A word from Sasa
Sasa is a new Japanese inspired restaurant in Walnut Creek. Izakaya Restaurants are traditional small plate restaurants where friends go to have a drink and unwind after a long day. Situated in the historic 100 year old building that for many years housed the Walnut Creek Meat Market, this architectural jewel has been transformed into a ambiance that wows and invites guests to stay and enjoy the dining experience at SASA. Chef Cyrus Irudistan and Chef/Owner Philip Yang prepare Japanese influenced dishes from around the world. The staff welcomes you into their house and offers up comfort, hospitality and fun. The restaurant includes a full bar with a large Sake selection, outdoor patio, sushi bar and a commitment to fresh local seasonal faire.

Diner Reviews
  • "Sasa has been our go to spot to meet in Walnut Creek for some creative Japanese and Asian fusion dishes. Not sure what went wrong on Sunday when a group of us met up there for lunch, but the wheels have clearly come off this bus. Service was atrocious and they must have known it because they added the service to the bill. I have never in my life left no tip, but this time I would have done so had I been given the opportunity. Appetizers arrived at the table when one usually expects dessert. Orders appeared with no rhyme or reason. Yakitoris were all overcooked. Sashimi (while fresh and tasty) was minuscule in size and over-priced to boot. Sorry SaSa. One strike and you are out. Never again..."

  • "The food was amazeballs!!! the best prepared Scallops I have ever eaten. The service was just as good. The waitress was super knowledgeable of the menu and her recommendations were on point. I was a little disappointed that they sold out of an item that was on the "chef's specials." Otherwise, everything was great. Can't wait for the next visit."

  • "Had a wonderful experience at Sass, greatly in part due to their awesome service and delicious food. They even served us the cake I brought in!"

  • "There's stiff competition very nearby. Phone line busy for several hours, so made reservation on line. Was happy with "quiet corner" table we requested. Waitress very helpful. It was nice that she helped us request starter plates divisible by 4"

  • "Excellent quality in both food and drinks. Staff knows their menu always able to highlight something with the food or drink. Great for clients too."

  • "Highly recommend the lamb chops and the mushrooms wrapped in bacon!"

  • "The food preparation at the sushi bar was very slow. We could observe on of the "chefs" wondering around while orders were accumulating. The other chef, probably the "junior" of the two was ver busy."

  • "This was a birthday dinner for 3 of the 4 members of our party. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful and inviting from the moment that you step in the front door. Unlike most restaurants, the tables are spaced far enough apart so that you can hold a conversation without feeling that you are yelling across the table. Our server, Dale, was excellent. The food was delicious, and it was fun to share a number of small plates among the 4 of us. It is pricy, so I would reserve going there for a special occasion, or for a small bite or drink, just to enjoy the ambience."

  • "SaSa consistently delivers great food, great service, and at a pretty reasonable cost considering the quality of the experience. The only thing they need is an espresso machine for after dinner coffee drinks!"

  • "I have eaten here a number of times - mostly for lunch and for the most part have had good meals. Cannot say the same about my meal there last night. Most of the food was just ok, some was not edible. Service was spotty. When we arrived we were asked if we had a preference for seating. I said yes, we would prefer to eat on the patio. The hostess answered that there were no tables available on the patio so Im not sure what preference she was asking about! During the meal different servers kept trying to deliver stuff that we didnt order. It was not that busy - in fact in the dinning room where we were sitting there were only a few tables. Should not have been that complicated! Experience left a bad taste."

  • "This is my 4th time at Sasa's. As always the food was great. However, the service was extremely slow. The plates came out so far apart I had to ask the waiter to speed it up. I have never done this in the past. The table arrangement in the back room is terrible- too many tables crammed together where it's impossible not to bump into each other's chairs. Feels like their failed restaurant in Pittsburg, Momo's - great food terrible service"

  • "The menu changed since last dining there. No tempura cauliflower, so sad. Ordered the snap peas, should have removed the side strings as they were chewy, undigestible and had to be spit out - somewhat unsavory. Also ordered the eggplant, please remove the outer skin as it just becomes tough and bitter for how Sasa prepares it. The crispy duck and lettuse wrapped prawns were a hit, as always. The complimentary miso soup is a tad salty for my taste but my other dining companions liked it. The banana fosters was a big hit, the pots de creme not so much as it was served in a single coffee cup without the traditional pastry shell, just a cup of chocolate pudding and whipped cream - not really pots de creme."

  • "We met our friends here for dinner and they had a marvelous time. We were pleasantly surprised that Sasa has an entire gluten-free menu! This made it so easy for all of us to share a selection of small plates without worries. Two of us ordered the seared scallops as our entree and it was superb!"

  • "We were having a delicious dinner when a group of six friends came to celebrate an occasion. The noise level rose to the unpleasant range. Thankfully, after about 15 minutes, they calmed down and the noise level returned to 'pretty loud,' but not unbearable. It was cold and rainy, so we were eating indoors. In warmer weather I might try the outdoor space. Service was excellent, and they didn't rush you out, even on a busy Friday night."

  • "Hot spot but the waiter did a nice job of spacing the 6 orders for the 3 of us. All fo the items were very good. The short ribs were especially good. We had a nice assortment of skewers, appetizers, and small dishes."

  • "This was our first experience at Sasa. I made a reservation for 6 via Open Table, and received both email confirmation and a phone call that day confirming our table and the names of friends we were honoring. Two of us had a lovely lemony cocktail called London... something. (Fog?) The food was not perfect and a tad overpriced, but tasty and nicely presented. Service was flawless. Good experience overall. We will be back."

  • "I went with a friend and we had a great time. Our server was excellent, he went over & beyond to help us order. From picking which wine we wanted to the sushi and the dessert. Tuesday night is the time to go because they have plates for $10, makes it much easier on the wallet. I cannot wait to go again!"

