are pleasantly greeted with lots of natural light (from skylights) and a wall of lush plants. Beautiful!"

  • "This was a very enjoyable lunch. The service was prompt and our waiter was very pleasant. Our party ordered a variety of food and all of us thought the flavour and presentation was excellent. Although we were directed to a particular table, we asked if we could sit at another table and were told it was no problem. Many places do not like you to sit elsewhere. Good for Sassafraz for making the customer come first. We will return."

  • "Atmosphere and service is always welcoming! The Summerlicious menu was OK but lacked vegetarian options. Pasta with cream sauce is not a health friendly dish which left the vegetarians in our group with no choice. The rest of the group enjoyed their meal. The drinks were very refreshing. I will be back for winterlicious depending on the menu choices. I would truly love to back. We enjoyed the place very much, and service was not too intrusive just right."

  • "We asked to take back one of our orders (lam chop) because it was undercooked and the waiters took it back and brought a new, better cooked lamb with no problems. The ambience was great and the service was simply excellent and the staff was friendly and efficient no matter what the request!"

  • "My daughter and I were looking for dinner and came by the restaurant. She had the tuna and I had the gespacho. It was so good, we had to come back. It was just as good. With the siracha sauce, edamame and purple potatoes, it is a lovely meal. Tomato salad was very refreshing and the soup had just the right amount of heat."

  • "My duck breast was over the top fantastic, but my wife's halibut was overdone and dry, and the bearnaise was almost non-existent. She asked for extra bearnaise to help offset the dryness of the halibut. The service was terrific- friendly and knowledgeable Appetizers of oysters- they were nice and clean- not gritty The Nova Scotia Digby scallops were amazing"

  • "Our server Jessica was amazing! Consistently made sure that everything was good! Checked on us very frequently. Was knowledgeable in the venue. Did not rush us to leave although we were there over 2 hours. The food was great! The soup was amazing! I wanted more. The grilled cheese was outstanding. We got it split for each of us as if each plate was a separate order- we were impressed! The ambience was romantic, the couches were very comfortable! The music was perfect! I will definitely be back!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 1st anniversary at Sassafraz. We were treated to the most romantic table in the house, a wonderful little nook in the back between their beautiful living wall and impressive wine room. It muted the noise, and made for a very romantic spot. Servers were attentive and very knowledgeable about the cuisine. For appetizers, she had the scallops and I the fired green tomatoes. Scallops wonderfully smokey and complex, the tomatoes a perfect mix of sweet and tart. For entrees, the bison and tenderloin. Cooked perfectly, paired with delicious sides. Dessert: Esspresso cheesecake and milk chocolate mousse; scrumptious."

  • "The waiter was very friendly , I drink water like a machine but every time my glass was low it was always filled back up. Complimentary dessert was given which was a pleasantry. The meat was just fabulous, i had beef tenderloin well done and It was perfect quality, the meat was not burnt , it was cooked throughout. It was just a terrific night and it wouldn't have been possible without the great service. I give tip where it's due , and it was certainly due here. "

  • "We loved our dinner at Sassafraz. Food was delicious, we had beef, Cornish hen, lamb and fish, everything was exquisite. As starters we had green fried tomatoes and buffala mozzarella, which were very fresh and tasteful. Nice decor and excellent service. The only negative point was the karaoke noise coming from the private party room. Other than that, I would definitely recommend the restaurant as a great choice for special occasions."

  • "The food, service and ambiance were fine...totally acceptable. However, for the price of dinner I would have expected more. We paid about $250 for apps and mains for two plus a bottle of white wine. There are many places in the neighbourhood that are more reasonably priced with as good (or better) food and service. I think you're paying for the name and the chance to see a celeb. That said, if someone offered to take me and was going to pay, I'd happily go again...just overpriced for me."

  • "Food was delicious. I would say the items on the menu were not very daring so would recommend for someone that enjoys well prepared foodie quality without unusual combinations and ingredients. The restaurant is beautiful, its much larger than I thought. I like a restaurant with energy, hustle and bustle but for the amount of people there I found it disturbingly noisy but this may have been due to one set of loud neighbours. Service was great, quick, very attentive and knowledgeable. Only snafu was with our bottle of wine which was opened and poured after our appetizers were halfway done. Location is great, in the heart of Yorkville and a stones throw from the subway. All in all it was good. I would go back. "

The food was well prepared and presented and allowances were made for my companions gluten allergy. The ambiance was elegant and relaxed, the service friendly and helpful and the dishes well executed."

The drinks and food came promptly and our waiter was very knowledgeable and provided suggestions for substitutions. We were there for over 2.5 hours but at no point in time did we feel rushed or pressured to leave. Sassafraz gets a 5 star rating from me! I highly recommend it! "

  • "Went for my birthday lunch with 3 of my closest friends and had such an amazing experience. Starting with my server Laurel, she gave us 1st class service from beginning to end. Going on to the food, we had three salads "to share" as starters, then had individual mains. Always recommend the scallop dish, served delicately in a dashi with forbidden rice. I highly recommend this place for a memorable time, food & service were fantastic."

  • "We ate here this week with a groupon that was going to expire on Wednesday. It was quite busy as the waiter said the other diners were here for the same reason. He had the flank steak which was the only meat option on the menu and he said it was tough. It looked nice on the plate though.I had the lamb shank and it was served on a bed of white beans cooked in tomato. It was huge. Way more than I could eat. I enjoyed it. We took our desserts to go so I can't comment on them as we haven't had them yet."

The decor is very chic with a waterfall running on one of the walls with plants and a soft earthy smell from all the plants and the running water, everything about the setup was really nice and comforting."
