Diner Reviews
  • "Sadly, I feel like our dinner on Tuesday was over priced and that the server did not clearly state that the special was nearly $100 per person. For the price the meal was not worth it at all. Sad, as I used to enjoy Sargasso's."

  • "You won't be disappointed. I have always had a great meal here. The iceburg salad is fantastic. For entre, I had the ribeye steak which was very flavorful and moist. My girlfriend got the pear roasted chicken, which was simply excellent. And the cheesecake is excellent. Only issues: their espresso is more like an Americano, and you really need to block off 2-3 hours for a meal. They are simply in no rush."

  • "I come to Morgantown 4-5 times a year and this is always a "must stop" place for dinner. Great options and a very innovative menu. We've booked the private room in the back for a family event-- service and food were terrific."

  • "Great place for a relaxing evening of good food, wine and company. Service and food were excellent. "

  • "This was our first experience at Sargasso in Morgantown, and hopefully not our last. The service was wonderful...attentive without being overbearing. I liked the new concept they're trying - giving out the menu for each course after finishing the course before. The waiter we had was enthusiastic, knew the menu & specials & was very helpful with our decision-making. The wine list was great, but I ended up with a signature cocktail that I loved. The food was fantastic! Unique but recognizable...and so flavorful. The reason for the 4 stars is that my entrée was not as hot as I would have liked but still very warm. The husband entrée' was piping hot though! Cannot wait to try this place again! Do yourself a favor~check it out!"

  • "We have been visiting and dining in morgantown for 4 years while our son attended wvu. We have never dined at a restaurant like this before. It was absolutely wonderful and the food was delicious. We could never come up with any restaurant worth going back to when visting but Sargassos is a keeper! Best of luck!"

  • "We were in Morgantown for WVU Graduation. It was a last minute decision to have a family dinner but we were able to get reservations with less than 24 hr notice. We were all pleased with the food and the service. It was a very enjoyable evening."

  • "May contains two special days for my wife & me: our wedding anniversary & Mother's Day, my wife's first Mother's Day. So I had to do something really special. Sargasso was the perfect place. The food, the service & the experience was top notch. One key factor is no one tried to upsell us on wine. We asked for a recommendation for a Malbec. It was delicious, and not the most expensive. Looking forward to our next dinner at Sargasso. "

  • "A special occasion; the graduation from WVU of my younger son, brought us to Sargasso from N.J. The service from our waiter was exceptional, the wine selection was extensive and varied, the food was very good, however expensive. Sargasso is comparable to a fine N.Y.C. restaurant. As I wrote, it is expensive but after all, this was a special event. How many time does a son graduate from college, especially with honors?"

  • "The fanciest restaurant I have been to in Morgantown. It doesn't look much from the outside, but is gorgeous on the inside. Amazing romantic ambiance with the largest drink list I've ever seen. Options for everyone. The food was delicious. The portions are small, but still filling. A pricier meal than most places in Morgantown, but it was great for a romantic celebration. Great for a party that loves to drink wine as the selection was extremely large. The calamari was outstanding and different than any other calamari I've ever had. "

  • "Sargasso is a beautiful restaurant with delicious food options. It was quite a treat to travel to West Virginia and discover this gem of a place. I travel to WV for work and I make sure I stop in on every trip. I was happy to introduce my coworkers to this spot."

  • "I have waited to digest my review of Sargasso's. Let me start with the positives by saying the ambience is good with low lighting, the view is a river or parking lot. Our service was wonderful and noise level low. All in all a romantic spot. My husband and I ordered the suggested appetizer and entrees. Mine swordfish which was fine and my husband ordered the Kobe beef. His was paper thin and fatty around the edge. It was delicious and melted in your mouth!!! The OUCH came to play when we got our bill. The Kobe beef entree was $141.00!!! This is fine and dandy if we had been told when our server was describing the special that it is billed by the ounce and there could not have been more than 2. Lesson learned ask questions!!!"

  • "Huge disappointment. Huge bill. There are far better places to dine in Morgantown."

  • "I had the Kobe Waygu Strip Special recommended by my server. The best steak I have ever had. Excellent all around."

  • "Traveled to Morgantown for the first time. While the town was not impressive, Sargasso offered great food, artistically displayed, and wonderful service. The menu selections were sufficient. Dessert was excellent. Wine list a bit overpriced. I would definitely dine there again, if my travels brought me close to the area."

  • "Please read and ask questions about menu items. i did not. Ordered Wagu Steak so I thought. It was $35 Pot Roast like you get at Bob Evans for $6.95. Who would chop Wagu Steak up and simmer in Crock Pot? My mistake. Lesson learned."

  • "We travel a lot and have the opportunity to dine in great restaurants. Sargasso is as good as any Pittsburgh restaurant and as good as many in NYC! Impressive! Wonderful sargasso salad and the wedge salad was great! We love our entrees of lamb chops, salmon and halibut. We will be back and recommend to friends."

