A word from Sarma
Sarma is the newest venture from the team behind Oleana & Sofra. Chef Ana Sortun joins Sarma Chef/Owners Cassie Piuma, and Matt Piuma in this latest collaboration.

Sarma is a fun and funky neighborhood restaurant in the style of a Turkish Meyhane ("wine-house"). It serves casual and carefully constructed small plates (Meze), alongside a bustling craft-cocktail program. The wine list is small, and impactful, featuring only natural wines intended to compliment Chef Cassie's flavorful cuisine. Music, communal dining options, and colors abound at this new neighborhood gem!

Diner Reviews
  • "Its hard to get a table for four or six people at Sarma but two seems relatively straightforward--we got a table at 7:45 late the same afternoon and were seated at 7:30 in the back of the room behind the large communal table. The waiter was good--attentive and never forgot we were there. The servers who brought the food or bussed the table were uniformly lovely and seemed proud of the food and happy to be there. We had seven small plates--the absolute standout was the "blue fish falafel" which was a fried fish fritter served like falafel with one perfect pickled peach. I'm planning to try pickling peaches myself this week in hommage. Shrimp Saganaki was the only exception: dull and only three shrimp. No room for dessert."

  • "Our host Andy was spectacular! A shining star who was welcoming, friendly and appreciative of our business. The food was OUT OF THIS WORLD! The top 3 everyone should try: • Carrot Fritters • 7-Layer Hummus • Corn Cakes All spectacular!! Service was a different story. The entire staff was wonderful EXCEPT our primary waiter. He wasn't very attentive to our table of 3, but practically hovered over a larger table next to the back wall. It took him a very long time to come back and take our initial order, and it never got better. What could have been a 5-Star experience was tarnished by our waiter!"

  • "My husband and I made our second visit to Sarma on Sunday. The food tasted even better than our first visit. We did experience three instances where the wrong dishes were brought either to our table or to someone else's table. At the end of the meal, the manage came over and apologized and took some items off of our bill. His sincere apology more than made up for the mix ups. We love this restaurant and plan to come again and again."

  • "They've got what you want at Sarma and they know it. Our party of 3 was warned by the hostess on arrival for a very early Saturday reservation "this table needs to turn by 8." We were out in plenty of time and our waitress , to her credit, did not rush us. Don't let your success go to your head Sarma--service begins at your difficult to find door."

  • "We loved our first dinner at Sarma. The food is off the beaten track, Middle-eastern/Near-eastern/Mediterranean Rim, in keeping with its sister restaurant Oleana, one of our favorites. The small dishes were indeed easy to share and provided a lot of variety. We had some favorites, but there wasn't any dish we didn't love. It's noisy, a drawback for us elders, but lively and fun. The service is friendly and paced right. All in all a wonderful dining experience with friends. We'll be back often."

  • "Third time here and the food was again outstanding. This is the second time that we introduced a friend to Sarma. This time we had dessert and the frozen yogurt with a pick of various toppings was a delight. A great way to finish the evening and clear our palettes."

  • "Sarma was amazing. The food was absolutely delish - every plate packed a punch of flavors. The broccoli was incredible and some of the best I've ever had! Plan to come back."

  • "We had a good dinner but felt little less personal. It's good to think about educating the servers little more. All Ann's restaurants has same problem. No one is full of energy. But we love her food and cooking. So will go back."

  • "Really tasty food and drinks. Would definitely go back and sit at the bar again. Fried chicken was amazing as were the corn pancakes and the sugar snap peas. Wine was awesome. Bartenders were funny and friendly but not imposing."

  • "This is a great spot. I had been to oleana and enjoyed my dinners there, so I thought I'd give Sarma a try. Overall, the food was great. They have the small plates similar to oleana and additionally have specials that they bring around like dim sum. I will definitely go back."

  • "Sarma continues to impress. The summer menu is fantastic. We loved the 7 layer hummus, pork ribs, carrots, yogurt cheese with figs, & cheese pastry with beet salad. The only dish that was not enjoyable was the lamb shish which was both very rare & tough. It is frustrating that each time we dine here even though we request to not receive meat dishes separately from veggie dishes since only one member of our party eats meat we often get meat dishes with a long delay before veggie dishes. It would be nice if the kitchen could help with these requests instead of only bringing out "batches" to several tables at once. This is awkward when only one person is eating the dish. The frozen yogurt is always delicious."

  • "Perhaps - to compensate for the silence of people alone together with their gadgets? - restaurants feel obligated to provide a high level of noise. Note this review form - "energetic" is the highest noise level. Does that mean you want to jump up and run out of the place? Sarma is that noisy - at least it was on a Wednesday night at 7:30 pm. My voice was shot for 2 days. The food was interesting, fun, etc., but expensive, very rich (lots of oil, fried, soaked, grilled), and because the wait staff are pushing "specials" for you to purchase while your menu food is arriving as it is cooked - hard to keep track of what you're eating. I remember delicious carrot fritters because that's the first thing I had. No way do I go back."

