A word from Sarma
Sarma is the newest venture from the team behind Oleana & Sofra. Chef Ana Sortun joins Sarma Chef/Owners Cassie Piuma, and Matt Piuma in this latest collaboration.

Sarma is a fun and funky neighborhood restaurant in the style of a Turkish Meyhane ("wine-house"). It serves casual and carefully constructed small plates (Meze), alongside a bustling craft-cocktail program. The wine list is small, and impactful, featuring only natural wines intended to compliment Chef Cassie's flavorful cuisine. Music, communal dining options, and colors abound at this new neighborhood gem!

  • "great variety of interesting tapas featuring seasonal ingredients. good mixture of vegetarian and non-vegetarian plates, though our focus was on the vegetarian offerings of which we were very satisfied - overfilled actually from getting carried away with options. the beer list was also good with some cheap options to some high-gravity types running the gambit of styles. Desert options were basic but delicious - frozen yogurt with assorted topping choices overall we had a great time overall with the menu and the restaurant and really like the sourcing from Sienna Farms for many ingredients."

  • "On previous visit, the waitperson was extremely professional, well-trained, and attentive."

  • "After a pleasant experience at Oleana, we were told by multiple friends to check out Sarma. Best advice ever! We were greeted by a waiter who had a tray displaying their special of the night: a battered fried chicken w/ an amazing sauce! We simply said we liked it and he set one down for us. Brilliant idea! Our waitress was excellent because we told her it was our first visit and she knew exactly what to recommend. Two thumbs up to her! Everything we ordered was delightful. This included: jerky, brussels sprouts bravas, cabbage dolmades, harissa BBQ duck and lamb kofte. The bread was also very good, just make sure you don't get too full on that. Cocktails are superb! We enjoyed the Elettaria, which tasted like a Dark 'n Stormy."

  • "Crazy delicious food, friendly staff, great bar and surprisingly reasonably priced in a beautiful, casual environment. Maybe a little too successful -- hard to get a table, and the staff seems a little overwhelmed. But the food is totally worth the challenge."

  • "Food was very tasty, inventive, creative, but service and kitchen felt a little disorganized. The same special "dim sum" was brought around three times in a row, a huge wait for last ordered dish, and then one of the best dim sum, a fabulous "fried chicken" was brought at very end (bar menu). Wine menu rather limited. Chef's spouse and maitre'd couldn't have been nicer and more outgoing, showing us where to park in new lot and telling us all about how it was decorated. The setting is lovely and fun."

  • "Great food, appealing atmosphere although a little noisy. Aggressive waiter, who tried to get us to over-order and then put pressure on us to leave."

  • "Delectable food and a very friendly and knowledgeable waiter. Love the coziness and the combination of elegance and earthiness. It is a great place for a romantic meal or for a group celebration."

  • "We had a great experience. This place is basically Turkish Tapas. Roving servers offer you their specials already prepared to complement what you order from the menu. Our party of 3 had a total of 9 small plates. Dress is hipster casual. A real gem tucked into Somerville, a $30 cab ride from the center of Boston. No parking at all, so do take a cab."

  • "Sarma was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a while. We sat at the bar and received detailed, fun and attentive service. The food was all very good. My favorites were the lamb ribs and the tartare. Will definitely be returning. Wish Sarma was on twitter or instagram, took some great photos and would love to share."

  • "I am a big fan/follower of Ana Sortun and Cassie Piuma. Oleana and Sofra are two of my favorite dining spots and I was so excited for the opening of Sarma. Sarma is fun! The small plates allows the table to order a variety of different dishes and there wasn't one that wasn't loved by all. The flavors, spices and creativity of what Cassie plates and sends out to tables are wonderful! The chef specials that are brought to each table "Dim-Sum" style adds another element that is exciting, not knowing what might show up (and wondering if you have enough room left to sample it!) The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Parking was definitely easier this 2nd trip than the first, so that was a bonus. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Stopped in for a carafe of wine and a few small plates. Of note were the lamb kofte and crab and red lentil kibbeh. The sliders were a delicious and rather hearty treat and the kibbeh were light with a rich curried coconut sauce. The hot dates were good, but the Israeli hot sauce lacked any discernable kick. The tables on the back wall are cozy and suitable for a date while the communal tables offer a nice alternative for the social crowd."

  • "We found much of the food (though possibly by accident just what we ordered) to be pretty greasy and heavy. This didn't agree with us terribly well. Some more lighter fare, more vegetables, without deep frying, would be great. We hope to go back, but will certainly be choosing what we get a little more carefully based on this experience."

