Diner Reviews
  • "This place is a staple in the neighborhood but I think they take their reputation for granted. The service wasn't very good and they seemed distracted in terms of whose bill it was or the order. I think they can't take all of that for granted with so many new places opening up"

  • "This is the original location. The staff was friendly & attentive, the food preparation and service prompt, and the meal filling. I ordered the roasted chicken salad & was pleased to see, unlike most chicken salads - which generally are mostly mixed greens with some chicken - this rustic salad was mostly chicken with some hearty vegetables included. The salad did come with fingerling potatoes despite my request those be left out, but fortunately was a very minor ingredient compared to the chicken, asparagus & mushrooms. A note the prices are on the expensive end, but worth it for a treat. The chocolate pot de creme dessert was nothing special, however - like any chocolate pudding mix - so recommend trying other items on the dessert menu."

  • "I have to admit, Sarabeth's offerings are some of the best a restaurant of this type has to offer. Fresh ingredients, properly and professionally prepared and presented with style. We had brunch on a Sunday and all the egg entrees were cooked to perfection as were the accompaniments. My problem was the price. New York has an abundance of fantastic restaurants that offer just as good and well prepared food as Sarabeth's at well below what Sarabeth's is getting. I saw no added value because Sarabeth's was the purveyor, so I was disappointed. Great food, not so great a price."

  • "The menu is not eclectic--just full of goodness, like braised lamb shanks and lobster mac'n'cheese. There is something for everyone. The food was served hot and was delicious. Everyone at the table ordered something different and enjoyed their meal. The desserts were delicious. Live jazz definitely enhances the experience. Lots of neighborhood locals and "regulars" in the crowd. We will definitely go back."

  • "My friend and I went to a Broadway show and then to the Beacon Theater. In between, we chose to have an early dinner at Sarabeth's. What a pleasant surprise! Food was great, wait staff was attentive and the atmosphere was open and friendly."

  • "The service was great, the staff friendly and willing to help, the ambiance was fantastic. The food....not so good. Very bland and the filet mignon was overrun with gravy, the meal was a bit of a letdown after everything else was so good......"

  • "We enjoyed a very nice dinner here after a show at the Beacon. The food was great and the service friendly and attentive. A lovely neighborhood made our experience exceptional."

  • "I've visited Sarabeth's (Upper West Side) a number of times and have never been disappointed. The staff are always very pleasant, the setting is comfortable and the food is delicious. My girlfriend is allergic to dairy but there of mains that she can have - and is always very happy with them! We think it's a lovely spot for lunch or dinner and will continue to go back! The online table-booking tool is very handy, too. Would happily recommend!"

  • "I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Sarabeth's Upper West Side on a Thursday evening. The food was amazing and the live jazz was a bonus. Our server could not have nicer or more helpful! I would definitely recommend this place. The brunch/breakfast menu is also amazing!"

  • "Came for our 36th wedding anniversary from VA Requested a window seat and was waiting for us when we arrived. Food and service was wonderful! We were there in evening; I had the snapper and my husband the flatiron steak. Both were made to perfection. Wish I lived in area, would eat here all the time!"

  • "The service was very good. They all were very kind. I ate dinner with my friend and we all were satisfied with foods. I think the tomato soup is great and it's enough as a meal."

  • "Took my mom here for brunch, we had a great time. Ate delicious omelets and scones, my mom also got some fabulous iced tea. Very reasonable price point, I will go back!"

  • "I came to Sarabeth's West for a night with some girlfriends and I thoroughly enjoyed my time. Although I heard rave reviews about the brunch fare, the dinner menu was great and the food was delicious. The drinks were top notch as well. The service was decent, although the waitresses were singing (blaming it on boredom and a near empty restaurant), which bothered me. Another serious restaurant pet peeve, which is common in NYC, is that we got grief over splitting the check. I wrote out what each person got and their method of payment, but had to fix it when the waitress realized I hadn't put exact amounts for her. How hard is it to split a check? It's 2014! "

  • "I have never had a bad meal at Sarabeth's. As usual, this dinner was delicious. The service was accomodating and curteous. Seating was comfy. Sarabeth's is one of my neighborhood favorites."

  • "Although sometimes impossible to get in for brunch, and well-deserved, dinner is a more sedate and non-stressed experience. It's a relief from the stressed bar crowd nearby and the quality is admirable. No, it's not trend-setting or the latest fad; it's reliable, consistent, and always satisfying. It's called good cooking."

  • "When my husband and I want impeccable food - my salmon was outstanding - we head for Sarabeth's to be cared for in it's refreshing atmosphere sort of like a wonderful wrap-around porch in the Hamptons. So civilized; excellent service; food selections have been edited over the years to provide a variety of choices from the warm breads trough the excellent desserts. We love this place - And love to go there at the end of the week, especially in the summer when so many go away for the weekends that it's an oasis of calm - with yummy food!"

