  • Public Transit: Washington Avenue buses run in front of Sanctuary. Light rail and other buses stop near the Dome - less than a block South of (behind) Sanctuary.

  • Parking Details: Private lots flank the 903 building on both sides and are $4 for the evening. A public lot directly behind the building is $3 on non-Dome-event nights. The Guthrie Ramp is between the restaurant and the theater - directly across Washington Ave.
A word from Sanctuary
Sanctuary, with its chandeliers and vaguely gothic ambiance - protected by gargoyles like the sanctuaries of Europe - is elegant, yet comfortable. It is meant to be a haven where food, service and music please the senses. A fireplace warms cold nights - a patio with flowers and herbs celebrates summer. With thick limestone, rough timbers and ceiling beams dating back to the 1860's, it reminds you of that small romantic place you'd love to visit again.

Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."

Located one block from the Guthrie, it is the perfect place for dinner before or after a show.

  • "My husband and I live across the street from this awesome restaurant! A great experience starts from the minute we walk in there! The Maitre D' always has a smile on his face and always asks if we are headed to the Guthrie after dinner. We have had FANTASTIC service and the Chef does amazing things with the menu!! We had the Restaurant Week menu on Friday night and we are still raving about it today (Sunday)!! If you have a special occasion, I would highly recommend The Sanctuary. You will not be disappointed!!!"

  • "We arrived at 5:40 and had a 7:30 curtain call. The server respected the time limit without rushing through our courses. The food was amazing. I usually do not like stuffed grape leaves, I typically find them to be dried out, however, the ones they served for restaurant week were fantastic, my mom was licking the yogurt sauce off the plate. The burrata appetizer was served with marmalade and hibiscus salt, I could have eaten three servings of it. Check out the cocktail list, the bartender is clearly creative with a fine palette. I would go back again and again. Bonus, it was my birthday and I ordered Sambuca with dessert- they bought it for me, very nice, the gesture did not go unnoticed."

  • "Dined with 5 friends during restaurant week. Will definitely come back! The building is great - very pretty intimate restaurant. The food was great! We tried the chefs fixed price dinner and wine pairing - nice choices. The tiramisu was amazing!! Will definitely come back again and try the regular menu. Only 2 complaints - it was crowded, with several large tables, and extremely loud (could only hear people sitting next to me, but not across the table). I will come on a quieter evening. Second, our waitress didn't appear busy (standing chatting with co-workers several times), but not particularly attentive to our table. The food definitely made up for these."

  • "Sanctuary had been on our list of restaurants to try for a quite a while, I wish we would've gone sooner! The dinner was excellent and the service was top-notch. We started off with the meat & cheese plate along with the fruit & cheese starter. Both were terrific choices and set the stage for the dinner to follow. Most of us did the 5 course tasting menu and enjoyed every bit of it. My 2 favorite courses were the chicken with raspberry/Tabasco risotto and the caramelized fresh corn off the cob with peppers.. YUM! If you don't do the tasting menu I strongly recommend the Lobster bolognese, it was fantastic! I can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu!"

  • "We're late coming to the Chef Patrick bandwagon, having just discovered Sanctuary. A little too busy and much travel elsewhere is the excuse. We stopped in for dinner before the Guthrie on Saturday, with the river of rain in the road, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting Chef Patrick and the wonderful food he produces. The artichoke tartlets and their accompaniments were outstanding, as was the pork tenderloin dish and the special of beef spare ribs. We personally we not as crazy about the bone marrow, but can see why some like it. Coffee also was perfect. Service was terrific. A keeper - we will return."

  • "We parked at the Guthrie and walked over to the restaurant before the play. The outside patio is isolated from street noise and fumes - a fun place to eat. This is a restaurant for foodies who appreciate unusual combinations of ingredients. For instance, I had the chef's special: sea urchin with shrimp. Not everything is as adventuresome as that but all had interesting combinations of ingredients and garnishes. Our waitress was knowledgeable & helpful."

  • "My wife and I just returned from 3 weeks in Paris. We were there to sample the food (again) and enjoy the French people (very friendly as usual). I read an article on the Sanctuary and thought it would be a fitting reentry for us. The wait staff were very informative and like Paris not pushy. Although it is not on the drink menu they do offer Kir which is a great start for dinner. The food was cooked correctly and presented well. I appreciated the sauces that were new to me and complimentary to the dishes. The portions were appropriate and served with the right timing. I'll be back for more....."

  • "Food was fantastic, service was great. Plus they overlooked one hiccup - my wife booked the wrong night for the reservation. We came in and asked for our table and the man at the door said "oh, you were the ones who had the reservations last night". We checked our open table reservation, and believe it or not, we had booked the wrong night. He smiled at us and said, we can fit you in and seated us immediately. We were celebrating both my wife's and my sister in law's birthday, and they did not miss a beat. thank you to sanctuary for making us feel welcome despite our error and the food and service were exactly what we've come to expect from this top notch restaurant."

  • "We brought our friends (another couple) to the Sanctuary on Friday night. Warm welcome when we walked in the door. Our server was extremely helpful and offered her favorites. We started with a Proseco toast accompanied with the artichoke tartlets. Fabulous! All of us selected different dishes (pork tenderloin, marlin, lobster and chicken) perfect for sharing. Everyone enjoyed all the entrees. I was thrilled that this was a new restaurant for our friends. We will definitely be back in the future."

  • "After a 2-page review in the S-T, we had high expectations when we and another couple went for dinner last Friday night. Our server, was attentive and good-humored. We shared starters of smoked salmon carpaccio and the spinach tartlets - both pretty and delicious. Our friends enjoyed their pasta and barramundi. Unfortunately, husband's very dry chicken was sandwiched between waffles and bacon served with very dry coleslaw and a bag of Lay's Ruffles potato chips. My marlin was tough and dry. The salsa didn't help because it lacked substance, flavor and liquid. My husband's surprise birthday cake was tasty. The apple bread pudding was glutten-y. Parking was convenient and we enjoyed the patio dining. Noise, not an issue except for sirens."
