A word from Sant Ambroeus - Madison Avenue
Shortly after the original Sant Ambroeus opened its doors in Milan in 1936, a devoted following emerged. This celebrated pasticceria and confetteria became the meeting place for the local intelligentsia, whether beginning their day with Sant Ambroeus’s legendary cappuccino and cornetto, savoring panini at lunch, or spending their evening enjoying refined cuisine in the restaurant’s elegant dining room.
We translated these old-world sensibilities of Sant Ambroeus to modern times, and imported our rich culinary traditions to New York. Each of our restaurants remains authentic to our Milanese origins, and we continue to serve our culturally inspired delectables in a casual yet elegant environment.

Diner Reviews
  • "This is a very noisy restaurant and for the ridiculous price, the food was average. The pasta was under cooked and the rest of the dinners were average. I could get the same at my local Itailian restaurant for way less. The only good thing was the service."

  • "I loved the ambiance. Very elegant and laid back. Me and my fiance loved the great attention from the staff, all sweet. Expect for one blonde woman in the bakery. Overall i loved it but one thing i did not expect or like watsoever was the food! Very bland and definitely not worth $12 or $48!!!"

  • "Had a lovely breakfast - would highly recommend -- the service was discreet and efficient"

  • "The duck ragu was extraordinary (was a special that night). Six yr old daughter enjoyed the bolognese and the selection of sorbet and gelato. They accommodated our stroller despite a sign on the door saying the opposite."

  • "The green lasagna is a must. They also sell pastries and gelato in the front."

  • "I found out about Sant Ambroeus by browsing the Open Table site. This place on the Upper East Side is an absolute gem. The restaurant is located at the back, while up front there is a coffee bar and an assortment of pastries available for purchase. I had breakfast there last Saturday morning. I ordered the yogurt parfait, a plain crostini and a cappuccino; my mom opted for the pancakes topped with cinnamon and fresh fruit. The service and presentation were phenomenal and the food and coffee were extremely tasty. I shall return!"

  • "A first time at Sant Ambroeus--but not the last. Beautifully presented food, tasting as good as it looks. Although not inexpensive, worth the price."

  • "great food and desserts but for some reason their chocolate sauce as served over vanilla gelato was simply terrible.. not dark, not thick, not hot... but cold, thin, and tasteless, they should be ashamed of themselves.... their pastry chef should sample good chocolate sauce anywhere in Belgium for example or Angelina in Paris, then make it even better!"

  • "This place had good food especially desserts but unfortunately there was no one younger than the age of 60 there than us! The ambience was awful and we felt rushed most of the time with waiters coming over to our table constantly to clear it so they can seat an old couple. I will not be going back!!!"

  • "We loved everything about Sant Ambroeus on Madison Avenue. Service was spot on and food delicious. Sommelier recommended the most wonderful bottle of white wine. We will be back very soon. "

  • "A lovely experience, I remember it from 40 years ago, always a great neighborhood gem......... The food is delicious but I have to say, it has gotten very expensive...........i will still go there, but the prices are out of sight."

  • "This place was great! I made an early reservation and the resturant was pretty empty when we arrived however we were still seated on top of another table. When I asked the hostess about this she was not eager to change my table. Thankfully Dino came over and was able to give us one of the empty tables. He picked a great wine and our server was outstanding! The food was quite good and we did not feel rushed at all. I will be back to this resturant."

  • "Never mind that you are actually on Madison and 77th Street in New York, this little slice of authentic high end Italy is a perfect spot for breakfast, lunch, coffee or dinner. The food is always deliciously prepared and the ambiance, service and presentation perfectly Italian. They offer what i consider the best coffee/espresso drinks in the neighborhood."

  • "We were in NY for the weekend and decided to stop in for breakfast our last morning. Everything from the apricot pastry to the eggs to the crispy pancetta bacon... all was great topped off by their killer coffee. We left smiling, as usual!"

  • "I am glad I chose this place for a special dinner for my daughter, a college student home for the break. I now plan to take my wife. Great place! Great food! Great atmosphere!"