  • "My husband and I have now been to Sarma several times and we haven't been disappointed yet! Every dish we've tried (with the exception of maybe one or two) has been outstanding - creative dishes with great flavors, and the menu is always changing which keeps things interesting. Though it can be hard to get a reservation, we've had great luck with just going in and getting a seat at the bar, or offering to wait for a table and not waiting more than 10-15 minutes. The cocktails are also very good."

  • "Overall I enjoyed the flavors of the dishes. The service was generally good, there are no specials however they do an odd dim sum type service by offering dishes table side that are already on the menu and the wait staff is unaware of what these dishes are in advance. I found it mildly annoying to be disrupted and offered something I could have chosen from the menu. My favorite items were the squid saganaki, grilled broccoli farro salad with spicy feta sauce, persian beef and swiss chard rolls and the frozen greek yogurt with lime curd and blackberries with a turkish coffee. The flavor of the lamb souvlakia was great but the meat was too chewy and the haloumi fries were bland but the fig ketchup was interesting. Beware parking is tough."

  • "The food is awesome at sarma. My favorite are those little pork buns which just melt in your mouth. Portions are small so you've got to count at least 3 plates/person. The price is on par with the quality. Count on at least $40/person with a drink. It is probably best to go as a small group of 4-6 people. That allows to try out a large fraction of the offerings. I am very noise sensitive and I cannot think of a single restaurant I have been to in the US that doesn't feel noisy to me but this is not pub level noise."

  • "The variety of selections and the preparation of the small plates is unlike anything else in the area . Sarma provides unique and delicious food and wine. It is clear to see why it is so popular. I can't wait to go back."

  • "A dissappointment, especially because the sister restaurants, Oleana and Sofra, are so fantastic! The real standouts were the 7 layer hummus and the delicious house-made frozen yogurt dessertwith awesome toppings (brandied cherries and halvah caramel)."

  • "This place has really great reviews on Yelp, and living in Somerville, I had wanted to try Sarma out. However, despite having an 8:45 pm reservation, we weren't seated until 9:15 (at the earliest). In the interim, the host kept encouraging us to go to the bar where there was one seat, and it was extremely crowded. So, I guess we were supposed to sit and have expensive cocktails instead of being seated. Ten minutes, ok, no problem, but 30 minutes when you have a reservation? Perhaps at that point you should be offering your patrons a drink on the house. As for the food, it's reasonably good but quite heavy."

  • "Tasty and imaginative food. Our waitress said some totally inappropriate things. We brushed it off but could have been really offensive or upsetting to some. Also, the dim sum passed mezes are a nice idea but the waiter kept saying you might not see this again so you should take it if you're interested. Since there were only 3-4 dishes on the tray this was pretty apparent. When we wanted one of these specials, we hadn't ordered yet so we couldn't get one. When we didn't want it, the waiter was really pushy."

  • "We had been looking forward to trying Sarma, reservations are booked further out so a little planning is necessary but worth the effort. Nice space, definitely not a quiet room but not overwhelming, you can carry on a conversation. Our waitress recommended 2-3 plates per person which was accurate for us (we were hungry), we ended up over doing it slightly, taking advantage of nightly specials that are brought to your table. We fell for two of the specials so ended up taking some of our initial order home with us. As a sister location Sarma does share some of the dining experience that Oleana provides, we enjoyed Sarma more than Oleana. That isn't so much a strike against Oleana as a boost for Sarma, we enjoyed the menu a lot."

  • "Really loved the small plate idea - also like the idea of testing some of the specials although I suggest management offer an occasional 'taste' sized sample at no charge so that patrons can try out something they may not ordinarily order. Pork Belly Bunuelo, Squid Saganaki, Haloumi Fries, sugar snaps, wild salmon, all excellent. Not cheap, but not outrageous. May try eating at the bar next time which seemed a fun option."

  • "A truly outstanding meal. We had so many small plates that I can't list them all. But out of 16 or 20 or so there was only one bad one (the shrimp/vermicelli/lettuce is really dull and uninspired). Everything else was standout, leaving us asking how it was done. Highly recommended: carrot fritters, stuffed hot dates, duck barbecue, lamb sliders, peapods in tahini, hot bread, asparagus and egg--I can't even remember them all. But all were spectacular. We will definitely go back. In contrast to Oleana the service was excellent--warm, welcoming, thoughtful. They could have a better beer and wine list."