  • "Way overbooked. Had a reservation and had to wait 20 minutes standing in a crowded line with waiters trying to get past people in order to serve customers Very chaotic scene. Would not go back "

  • "Yes, the food was good, the service fine, but typical of restaurants these days, the acoustics and screaming babies (11 a.m. on a weekday) made the experience less than ideal. Plus, the bench at the booth at which I was sitting was extremely uncomfortable and too far from the table I left with a backache."

  • "Fantastic service! Checked in, sat down, in the next 15 minutes the place filled up and went on a wait. Energetic bright and beautiful. Best meal that I had in NYC. Had the smoked salmon eggs benedict. Wow! Really LOVED everything about Sarabeth's. Wish we had one in Columbus, OH. I'd go every week."

  • "Not quite the experience I remember…. Food wasn't great, and they had changed the menu. My beloved Papa Bear Porridge was no longer an option and the omelet I chose instead was a bit on the dry side. I opted to not have toast, but there was no other side or garnish served with the omelet. I ordered some sausage on the side and the presentation was sloppier than I remember in the past. This used to be a regular spot whenever I visited NYC, but I'm not sure I'll go back. :-("

  • "I have been wanting to go to Sarabeth's for years but it has never been convenient. I thought it would be a wonderful mother's day spot but was disappointed. I thought it would be more of a ladies lunch spot was surprised there weren't flowers or other spring décor. I ordered the steak and although it was delicious the sauce was very salty. The rolls were a bit stale but good. We ordered dessert since Sarabeth started as a baker and for $9 we got 5 small mediocre cookies. Only the small double chocolate cookie was a standout the rest could have been a cookie from a box."

  • "We eat here a couple times a year on family visits to the upper west side (museum of natural history, etc.). We think of it as a solid comfort food option, we find that the quality is consistently good. They have a kids menu. "

  • "Never disappoints!! Always leave satisfied. Only down side- doesn't allow strollers anywhere inside so we had to sit outside. Luckily it was nice enough to sit outside. "

  • "I was disappointed by my recent visit to Sarabeth's. The waitress was clumsy, spilled water and was rough with the plates, seemed hurried and didn't crack a smile. The place mats were frayed around the edges, and we were seated right next to the entrance where there was a lot of traffic and draft. The food was mediocre and not how I remembered it to be. Overall, I felt that it was overpriced for its quality. Perhaps Sarabeth's became a little too comfortable with its fame and the fact that it could attract diners without putting in much effort - they should remember that although they may continue to attract tourists and one-time visitors, they will lose returning customers if they stop paying attention to quality of food and service."

  • "restaurant closes at 10pm, our group had to rush, there was no time left for dessert, service was not very friendly, served pasta was not warm"

  • "Overpriced average food. Does not live up to reputation. Our NY friend told us afterward that quality dropped with expansion."

  • "If Sarabeth's would serve their breakfast and brunch menu during dinner hours, I feel they would do a better dinner! Dinner food was very mediocre. My brother had the lobster which was rubbery and others had the spaghetti with broccoli rabe. The dish had a distinct butter flavor instead of olive oil which really was unappealing. My husband had the salmon which he felt was fine. My best part of the meal was the delicious cocktail with strawberry and tequila!"

  • "I have been a loyal customer of Sarabeth's for the last 20 years and although that speaks for itself, I will never go back again! I had been asked to recommend a quiet place for dinner with great food. Sarabeth's! My guest, a Royal Family member from the UAE welcomed the opportunity with open arms. HRH was excited. What a mistake! When my guest requested a "side" of olive oil from our waitress and never received it, we asked our busboy. After 5 minutes when we did receive it and His Highness had finished his salad , so he refused it. The waitress was so annoyed she had the nerve to then come back and then say YOU DONT WANT THIS NOW? Not a clue, of what our table needed. The Ice Tea was sour, the beef Filet over cooked..and so on . "

  • "We have often enjoyed Sarabeth's brunches but dinner left us cold. The rolls were hard and icy. We sent them back and received the same basket back after it was quickly heated up. The marinara sauce on the kids' pasta was not tasty. And the steak dinners were uninspired at best. The peppercorn sauce was goopy and gelatinous. The steak was simply "meh." My advice? Stick with the ricotta pancakes. "

  • "the heirloom tomato salad was great - the shrimp risotto was great BUT: the skirt steak had so much garlic it was overwhelming - there was a brown sauce as well - not sure if the garlic was on the steak or the brown sauce - on a bed of spinach good flavor of the steak - cooked exactly medium rare as requested - but the garlic was really too much (I like garlic but not to this degree) please advise the chef / kitchen so that other diners are saved from this excess"