  • "This was our first impression of Sant Ambroeus are we were delighted. The quality of the food, the warm attentive service and the ambience all contributed to a first class dining experience. I enjoyed the tuna tartare as a starter and found super fresh product with a perfect blend of capers and avocado. The breaded veal chop was the finest that I have tasted in NYC - wonderful golden color and surprisingly light. The deserts are a delight and should be sampled over may progressive visits with the best espresso in the City. We will be back - many times !"

  • "Great place for coffee lovers and a huge selection of pastries."

  • "Crowded and a bit crazy, but food is outstanding. Service is very professional, though you're likely to get bumped from time to time as servers navigate through the confined spaces. Intelligently chosen wines. Not where you should go for a romantic night out, but great for a nice lunch if you are shopping Madison Avenue."

  • "After being sandwiched between two tables, and literally having the waiter's elbow in our food, we decided this place was not of the same class as the one in Southampton. Two hundred dollars for lunch warrants at least a thank you!"

  • "The food was fine but way, way overpriced. Our waiter was not particularly attentive. If I am going to spend that much on dinner, there are any number of places I would prefer to go for a much better dining experience."

  • "The hostess has such a bad attitude and the service is so so bad. Food is ok, max vote 6. The restaurant is expensive but it s not a problem because you know that before to go. The problem is the service, the waIters and the hostess. Horrible service"

  • "the place is jammed and the sound level in the back room of the restaurant is almost unbearable. The food is ok but in the overall , it does not justify the price. You just want to eat and leave, which is disappointing. We prefer to come at the bar in the first part of the restaurant to enjoy the delicious coffee, outstanding pastries and gelate. This is much more satisfying!"

  • "Once there was a time when Sant Ambroeus was the height of Euro sophistication in the Upper East Side. That time has passed. Having only enjoyed what I will openly admit, is amazing specialty coffee drinks in the front, I thought it a great idea to try the sit down restaurant in the back. Not my brightest plan to book a table without checking the menu prices. Of the two risotto dishes only one, Frutti di mare had real flavor. The sapharon risotto basically tasted like boiled rice. Completely flavorless and for $25 a plate hughly disappointing. Not one to visit without a healthy wallet and a risk taker view of ordering. Sorry Sant Ambroeus but the bread was really the best part."

  • "I have gone to Sant Androeus several times over the years because 1) it is located within easy walking distance of the Metropolitan Museum and 2) because the food and atmosphere never fail to soothe and delight. This time, in addition to the above, I was impressed by the superior quality of the service. The two captains constantly prowled the restaurant overseeing the service, and the wait staff was clearly committed to serve -- not to chat among themselves or be overly familiar or inattentive. Very pleasant yet 100% professional."

  • "There is no where I would rather eat. Perfect for panini. Best cappuccino in NYC. This restaurant would be great in italy."

  • "Us being from out of town, the person we were meeting with suggested this place. It's very professional and nice. They will take your coat for you when you arrive. I would suggest booking a reservation online at least a week in advance. My hopeful reservation (4 days later) for 12:30 had to be made for 12:15 because all times were booked until 2:15. Most of the menu is in Italian, so decide what you want before you arrive (unless you know all your Italian named dishes). All-in-all the restaurant was very nice, the meeting went well, and I had the special (fish, asparagus, and green beans). I would recommend trying this place."

  • "I don't care for restaurants with attitude, high prices and mediocre food. That pretty much sums up Saint Ambroeus. There are so many more restaurants in the area with an equally nice atmosphere that also have great food and service. After paying $22 at breakfast for a dish of smoked salmon with crackers, I was surprised to be charged $5 for a "side order" of cream cheese. Coffee, at $7/pot, was not even good. I will never waste time and money returning."

  • "Food was Good Annoying thing happened Still drinking coffee and they took sugar away for another table Can't afford table settings for every table what if you wanted more coffee For the price service is average"

  • "very nice welcoming but we did not expect to pay that price, expensive for pasta plates."

  • "Very popular place that has withstanded the test of time. Beautifully decorated - almost as pretty as the people and the staff! Service is welcoming and warm. Food is great. Prices are steep but well worth it for a terrific lunch filled with smiles, energy and people watching."