  • "Our Waitress was great. Gave us good recommendations. The menu is great - all sort of choices. Prices are reasonable, unfortunately I had an appointment and only had 1 hr exactly for lunch and could really not enjoy our meal. I got a gift card and will definitely plan on my next visit with my daughter again!!!"

  • "My husband made reservations for my birthday and we were seated outside on the beautiful patio for a romantic dinner! We had a great bottle of wine and our server was very attentive and thoughtful, they even printed the menu with a personalized birthday message! The food was delicious and my complimentary birthday dessert was amazing! We will definitely be back to Sasa!"

  • "A great occasion for a date night or special celebration! Sasa has an atmosphere of character and uniqueness. The beer and wine were exceptional. I did not care for the ceviche as it lacked balance and the hot pepper dominated and took over the dish. Chicken pops were amazing and sushi was like sushi anywhere. The challenge was our waiter was super attentive and sweet but I had a hard time with how much he engaged in long conversation asking us too many personal questions and talking on about his life. It was too much for a couple on a date night. Overall, do try it and expect a high price point but amazing atmosphere and overall great food."

  • "Being our first time eating at Sasa, from the moment we checked in for our reservation to paying the check, this is a awesome place. What stands out in our minds is the food. The food is undeniably incredible! The enoki mushrooms wrapped in bacon had us wanting more. Then you had the pork belly thinly sliced ...a must order! My husband and I agree we would eat here again even though it is a little pricey."

  • "We were there for lunch, couldn't get the duck as that is only on the dinner menu. The cauliflower was excellent, don't pass that up. And, the tempura prawn lettuse wraps are a must have. The mixed tempura and octopus were also very good. Bill, our server (very Matthew McConnahey-like they could be brothers!), was very knowledgeable on the dishes and the preparation of each - an excellent server. Loved the farmers market roll, simple and yet tasty. The chicken skewers were very good. Will return to try more things but will go for dinner to have the duck. Only disappointment was the miso as it was too salty for my taste. Everything else was very good to excellent."

  • "We had lunch outside but were not out of sight out of mind for the waitstaff. Very attentive. We has two appetizers or small plates that were really delicious. Beet salad and vegetable tempura-yum. For entrees we had a Chirashi and a pistachio crusted fish. The ponzu on the fish was so good there was not a drop left at the end of lunch! If you are in Walnut Creek for a meal- Sasa is a don't miss!"

  • "Went here on Saturday night based on a Zagat rating. might have been a bad night but the Poke was almost a tartare the pieces were so small, the roll was 75% rice, the short ribs were dry. the best dish of the night was the broccoli with chili oil. i will not go back to this restaurant. the front area of the restaurant has a nice feel to it. we were in the back seating area near the kitchen....ambiance was not great!! The service was good."

  • "The lamb chops were very fatty with little meat, the squash dumplings were dried out and the beet salad was bland. The lettuce wraps were excellent and the pistachio crusted sea bass was great. Considering the high prices charged for the relatively small portions, everything should be outstanding."

  • "If you want ambience, make sure to be seated in the front room. When we arrived the restaurant was fairly empty, but they seated us in the back room next to the bathroom entrance. There is no ambience in the backroom and you do not get a vibe for the restaurant. We had our table changed to the front room and it was 200% better. The cocktails and wine that we ordered were very good as was our food. This was our third time to this restaurant and we look forward to going back. However, next time we will be sure to ask for the front room when we make our reservation."

  • "Sasa is a hip spot in the most urban/suburban city east of Oakland in Contra Costa County. Venue is chic, frequented by a positive energetic crowd. I have been here before on a few occasions and have always enjoyed the experience. We were seated promptly, our server was very good. I think the key for me is that the food seems to have fallen off in quality. We started with the Pork Belly, Toro & roasted vegetables. The pork belly was the best food of the evening. The Toro was abysmal. A jellied, mushy experience. Toro can be a bit fattier which all of us expected, but it was also pungent with "fish" odor. Something not typical with "fresh" fish. (this was described by the server as being of the highest possible quality available) Not!"

  • "I was very please with my experience at Sasa. I made a reservation on Monday evening, received a confirmation email as well as a confirmation call Friday morning. They offered to adjust our reservation 30 minutes earlier upon request, and even though part of our group was slightly tardy they were accommodating. I had made a note on the reservation that it was my friends birthday, and they brought a special menu for her with "Happy Birthday Lexi!" at the top. She loved this effort. Also, at the end of our dinner, our attentive waitress brought out a dessert with a candle in it. Our food was timely and delicious - the Sasa roll was amazing. It wasnt too loud to where we couldn't hear each other. Overall I'm very happy with my experience."

  • "When was the last time you were surprised by a restaurant in a good way? Fresh ingredients used in innovative preparations at a very reasonable cost without a lot of fluff or fanfare. Pork lumpia with tender and light [yes, light] pork that you could taste with the cabbage. Perfectly cooked bass with a light sauce. Cauliflower tempura cooked perfectly with a lemon aioli; I could have eaten the whole basket. And the baby egg plant should be listed as its own food group. Perhaps the best asian food we have had in a long time. Only criticisms: the chicken lollipops were not tender. And between the music and the noise from the very full bar, it was too loud."

  • "Sasa is a favorite, and we love the fresh selections that are always available. This time, I tried the albacore tuna with jalapeño, the squash dumplings, and cauliflower. All were beyond expectation! The otoro was very fresh and tender, and a wonderful choice for the sashimi lover. My dining companion was unfortunately disappointed by the chicken liver (lack of flavor), but our server immediately took ti back to the kitchen and we were refunded. I'm sure it was a one-off problem, due to the excellence of every other dish. I can't wait for my next Sasa visit!"
