Diner Reviews
  • "To my regret, I was disappointed -- after years on enjoyment. The frites on the steak frites were hard and hardly edible. They served the wrong dish to each of us (who gets the rare, who the medium ?) This would not have happened in other years."

  • "My group of 5 and I loved the dinner we had here the other night. The food was delicious, the service was extremely helpful but unobtrusive, and the drinks were very well-made. A bit pricey, but absolutely worth it. I'd suggest it for a romantic night out, a special occasion, or just for a nice treat."

  • "Wonderful little place to have a double date - quiet, relaxed, not jam packed and therefore alot more comfortable than most places in the area. The food was excellent and the waiter was fun and had a great personality. Overall great night!"

  • "Visiting our son, an M.I.T. student. Wanted a fine dining experience on our dining plan. Very nice ambience and food was generally good. My wife's entrée, pan seared scallops, came out colder than room temperature, not good but she didn't want to send it back since our waitress already forgot to bring us a bread plate (we asked the bus boy for it) and seemed to be having a bad day. Our appetizers were excellent as was my entrée. Place deserves another visit."

  • "we chose from a la carte and restaurant week menus. Escargot, foie gras, duck, All was delicious, service was personable. We finished the night with the 45 year tawny port, very smooth, nice finish. Definitely going back."

  • "An elegant but affordable lunch in Harvard square."

  • "Always a warm welcome to make you feel at home. Choucroute garnie and other Alsatian specialties are on the menu --- perfectly, authentically served. The wine list offers good pairing choices. Ingredients are impeccably seasoned. Portions are generous. The refreshing House Sorbets are the perfect way to end dinner. While the dining room is good-sized, tables are spaced well for quiet conversation. The lighting is gentle and flattering. On a peaceful Harvard Sq. side street, you feel as if you're at your favorite "little Parisian neighborhood restaurant"."

  • "This restaurant is the perfect cozy place for a lunch break from the busy Harvard Square. The food is excellent and our waiter was very nice. Everyone was quite welcoming. This was not our first time at Sandrine's and we will definitely return."

  • "Perhaps going there one or two more times could give them a fair chance, but I am not impressed with their presentation (of food) nor the quality. I ordered steak and fries--fries were included without a choice. But for a restaurant with white table cloth, I think they can do better. Presenting just steak and fries disappointed me, and the fries were like McDonald's, if you like theirs..you should order this dish."

  • "After reading all the nice reviews regarding Sandrine's Bistro, we expected to have a great meal. I can honestly say that our experience met and exceeded those expectations. Our server was very sweet, We had a nice intimate table in the corner. The wine was good and the Godiva martini was a great way to top off the night!!"

  • "Nice salad, lovely ambience for a business lunch. The service was prompt and friendly, but even though the place was only half full, the server began making it clear at the hour mark that time was of the essence! I don't like being rushed, even if very politely."

  • "First time at Sandrine's, so we didn't know what to expect. My daughter had passed by the restaurant several times as she is a student at Harvard and suggested we go there for dinner. We were not disappointed. The service was very good as was the food. It was not too crowded, so noise wasn't a factor. We will definitely return."

  • "We recently visited Sandrine's for a birthday celebration for one of our family. The food is outstanding. The salads, sauces and attention to detail in the food really stands out. A good, classic, authentic French menu. Very attentive service without being overbearing. Lovely atmosphere. Don't miss dessert!"

  • "We really enjoyed our evening at Sardines. We needed a restaurant in the Square where we could get a reservation since we had a nearby show. We were surprised at how charming it was and how good the food was for a reasonable price given the location. We will come again."

  • "Sandrines is one of my favorite places to dine in Harvard Square. Very comfortable elegance; friendly, knowledgeable and good service...and REALLY good food. Their 'Tarte Flambe' ( a series of pizza like creations with extremely thin crispy white crust, some kind of white sauce and various toppings is an old favorite. This time I also had the half roast chicken: crispy ans succulent. And the chocolate deserts.....:;)"

  • "The food at Sandrine's is always great and the lunchtime vibe is relaxed but very nice. Easy to have conversations and the waitstaff was helpful, courteous and didn't rush us. A great midday break. Perfect for a a business meeting or just seeing a couple of good friends. And a great wine list."

  • "My husband and I disagree on this - he liked his terrine appetizer but said it was overly sweet - I found the lobster avocado appetizer that was on special to lack seasoning - it needed more citrus/acid to bring out the other flavors. I had the duck with wild rice and barley risotto for my entree. The duck had good texture though the skin was not crisp enough - but again, it lacked seasoning. The risotto was also lacking in flavor and the peas in it were overcooked. The entire plate needed a sauce - something to elevate it from the doldrums of bland. My husband, in contrast, loved his plate of choucroute and charcuterie - so maybe this is a restaurant for those who are keener on pork products than I am. For the price I expect better."

  • "The continental cuisine at this restaurant is vibrant and up to date. The food is locally or well sourced. Each part of the dinner is memorable. For example, I'm dying to know the recipe for the turnip, carrot, red pepper side dish to the sea bass. My duck was well worth ordering over and over. The cheese plate for dessert was small but scrumptious."

