A word from Sarma
Sarma is the newest venture from the team behind Oleana & Sofra. Chef Ana Sortun joins Sarma Chef/Owners Cassie Piuma, and Matt Piuma in this latest collaboration.

Sarma is a fun and funky neighborhood restaurant in the style of a Turkish Meyhane ("wine-house"). It serves casual and carefully constructed small plates (Meze), alongside a bustling craft-cocktail program. The wine list is small, and impactful, featuring only natural wines intended to compliment Chef Cassie's flavorful cuisine. Music, communal dining options, and colors abound at this new neighborhood gem!

My brother and I took our visiting parents to Sarma and we enjoyed everything we ordered -- vegetarians and carnivores alike -- and had very pleasant and attentive service from our server as well as the assisting food runners and bussers. The menu is a small plates style and we were advised to order 2 to 3 plates a person. The four of us each ordered 3 things and we had more than enough food and took home leftovers but well worth the splurge as each dish was interesting and flavorful. Beautifully decorated warm atmosphere. There is also a very large bar space but I noted that they smartly had the music playing more on the bar side so that it was not too loud for the dining area. Will go back again!

Extremely flavorful small plates in an out-of-the-way restaurant with a hip ambiance. In addition to the dishes on the menu, there are specials that get shown around (like dim sum), but they don't tell you what they might be so you do not know if they are things you might like more than what's on the menu.

Sarma was such an amazing experience. Not only was the food absolutely to die for, but the service was so great---I really love that they brought over a birthday dessert for my friend after I had put a note in the opentable notes. SO thoughtful. I would totally come back again and tell all my friends to go!! Thank you, Sarma!

We have been to Sarma many times.....the food is complex and inventive...and how the chef can develop such a varied and ever changing menu and always get it right is beyond comprehension...and beyond most chef's cooking abilities! The atmosphere is casual and friendly.. the food served "small plates" style..which makes for a great deal of variety, particularly if you go with a group. It is some of the most sophisticated food in Boston!

Eating at Sarma was a great experience! First and foremost, amazing flavor and texture combinations. If you are looking for something new and dofferent- this is it. And, our server plus the kitchen did a great job accommodating my friend's nut allergy, making adjustments wherever possible to enable us to try dishes without the usual nuts. Sarma's decor is also gorgeous and colorful. Friendly atmosphere and inter-table discussion because fellow diners were so excited about what they were eating, and wanted to ask us about our food too. Always a good sign. Try it. And, make a reservation early- it was packed on a tuesday night.

This is Oleana's sister restaurant. Whole we enjoy O, this is much better in that you can try many different plates. The selection is far greater and but for Oleana's incredible baked alaska and out door seating, we would always come here. Putting aside those differences, the spices here are extraordinary. We have been to Turkey and did not experience this range of flavors. Everytime we hesitate to try something because the ingredient does not appeal to us, boy we were wrong once we did order it. I have not yet had a dish that has failed to please. This is a best in Boston. Great for kids too as the noise level is high.

I've loved Ana Sortun and all her restaurants for years now. Oleana has been a favorite for a long time, and Sofra's breakfast samplings are perfect. Sarma captures the same essence in a smaller-plate focused setting. Smaller plates give you the opportunity to try more variety of the terrific food. Turkish cuisine focuses on spices, and each dish is spiced to perfection with flavors most pallets are not used to. This is one of the only restaurants where I would intentionally order food I don't typically like (like olives) because I know with Ana Sortun, it is very difficult to not like her food.

Service somewhere between mediocre and gruff. Most of the dishes were fair to good, but nothing really exceptional. Frequently just overly cutesy and superficial combinations (fried chicken with a bit of sesame and a tahini dipping sauce) as opposed to genuine fusion. I'd recommend the steak tartar. The venison was tender but otherwise unexceptional.

Went for my 31st birthday w/ my husband. We love Oleana so we had high expectations and were not disappointed. The pumpkin fritters and 7 layer hummus are a must! I could've eaten an entire tray of those fritters. The bastura and octopus were good, not amazing. The venison was last, which while not my favorite, my husband loved. He thought it was cooked perfectly. The waitress suggested 6 items, we ordered 5 assuming we'd get one of the passed items but nothing really grabbed us enough. We were going to order another item from the regular menu, but at that point I was comfortably full. Probably also due to the delicious bread they bring, which they graciously brought seconds of when we asked. Was a bit loud but overall a great time.

Sarma was my pick for a monthly restaurant outing with work friends. The food was excellent (really just order anything and everything---you can't miss!), and the service was friendly. We did have a problem with the split check, with one of my friends having a charge show up on her credit card that was not on her slip, but I believe it's being taken care of. There were 6 of us in our group and we got to sample about 14 different dishes. This sampling resulted in each person experimenting with unfamiliar tastes; all of them delicious. The fried chicken was succulent, and the pumpkin fritters were surprisingly spicy and so scrumptious. We were wishing that we kept a menu at the table so we would know what was in each of the dishes as they were passed around.. We'll definitely go back.

It was turned down noticeably - much more than usually happens when we make this request. Sarma is terrific in almost every dimension: food, flavors, service, ambience, cocktails, energy. The wine list, however, is the only dimension where the restaurant falls on its face; it seems to be an afterthought, with one of the most limited selections I've seen in a restaurant with this level of quality and attention to its food. If Sarma offered even a modest portion of what is available at its sister restaurant Oleana, diners would have a more reasonable set of options, but until the situation improves, the restaurant won't be as high on my "go-to" list as I wish it were!

No matter what we try (and the menu is jam-packed with new, interesting and very tasty plates), we are never disappointed. Four of us went to dinner to celebrate 2 birthdays and it was our first time at Sarma. The decor was lovely, the staff welcoming and friendly, and the meze menu was diverse. Even though we had some people with food restrictions, we found more than enough items to share. We ordered 9 plates, which was probably 2 too many for the 4 of us. We especially liked the 7 layer humus - a must try! The wine list was not impressive, and the wines were expensive for what they were. The waiter brought little candles for us to celebrate, which was lovely and festive. The only thing I would change is the chairs. Very hard chairs for leisurely dining. Ask for cushioned seating or bring a stadium cushion.

My latest experience at Sarma was quite disappointing. My previous trips to Sarma were great which is why I chose to come back for my anniversary. This is the third or fourth time I have been to the restaurant. The food this time was just all over the place. Three out of five of the dishes ordered were simply bad. The flavors of the dishes didn't make sense together, the vegetables were overcooked and limp looking and the server was terrible. I'm hoping this was just an off night, sadly they ruined what should have been a memorable evening.

We have been longstanding fans of Oleana in Cambridge, so were pleased but a little anxious to hear that Sarma, a "sister" restaurant had opened in Somerville (only anxious because we didn't see how it could live up to the quality of food at Oleana). Not to worry - we had a lovely dinner, and the plates to share gave us a chance to sample a wide variety of excellent tastes (including the roving "specials" which were among the best...) We would definitely go back again (and wonder when they will publish the first cookbook!)