  • "Maybe it's because there was only 2 of us, and maybe because it was a Monday, but we were underwhelmed. We had heard rave reviews. We tried the jerky and could not really chew it. The carrot fritters were excellent. The lamb ribs were tasty but very very fatty.. big chunks of fat we had to spit out. Moroccan shrimp wrapped in lettuce leaves was good, but did not wow us. We also had brussel sprouts, which were tasty but way too crunchy for me, and sesame fried chicken which was again, too fatty and greasy. Chocolate baklava was mediocre. We wished we could have tasted more things but we were too full to go on. Going with a group would have lent itself more to the spirit of the restaurant, tasting more dishes. We may go back, but not soon."

  • "Wow. Just GO! Dazzling menu of mostly unusual (to Americans) items served with unfussy confidence by hip staff. Warm, welcoming room and great drinks. Off-the-beaten-path location makes the find that much more memorable."

  • "Ana Sortun and Team have done it again, fantastic food and bar scene! We over did it by each one in our party of four ordering 3 dishes each, but the each one was so good that we left very little on the table."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Food was a mixed bag. The dishes were innovative and some were done well, others lacked the finesse that comes with a bit more attention to detail. The fried shrimp was undercooked. To make matters worse, the service was paltry with the service staff being rude, not communicating when it took 25 minutes to get the drinks order, and generally being very unfriendly in answering questions and providing background around the dishes. The concept of meze and the actual menu itself is fairly innovative, and it can be a great experience if they address the service gaps and improve their food quality monitoring."

  • "Food is great (many dishes are fantastic, and most are at last very good). The room is a wonderful space. Sometimes the service is a bit erratic -- friendly, but a bit scattered. The "specials" that servers that bring around are great -- when/if they come! The other night we /were planning to order a bit lightly so as to able to order more "specials". 1 hr into our meal, not even one special had been brought to our area. We inquired about this, but the server told us (perhaps a little snippily) that he couldn't predict when/if they might come. So we were forced to order off the main menu -- and of course just as we had finished getting our dishes, the specials started being brought around (but we were too full to order any!)"

  • "Most of the dishes we tried (and we tried a lot of them) were delicious. It was delightful to see so many vegetarian dishes made so well, and after a month in Turkey, I love seeing a menu with so many tributes to that cuisine. Wish there were less salt in the servings and the ambient noise in the room were lower."

  • "Very good recommendations, wonderful flavors. Crowded on a Tuesday night, so make reservations to insure a table."

  • "The restaurant is another story. Service is young and eager and reasonably knowledgeable. This is clearly a younger, more laid back effort than its established sibling, Oleana. To make that demographic skew clear, the bar is about five times the size of Oleanas and there are the obligatory communal tables. The food was reasonably priced and was all good. The dishes were kind of middle eastern riffs on US comfort food, devilled eggs a staple of our mothers, (and Oleana )were great. Crab and lentil kibbeh was a middle eastern crab cake and the lamajeun wound up like a kind of Armenian taco. There was even good old fried chicken with a tasty sauce. Beer and wine by the glass was reasonably priced. Parking? Don't ask."

  • "We had to wait 4 weeks to get a table, and it was worth it! From start to finish, it was a great experience...fresh ingredients, creatively put together, exceptionally attractive presentation of each plate, special additions to the regular menu enticingly brought to each table for viewing and possibly choosing (or not)... It was a memorable evening we'll want to repeat again. There were four of us, which made it easier to try a larger number of plates and sample the many delights Sarma offers. Enjoy!"

  • "It took my girlfriend and I a month to be to get a reservation at Sarma, but it was worth the wait. Our meal was outstanding -- everything was crazy delicious. It may take a while to get a table here, but it's worth the wait."

  • "Small plates, each unique and complex but not overly elaborate. Plenty for vegetarians!! Service also outstanding. The only downside is that parking is tough to find!"

  • "Hard to get a reservation, but worth the wait. We really enjoyed our night at Sarma, though we may have overdone it a little on the food. That was pretty easy to do since everything looked (and tasted) so delicious. Our favorite find of the night was desert, though. We got an ice-cream like desert (I think it might have been made of yogurt) with several toppings. Our favorite was the honeycomb. We really wanted more of it even though we were stuffed."

