Sascha's 527 Cafe is the creation of Sascha Wolhandler and Steve Suser. After more than 20 years as Baltimore's stylish boutique caterer, they have taken a charming 19th century Mt. Vernon townhouse topped with an antique crystal chandelier, dramatic 16' ceilings, warm lighting and candlelit tables and presented a look and a feel that Style Magazine has called "drop dead sexy". Sascha's menu is a comfortable blend of great flavors, both local and global. Organic and natural ingredients are used extensively to bring only the best and healthiest to the table. Small plates, called taste plates, offer a wide selection of grilled, pan seared and lightly fried foods, from bison to lobster, Mediterranean to Deep South.   • "The restaurant is right down the street from Sotto Sopra so I was hoping for the same type of quality- unfortunately not. Typically restaurant week is for trying higher end restaurants at a cheaper price. I feel like the money was not worth this food. While the food looks nice and eloquent it was cold and salty. My filet came out cold and the sides were all way too salty. Desserts were bland. Other in my party got the lamb and ahi tuna- both very salty. For the price you would expect more of a fine dining experience but I would have rather went to Outback."

  • "I town to visit our daughter we dined on the first night of restaurant week, Sunday. The menu was varied. Appetizers were good, especially the shrimp and grits; ravioli filling was delicious, the pasta was either too thick or simply underdone; beet salad was very good. Main courses were lamb shank, best of the night, filet, well cooked but potato pancake was over salted. Scallops were well cooked but the cabbage with orzo was bland and not seasoned at all and not worth eating. All three desserts were delicious, banana bourbon cake was the stand out for me but my husband preferred his carrot cake and we also had the flourless chocolate cake, thick and dense. Generally, an enjoyable meal. Apps and lamb standout."

Service was excellent and the food was delicious with reasonably sized portions. Our waitress warned us that the carrot cake that my wife and I both ordered for dessert was generous and she was quite right as we split the order between us."

  • "I went here from the recommendation of my brother. On a first date, let me just say it was everything and more. The hostess greeted me right away and was very pleasant. Our waitress was very accommodating and uber friendly! The overall place was warm and personal. Lots of art on the wall, very stimulating to the eye without being too much. The wine I had, Riesling, was excellent. I had the scallops with mushrooms and greens, the fried calamari, mussels, shrimp cesar and the cone of fries. All of which was great. The scallops especially were delightful and flavorful. For dessert we tried this banana bread pudding. Oh my word phenomenal. Wasn't too sweet, nice and warm and topped with vanilla ice cream. I highly recommend. I will return!"

  • "We read good things about Sascha's and since this was a foodcation we gave it a try. We decide to order a few small plates based on the entrees did not look too exciting. First course, a butternut soup. The taste was ok but it was too sweet for a soup. My wife feels that a key ingredient was left out. Next we had a nice Cesar salad. We liked this as it was served whole with bacon. The other items, scallops and duck con-fete were also too sweet. The night was empty we were just two of about 12 other diners. We also noticed that many light bulbs were out and dust was seen everywhere. One other thing that bothered us was the stickers located on the walls under that hanging artwork. Oh Well. A pitcher of margaritas made it a little better."

  • "Ive been to saschas a few times and I love it, but every time I go there seems to be a pattern of delicious starter plates and lackluster entrees. From now on I think I'll be ordering the taste plates only because they are to die for. And even though the deserts are not always consistent, sometimes not sweet enough or overly salty, the carrot cake and budino are still two of my favorite desserts I've gotten anywhere!"

  • "Nice wine selections. Good food. Terrible service even though the restaurant wasn't busy. Basic server/waiter skills and courtesies were not present: we had to ask for water, ask for flatware/napkin, ask them to take our order and also had to ask to take our payment which was left openly on the table for him to see. The server was oblivious and never asked how our meal was or if we needed anything."

  • "The decor and ambiance are very appealing and the wait staff are great. Cocktail list is creative but also plenty of reasonable, good wines. Mental salad is our favorate, too big for one person but split between 2 (or more) people makes an excellent starter. Shrimp and grits are divine. Pared with the salad, these 2 dishes are plenty as a complete meal, with room enough for dessert. Main courses are less exciting but are well-prepared. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience. Seems more like a neighborhood favorite you return to frequently but can also be good for a romantic date."

  • "I've been here a number of times now and the food is always very good. They were offering the regular menu and a $35 prix fixed menu. I ordered the latter with calamari, duck and the choc tart for dessert. All were delicious. What is consistent is that Sascha's always wants your experience to be good and is willing to go out of their way to make that happen. This time, they ran out of the oyster pot pie app and offered me a choice of any of their regular apps. Classy move! I also love this place for their well made cocktails. Never disappointed."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our evening out at Sascha's. The decor, featuring framed artwork on the walls and a crystal chandelier, is funky and romantic at the same time. Whle the dried cherries in my rocket salad were a bit tart for my taste, my husband enjoyed his house salad. The rockfish, served on a bed of baby spinach and quinoa with a lemon vinaigrette, was excellent, and pork ossobucco with roast onions, orange sections and rice was delicious and filling. The service was prompt and attentive (although I'm not sure why our remaining bread stick was whisked away before the entree came out). All in all, a lovely dining experience."

  • "We've been to Sascha's several times and this trip was good; it wasn't great. The food was good and enjoyable. My partner and I shared two tasting plates--the duck prosciutto salad and the red curry mussels and he had the bison slider and I, the shrimp and grits. I follow a gluten-free diet so I did not try his sliders. We were happy with the salad, which was arugula with a lovely vinaigrette, pumpkin croutons, cherries, and goat cheese. The mussels were small, but flavorful. My shrimp and grits was super tasty and the shrimp large in size and well seasoned. He enjoyed his sliders. My one complaint was the overly anxious clearing staff. He cleared a plate to my right be reaching over me while my fork was in hand more than once."

  • "I have eaten at Sascha's this experience was not good. The wait staff - only two women that I saw had too many customers to take care of effectively. The food was very good - however, the chocolate tart lacked the raspberry caramel sauce which the menu stated was part of the dessert. I mentioned this to the waitress and because she harried came across as clueless. My date ordered coffee - cream was brought, but no sugar was brought or present on the table. The restaurant is in a good location (conveniently on the way to the Lyric Theater) with parking across the street, but the whole experience was diminished from previous visits. I cannot recommend Sascha's as a dining experience which is sad - because I preferred it over Sotta Sopra's."
