Diner Reviews
  • "We always go to the McKenzie town site for convenience however were in the vicinity so decided to eat at this restaurant. Great service, great food (as always)..... a good time. The decor is warm, subdued, and adds to the relaxed ambiance, to complete the very enjoyable dining experience. I cannot fathom the negative reviews by a couple of the other diners on this site. Great value as well."

  • "We were promptly greeted and courteously, the restaurant is a smaller space though it was not overly loud, very comfortable. The appetizers ordered by the table were a hit, we had the Prawns, the Samplers of Bruschetta & a Stuffed Mushroom. We had various pasta dishes that were met with unanimous approval . Service was well-timed and friendly. If I lived in this neighborhood I would likely be a regular."

  • "The menu is very limited so there is not much selection which is not always a negative if it means the food they do offer is well done. We ordered a pasta that was over cooked and over seasoned, the swordfish special which was not bad, and the beef tenderloin. The steak was not seasoned and was piled on top of two carrots a piece of undercooked yet wilted broccolini.(I am not sure how you manage that) and an over puréed spoonful of tasteless mash potatoes. The steak itself was tiny (maybe 5 oz. but I doubt it) and a bit fatty and tough. We left at 7:30ish and there were only 3 more tables occupied and I can see why. The food was poor quality and very over priced as a result. The only bright spot was the server. I would not return."

  • "Took my wife there for our anniversary -- didn't disappoint on any level! Our server was extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. Oh, and "Monday night pasta night" rocks!!"

  • "San Remo can be counted on for consistently good food and service. I go there for lunch with girlfriends and my teens for a special lunch. I can have a very nice lunch for well under $20 (glass of wine not included) It is quiet enough for easy conversation. I hate restaurants where the music overwhelms. Tables are spread out enough that you are not forced to listen to others conversations."

  • "Its rare that I can choose anything on the menu as I have a gluten allergy. They are incredibly accommodating and the food is so good."

  • "We had dinner on a Wednesday evening and took advantage of the 1/2 price wine! The food was very good and we had the best service! Very enjoyable and highly recommended. They have many gluten-free options as well."

  • "Unfortunately this wasn't the best experience. My second time there and the first was much better. My daughter had the chicken dish which was soaked in oil. The antipasti platter had what appeared to be 'old' prosciutto and the Caesar salad leaves had to be cut with a knife. Waited for drinks and had to ask the Hostess and drinks brought to the table were incorrect. It was a busy Friday night, so can understand that part, but all in all I'm not sure if I'd return. Thank you. Elaine."

  • "Loved the food. Love the seating and the fact that the noise level is really controlled. I feel refreshed after dining, not dead tired because I had to shout my conversation. I think the little fabric and the leather chairs help with acoustics. Good service - not intrusive, but attentive. See you soon!"

  • "Wow! What a wonderful place to dine! Went to San Remo in Garrison Gate on a Monday night which is "Pasta Night" where all pasta dishes are $10. I don't know why this place was not busier as we had a great meal at a great price. Antipasto platter to start, followed by mushroom linguine (fantastic) and my dining companion had the lasagna that she could not say enough about. Lily, our server was very attentive but not intrusive and when she heard that it was my friends birthday, she offered her complimentary tiramisu. Because we had no room, it was declined but surprisingly, she packaged a piece up for her to take home. We actually felt valued as customers. I intend to go back and try other dishes. Wonder if I can ask to sit in Lily's section?"

  • "This was the second time I believe I have enjoyed lunch at San Remo. On Monday I found the service to be absolutely great and I took the server's advice and had the soup special. It was fantastic and it was served hot (unlike other places where it arrives microwave-zapped and lukewarm). My guest and I found our main courses to be generous and mouth-watering. We shall rfeturn to San Remo as it was so impressive in every respect."

  • "made same day reservations on line for 2 at 7pm. arrived after 2 large parties. needless to say, our meals took WAY too long to arrive, even though our server kept saying it would be right out. one table actually walked out, which is what we should have done. when our food arrived, the portions were very small. my friend ordered the veal spc, and had 2 wafer thin pieces of veal. my lamb was ok, but arrived with 3 tiny potatoes. we wondered if they were running short. they should have offered to comp, at least, our $5 water."

  • "Really great food and service, as usual...and thanks very much for taking care of my girlfriend who is Celiac...you guys (well, ladies) are the BEST!!!!! By the way, it was fun to see Lana (Manager) just putting up the commendation (Diners Choice Award 2014, I believe) sticker on the window as we were arriving...award WELL deserved!!!!"

  • "i like it when i can't decide between a whole bunch of great options on the menu. i didn't have that problem at san remo… some items, like the gnocchi poutine and shrimp/veal sounded great and were very good, but there really was nothing else that caught my eye. i've been here on a few occasions as i live within walking distance, including their sunday pasta special night, pastas $10. sounds like a deal but the three options ordered at our table were all bland and uninspiring- i could do better at home. by the time 2 glasses of wine are included the bill is always moderate to hefty. with the limited menu options and the price tag this will remain a couple of times per year type place despite its convenient location."

  • "Service was a little slow, and things were forgotten. The table beside me got the wrong desert as well. I've worked in busy resturants both front and back of house so I understand it can get hectic, but the night didn't even seem that busy for the service to be as slow as it was. Also I'm very patient and was planning om havong a nice long dinner but this was just poor slow service."

