A word from Sasa
Sasa is a new Japanese inspired restaurant in Walnut Creek. Izakaya Restaurants are traditional small plate restaurants where friends go to have a drink and unwind after a long day. Situated in the historic 100 year old building that for many years housed the Walnut Creek Meat Market, this architectural jewel has been transformed into a ambiance that wows and invites guests to stay and enjoy the dining experience at SASA. Chef Cyrus Irudistan and Chef/Owner Philip Yang prepare Japanese influenced dishes from around the world. The staff welcomes you into their house and offers up comfort, hospitality and fun. The restaurant includes a full bar with a large Sake selection, outdoor patio, sushi bar and a commitment to fresh local seasonal faire.

Food very good in general but the chicken skewers were dry. Sake flights were fun. If you are short do not sit at the tall tables near the bar because the chairs are too short for comfortable dining. Parking not very convenient. Adjacent metered private lot expensive, tiny and poorly marked. Nearest parking structure a bit of a walk, especially when it is 96 degrees out. I would go back again, but not any time soon, I am watching my budget.

Upon entering the restaurant, you know you're onto something really special. This isn't a sushi joint. It's like a collaboration of fresh fish, tasty small plates, and food combo paradise. Their fish is delivered daily from Tokyo's Tsukiji market & Oahu. That's pretty cool. The surroundings are warm, with deep woods and great touches of fire & water. The ambiance is fantastic. There's even a patio for outdoor dining. The food is creative, and tasty. I love the small plate concept - and they have a stunning variety of interesting offerings. My faves: - Spicy Ahi Parfait - Seared Albacore Tuna - Tempura Shrimp Lettuce Cups - Grilled Baby Back Riblets We sat in a booth/table towards the front and it was nice to be part of the bar.

Quite outstanding. Food and service were top-notch. Portions a bit small, but after all, it IS a "small plates" kinda place. Not the cheapest I've experienced, but nobody was complaining about that. But boy, is it LOUD!! Lots of groups of screaming young (mostly) females obviously enjoying the assortment of adult beverages. We might try outside next time, maybe it is a bit more restrained. But by my observation, we were far and away the most elderly patrons there, so maybe we are just getting too old. NOT!

The food is to die for. Appetizers (4 different) were perfectly prepared and seasoned. The fish entrees were outstanding, while the nigiri (salmon, hamachi and specials) were fresh and delicious. So too was the salmon role; sliced thin with delicate green onion slices and an undetermined secret ingredient. Heaven. Simply heaven.

We had made a reservation and the restaurant did not honor it, their hostess was rude. We mentioned it to the manager and he tried to make things right but the overall feeling left us all little in a funk. My reservation was for a party of six so it was difficult to maintain happiness through the group, but the food was excellent and the waiteress that brought us appetizer in their front lounge was a doll. Instead of reserving us a seat in the dining room, we were squeezed into the bar jam packed for world cup. I was with my family from the east coast and would have appreciated a seat in the dining room which is why we made the reservation in the first place. The drinks we ordered with the hostess while we were waiting didn't appear for twenty minutes. The server was sweet and attentive when she wasn't rushing around. It seemed the place was understaffed. My father and my sister are big sushi eaters, and gave the food a B-.

Gorgeous restaurant but we were not impressed. We requested a corner table due to hearing loss & received a corner table in the back room... next to a group of 20 women celebrating a birthday party. I would've heard better if I were seated in the center of the main dining room. Noone approached our table after 15 minutes of sitting so I had to ask for a server. A manager took our drink order & promptly sent a server over who took our small plate order. One plate was not what we ordered had to be sent back. We ordered 3 more small plates, 2 of which arrived at our table & 1 went to the table next to us. Thankfully I noticed & told the server. Food was decent, we liked the skewers, but no real WOW. Service is lacking & needs refining.

We cannot wait to introduce it to other friends of ours. We took a couple with us, and we all relied on the waiter's suggestions. Everything was spot on, and we all left happy and satisfied. This was our second time at Sasa, & the first time we ate at the sushi bar. You won't find a better one anywhere around.....and in a gorgeous environment.

It's all about the food in this fairly new Walnut Creek restaurant. Although the service is sincerely helpful, there are time lapses when a server cannot be found or an order was not delivered. There is nothing on this menu that disappoints-with the exception of the cold soba noodles which were really bland. The food has taken us back 4 times. However, the seating is definitely a drawback! The highback chairs and tables are most uncomfortable. The height is awkward for eating. The front room has aesthetic appeal, except for the t.v's. The back room is a disaster-cold and unappealing.

The Blue Ginko in Lafayette has been our go-to sushi place for years. So, when we heard Phil was taking the leap with a high-end place in WC, we were very excited. We have been there twice now, and our hopes have been met and exceeded. The fish is about as fresh as you can get it, and the expanded menu offers many exciting choices beyond sushi/sashimi. The atmosphere/ambiance rivals anything you'd find in SF. Great location and easy valet parking out front. A home run for Phil and the gang. We will be back many times in the future.

Sasa was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had. The staff was warm and accomodating from the moment we arrived. Our waiter was knowledgable, funny, and excellent at reading a table and meeting the customers needs. We were a table of many women, so you can imagine the constant requests. Our waiter met each one of our needs with grace and experience. I would recommend Sasa to all I know. It has something for everyone....you do not have to be a sushi lover to enjoy Sasa's menu. The menu was well thought out and reasonably priced.

The food was very tasty and the portions were generous eventhough they were "small plates" The wine seletion was good and unlike some of the newer restaurants, you received an normal portion of wine, unlike the 4 ounce glasses some of the other places are pouring at full price. We spent close to $100 but feel we got our money's worth and did not go away hungry.
