A word from Sarma
Sarma is the newest venture from the team behind Oleana & Sofra. Chef Ana Sortun joins Sarma Chef/Owners Cassie Piuma, and Matt Piuma in this latest collaboration.

Sarma is a fun and funky neighborhood restaurant in the style of a Turkish Meyhane ("wine-house"). It serves casual and carefully constructed small plates (Meze), alongside a bustling craft-cocktail program. The wine list is small, and impactful, featuring only natural wines intended to compliment Chef Cassie's flavorful cuisine. Music, communal dining options, and colors abound at this new neighborhood gem!

Diner Reviews
  • "A dissappointment, especially because the sister restaurants, Oleana and Sofra, are so fantastic! The real standouts were the 7 layer hummus and the delicious house-made frozen yogurt dessertwith awesome toppings (brandied cherries and halvah caramel)."

  • "Among my all-time favorite restaurants. For me, it doesn't get any better than Sarma."

  • "Really loved the small plate idea - also like the idea of testing some of the specials although I suggest management offer an occasional 'taste' sized sample at no charge so that patrons can try out something they may not ordinarily order. Pork Belly Bunuelo, Squid Saganaki, Haloumi Fries, sugar snaps, wild salmon, all excellent. Not cheap, but not outrageous. May try eating at the bar next time which seemed a fun option."

  • "We had been looking forward to trying Sarma, reservations are booked further out so a little planning is necessary but worth the effort. Nice space, definitely not a quiet room but not overwhelming, you can carry on a conversation. Our waitress recommended 2-3 plates per person which was accurate for us (we were hungry), we ended up over doing it slightly, taking advantage of nightly specials that are brought to your table. We fell for two of the specials so ended up taking some of our initial order home with us. As a sister location Sarma does share some of the dining experience that Oleana provides, we enjoyed Sarma more than Oleana. That isn't so much a strike against Oleana as a boost for Sarma, we enjoyed the menu a lot."

  • "Tasty and imaginative food. Our waitress said some totally inappropriate things. We brushed it off but could have been really offensive or upsetting to some. Also, the dim sum passed mezes are a nice idea but the waiter kept saying you might not see this again so you should take it if you're interested. Since there were only 3-4 dishes on the tray this was pretty apparent. When we wanted one of these specials, we hadn't ordered yet so we couldn't get one. When we didn't want it, the waiter was really pushy."

  • "A truly outstanding meal. We had so many small plates that I can't list them all. But out of 16 or 20 or so there was only one bad one (the shrimp/vermicelli/lettuce is really dull and uninspired). Everything else was standout, leaving us asking how it was done. Highly recommended: carrot fritters, stuffed hot dates, duck barbecue, lamb sliders, peapods in tahini, hot bread, asparagus and egg--I can't even remember them all. But all were spectacular. We will definitely go back. In contrast to Oleana the service was excellent--warm, welcoming, thoughtful. They could have a better beer and wine list."

  • "This was our first time at Sarma, we have been to Oleana a number of times and love that so I figured we'd try it. Other than finding parking in this Sommerville neighborhood, the experience was great. Apart from the set menu, there are nightly specials that each of the staff comes around with and gives descriptions of. Everything was excellent, it was hard for me to pick just one favorite from all the many things we tried."

  • "This was our 4th or 5th visit to Sarma and we took our children & grandson who were here from LA. Our experience was exceptional, as always. It's really nice to be able to depend on a place for food, ambiance and service and at Sarma we can. We were happy to share the place with our family, who were equally impressed. Our mixed group of meat eaters and vegetarians were all able to find good, inventive and surprising food choices, and our family said they would definitely return when they're next in town. Worth trying: the fatoush, carrot fritters, fried shrimp, pork sliders, fried chicken -- there's much more to recommend; the menu is really a trip. Also excellent: the drink Old Soul, Sarma's version of an Old Fashioned."

  • "Loved Oleana, wasn't surprised to love Sarma. Recommend the Pugilist cocktail, and grabbing the sesame fried chicken if it is one of the specials of the evening!"

  • "We ate only vegetarian dishes and found numerous delicious selections, even with accommodation for a gluten allergy. Every single one of the tapas we ordered was a '10', thoroughly full of flavor, the spicing and ingredient combination being one of Sarma's top strengths. Cocktails exquisite too. Cannot wait to return."

  • "Exceptionally interesting, we'll-prepared food that just keeps coming! great service. Only negative was the noise level that made it sometimes hard to hear each other..."

