Diner Reviews
  • "Weve had the pleasure of dining in the wine cellar before with a very special group of friends for an exquisite dining experience. But this was our first time in the Captain's Dining Room. A fabulous meal! My sole was cooked perfectly, husband's medium rare New York just right, cocktails delish, and topped off with great service from our waiter Michael. Since we were at a late sitting and near closing we enjoyed an impromptu conversation about a shared love of music with a couple of waiters. Fun night, fab food, definitely on our list of places to return to on our annual trek to Monterey."

  • "We sat in the atrium...our first time and a wonderful treat. My only criticism is that the main courses seem very expensive, so look at the menu before you decide to dine there."

  • "Took an out of town group here for a dinner. All were in town for the annual California Olive Oil council members meeting. As such, all knew and appreciated well prepared food. Requests: "quiet with good food". Half were from the East coast and half from the west, and all travelers and foodies. We had a fantastic evening. Comments like " this restaurant sets a new gold standard for me". Everything from the attentive, but not overbearing service, presentation of the food, the food itself, and the ambience was perfect, couldn't be better. As I was the one who made the reservation, being in-town, all I can say is: thanks Sardine factory for the great evening---and thanks for making me look so good!"

  • "This restaurant should be the best. The rooms are well appointed and the staff is very personable. Unfortunately the food did not measure up to its price tag. I also feel that a minimum dress code should be enforced. A$300-$400 dinner should not be had in jeans and a t shirt."

  • "We were seated in a quiet room with fireplace, and comfortable chairs. Very pleased that we were not seated in the conservatory, which was pretty but loud. Pleasant service, attentive but not obtrusive. Artichoke bisque was delicious. Entree specials of scallops and halibut were perfectly cooked and delicious."

  • "We arrived, were greeted, seated and served drinks. My husband received his salad, which was good( iceberg with bacon, blue cheese). Then we waited. For almost an hour. When our chicken and sole arrived, they were good. But we left after that. It was really gettingtoo late for dessert. The kitchen must have had an issue. The food was great, but really took too long."

  • "Famous place that you need to visit and eat if you have never tried before. Environment is nice especially when you seat at sun room. fresh oyster is excellent. but steak is too salty! foods are overall so so in considering the price. Service is good but some waitress do not seem to smile at all! Nice memu for kids but they are not cheap in considering a small portion."

  • "We've been eating at the Sardine Factory for over 25 years and it a must if you haven't had the experience. Incredible food and ambiance!"

  • "Was our tenth annivesary. The previous year had been tough with me retiring and her a new job. Preplanned with Marty a few weeks in advance. Gary made all the plans come to life with style and grace. Food and service was excellent!!! Was very special indeed!"

  • "We had our 10th anniversary here and it was clearly one of the top meals of our decade together. We were delighted with the attention and service and the food was outstanding. The freshness and portions perfect for our expectations of this fine dining experience. The filet was done exactly as we requested. We could not have asked for a more pleasant experience and we are very picky! We were surprised at how many children were in the restaurant and some of them noisy. The captains room was a good choice for the fact that the conservatory was noisier for certain for a Sunday evening."

  • "We celebrated my son's graduation from DLI there. Not only were they the only restaurant in the area willing to make reservations for a group of 12, they went out of their way to make it a special occasion for us. We were seated in the beautiful Conservatory room and our server, Sunny (Sonny?) was outstanding, giving us the very best of service."

  • "My wife had a drink in mind that she really wanted but didn't know the name of it, the waitress there took the time to Google the name of the drink to find out what its ingredients were, we thought that was very nice. Our waiter was a very nice gentleman who was from or going to North Dakota or South Dakota. It was our 1st years anniversary so he gave us a free drink and a free dessert which was very nice. The manager Marty was very attentive to everything that we needed that night. Our overall dining experience was excellent and we will definitely be going back soon."

  • "I've always heard great things about the restaurant, and I was glad that I was not disappointed. That will definitely be my go to restaurant when I'm in town."

  • "My mom and I went for dinner on a recent trip to Monterey. Our server, Sunny was non-existent. After walking around all day, we went for an early dinner, which I'd made a reservation. The restaurant was not busy, nor was Sunny rushing around. Finally, his coworker asked if we'd like a drink. Sunny never asked us if we'd like a second drink (so, we went back to our hotel's bar). The food was great & my mom really enjoyed her meal. There are too many great restaurants in the area to put up with poor service. I wouldn't recommend this one."

  • "My fiance and I we spending the weekend in Monterery and we decided to "upgrade" to Sadine Factory instead of another more moderate priced resturant in the area. We made a reservation on open table for 8:30 this past Saturday. We arrived at a very crowed very loud resturant 10 mins early. We checked in and were immediately informed they were running behind. I understand this happens but how they handled the situation was horrible. We were seated at 9 and when they asked "how are you tonight?" I responded, well our reservation was for 8:30! His responds was "well isn't this worth the wait?" I was thinking no! The food was okay. My fiance and I are not millions. We work hard for our money and for those prices we we expecting more."

