A word from Sanctuary
Sanctuary, with its chandeliers and vaguely gothic ambiance - protected by gargoyles like the sanctuaries of Europe - is elegant, yet comfortable. It is meant to be a haven where food, service and ambiance please the senses. A fireplace warms cold nights - a patio with flowers and herbs celebrates summer. With thick limestone, rough timbers and ceiling beams dating back to the 1860's, it reminds you of that small romantic place you'd love to visit again.

Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."

Located one block from the Guthrie, it is the perfect place for dinner before or after a show.

We stopped in on Thursday night to try the 5-course tasting menu with paired wines. The wine was all excellent! The food was also very good and the chef presented a nice variety--from edamame hummus (delicious!) to chicken taquitos to beef tartar. Unfortunately, the service was spotty; for example, we waited almost 35 minutes between courses 2 and 3 and the server barely explained the wines that were paired with the food. He saved himself somewhat by bringing a second serving of the hummus, which we enjoyed with the beef tartar. We may go back--but probably won't try the tasting menu again.

This was a perfect night for my wife and I celebrating our wedding anniversary. Outstanding service (Michael) and the food and drinks were outstanding. The ambiance was really nice, as well. Not so loud like some restaurants where you could carry on a conversation. Not a big place - but long and narrow - which gave it an old world feel like you see in Europe. I'll be back!

Got the tasting menu. Wonderful mixture of textures, flavors, and aromas. The courses were very different, but refreshing and light enough to make it through the menu without being uncomfortably stuffed at the end. I like the feel of the oversized high back chairs.

I wanted to take my husband someplace special for our anniversary and Sanctuary turned out to be the perfect spot. The restaurant is quite small and intimate but since it was a Monday night it was not crowded. We were warmly greeted by what turned out to be one of the co-owners. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable, the wine list impressive. But best of all the food was creative and delicious. The chef clearly handpicks his ingredients and carefully plans each dish. Our appetizer, for example, came with lavender seeds, and other side elements with instructions from the chef how to combine them with the main part. We heard "oohs and ahhhs" from the diners around us as they tucked into their food. Even great vegetarian options

Hard to believe you are on Washington Avenue, downtown. The patio is so well screened in with vines and flowers you are cocooned from the stress around you. Parking is a breeze at the meters, but the adjacent private lot takes alot of time to just pay digitally. Chef is very creative with an excellent presentation, balance on the palate. Would highly recommend this as a special place to take someone special or a bunch of good friends.

Returned to the area after 30 yrs to revisit the Guthrie Theater. The Sanctuary was a great spot for dinner before the event. They respected our reservation and need to be at the theater and still served the tasting menu which I had expressed an interest in trying. Value is spectacular ($35) even if several items fall a little short. A tomato burrata salad had great ingredients but an organic sweet drizzle overpowered the tomato and did not compliment the other ingredients. An organic greens salad was ordinary and the beef short rib was very tasty but appeared to have been cooked and defrosted for the dinner. A very nice chocolate tart was good but why serve it with what seemed to be a cheap chocolate malted milk ball on the side?

Sanctuary is hands down my favorite restaurant in any city. With its ever changing menu you are always getting a new culinary adventure and the service is predictably outstanding. As far as I am concerned, the only reason to go to Sanctuary is its proximity to the Guthrie. The location and ambience are great, the bar service is excellent and $4 for parking is a bargain. The food, however, is expensive and disappointing. We tried the bone marrow appetizer, braised short ribs, Baja yellowtail and a steak. The steak was good, but the rest of the entrees were small and pretty tasteless. At about $27 per entree, it was a huge waste of money. I had a hard time picking a reason for recommending this restaurant - I selected scenic view because the interior is very pretty. There is also an outdoor eating area. Maybe I would go back to Sanctuary, but only for a cocktail, never the food.

