Samuels is a regular for us when we want a quality night out. The food is very good and has a bit of character without going into the foodies only realm. The staff are very personable and tend to remember you from visit to visit. The ambience is very nice though on a busy night the bar and the seats around it can be very busy.

Very nice food. It is NOT a buffet. Included are breads, coffee, juice, appetizer, and entree. The shrimp cocktail appetizer included six delicious large shrimp. The Bloody Mary was OK ($7.50). Mimosa and Champagne are also extra at $7.50 each. It was a superior California Champagne. This is not a good choice if you're in a hurry (it is Sunday brunch, after all).

This is probably the 5th or 6th time I've had dinner at Samuels and I find the restaurant to be good but inconsistent. Tonight, the kitchen seemed slow and the service was challenged as a result. Our server was trying her hardest but I think the kitchen was overwhelmed by three large groups that all arrived at roughly the same time. Food was solid but I have had better meals here in the past. Our group enjoyed our meal but felt that it could have been better. I will come back as the restaurant has a good atmosphere and is convenient, hopefully I'll come back on a better service night.

Samuels is a nice find tucked in the neighborhood. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Food was well prepared and quite good. Ambience was classic casual and comfortable. However, we were seated in the dining area with the bar and the acoustics were not good; very loud group seated at the bar made it difficult to have conversation at our table. Also our food preparation seemed to take a long time. Nonetheless, I would recommend Samuels for all the positive reasons listed and attribute the 2 small negatives to just the a funky night!

Named for Samuel Phillips, the founder of Phillips Academy, and located on the campus, Samuels is a good restaurant that offers good food in a nice setting. We were seated in the bar room, which was quite nice with old style wood panelling. We liked the fact that even in the bar room, the dining area was separated by a 4foot wall from the bar. We also liked that the two TVs on the bar wall were on mute with dialogue scrolling across the screens making it possible to have conversation at the table on a Saturday evening.

Food was great, but dining near bar was dreadful! Asked to be moved, were not able to accommodate this People standing in bar area overflowing to dining area, when front lounge was completely empty, would have made everyone happy if management wld ask the people standing and drinking to move into lounge area! Had to shout to others at the table. Poor management!

The food here is really worth the trip, but the last few times I have found the wait staff to be overburdened with tables - so even getting water, drinks and bread can be quite a wait. If you can avoid the busy times of the week, you will have a lovely meal and can converse in a normal tone. If it is full, the noise level can disturb an otherwise excellent meal.

I've wanted to go to Samuel's for 10 years but never got to it until recently to celebrate Mother's Day with my mom. The location is very easy to get to with on street parking in a beautiful setting. Lunch was very reasonably priced and featured classic traditional New England fare and was delicious. It was a great experience and I'm glad I finally went to Samuel's!

The food here is incredible. I've been twice now and everything I've had has been near perfection. The Lobster Crepes are possibly the best thing I've ever eaten. Our waiter was a very nice young man who was very patient with my frustratingly difficult grandmother. The only complaint I have is that there were maybe two other tables when we came in and our appetizers took about 45 minutes to come out and the main course took close to an hour and a half. I don't know if there was something going on in another room that we didn't know about. It wasn't a huge deal because we were talking and enjoying each other's company, but it was very strange that it took so long. Our visit totaled 2 hours an we left immediately after we finished eating.

First time in the Andover Inn in some years. Pleased to see some modernization and a good lunch menu. Food was very good and reasonable prices assured good value. Clam chowder was clearly home made and certainly recommend that and the Lobster & Wild Mushroom crepes. Very satisfied. Also took a look at the Addison Gallery of American Art across the street. Free admission - Another local neighborhood gem.

A last minute decision to eat out at an elegant yet casual dining atmosphere in town proved to be the perfect decision Saturday night. Great food, warm atmosphere and wonderful service. This week-end, I dined at Samuel's and felt letdown. The service was adequate; at the beginning, the waiter was prompt. Later, his interest began to wane. The dishes were mediocre and too rich. The person(s) creating the dishes should strike a balance with the seasoning of the dishes. Overall, my dining experience was a fair one.

There's no denying - the food was superb. There were not very many people in the restaurant when we were there, on an early Sunday evening, but we felt somewhat neglected by our waitperson, who was (he said) kept busy attending to a private party. There was also an issue with some defective equipment at the bar, which kept howling periodically, and was somewhat distracting, as it drowned out conversation. We were assured this would be fixed, just not while we were there. Overall a somewhat mixed experience.

For many years this has been a favorite of ours, particularly for special occasions. It has changed hands and undergone restoration over the last few years, so it is no longer the restaurant we remember. But at our last visit, we were pleasantly surprised that in many ways, it was just as pleasant and enjoyable. My wife had the haddock and I had the beef filet; both were deliciously prepared and cooked exactly as requested. The waiter who served us in the lounge for drinks and later at table was courteous, knowledgable and friendly.