  • "We had never been here even though we knew of its reputation and frends/relatives highly recommnded it. We'll the food and service definitely lived up to expectations. The prices were 10-15% higher than other "high-end" restaurants we have visited, but worth it if you are looking for great service and a nice meal. The wine list is voluminous with a nice selection of California whites and reds. We went with a bottle of 2002 Duckhorn Merlot which went nicely with the lamb, shrimp, sole, and pasta marinara that the 4 of us enjoyed. We always enjoy nice restaurants that have a kids menu and do not either force you to share or buy an expensive entree for a child, or worse just are not kid friendly."

  • "I can't say enough good things about The Sardine Factory. I ate here almost 30 years ago and I still remember that dinner! Stayed in Monterey over the weekend and when the question came up of "where should we eat?" I immediately thought of The Sardine Factory. It was everything I remembered and more. We had the Halibut and the Lobster. Both servings were very substantial and they melted in your mouth. The presentation was beautiful, the room was beautiful (we sat in the Conservatory and its gorgeous at night when its all lit up!) The bar is really fun with a great piano player who takes requests and the bartender Mike was really friendly. If you are a foody, eat at The Sardine Factory. You won't be disappointed!"

  • "I ordered the steak & lobster & the lobster was very salty. I sent it back & the replacement lobster was tough & tasteless. The calamari was also tough & didn't seem to be fresh. The others at the table seemed to enjoy their meals & the lobster cost was removed from our bill. The artichoke soup was outstanding."

  • "In our 40 years of dining at The Sardine Factory, service and cuisine have always been outstanding. When living in Fremont, the 90 mile trip was well worth it. Now from Morgan Hill we are able to experience the Conservatory much more often."

  • "Best restaurant in Monterey--delicious, great ambiance, impeccable service, upscale yet charming. I hadn't been in years and was hoping it was as good as I had remembered. I was not disappointed!"

  • "Took my family here for an early evening meal. My expectations weren't high, as self-proclaimed "world famous" places tend to disappoint. Happy to report that we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! The food and service were all better than expected and the conservatory is a nice dining space. (Oh, and the kids loved the ice swan. I know, sorry, but I couldn't help myself)."

  • "Lovely atrium dining but the food was over-priced for what you got and the sauces were heavy and under-seasoned. Won't go again."

  • "I know kid friendly and romantic don't normally go together but this time it does. service was great and they place us, by our request, away from others as to not disturb other diners. Very friendly staff and food was great albeit pricey."

  • "My wife and I took a short vacation to Monterey from out of town to celebrate her 60th birthday, and we couldn't have picked a better spot for dinner. The food was excellent, the best we had on our entire trip, and the service was outstanding. This meal will stand out as a highlight of our trip!"

  • "Was very disappointed in the food this time. I ordered Baked Alaskan that didn't even arrive with a flame. We also called ahead for the special menu for $29.95. We were told you still have that. We got there and the menu was not on the table. We love that special and was looking forward to it."

  • "A Sunday night end to a weekend in Monterey was a little disappointing. The service was good. There were very few people at the restaurant that night. However, abalone chowder was great but the Parmesan seafood dish was not. Scallops not cooked through and calamari a little tough. Expected much better food for cost."

  • "LOOONG wait even with reservation, 40min past. Quite accustom to fine dining, but food was very sloooow to be served. Food was good, but prolonged waits spoiled the experience. My date ended up simply boxing her entrée, paid the bill and left :( May try again, but only if I want to kill an evening."

  • "Love that this place has some history and is a standard for dining in Monterey. Location to our hotel on Cannery Row was a quick short walk away. The food was good, but not incredible. Service was a little slow (waited for at least 10 minutes for anyone to notice we were seated at our table and offer drinks, etc.)."

  • "This restaurant is a classic. Vintage photos on the walls, booths and dark wood give this restaurant an old time "fine dining" experience."

  • "I had experienced the Sardine Factory 6 or 7 times over the years when in Monterey on business and loved it. This time it was leisure and I was able to take my wife who had only been there a couple of times for banquet luncheons so this trip was her first dinner experience and we both loved it. Our server made the experience very special, the food was delicious and everything seemed great. Good enough that I am booking a private room for our 40th anniversary."

  • "The Sardine Factory is a great place to dine. Everything from the historic setting to the food is special. You must have the Truffled Tator Tots, a flavor blast! The wine list is so extensive that it is in a binder with a Table of Contents. The food selections from fresh fish to mouth watering beef selections can't be beat. This is simply a jewel and a Monterey must dine."

  • "Nice themed dining areas. Food was good but not extraordinary, pricey for the amount and quality of the food. Service was excellent."

  • "For movie buffs this is the place in "Play Misty for Me" where Jessica Walter stalked Clint Eastwood while he sat in his car parked in front of the Sardine Factory. And the interior is as intriguing as it's very much like dining in a museum with fine art all around. And of course the entire area is Cannery Row, made famous by Steinbeck. The filet mignon was mushy rather than chewing and it was slathered in some topping that was uncalled for with a really good steak. The chocolate dipped ice cream balls served on a plate of bubbling dry ice is a show that makes the good ice cream taste better. A big disappointment was that the white wine was not kept chilled after opening. And the waitress was pleasant but less attentive than expected."