  • "Sarma is a wonderful addition to the Somerville scene. Tucked away in an unexpected corner, the atmosphere within the restaurant is great. The food is absolutely delicious, the flavors are wonderful. The only downside is that it can be harder to hear people if you are in bigger groups. The ambience is really good, though!"

  • "After reading the great reviews, I decided to give Sarma a try. My expectations were greater than I what I experienced. As a woman who grew in the Middle East, I was expecting more traditional meals. I tried the grilled Octopus and to me it tasted more like a Mexican dish than a Mediterranean one. All the other plates that my husband and I shared had a modern westernized flavor and were expensive for the amount that was offered. We will not return."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Excellent food. Exciting menu. Expensive though, and busing service is a little aggressive. Drinks are way too expensive--wine pours are pitiful (slightly under 1/2 of a large glass) and mixed drink was overfilled with ice and only 2/3 filled with the drink. Leaves an impression of greediness. This is my only complaint."

  • "If you are looking for a hip, vibrant, creatively DELICIOUS neighborhood haunt, well, you've found it...ENJOY!"

  • "Sarma was good, not great. The waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. The food was average except for the Harissa duck and seven layer hummus which were excellent. The dim sum type passing of chef creations was interesting. We tried two which, again, were good, not great. The fried chicken was overdone; the salmon, though beautiful in presentation, lacked flavor. We would suggest that all small plates allow for an equal serving for four people. If necessary, raise the prices to accommodate the typical table of four. Splitting 3 hot dates between four people was not easy. Because we are especially fond of traditional Turkish food, our expectations may have been too high for Sarma. Nevertheless, it is worth trying."

  • "What a great night we had! celebrating with friends, one of whom was allergic to spicy food, we had such fun choosing our food and sharing it with each other. We were so impressed with the staff, who pulled out all the stops to make sure our allergic friend was well provided for - they recommended healthy options for him, told him what to stay away from, and let us know what they were happy to modify on his bahalf. The only down side is that we got so carried away with the fantastic food that we kept eating past the point of Stop!! But this was a happy problem that we take full respoinsibility for & will no doubt repeat again. Go for the sheer joy of eating and sharing delicious nurturing food...we did and we loved it."

  • "Anything Anna Sortun is involved with turns golden. This was our first time there. Although we had reservations for 7:30, we were not seated in the main dining room until 7:55. We did not want the uncomfortable, noisy hi-tops in the back. Food there is all small plates. Ordered 3 plates each for the 4 of us, which was suggested, and ended up grabbing two more from the random dishes that circulate randomly. This was too much food, but we finished everything. Everything was great, although there are some standouts. Each plate is quite complex, so, to me, it was similar to a high-quality tasting menu. Will definitely go there again, but so hard to get timely reservations."

  • "We chose and shared several small plates, all vegetarian, and each one was a discovery of wonderful and well-blended flavors. The food here is "eyes roll back in your head" terrific and I will be returning with a carnivore companion to try out the rest of the menu."

  • "Sarma has a superlative menu of eastern Mediterranean small dishes. Full disclosure: this is my favorite kind of food! We ordered five dishes for two people; every dish we ordered was terrific and it was ample food. The scallops were a particular knockout. Many vegetarian choices. It was busy on a Tuesday night; we had a reservation at 5:45 and it was pretty full by 6:30. A casual atmosphere with some beautiful accents from Turkey. As I ate, I started to think about what occasion I had to come again."

  • "Loved the ambiance with the beautiful blue glass chandeliers. Tried a number of different mezze with great success. We will need multiple return trips to work our way through the menu."

  • "Awesome, fantastic! Some of the best and creative Turkish mezzes i have ever eaten - compares extremely favorably with some of our best dining experiences when we visited Turkey. Lively atmosphere, prompt service and food to die for ! What more could a serious foodie like me ask for."

  • "Great fun for a group that wants to taste it all! I told the server of my gluten allergy and he came back with a nice list of safe dishes. We ended up ordering about 9 of them for the table and for the first time in a while I could try nearly everything coming out!!"

  • "Our trek to Sarma( in the middle of nowhere in Somerville) was a mission to experience good food in a nice atmosphere for my birthday. Over a week we waited for a reservation, only to get there and find zero parking, a loud prominent bar, and a host that reminded us that a party of two was coming in right after us. Our server was average at best. The food was tasty but interrupted by servers coming over with "specials" on a tray, most of which were fried. The dessert menu had very few choices and the food came at us at a rapid fire pace. There was no time to sit and relax between dishes."