Dinner with hubby for celebratory event. Service good but not outstanding. Food tried to be gourmet but did not balance well-the crab-orange dressing on the bland haddock was too sweet and over powered the fish. The pork tasted left over to me and the bourbon sauce was ok but not my favorite. I would go again but would choose other meals. Was ok, but did not Wow me like I thought it would.

We wanted a sophisticated place to stop after going into the Addison Gallery on the grounds of Phillips Andover Academy, and Samuel's is right there! They have renovated the whole Inn in the last few years. It is a dark wood, long bar, intimate tables for 4 / 6 and more available. The service was friendly and timely. The food was great. Fish, rabbit, beef, with salad and plated with tender vegetables. The bar could lose the TV (last refuge of those that can converse). Other than that, this is the second time for me, fourth for my wife. We love it

The Andover Inn has been around for a long time. Tucked into Phillips Academy, it's been a "posh" place for parents of children attending this prestigious boarding school. The dining room used to be over-stuffed elegance (think old-school), and now has been made-over into a contemporary eatery. Sleek and lovely. The food for lunch had just the right amount to choose from - and all of it was delicious! Well done!

I had not been to The Andover Inn restaurant in years. It was a nice surprise. The meals were great. One of my guests was a little disappointed that the turkey sandwich (the sandwich of the day) was deli meat versus sliced turkey. Otherwise, I would have given five stars. I came to Samuels with four guests none of which had ever been there before. Overall we had a great dining experience but a very odd start. We arrived at 12:30 and no one was at the hostess station. I had to add one guest and she took a chair from the lobby even though the dining room had plenty. Most ordered water but one guest ordered a diet pepsi. The waiter took the cup from the table and went to fill it with the Pepsi.

    Dined on 2/16/2014
We like the Andover Inn for special occasions as a couple, but had never tried to do that at brunch. In retrospect, we weren't seated in the right place for a meal that was supposed to be at least a little romantic, on Valentine Weekend. We were next to a family with little children, across from a pair of people with a laptop who were doing some sort of task, and across from the bar TV with the Olympics--a seduction of the wrong sort! We just didn't think to ask for seating in the adjoining room (though perhaps that was a private party). It was a friendly, casual, atmosphere--it's just not what we were expecting from prior experience at dinner and from the fine-dining environment.

So to start we got there about 30 minutes early with the intent of having a drink at the bar, took us 15 minutes to get a drink, after getting the drink I asked could we be seated based on half of the dining room tables being empty. I got a stunned look form the maitra D, we waited another 15 minutes. Service was friendly, scatter, slow, confused and down right frustrating based. I asked for bread and was told that "mmm, I'm not sure I think we have may be out". Now for the good, the food was great when it got there, both myself and my date thoroughly enjoyed the food, the quality was excellent and flavors superb. I just wish the service met the same or even close to the same standard.

We went for our Valentine's Day lunch. Excellent drink and wine menu. Tasty food, with respectable portions, but the menu is limited at lunch to lunch type food--soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza. Pleasant place, quiet, upscale feel--seems like it attracts the "ladies who lunch" crowd; nothing wrong with that--I might even put myself in that category, except on Valentine's Day. Great location opposite the Addison Gallery, which is why we chose it. I had been there once before with a friend.

Only the bar menu was available (due to a snowstorm). Service was slow, considering the place was almost empty. My Samuel's burger and fries was decent, but my spouse's pork dish was small, full of fat, and was served with nothing else. Also, when I made the reservation, I mentioned that it was our anniversary. No one on staff acknowledged that. Although I'd like to see what this place is like when they have the full menu available, I probably won't.

As a customer of Samuel's for years, it is one of my favorite 'go to' choices. We've had wonderful Saturday lunches, business functions and evening dinners with friends. The menu is varied/creative - the lobster crepes are amazing! The bar is welcoming and often entertaining with great servers. We introduced a new couple to Samuel's Sunday before visiting the Addison Art Gallery next door (a must see!). We found the only menu option was buffet brunch and settled in for the experience. The food, although plentiful and beautifully plated, was average. The drinks were terrific (as always). The waitress, initially attentive, disappeared and upon asking for her - found that she had been assigned to a downstairs function as well.

The food was delicious. My only issue was the waiter did not seem to know the menu. More importantly, after I identified a dairy allergy, she brought bread that was made with cheese. She didn't identify it as having cheese in it and it didn't look like it did. I feel that if she knew her menu better, this would not have happened.

We arrived to a hostess with a glum look who didn't even smile. We waited 45 minutes for our starter and one hour after that our main meal which arrived cold. The waiter returned it to the kitchen and brought it back in 10 minutes still cold. He said the kitchen was busy...we got there at 6:30 pm and the restaurant was empty?! We ordered two bottles of very expensive wine for the table and by the time the meal came 2 hours later it was obviously gone. We served our own wine except for the first pour. There was not an apology by the manager or any adjustment to our bill We were so looking forward to finding a new place but it didn't happen. I would NEVER go back again!