  • "Monday nites this lovely little restaurant has a $10 deal on pasta. Mine was really good size with a lot of chicken and artichokes, well blended with pesto and delicious. My husband chose the spaghetti with chicken and he had less than half the amount of chicken that I had....but it still tasted delicious. My friend had the mushroom special and it was a good tasty portion too. There were only two other tables that night as it was bitterly cold so the place was quiet and the staff very attentive....not sure what it would be like on a busy night."

  • "My recent lunch with my family was a pleasant experience. The restaurant is easily accessible with street parking available. Our server was attentive but unobtrusive and the food was very good. The limited lunch menu offers a good choice of salads and pasta dishes. We will likely meet here again for future lunches."

  • "This restaurant is a very good one - close to be outstanding. The service and the quality of the food are commendable. It has a pleasant environment and is also a reliable neighbourhood dining spot. My wife and I enjoyed our dinner and appreciated the friendly (without being intrusive) attention of our server. We shall return to Sand Remo, for sure."

  • "Service was terrible. Food was either over powering or totally bland. Unfortunate as this is one of very few licensed kid friendly restaurants in the neighborhood. We won't be going back."

  • "Overall, a great neighborhood restaurant. We have dined here many times, pasta, salads, most menu items, are all great value. This last meal, the tenderloin was very flat, which gave it a different flavour. It was NOT what you would class as a good cut of beef. The service was freindly, efficient and accomodating. Will continue to use this restaurant for a good dining experience."

  • "San Remo is truly a Neighbourhood Gem! We were very pleased with our meal selections, particularly the mushroom appetizer and the mixed green salad. The caprese salad was delicious but it left me wanting more of the cheese. Our main course, the Atlantic Salmon over Lobster Risotto, was perfect and well balanced. The dessert was also very good. All in all, a wonderful Italian Restaurant with an intimate feel."

  • "Went to San Remo in Garrison woods on a Thursday evening. Small open restarant just south of Marda Loop. Service was very slow to get started as there were only 2 wait staff and the one covering our table was in the back for 10 min after we arrived. Bruscetta is average, caprese salad average, tomato soup was great. Caesar salad had some bacon in it that was heavenly. Son had short rib and that was tender and tasty, Pasta with sausage was average, Mushroom pasta was very good. You get the idea, some average, some very good. Presentation of the food is just average as well, Will not likely rush back."

  • "What a great way to end the weekend (yay...no cooking!!!). From the moment we walked in and were greeted with a smiling face and taken to our table, everything was so relaxing. The service was extremely friendly and conscientious (re: my girlfriend's Celiac allergy) and the food was yummy, of course (and the triple chocolate cake...HOW can something 'that' good be gluten-free??). Madison...we really appreciate you not just saying 'I think so'...but checking with the kitchen to confirm what we were asking about was gluten-free. It's this kind of service that keeps us coming back (and the reverse of what keeps us away from other restaurants). Lana...you and your staff ROCK!!! Keep up the GREAT work! Thanks very much, A & D :)"

  • "The lighting was way to bright for 8pm at night. My chair was really uncomfortable. My guest was sat near the outside path of the servers, so it was a bit tight for "comfortable dining." (He hung out past the ledge we were up against. It appeared awkward, as he was a bigger fellow.) However we had a delightful server who made our night."

  • "The atmosphere and location are great but our lunchtime salads were OK. Between the five of us we tried the chicken, steak, and salmon salads. Some bread or buns might have been nice as I was hungry when I got home!"

  • "This was our first visit to San Remo. Food was okay. Best thing we had was the beet salad, which you wouldn't really call a beet salad because there was only 1 small beet in the salad. Atmosphere was nice as you could carry on a conversation without having to shout. Two servers for the entire restaurant. Good thing because it wasn't packed, just busy. Won't return."

  • "My wife and I went to San Remo on New Years Eve (earlier in the evening, not the New Years special - perhaps they were focussed on that?) and left very disappointed. We live nearby and have dined here many times and noticed right away that the menu has changed and all of our favourites are gone (the saltimbocca, involtini etc.) replaced by more "basic" entrees. I chose the Prawn & Crab Fideo which was basically spaghetti with peas and two prawns. There were some very small crab bits but if there was an ounce there I would be surprised. My wife had the lamb rack which was good but overwhelmed with the chutney and underwhelmed with the very small amount of potato and vegetable. Sad to say we will not be going back any time soon."

  • "This is our third time dining here and I have to save it's really just OK. Some items are very good and others aren't. The ahi tuna with olive tepenade was a miss. You couldn't taste the tuna, only the olives. The duck "donut" was terrific. But the beet salad was truly disappointing. We chose to share the salad and it was brought to us on two separate plates, which was nice. But between the two of us there wasn't a whole beet. We each had two small slices of beet. The entrees were very good, however. As a neighbour of ours says, "It's very hit or miss.""

  • "I have dined a San Remo a few times and each time the service and food have been fantastic. I had the lunch special Salmon and salad paired with a glass of Chardonnay. My friend and I shared the Pana Cotta for dessert. Both courses were outstanding."

  • "I have gone to this restaurant several times...service is always excellent and the quality of food is always superb. It truly is a neighbourhood gem that more people in the area should know about. It has little touches that make it a great experience."

  • "The appetizer was not made with fresh mussels. They were fishy tasting a shirvilied. Salt does not disguise bad food. My vegetarian entree was dry and over cooked. All in all it was negative experience. Too bad, because at firts blush it seemed like a nice little place with reasonable prices."

  • "Six of us had a very good lunch at San Remo. The service was very good as was the food. One small criticism is that the salad dressing has too much salt. I have mentioned this to the cook before."