  • "An institution in Harvard Square that over the years has been deteriorating in terms of quality of food. It remains an attractive place with a pleasant ambiance. None of the appetizers were remarkable. The escargots were particularly un-inspired. The "Tartes flambees" were warmed up from Trader Joe. While they replaced one tarte with a salad, it was pathetic: smoked trout from Cosco!"

  • "Wonderful warm atmosphere with reasonable prices and not too loud on a Feb Friday night in the middle of Harvard sq. Potato carrot soup was delicious, creamy and not too rich. Roti chicken and salmon entrees were perfectly done with ample portions. All the waiters have charming French accents and offered attentive service. We'll be back."

  • "This was our second "special occasion" at Sandrine's and we will be back. They get everything right: food, decor, ambiance, and service, and they don't neglect the basics: when you order a rare steak, that is what you will get, and everything will be perfectly cooked and seasoned. Love the escargot! Our waiter was very pleasant (without being effusive) and extremely efficient (without popping up and interrupting conversation every few minutes. Sandrine's could be a case study of how a restaurant should be run."

  • "We have been going to Harvard Square for years and somehow, have never been to Sandrine's Bistro. We went on Valentine's Weekend and really enjoyed ourselves. The service was top-notch and the food was amazing. There was a special menu in play for the weekend for Valentine's Day, so we didn't get to try the regular fare. Honestly, I wanted to scrape every bit of the sauce off my plate. My husband enjoyed his rack of lamb and left feeling full (not easy to do with lamb). One thing we both appreciated was that the food was hot when it came from the kitchen - not warm, but like it just came off the stove. It's a little thing but made a big difference. We are looking forward to a return visit to try the regular menu. Definitely worth a visit."

  • "Went to this place for Valentines Day. The place is lovely and the staff were extremely thoughtful and friendly. However, our waiter was not so great - he did not check on us and was mostly MIA. It was the waiter for the other table that attended to us half of the time. In terms of the food, the beet salad was good, the bread -delicious, the scallops were great but the portion was not very much, ,the salmon was underwelming. The best part of dinner was the chocolate dessert which was amazing. The bill was pretty steep, as is commonly the case in French restaurants. Overall, I recommend this place but with some reservation. I think its quite nice for special occassions."

  • "Excellent food in a great setting at reasonable prices."

  • "Food wasn't necessarily bad, but based on reviews I read prior to arriving, I had higher expectations. Food plate presentations were not very inventive with paper doilies used for the rillette, which, in my opinion, was served far too cold. The scallops, while cooked to a perfect tender state, were bland and cam with an uninspired squash puree. One sprig of parsley adorned the plate. The salmon was also cooked well, but lacked a fresh salmon flavor. Food has a good start, but needs a bit of punch and the plates could look more appealing. Service was very good."

  • "I dined at this restaurant a year ago and really liked it. I took my wife there for valentine's day and was sorely disappointment. Their greed for money clearly ruled. They tried to seat us in a dungeon they had opened up for that day in the basement, which was overheated. We asked to be seated in the dining room and had to wait over an hour past our reservation time. There were many couples who had to wait to be reseated. We waited 30 minutes to get our appetizer and 50 minutes to get our entrees. To make matters worse, our entrees were totally subpar. The scallops were over cooked and lacked flavor. The sauce was, well, we had to move everything off to the side. The wait and host staff were apololgizing all night. Uncomfortable!"

  • "My wife and I came here on the night before Valentine's Day for a romantic date night. The place was big and nearly empty, so it had no ambiance or intimacy. The situation could have been helped by closing the curtains on one section of the restaurant, but that area was open, adding to the feeling that you were in an empty room. I asked for a table in the corner, and could hear every single word of a very obnoxious conversation 2 tables away. The service was overly eager; the waiter came and asked us if we'd selected drinks or food every 2 minutes, and he had not even given us the wine list. The food (escargots and gilled quail) were very good, but it did not make up for the otherwise disappointing dining experience."

  • "Lovely, romantic restaurant with very good French food, Service was a little slow. In fairness, it was a very snowy night so they may have been shorthanded."

  • "The restaurant was excellent - great european ambience. We tried the foie gras combo appetiser and goat cheese salad. The steak was very good and salmon special was great. Service was very pleasant. We dinned around 8pm on a saturday with no issue of getting a table."

  • "The food here bears little resemblance to what one finds in France. The flammenkuche was a tasteless piece of frozen food-service pizza dough drowned in cheap cheese (chicago-style pizza?). Not authentic in the least. My companion had the fois gras terrine, which lacked all flavor except for an odd sour note vaguely tasting of pickle juice. I ordered the fish special of salmon on a bed of kale. The salmon was flavorless (guessing it was cheap farm-raised salmon) and very over-cooked and dry. Based on some other reviews I've read, overcooked and dry seems to be the standard here. We each ordered a glass of wine, a red and a white, both were mediocre. One positive note, the Sauternes by the glass was decent."
