A word from Sanctuary
Sanctuary, with its chandeliers and vaguely gothic ambiance - protected by gargoyles like the sanctuaries of Europe - is elegant, yet comfortable. It is meant to be a haven where food, service and music please the senses. A fireplace warms cold nights - a patio with flowers and herbs celebrates summer. With thick limestone, rough timbers and ceiling beams dating back to the 1860's, it reminds you of that small romantic place you'd love to visit again.

Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."

Located one block from the Guthrie, it is the perfect place for dinner before or after a show.

  • "We came for my friends birthday and it was fantastic! The outside patio is adorable, our server was very friendly, fast and knowledgeable. They did something special to help celebrate my friends birthday which was sweet and the food was fantastic! Strawberry risotto, chocolate torte with pear and amaretto - yum!"

  • "Sanctuary is hands down my favorite restaurant in any city. With its ever changing menu you are always getting a new culinary adventure and the service is predictably outstanding. Their team bothers to remember your name, learn your preferences and they even spoil my dog on the patio when the possibility arises."

  • "As far as I am concerned, the only reason to go to Sanctuary is its proximity to the Guthrie. The location and ambience are great, the bar service is excellent and $4 for parking is a bargain. The food, however, is expensive and disappointing. We tried the bone marrow appetizer, braised short ribs, Baja yellowtail and a steak. The steak was good, but the rest of the entrees were small and pretty tasteless. At about $27 per entree, it was a huge waste of money. I had a hard time picking a reason for recommending this restaurant - I selected scenic view because the interior is very pretty. There is also an outdoor eating area. Maybe I would go back to Sanctuary, but only for a cocktail, never the food."

  • "I just made the reservation based on reading the web site and menu. We loved it and really want to go back and try their tasting menu."

  • "We were looking for a dining spot close to the Guthrie, where we could get last minute reservations. Our server, Ariel, was very energetic and explained the menu quite well. The menu is a little daunting. I was looking for Japanese as the restaurant was described as serving a menu of American, Japanese and Mediterranean choices. Two of our party ordered the Mango Gaspacho and the Romaine Salad and they enjoyed both. Two of us split the Caprese style salad and the Meat and Cheese appetizer, which was also good. My son had the chicken and pasta in a bolognese sauce with NOT spicy Italian sausage, and cleaned his plate. The only thing I was surprised about, really was the noise level."

  • "Went here for a business dinner and loved the food! The incorporation of seasonal fruits into a lot of the dishes was a unique twist and the services was excellent!"

  • "We had a very enjoyable dinner prior to attending an event at the Guthrie. Food and service was excellent. Parking is available at a nominal cost."

  • "All I can say is being there for 5th time, Sanctuary has never been disappointing. I have to be honest in saying only one dish I had prior to this time I wasn't crazy about, but still the food and drinks are always top notch. The menu had just changed that day and we got to have some of the most delicious chuck ribs and NY strip steak I have ever tasted. Thank you Sanctuary for another wonderful meal...we will be back!!"

  • "We were somewhat disappointed in the food. The salmon was not done as it should have been - understanding that it shouldn't be overcooked. The strip steak was fatty and chewy. Given the price of our entrees they were small. The meat and cheese tray appetizer was delicious. We were with friends from Duluth and were hoping to impress them with a great restaurant (we have been to the Sanctuary before). Don't know when or if we will go back."

  • "We consider ourselves foodies and thought this looked like a fun place to try for dinner before a show at the Guthrie Theater. I ordered a steak that had a nice presentation, but the taste was just so-so and not what I expected from the most expensive item on the menu. Unfortunately the white fish my wife ordered was even worse. We talked to some friends afterwards and they had a similar experience. Nice location, service and ambience, but we will not be going back there. A nice place for a drink, but suggest skipping the meal."

  • "Everything about our dinner at Sanctuary was outstanding, but I can't say enough about the barramundi. Almost licked the plate!"

  • "Our party visited Sanctuary for the first time as part of an evening that included a performance at the Guthrie. The restaurant is about one block from the theater, with easy access to parking, and perfect for an early dinner before a show. The ambiance inside was warm, well-appointed, and visually appealing with exposed brick, open beams, hard wood floors, and rich upholstery. We loved the over-sized, high back dining chairs that gave you tremendous privacy at your table. Our server, Geneva, was exceptional, knowledgeable about the menu, descriptive of its items, always attentive, and never intrusive. The food was amazing and I highly recommend the tasting menu, which changes daily and offers inventive and flavorful dishes. Divine!"

  • "This was my first time at restaurant. We sat outside which was great. We did chef's tasting which is a good price but was a little disappointed as not all dishes were great. The heirloom and burrata salad was amazing but next time, I'll probably just order off menu, but I did like restaurant and , since tasting menu changes all the time, might give it a go again sometime. The service was outstanding and that really adds to a good restaurant in my opinion. Definitely will return."