  • "I was there for a special occasion dinner, and at first arrival appetizers came out fast and were outstanding. Not sure what went wrong in the kitchen or maybe the rest of the order was deleted because another 45 min went by and still no entree, and they were not dishes requiring extra time in my mind. Servers only checked on us after we noted the delay, they were friendly and apologetic but at long last we had to leave before trying the entree. I would go back though, in hopes it was not typical there. Food i had really was fantastic"

  • "What a fabulous find! The food is unlike any we have had before. The food is middle eastern, Turkish and Moroccan. It isn't hot spicy, just so unique and flavorful. It is a treat for your palate. There are all small plates, plus 6 to 8 "specials" that are offered throughout the evening. You have the option to add them or not. We urge you to try at least a few. The plates are enough for 3 diners to sample. There were three of us and we ordered 8 plates and added 3 or 4 of the specials and we were more than satisfied. The Turkish coffee and ricotta doughnut are the perfect finish to the meal. If you like to sample, it can become a pretty pricey dinner quickly, but well worth it. Parking=limited/can be pricey. YUM!"

  • "Perfect blend of casual ambiance, unique and wonderful food - love that you can order off the menu but can also await surprises that come out of the kitchen. Makes for a really fun evening. We had excellent service from Lily who was as lovely as could be. Had a stressful day prior to arriving and she encouraged me to tell her what I was craving cocktail wise and she had the mixologists come up with something for me and it was perfect. Lovely way to start a memorable meal. Loved it."

  • "Every bite was scrumptious. I could live here. Pork belly bunuelos would be worth crawling on your hands and knees to obtain. Service was just right - not too much, not too little attention."

  • "Had read many favorable reviews, both by readers and in the Boston Globe. We are very fond of the tapas, small-bite menu, but were not familiar with Turkish food. We found the selections intriguing and very pleasant, if not outstanding. The wine list seems a bit over priced to me and the glasses were rather skimpily filled. It is a family style ambience, not overly noisy and I can say that we were happy to have had the experience."

  • "Sarma had come highly recommended to us. It is truly a diamond in the rough, a neighborhood gem. We enjoyed the uniqueness of all of the dishes which had flavorful combinations. We were really looking forward to the fried chicken chef special that we heard so much about, but it wasn't being served that evening (we recommend that it become a permanent part of the menu)! We enjoyed the Fatoush and scallops. Our biggest complaint was that we specifically asked if we should order our dishes in stages. Our server assured us that the chef would pace the delivery. We were so disappointed when virtually our entire meal was served at once. It was beyond disappointing. We will go back, but will order in stages next time."

  • "I have been 3 times and each time the noise has made conversation challenging. It does not seem to be a matter if great concern to the management since all else is so successful. We will come earlier next time. Also, 3 plates per person can be too much if there are 4 people."

  • "Had the hot dates, octopus, and donuts. All were delicious!! And the waitress was very friendly and helpful. I'd go back if I lived closer."

  • "This is a fun spot. It's not on the way to anywhere (okay, maybe that's a Boston-centric remark) but is worth a trip. The restaurant suggests you order 3 plates/person. We were a party of 5 and I think we ordered 10 or 11 things altogether and that seemed about right. The keftedes were excellent as were the artichokes. The lamb sliders were beautifully cooked, which is not always the case as other places."

  • "Made 5:45 pm reservation for Sunday. The Friday before, I had another friend that wanted to join us. I called Sarma but told that they could not accommodate and would call if they could. They never did. So, no friend. Sarma was half empty upon arrival and remained so throughout our meal. Not only that but with many more pleasant options available they seated us at a dark little table right beside the entrance to the bathrooms. I protested to no avail. Couldn't even read the menu. The wine by the glass menu is quite limited, the food was quite good, but the promised specials never appeared. Won't be going back any time soon. For good Turkish food, check out Istanbul'u in Teele Square."

  • "Sarma beats Toro (still one of favorites) hands down. The flavored are intense and the dishes almost always work. Who would have thought asparagus and egg would be delicious or beet and root stew would be satisfying. Try the Grilled shrimp, the humus, hot peppers and you will not be disappointed. While the food is Turkish the style is tapas. Fabulous!"

  • "It may feel as if it's in the middle of nowhere, but it's worth going out of your way for the fabulous food at Sarma. Every dish we had (we had 12 small plates) was exquisite."

  • "It's rare to find such an exceptional restaurant that even weeks later, one still waxes poetic about the flavors. This restaurant, which has been written up in probably all local papers, is very likely the best restaurant in the area."

