Diner Reviews
  • "We had made a reservation for Mother's Day few weeks in advance. Called morning of to confirm our arrival. Arrived and the table wasn't even set and ready for us. Quickly pulled tables together, ALL wobbly. Food was atrocious! Some dishes came without items it described on menu. Figured I would at least get a good cup of tea....my mistake. Served in lousy plastic cup. I make a better cup on a daily basis at home. Service was terrible. Had to request they serve the appetizer prior to our entrees. How can anyone run a business with such incompetent staff? I can't believe how lousy the food was. Safe your money and go somewhere else, there is plenty of competition in the area and strongly suggest consumers go elsewhere."

  • "The afternoon tea was overpriced and underwhelming, to say the least. And, added to that, I was chided by a waiter for using OpenTable to make my reservation, even though I had linked to OpenTable from their website! Save yourself the waste of time and money and the aggravation."

  • "Good food and nice servers; however, service was rather slow. Luckily they turned off the bright lights in the back where they market their items for sale - ruins the mood at night when bright lights are glaring at you. Great cocktails too."

  • "An excellent and extensive selection of tea. Our waitress, Stephanie was outstanding. We were not rushed in any way. I will definitely return."

  • "Very nice selection of teas and tea-inspired drinks. The food was good but not great."

  • "Wonderful selection of tea. Waitress very knowledgable of over 70 different teas. Came on Valentines day and enjoyed the wonderful special menu."

  • "Great food and cocktail list. No pressure to rush we sat for hours."

  • "Interesting concept of tea-related food and drinks. Drink menu is creative, combining various liquors with teas, the food menu is less interesting. Food is delicious, just fine, but lacking in excitement. Burgers, fish & chips, roast chicken, etc. Staff is caring and mostly efficient. The sanctuary atmosphere is a bit of an overpromise - it's a quiet-ish bar."

  • "I was very surprised at the quality of the food at Sanctuary. If I was a local, I would want to keep this place a secret for myself, but I hope they have to start turning people away. Extremely nice and accommodating. When I am back in the neighborhood, I will certainly return."

  • "Truffle mac 'n cheese was delish- my chicken dish, not so much. But the roasted vegetables were yummy!"

  • "We had a thanksgiving dinner here and the food was good and service was fantastic."

  • "Best thing about this place is the rich hot chocolate. The food wasn't that great though."

  • "This was a first visit for us and we didn't really know what to expect other than we liked the look of the menu. It turned out to be one of the best meals of our trip. Everything had a very fresh, home made feel about it, the presentation was flawless and the flavours delicious - the sausage starter was a dream. On top of that we enjoyed great service and had a chance to taste their unusual tea blends - complementary and with regular top ups. Highly recommended"

  • "What a GREAT find! Fairly reasonable prices, great ambiance, incredible service. I loved the menu - so inventive, diverse, healthy, tasty and interesting use of teas - LOVED IT. I had an incredible ceviche (done correctly) and salad, plus a delicious sample of chocolate dessert tea that made me order more. The wines are great and I will DEFINITELY be back. Loved it."

  • "Mac and Cheese was Amazing. Had a Dream about it. Would go there anytime just for that."

  • "The food was interesting (in a good way). However, the service was very slow and inattentive. We had only an hour for lunch and we had to wait about 20 minutes to get some attention from the waiter and order. And it's not like they were busy."

  • "Great location. Great happy hour. Only $4 a drink. The decoration is very cute. Food price is leaning the high side in compare with the potion of food we get. The Melt Brie and honey toast was amazing, the pita platter was ok. Scallop entree is fantastic, but for $24 an entree, you only got 3 scallop, and approx 8 spoon of rice... for that I think that is a bit pricy. But if you are a tea person.. the is the right spot!!"

  • "What a sweet place in SoHo. It was a rainy weeknight, and the place was practically empty. The service was still very attentive - but not rushed. The food was delicious (great for vegetarians), fresh, well plated, good flavors, and the ambiance was warm, and simple. Would definitely go again."

  • "I love Sanctuary's cocktails. Very original. Service was spotty. Head waiter was a little hyper."

  • "We add the special Easter Brunch and were really disappointed. We received the special menu through Opentable few days before our reservation, but no one suggested it to us when we arrived and we had a ask for it. The food was good. We had a mimosa, egg sandwich and omelets. But we were waiting for the pancakes to arrived and unfortunately they never did. Apparently they were not included even though our waitress didn't mention we had to choose. When we told us she got upset and never came back to our table, checked on us or even said 'goodbye' !!"

  • "don't go there , the service is terrible, I would say as bad as the food."

  • "Had to wait for a table for 40 min even thought we had a reservation through Open Table. Food arrived cold. Experience average. Would not return."

  • "This is a very small place. The brunch was good especially the vanilla pancakes. Since, tea is their "thing", take a few minutes to read their tea menu and try something different."
    Dined on 3/25/2012
  • "The bartender made all of the drinks from scratch a very fun little place. Definitely will be back."

  • "This place is a great find for brunch in SoHo! Don't be surprised when entering by the very small space. The tea menu is extensive, and I wanted to try everything on the food menu! The melted bri appetizer is a must, and everyone in my group loved their entrees. Will definitely return!"

  • "Food was good and the tea drinkers in our group were impressed with the offerings and presentation. Appreciated that we were not rushed off after our plates were cleared."

  • "Loved this place! We went for brunch on a Sunday - it was a bit cramped, but that was part of the charm. We had a great table by the window; everyone we interacted with on the staff was energetic and charming. It was a wonderful place for a special occasion we were celebrating - the food was amazing (I recommend the TRUFFLED CROQUE MONSIEUR - a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with truffle oil infused béchamel sauce!) - can't wait to go back!"

  • "Food was great, service was great, only complaint would be that we had reservations for 12:30 and we weren't sat until 1pm. However, the did provide free drinks and deserts for the inconvenience."
    Dined on 2/19/2012
  • "Initially I was disappointed because the room was so small and there were no tablecloths-- it looked like a deli. But the staff was friendly, the atmosphere relaxing, and the food was delicious. I would definitely go again."

  • "Reading a recommendation from Reserve29, I decided to try this "cozy" spot. I went with two of my friends and found it very interesting and unique. Its a small space but full of personality in it. I tried their mind over matter specialty tea, which was bitter for my taste but not bad. I also had their french toast, which was amazing and fresh. My friends had the chili soup and farmers omlet, which they finished the whole plate. Overall, very nice and quite spot for friends to gather and catch up."

  • "I had an 8AM breakfast reservation (for a business meeting) and the restaurant was NOT open. Some of the staff showed up (after 8) and could not get in. We went someplace else, and this place was still not open when I walked by 1.5 hours later."

  • "We had a party of 5 for brunch - really enjoyed the food (the crouque madame was excellent), bloody marys and mimosas. The service was friendly and fast. We lingered over conversation at a busy time and they did not rush us."

  • "Neighborhood Gem, Great Food, Good Service, Cool scene."

  • "We had the afternoon tea here. They had a delicious scone, and the sandwiches are creative and different from your traditional tea sandwiches. The dessert just consisted of shortbread cookies, which I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more of a variety of sweets. There is a lot of tea choices to choose from. Make sure you make a reservation for afternoon tea per their instructions, because we did and our food was ready pretty quickly."