  • "We were completely happy with our appetizer, entrees, and wine selection. The food was "different" in a good, good way. The chef combined wonderful seasonal fruits with regular items to make something spectacular. I wouldn't have thought of lemon mashed potatoes, but they were great - that's just one example. If you're open to trying something new, this is a great play to go. Also, prices were moderate and servings an appropriate size. We'll be back!"

  • "We return to Sanctuary on occasions when we attend theater and musical performances in the area. Conveniently situated in Minneapolis' Arts section, the small galley style restaurant boasts ample parking and a spacious dining area. We've always been able to find interesting and satisfying items on the minimal menu and we are grateful that the chef listens positively to preparation requests."

  • "I love love love the chef's five course tasting dinner! Do not even ask what each course is and enjoy the surprise. The tasting with wine pairing is fun and I have yet to be disappointed with the wine pairing selections with each course."

  • "Our server advised us, in an excess of detail, that we needed to order soon to meet the curtain rise. She repeated this advise the next two times she stopped at the table. It was as if she had forgotten that she informed us the first time. We did order. We waited, and waited--for about 30 minutes--before anything was served. My steak, which I ordered rare, had not yet reached that level of preparation. I am used to rare beef, the way a great steak is prepared in Tuscany, for instance. This was not an adequate product. The service provided more attitude that assistance. Out of habit, I paid the check with a 20% tip added. I regretted it before I got out the door."

  • "This was our first visit to Sanctuary, and it was wonderful! I had the pork entree which was absolutely delicious. My partner had a fish dinner which was also done very nicely. We topped it off with an incredible chocolate tart desert. Along with a few glasses of nice wine, we had a wonderful evening."

  • "Several of us had the 5-course tasting menu with a paired wine flight. Stuffed grape leaves were great. Watermelon soup was ok, but the weird little sweet bits in the bottom were slightly off-putting. Monkfish was underdone (rubbery is underdone, not "rare"), and the sauce was much, much too sweet. Tasted like brown sugar. A spicy Italian sausage in tomato sauce was very good, and a relief after all the sweet stuff. Tiramisu was well made, but again, too sweet! Lemon sorbet with it helped, but the tiramisu should stand on its own. I can get better out of the freezer case at Cosetta. Not as well made, but not so syrupy sweet. I expect we'll be back, but maybe choosing our own dishes. This place has done better in the past."

One of my very favorite places. If you have not been, you will not be disappointed and more likely, thrilled with your choice."

  • "My husband and I live across the street from this awesome restaurant! A great experience starts from the minute we walk in there! The Maitre D' always has a smile on his face and always asks if we are headed to the Guthrie after dinner. We have had FANTASTIC service and the Chef does amazing things with the menu!! We had the Restaurant Week menu on Friday night and we are still raving about it today (Sunday)!! If you have a special occasion, I would highly recommend The Sanctuary. You will not be disappointed!!!"

  • "We arrived at 5:40 and had a 7:30 curtain call. The server respected the time limit without rushing through our courses. The food was amazing. I usually do not like stuffed grape leaves, I typically find them to be dried out, however, the ones they served for restaurant week were fantastic, my mom was licking the yogurt sauce off the plate. The burrata appetizer was served with marmalade and hibiscus salt, I could have eaten three servings of it. Check out the cocktail list, the bartender is clearly creative with a fine palette. I would go back again and again. Bonus, it was my birthday and I ordered Sambuca with dessert- they bought it for me, very nice, the gesture did not go unnoticed."

  • "This was our first at this restaurant as we were going to the Guthrie. It was fantastic. We had the 3 course special with grape leaves, vegetarian stir fry and tiramisu to die for. The tastes were and presentation were amazing. The service was as good as the food. We will definitely be back."

  • "Dined with 5 friends during restaurant week. Will definitely come back! The building is great - very pretty intimate restaurant. The food was great! We tried the chefs fixed price dinner and wine pairing - nice choices. The tiramisu was amazing!! Will definitely come back again and try the regular menu. Only 2 complaints - it was crowded, with several large tables, and extremely loud (could only hear people sitting next to me, but not across the table). I will come on a quieter evening. Second, our waitress didn't appear busy (standing chatting with co-workers several times), but not particularly attentive to our table. The food definitely made up for these."

  • "Although the service was friendly at Sanctuary, the food was unfortunately not up to what we would call 'foodie-worthy'. The bone marrow appetizer was not very spectacular as bone marrow is quite fattening and needs more herbs/spices to give it life...something that wasn't done well here. I was served essentially chicken (roasted) on waffles with a bag of Ruffles chips, which was quite a disappointment as the chicken wasn't well flavored and who serves chips at a so-called 'special' restaurant? My husband had the risotto; but it was quite watery and not the consistency of how risotto should be (mushy, but still retain the grain). We will keep trying restaurants in the Twin Cities...but it's unlikely we'll go back here."

  • "Had dinner here before a Guthrie show. Thoroughly enjoyed the food. The meat and cheese plate is thoughtfully composed, and artichoke tartlets are a good sharing item. We had a selection of small items along with a couple of cocktails. Highly recommend the Arrivederci Rome cocktail. Our server, Britta, was great. We look forward to returning for the weekday tasting menu."