  • "The flavor combinations were superb. We had asparagus with the ketaifi-covered egg, the duck, pork belly sliders, baby artichokes, Morroccan fried shrimp, grilled octopus, Turkish black kale and stuffed figs (the last two were specials, not on the menu). All of the food was delectable. We drank a Lebanese red to accompany it, which was decent."

  • "The food is excellent. Small plates, so you can order 2 or 3 per person. My only issue is that the food comes out too fast. You are not through one plate, and another is put on the table. Not a problem if it is a cold dish, but the warm dishes tend to get a little cool. Spices are incredible. Flavors you would never think of combining. Price is right."

  • "My husband and I went to Sarma for his birthday. Everything was amazing. I don't like greasy food, and there were plenty of dishes that were fresh and clean. Drinks were great too. Service was unbelievable. Parking was a bit tough, however the staff at the front were extremely helpful when I called regarding places to park. We had to circle the neighborhood for 30 minutes before we found street parking. Wish they had Valet. I would go there again for sure."

  • "This was my second time at Sarma. I brought two people who hadn't been there before because I loved it the first time. I still love the food, cocktails and ambiance. However, this time we only were passed one of their "dim sum" like options and it was a meat dish and I don't eat meat. I specifically saved room so was hungry. When I pointed this out, we were eventually shown one more dish - another meat dish. We ended up getting dessert instead. But it was expensive - at 2 small plates per person, one shared dessert and I think one drink per person - we spent about $160 for 3 of us. Also, one of my friends spent a lot of time looking for parking only to be told that there was an unmarked (so "insider") parking lot available."

  • "Interesting menu. Especially liked having choices of 'specials' that are brought out periodically"

  • "Sarma is a must try. The variety of dishes offered caters to both the adventurous eater and also those who are vegetarian - which I am not. We especially liked the fact that they also offered "dim sum" like plates in which the kitchen would make items not on the menu and would offer it to guests if they wanted to try it. Definitely would recommend going with a party of 4-6 in order to order many small plates and try a variety of options. Wine list had some great options at very reasonable prices. Service was great, never felt rushed. Looking forward to returning again once the menu switched up again since our group basically ordered two-thrds of the menu. Parking can be a little difficult in the area."

  • "Food was great -- so many interesting choices made it hard to choose, but we settled on a array of delicious small plates that included harissa duck skewers, lamb sliders, a very different greek salad, and a seven-layer hummus dip. All were fantastic. One thing we ordered was a disappointment -- haloumi fries. These mimicked bland mozzerella sticks, rather than showcasing the signature haloumi delight of crunchy outside and gooey inside. We will definitely go again and recommend it to anyone with a sense of culinary adventure."

  • "Not a vegetarian, but prefer to eat vegetarian when I can. I know everyone raves about the baby artichokes—and they were terrific—but, everyone at our table was blown away by the carrot fritters. We ordered another round."

  • "The food is outstanding - hands down - the parking is a challenge; the noise is high. The wait staff friendly but the food delivery was too slow. We ordered the recommended number of dishes for a table of four. the portions are small and came out too piece meal. Every time part of our order came, we consumed it in one bite and then had to wait and wait and wait. We were told we would have the opportunity to try different dishes that came around for perusal, and only one showed up. It was too disorganized. We loved the food, but doubt we would ever come back. Our server did not check back with us until she felt it was time for us to order another drink. "

  • "They totally nailed the perfect combination of lively environment with delicious, interesting food. It is a little out of the way but worth the trip. You can definitely pick up on the Oleana influences with the layers of flavor and presentation of the food. I love that they have floating specials a la dim sum style. The wine list is perfectly curated to match the menu."

  • "What a menu! The Carrot Fritter was to die for as was the Kunefe (beets, a honey concoction and pistachios). We asked our waitress for a Bobby Burns cocktail, described it to her, and the bartender, never having made it before, created one of the best we've had! The decor is interesting and inviting and there was no sense of hurry, just what we wanted on a Friday night. Go!"

  • "It was delicious! Every morsel. Like nothing I've ever had before at a Middle Eastern restaurant. E.g., hummus was "seven-layer hummus," a complicated, fantastic dish of many flavors and textures. And I love the way they bring things to the table as they're ready, randomly. Also someone comes to offer "specials," a la dim sum manner. The only trouble was, I mean "morsel." Small plates. Okay, fine. But difficult to share.(We were a table of four.) E.g., Lamb souvlaki and grilled octopus on sticks were hard to remove without putting the entire thing on your plate. I'd like to go back and not "share." Dessert was phenomenal goat-milk yogurt with topping. Small wine selection, good and fairly inexpensive. "