  • "This was our first time at Sarma, we have been to Oleana a number of times and love that so I figured we'd try it. Other than finding parking in this Sommerville neighborhood, the experience was great. Apart from the set menu, there are nightly specials that each of the staff comes around with and gives descriptions of. Everything was excellent, it was hard for me to pick just one favorite from all the many things we tried."

  • "This was our 4th or 5th visit to Sarma and we took our children & grandson who were here from LA. Our experience was exceptional, as always. It's really nice to be able to depend on a place for food, ambiance and service and at Sarma we can. We were happy to share the place with our family, who were equally impressed. Our mixed group of meat eaters and vegetarians were all able to find good, inventive and surprising food choices, and our family said they would definitely return when they're next in town. Worth trying: the fatoush, carrot fritters, fried shrimp, pork sliders, fried chicken -- there's much more to recommend; the menu is really a trip. Also excellent: the drink Old Soul, Sarma's version of an Old Fashioned."

  • "We ate only vegetarian dishes and found numerous delicious selections, even with accommodation for a gluten allergy. Every single one of the tapas we ordered was a '10', thoroughly full of flavor, the spicing and ingredient combination being one of Sarma's top strengths. Cocktails exquisite too. Cannot wait to return."

  • "I was there for a special occasion dinner, and at first arrival appetizers came out fast and were outstanding. Not sure what went wrong in the kitchen or maybe the rest of the order was deleted because another 45 min went by and still no entree, and they were not dishes requiring extra time in my mind. Servers only checked on us after we noted the delay, they were friendly and apologetic but at long last we had to leave before trying the entree. I would go back though, in hopes it was not typical there. Food i had really was fantastic"

  • "What a fabulous find! The food is unlike any we have had before. The food is middle eastern, Turkish and Moroccan. It isn't hot spicy, just so unique and flavorful. It is a treat for your palate. There are all small plates, plus 6 to 8 "specials" that are offered throughout the evening. You have the option to add them or not. We urge you to try at least a few. The plates are enough for 3 diners to sample. There were three of us and we ordered 8 plates and added 3 or 4 of the specials and we were more than satisfied. The Turkish coffee and ricotta doughnut are the perfect finish to the meal. If you like to sample, it can become a pretty pricey dinner quickly, but well worth it. Parking=limited/can be pricey. YUM!"

  • "Perfect blend of casual ambiance, unique and wonderful food - love that you can order off the menu but can also await surprises that come out of the kitchen. Makes for a really fun evening. We had excellent service from Lily who was as lovely as could be. Had a stressful day prior to arriving and she encouraged me to tell her what I was craving cocktail wise and she had the mixologists come up with something for me and it was perfect. Lovely way to start a memorable meal. Loved it."

  • "Had read many favorable reviews, both by readers and in the Boston Globe. We are very fond of the tapas, small-bite menu, but were not familiar with Turkish food. We found the selections intriguing and very pleasant, if not outstanding. The wine list seems a bit over priced to me and the glasses were rather skimpily filled. It is a family style ambience, not overly noisy and I can say that we were happy to have had the experience."

  • "Sarma had come highly recommended to us. It is truly a diamond in the rough, a neighborhood gem. We enjoyed the uniqueness of all of the dishes which had flavorful combinations. We were really looking forward to the fried chicken chef special that we heard so much about, but it wasn't being served that evening (we recommend that it become a permanent part of the menu)! We enjoyed the Fatoush and scallops. Our biggest complaint was that we specifically asked if we should order our dishes in stages. Our server assured us that the chef would pace the delivery. We were so disappointed when virtually our entire meal was served at once. It was beyond disappointing. We will go back, but will order in stages next time."

  • "I have been 3 times and each time the noise has made conversation challenging. It does not seem to be a matter if great concern to the management since all else is so successful. We will come earlier next time. Also, 3 plates per person can be too much if there are 4 people."

  • "This is a fun spot. It's not on the way to anywhere (okay, maybe that's a Boston-centric remark) but is worth a trip. The restaurant suggests you order 3 plates/person. We were a party of 5 and I think we ordered 10 or 11 things altogether and that seemed about right. The keftedes were excellent as were the artichokes. The lamb sliders were beautifully cooked, which is not always the case as other places."

  • "Made 5:45 pm reservation for Sunday. The Friday before, I had another friend that wanted to join us. I called Sarma but told that they could not accommodate and would call if they could. They never did. So, no friend. Sarma was half empty upon arrival and remained so throughout our meal. Not only that but with many more pleasant options available they seated us at a dark little table right beside the entrance to the bathrooms. I protested to no avail. Couldn't even read the menu. The wine by the glass menu is quite limited, the food was quite good, but the promised specials never appeared. Won't be going back any time soon. For good Turkish food, check out Istanbul'u in Teele Square."
