Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little yellow house has "seen it all" from the early hippie movement of the 60"s to the lack of movement that comes from too much Bordeaux.   • "We ate here this week with a groupon that was going to expire on Wednesday. It was quite busy as the waiter said the other diners were here for the same reason. He had the flank steak which was the only meat option on the menu and he said it was tough. It looked nice on the plate though.I had the lamb shank and it was served on a bed of white beans cooked in tomato. It was huge. Way more than I could eat. I enjoyed it. We took our desserts to go so I can't comment on them as we haven't had them yet."

  • "Had a great time here, was the second time I've been. The food and service was good. But the best part of this place for me was the ambience. The decor is very chic with a waterfall running on one of the walls with plants and a soft earthy smell from all the plants and the running water, everything about the setup was really nice and comforting."

  • "I'd been meaning to go there for years but didn't take advantage until a Groupon came up. We were there on a Monday so it was quiet which was a plus. I could imagine it would be buzzing during TIFF with lots of celebrities. The special menu was extensive and very appealing - comfort food and foodie choice -- seafood chowder, lamb shank, flank steak, Cornish hen, etc. Food was well prepared and ample. The decor and ambiance was very elegant. I was attracted to the bar area which features a pianist on weekends, although I imagine it would get pretty busy. The service was very attentive and helpful with respect to questions about how things were prepared. My friend and I were quiet impressed and would return."

  • "Hello! I am from Calgary, here in Ontario for business. Two important things when away from home, is to create a space that provides that sense of comfort with great accommodations and good, fresh and healthy food. Your restaurant was recommended to me by a young man that lives in Toronto. He even bought his dad into the story saying it was a favorite of his as well. Long, story short, I loved the watercress salad, the bread, wine, our server Michael and dessert. The restaurant had good energy. Thank you for your care//service and efforts in all you do.   • "Alone, I brunch on the bar/café side, with its people-watching windows . With friends and family, I reserve a table in the beautiful green space. The wide back wall is a lavish green garden with a greenhouse ceiling, a perfect winter cheer-up. In summer there's also a sidewalk cafe. No matter where you sit, you get the same menu. The quality is more consistent than it used to be. Some dishes that reached too far for effect and didn't taste so good. Now, everything tastes lovely. It starts with perfect little crusty loaves, hot from the oven. For brunch, it's joined by fresh fruit. Each of us had a different brunch item, and all were delicious. I do wish there were a couple of lighter, less meaty options."

  • "I had dined at Sassafraz restaurant years ago before the renovation. Enjoyed it very much then and enjoyed it recently just as much. I love the way the restaurant looks now, the food is excellent but where I think the restaurant receives high marks is in the little touches and the service. Our waitress was absolutely a gem. She was lovely, very attentive, great with recommendations and accommodating requests. The servers were wonderful as well. Very classy all around. The Chef sent us out a nice sample of something he was making in the kitchen which I thought was a nice touch and at the end of the meal, he sent out wonderful chocolates with our coffees. We thought this was a wonderful touch. Will be back!"

  • "My boyfriend took me there (using a Groupon) for my birthday. This place was a little too noisy to be a romantic dinner but the service was very good and the food was amazing. I had the lamb shank and didn't even need to use the knife that was provided; the meat just fell off the bone. It was one of the best lamb shanks I've ever had. For dessert, I had their chocolate lava cake. I was arrived still a little warm and soft and gooey inside. Not super sweet like I thought it would be. Very enjoyable along with my marakesh (sp?) mint tea. I will definitely be going back and would like to take my mom with me next time."

Food was delicious, portions a tad small but that is to be expected here and with a groupon I suppose. Would I come again, yes with a groupon but not at the regular prices the restaurant charges to pricey for me."

Expected to be able to order a la carte from the regular menu using Groupon, but it looks like they've streamed lined the process to make the most profit from the deal so you are restricted to a fixed menu. Pretty much just like Winterlicious. Heard lots of great reviews and did not disappoint. Definitely a casual atmosphere with a hint of refinement in the heart of Yorkville. The restaurant is very clean and service was excellent. Waiters were a little on the "too casual" side at times when speaking to each other in front of guests, but not a big issues. Food was excellent and matched the casual refinement of the restaurant. Will definitely come back for another date night."

  • "Been here before and thought it was alright nothing amazing. Came here last weekend, ordered the lobster as appetizer and it was super acidic not to mention portion was so small like literally one piece. The other appetizer was the wild mushroom, which tasted normal. The bone marrow, on the other side, was extremely oily. I literally just want to leave the resturant, but thought of giving it another shot. The main courses were much better than the appetizer, though still doesn't measure up to its reputation."

  • "Came with a Groupon. Ambience: Amazing. I had come a few times before the fire & reno's, but this is the first time I've come since. Nicely done. Appetizers: The marrow was great, and the highlight of the meal. Wine: Andeluna from Mendoza, Argentina. Hard to compare, fantastic. Mains: they were ok. For the price, I don't think it's fair value. Hard to see why this is such a hotspot for celebs and such during TIFF. Dessert: Before this, I was ready to give them 4 stars. Their lava cake... didn't run. More like a brownie. In summary, I wouldn't choose to come back, but it's not "bad" food, just not great or good value."

The service was attentive without being overbearing: our waiter had lots of personality. A fine dining experience with no pretension. We were able to hear everyone speak in our group of 4 even though the dining room was full. Would go back, though wasn't totally blown away by any of my dishes."

  • "From making the reservations to service during our meal it was outstanding! Tried this restaurant on a Groupon deal. We have eaten at many different restaurants, but felt this was the most enjoyable dining experience we have ever had. We were given a nice table under the glass ceiling dome. The food was very good, and our dining companion ordered the stuffed cornish hen and felt it was to die for. This dining experience was outstanding because we had the most amazing service from our waiter James. He had a nice sense of humour, was very attentive, and just enjoyable to talk to. We highly recommend Sassafraz, and when you make a reservation you must request to be seated at a table where James is your waiter. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "Recently bought a Groupon for Sassafraz &booked a table for 4 last Sat. Food was very tasty & worth the money for sure. However the service lacked from what it normally is @ Sassafraz with empty glasses left on the table for lenghthy periods of time, not this normally wouldnt be a problem but the table for 4 was a tight squeeze on a small square table. 3 courses, drinks & coffee & less than 1.5 hours passing we were approached by a host asking if we had settled the bill. When we told him yes he immediately told us we had to leave as they had a line of people waitin for a table. SASSAFRAZ MAKE SURE YOU AVG ENOUGH TIME PER TABLE ON A SAT NIGHT & DONT OVERBOOK YOUR RESTAURANT AS IT LEFT A BAD TASTE IN ALL OF OUR MOUTHS & WE WILL NEVER BE BACK!"

The server provided exemplary service, with just the right amount of interest in the progress of our meal. We are not rushed at all, spent 3.5 hours over a leisurely meal--did I mention the food was amazing too? Will definitely go back (a little pricey to make a regular haunt, but definitely worth returning to for a special occasion)."