We were looking for a dining spot close to the Guthrie, where we could get last minute reservations. Our server, Ariel, was very energetic and explained the menu quite well. The menu is a little daunting. I was looking for Japanese as the restaurant was described as serving a menu of American, Japanese and Mediterranean choices. Two of our party ordered the Mango Gaspacho and the Romaine Salad and they enjoyed both. Two of us split the Caprese style salad and the Meat and Cheese appetizer, which was also good. My son had the chicken and pasta in a bolognese sauce with NOT spicy Italian sausage, and cleaned his plate. The only thing I was surprised about, really was the noise level.

I have to be honest in saying only one dish I had prior to this time I wasn't crazy about, but still the food and drinks are always top notch. We were somewhat disappointed in the food. The salmon was not done as it should have been - understanding that it shouldn't be overcooked. The strip steak was fatty and chewy. Given the price of our entrees they were small. The meat and cheese tray appetizer was delicious. We were with friends from Duluth and were hoping to impress them with a great restaurant (we have been to the Sanctuary before). Don't know when or if we will go back.

We consider ourselves foodies and thought this looked like a fun place to try for dinner before a show at the Guthrie Theater. I ordered a steak that had a nice presentation, but the taste was just so-so and not what I expected from the most expensive item on the menu. Unfortunately the white fish my wife ordered was even worse. We talked to some friends afterwards and they had a similar experience. Nice location, service and ambience, but we will not be going back there. A nice place for a drink, but suggest skipping the meal.

Our party visited Sanctuary for the first time as part of an evening that included a performance at the Guthrie. The restaurant is about one block from the theater, with easy access to parking, and perfect for an early dinner before a show. The ambiance inside was warm, well-appointed, and visually appealing with exposed brick, open beams, hard wood floors, and rich upholstery. We loved the over-sized, high back dining chairs that gave you tremendous privacy at your table. Our server, Geneva, was exceptional, knowledgeable about the menu, descriptive of its items, always attentive, and never intrusive. The food was amazing and I highly recommend the tasting menu, which changes daily and offers inventive and flavorful dishes. Divine!

This was my first time at restaurant. We sat outside which was great. We did chef's tasting which is a good price but was a little disappointed as not all dishes were great. The heirloom and burrata salad was amazing but next time, I'll probably just order off menu, but I did like restaurant and , since tasting menu changes all the time, might give it a go again sometime. The service was outstanding and that really adds to a good restaurant in my opinion. Definitely will return.

We were completely happy with our appetizer, entrees, and wine selection. The food was "different" in a good, good way. The chef combined wonderful seasonal fruits with regular items to make something spectacular. I wouldn't have thought of lemon mashed potatoes, but they were great - that's just one example. If you're open to trying something new, this is a great play to go. Also, prices were moderate and servings an appropriate size. We'll be back!

Our server advised us, in an excess of detail, that we needed to order soon to meet the curtain rise. She repeated this advise the next two times she stopped at the table. It was as if she had forgotten that she informed us the first time. We did order. We waited, and waited--for about 30 minutes--before anything was served. My steak, which I ordered rare, had not yet reached that level of preparation. I am used to rare beef, the way a great steak is prepared in Tuscany, for instance. This was not an adequate product. The service provided more attitude that assistance. Out of habit, I paid the check with a 20% tip added. I regretted it before I got out the door.

Several of us had the 5-course tasting menu with a paired wine flight. Stuffed grape leaves were great. Watermelon soup was ok, but the weird little sweet bits in the bottom were slightly off-putting. Monkfish was underdone (rubbery is underdone, not "rare"), and the sauce was much, much too sweet. Tasted like brown sugar. A spicy Italian sausage in tomato sauce was very good, and a relief after all the sweet stuff. Tiramisu was well made, but again, too sweet! Lemon sorbet with it helped, but the tiramisu should stand on its own. I can get better out of the freezer case at Cosetta. Not as well made, but not so syrupy sweet. I expect we'll be back, but maybe choosing our own dishes. This place has done better in the past.
