A word from Sanctuary
Sanctuary, with its chandeliers and vaguely gothic ambiance - protected by gargoyles like the sanctuaries of Europe - is elegant, yet comfortable. It is meant to be a haven where food, service and ambiance please the senses. A fireplace warms cold nights - a patio with flowers and herbs celebrates summer. With thick limestone, rough timbers and ceiling beams dating back to the 1860's, it reminds you of that small romantic place you'd love to visit again.

Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."

Located one block from the Guthrie, it is the perfect place for dinner before or after a show.

My duck breast was cooked just right and it was an excellent cut. I love escargot and, although I prefer the traditional snails in a garlic butter bath, they put it on toasted bread which was excellent as well. I tasted my companions' foie gras tacos and garlic, spinach and artichoke tartlets and they were also excellent. For dessert I had the dark chocolate tart and coffee. Excellent as well. If I have to nitpick, I would say that I like risotto soupy. It was certainly tasty, but the cheese tended to turn the rice into a mass (I'm just really picky about my risotto). Great service too. The menu is unique, but not weird. All dishes looked appealing. I'll have to come back for what I missed this time!

When a restaurant has such a limited menu it is critical to design it with something for everyone. At Sanctuary, the chef is overly fond of certain ingredients. These tend to show up in many dishes, so if for example mushrooms aren't your thing, you will be in bad shape here. The menu is short and changes regularly - read it carefully before reserving. Some things like cheeses aren't on the menu. The cheese selection is limited, actually there is no selection. You are given what they have. If stinky cheeses aren't your thing, you should probably call ahead to ask about the cheese selection. It's a shame, because the food is really excellent and beautifully presented. Working a little more flexibility into the menu would do wonders.

The dishes were characterized by somewhat strange combinations of ingredients. It was almost as if the chef was trying to prove he/she was the most innovative chef in the Twin Cities. Initially, service was good, but when we were in a rush to get to the Guthrie (we had previously mentioned our engagement) our server seemed to ignore us and we had no further contact with her. We finally asked the host to run our credit cards. He brought the bills back without a pen and it took us another few minutes to locate one (all personnel were busy with other diners). We finally sent our spouses (in high heels) off to the Guthrie while we stayed to sort out the bill payment.

The owner is present and acts as though he is the maître d. His staff gave him up as the owner. He is kind and very attentive. The staff are incredibly kind, attentive and most have been employed by the establishment since it's opening or soon after and it shows. Happy employees give great and happy service. We are from Dallas, and were treated like regulars! Great meal! We did the 5 or 6 course tasting-paired with wine or cocktails. They were both WONDERFUL! To me this is a must go to restaurant if you are in Minneapolis! Also awesome atmosphere in very old barn/warehouse. Clean, well decorated, beautiful, and quaint.

Wanted to try for a while. Set a reservation for 7:00pm. When I arrived, I was told it would be awhile as the "Theatre Crowd" never got done until around 7:15. Why would you allow a 7pm reservation if you know people won’t vacate until 7:15? We patiently waited, never being offered a drink menu or an Amuse-Bouche to appease us. Then a group of 4 came in at 7:10. They knew the Maître D and were immediately seated before my wife and I. Additionally, the table next to us was vacant for over an hour awaiting an 8pm reservation. Normally I go to nicer places for my anniversary, but thought I would give this quaint place a try. Food was fantastic, but the front of the house doesn’t do much to make you feel special.

Coming here is always a special treat. They really know how to host anyone, which speaks volumes about the establishment. Coming here on short notice we were expecting just another great meal, but the great service, in addition to wonderful menu items, puts it over the top and we go home with bigger smiles. Meat and cheese plate and Dolmas to start were great... along with the 2 cocktails we had, which hit the spot. Entrees of fish and pork were satisfying and playful. Great preparation and well balanced - you can tell a lot of execution goes behind the entire dish and components. Finished with the dessert trio and shots, which was a fun way to end. Great place and staff.

We have eaten several times before and have always enjoyed ordering off the menu. This past dinner we ordered the tasting menu and threw ourselves at the mercy of the chef. This well rewarded as no other chef has so much "fun" pairing food flavors, textures and interesting sides. The entrée of braised duck over coconut milk mashed potatoes was truly inspired. The wait staff are extremely knowledgeable of not only the food, but the wines served. They are also so friendly. This is just a great place to go!!!

We stopped in on Thursday night to try the 5-course tasting menu with paired wines. The wine was all excellent! The food was also very good and the chef presented a nice variety--from edamame hummus (delicious!) to chicken taquitos to beef tartar. Unfortunately, the service was spotty; for example, we waited almost 35 minutes between courses 2 and 3 and the server barely explained the wines that were paired with the food. He saved himself somewhat by bringing a second serving of the hummus, which we enjoyed with the beef tartar. We may go back--but probably won't try the tasting menu again.

I wanted to take my husband someplace special for our anniversary and Sanctuary turned out to be the perfect spot. The restaurant is quite small and intimate but since it was a Monday night it was not crowded. We were warmly greeted by what turned out to be one of the co-owners. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable, the wine list impressive. But best of all the food was creative and delicious. The chef clearly handpicks his ingredients and carefully plans each dish. Our appetizer, for example, came with lavender seeds, and other side elements with instructions from the chef how to combine them with the main part. We heard "oohs and ahhhs" from the diners around us as they tucked into their food. Even great vegetarian options

Hard to believe you are on Washington Avenue, downtown. The patio is so well screened in with vines and flowers you are cocooned from the stress around you. Parking is a breeze at the meters, but the adjacent private lot takes alot of time to just pay digitally. Chef is very creative with an excellent presentation, balance on the palate. Would highly recommend this as a special place to take someone special or a bunch of good friends.

Returned to the area after 30 yrs to revisit the Guthrie Theater. The Sanctuary was a great spot for dinner before the event. They respected our reservation and need to be at the theater and still served the tasting menu which I had expressed an interest in trying. Value is spectacular ($35) even if several items fall a little short. A tomato burrata salad had great ingredients but an organic sweet drizzle overpowered the tomato and did not compliment the other ingredients. An organic greens salad was ordinary and the beef short rib was very tasty but appeared to have been cooked and defrosted for the dinner. A very nice chocolate tart was good but why serve it with what seemed to be a cheap chocolate malted milk ball on the side?

As far as I am concerned, the only reason to go to Sanctuary is its proximity to the Guthrie. The location and ambience are great, the bar service is excellent and $4 for parking is a bargain. The food, however, is expensive and disappointing. We tried the bone marrow appetizer, braised short ribs, Baja yellowtail and a steak. The steak was good, but the rest of the entrees were small and pretty tasteless. At about $27 per entree, it was a huge waste of money. I had a hard time picking a reason for recommending this restaurant - I selected scenic view because the interior is very pretty. There is also an outdoor eating area. Maybe I would go back to Sanctuary, but only for a cocktail, never the food.

We were looking for a dining spot close to the Guthrie, where we could get last minute reservations. Our server, Ariel, was very energetic and explained the menu quite well. The menu is a little daunting. I was looking for Japanese as the restaurant was described as serving a menu of American, Japanese and Mediterranean choices. Two of our party ordered the Mango Gaspacho and the Romaine Salad and they enjoyed both. Two of us split the Caprese style salad and the Meat and Cheese appetizer, which was also good. My son had the chicken and pasta in a bolognese sauce with NOT spicy Italian sausage, and cleaned his plate. The only thing I was surprised about, really was the noise level.