  • "I was disappointed in the overall quality of the ambiance, service and food preparation and in some cased the items that were served did not seam to fit the description on the menu. The service was perfunctory and it was confusing as they switched waiters on us mid-course. Bottom line, for the price, the quality, ambiance and service was very much below par and I would not recommend this restaurant to any one on the basis of this experience."

  • "We made online reservations for Sargasso in Morgantown, WV. We went on Valentine's Day for lunch. I felt the menu for lunch was very nice. I am a picky eater, and I was able to find at least 3 items I would eat. We were a little disappointed in the fact that there was not a children's menu (our daughter is 7 and joined us for lunch) BUT the waiter suggested a specialty pizza (cheese) and our daughter was excited to get a special item. The food was DELICIOUS. Everyone tried everything and we all greatly enjoyed our food and dessert. Like the food, the service was wonderful. Our waiter was very attentive to us even though he had a huge party that he was serving as well. We were so impressed with him we left a 25% tip!"

  • "The Valentine's Day fixed price menu was great! My wife and I love variety in the menu and the champagne pairing was well done. This has been our favorite spot from some time now and we love that even the regular menu is never the same. Chef Simon continues to keep the food fresh and inventive."

  • "Took my girlfriend for valentine's day and was not disappointed. As a student the price was a bit much but I can easily say it was the single best meal I've ever had. Well worth the price. Absolutely fantastic"

  • "Avoid the Caribbean chicken dish with rice and plantains. It was served on a cold plate, had little taste, and all food on the plate was in the same color family except for some parsley. Slow service. Not a typical meal or experience at this restaurant."

  • "Sargasso is amazingly consistent. Great food all the time. I eat here regularly and the kitchen is a model of high-standard consistency."

  • "I have eaten at Sargasso's a number of times and have enjoyed it. This time, however, the food was very average. The Sargasso salad offered a small amount celery slices with a few walnuts and feta. Very average taste. The scallops entree consisted of three scallops, which were tasty, with a large mound of lentils and sautéed greens. Again, the food was not particularly tasty--and would have expected more than three scallops. As I treated friends to a nice dinner out, I was a bit disappointed overall."

  • "While Sargasso offers a short, but diverse and tasty menu, a visit between Christmas and New Year seemed to catch the kitchen overstretched. Specials of the day, soups & entrees, were tepid (temperature) on delivery and the overall experience lacked the attention to detail and sparkle that we have come to expect. Lamb and salmon were delicious. Wine list is good. Overall, not at all bad, but not superlative."

  • "Sargasso is a lovely restaurant located in Morgantown, WV. It is probably the best restaurant for foodies in this area. My husband and I visited on New Years Eve. The chef had Price-fixe menu for the holiday. Each of four courses was accompanied by a champagne tasting (yummy). There were numerous selections available for each course. I choose their calamari; and, was not disappointed. My second course was lobster bisque. It was delicious and served at the perfect temperature. I selected Scallops as my entree....cooked perfectly with a nice sear. And ended with the chefs cheesecake with rhubarb sauce. The service was spot on and the meal was nicely paced....we were not rushed but never waited for the next course."

  • "Hubby ordered the Flour Dusted Calamari; I reluctantly tasted it as I'm not a big fan of calamari. It was absolutely delicious, very delicate with an Asian sweet glaze. I ordered the Sargasso salad of celery, walnuts. dates Feta cheese served with drops of fresh cranberry coulis -- very innovative and tasty. He had the Creekstone Center Cut Filet which he said was cooked perfectly. Sides of Brussels Sprouts, Potatoes in Fillo Pastry, Tomato, Onion were excellent. I had a Seafood Risotto with crab, shrimp, and scallop that was delicious. Our only disappointment was the Crème Brulee which was very thin and could have used more "crème" and much less "brulee". My white chocolate pecan ice cream made up for this other wise dessert deficiency."

  • "Excellent food! The best since I was last in Las Vegas. Very elegant food presentation without the over-the-top plate decorations. The flour dusted calamari appetizer was hands down one of the best I've ever had. Very nice atmosphere and very hospitable host and service. Love, love loved it."

  • "Sargasso has somewhat of a reputation for being too expensive but we found our last dinner to be pretty much in line with other nice restaurants we go to. This visit, two of our party requested the chef to make them a vegetarian alternative other than the one item on the menu. The server asked for their preferences of spices, hotness, etc and the chef prepared a beautiful and delicious coconut curry. Others of us had the salmon and the scallops which were also very good. The service was . The server was appropriately attentive and related well to our group."

  • "This place has some of the best food in Morgantown, if not the best!!! Great atmosphere and good lighting. Some things are great some are fabulous, as with every nice restaurant, they try to over do everything, instead of keeping the simple things simple."

  • "Sargasso is consistently the best "special occasion" restaurant in Morgantown. The service is the greatest strength, followed by the quietly elegant and sophisticated ambience. The food is generally very good but occasionally comes up short of the high expectations we have formed based on many experiences here. For residents and visitors alike, Sargasso is a winner."
