Diner Reviews
  • "There's no denying - the food was superb. There were not very many people in the restaurant when we were there, on an early Sunday evening, but we felt somewhat neglected by our waitperson, who was (he said) kept busy attending to a private party. There was also an issue with some defective equipment at the bar, which kept howling periodically, and was somewhat distracting, as it drowned out conversation. We were assured this would be fixed, just not while we were there. Overall a somewhat mixed experience."

  • "We had an excellent meal in a lovely atmosphere. The service was also very good"

  • "For many years this has been a favorite of ours, particularly for special occasions. It has changed hands and undergone restoration over the last few years, so it is no longer the restaurant we remember. But at our last visit, we were pleasantly surprised that in many ways, it was just as pleasant and enjoyable. My wife had the haddock and I had the beef filet; both were deliciously prepared and cooked exactly as requested. The waiter who served us in the lounge for drinks and later at table was courteous, knowledgable and friendly."

  • "Dinner with hubby for celebratory event. Service good but not outstanding. Food tried to be gourmet but did not balance well-the crab-orange dressing on the bland haddock was too sweet and over powered the fish. The pork tasted left over to me and the bourbon sauce was ok but not my favorite. I would go again but would choose other meals. Was ok, but did not Wow me like I thought it would."

  • "We wanted a sophisticated place to stop after going into the Addison Gallery on the grounds of Phillips Andover Academy, and Samuel's is right there! They have renovated the whole Inn in the last few years. It is a dark wood, long bar, intimate tables for 4 / 6 and more available. The service was friendly and timely. The food was great. Fish, rabbit, beef, with salad and plated with tender vegetables. The bar could lose the TV (last refuge of those that can converse). Other than that, this is the second time for me, fourth for my wife. We love it"

  • "Went for Sunday Brunch for my sister's birthday. Food was really delcious, great selection of both breakfast and lunch choices. Salmon was amazing, went back for seconds. Price tag was a little hefty, $35 for brunch is a little steep, but good for a special occassion."

  • "We go here regularly. One weekday evening we just wanted a burger and a salad. We decided to split a large caesar salad which is $10 but when the bill came we found they had charged us for 2 small salads (only $2, I know. But annoying). Then the burgers...they were pretty thin and fairly tasteless--even with the sautéed onions and mushrooms on top. Also, a layer of grease on the burger didn't help matters. It was definitely not a $13 burger, for sure, but I am more annoyed it wasn't good or great. Not up to par for Samuel's. Don't like writing a bad review for them because I love what they are doing in general and wish them much success. Success is in the details and they should be able to do a good burger. Hope it was an off night."

  • "Had a small and loud group in the bar that ruined it. Too loud. Waiter told of noise level and said that nothing could be done. Management in plain view. It would seem reasonable for the manager to intervene since the bar and restaurant are 1. The noise level was off the charts."

  • "Good food - nice choices. The prices for lunch were pretty moderate, the restaurant itself is lovely. Worht the trip!"

  • "The Andover Inn has been around for a long time. Tucked into Phillips Academy, it's been a "posh" place for parents of children attending this prestigious boarding school. The dining room used to be over-stuffed elegance (think old-school), and now has been made-over into a contemporary eatery. Sleek and lovely. The food for lunch had just the right amount to choose from - and all of it was delicious! Well done!"

  • "wicked, after our long drive we almost left because we could not find parking...fortunately a man who was leaving led us to his unauthorized space and suggested we take it...better than nothing!"

  • "I had not been to The Andover Inn restaurant in years. It was a nice surprise. The meals were great. One of my guests was a little disappointed that the turkey sandwich (the sandwich of the day) was deli meat versus sliced turkey. Otherwise, I would have given five stars. I came to Samuels with four guests none of which had ever been there before. Overall we had a great dining experience but a very odd start. We arrived at 12:30 and no one was at the hostess station. I had to add one guest and she took a chair from the lobby even though the dining room had plenty. Most ordered water but one guest ordered a diet pepsi. The waiter took the cup from the table and went to fill it with the Pepsi."

  • "We went for our Valentine's Day lunch. Excellent drink and wine menu. Tasty food, with respectable portions, but the menu is limited at lunch to lunch type food--soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza. Pleasant place, quiet, upscale feel--seems like it attracts the "ladies who lunch" crowd; nothing wrong with that--I might even put myself in that category, except on Valentine's Day. Great location opposite the Addison Gallery, which is why we chose it. I had been there once before with a friend."

  • "We like the Andover Inn for special occasions as a couple, but had never tried to do that at brunch. In retrospect, we weren't seated in the right place for a meal that was supposed to be at least a little romantic, on Valentine Weekend. We were next to a family with little children, across from a pair of people with a laptop who were doing some sort of task, and across from the bar TV with the Olympics--a seduction of the wrong sort! We just didn't think to ask for seating in the adjoining room (though perhaps that was a private party). It was a friendly, casual, atmosphere--it's just not what we were expecting from prior experience at dinner and from the fine-dining environment."

  • "Despite a reservation, we were put in the Bar which was quite noisy and not ideal for a romantic dinner. Other than that the service and food was fine, the Caesar salad tasted as if the vegetables where not very fresh. The entrees, Duck and Haddock were excellent."

  • "So to start we got there about 30 minutes early with the intent of having a drink at the bar, took us 15 minutes to get a drink, after getting the drink I asked could we be seated based on half of the dining room tables being empty. I got a stunned look form the maitra D, we waited another 15 minutes. Service was friendly, scatter, slow, confused and down right frustrating based. I asked for bread and was told that "mmm, I'm not sure I think we have may be out". Now for the good, the food was great when it got there, both myself and my date thoroughly enjoyed the food, the quality was excellent and flavors superb. I just wish the service met the same or even close to the same standard."

  • "Food was good but service was slow. It took almost half an hour for us to get our drinks. Dining room was very loud."

  • "Only the bar menu was available (due to a snowstorm). Service was slow, considering the place was almost empty. My Samuel's burger and fries was decent, but my spouse's pork dish was small, full of fat, and was served with nothing else. Also, when I made the reservation, I mentioned that it was our anniversary. No one on staff acknowledged that. Although I'd like to see what this place is like when they have the full menu available, I probably won't."

  • "As a customer of Samuel's for years, it is one of my favorite 'go to' choices. We've had wonderful Saturday lunches, business functions and evening dinners with friends. The menu is varied/creative - the lobster crepes are amazing! The bar is welcoming and often entertaining with great servers. We introduced a new couple to Samuel's Sunday before visiting the Addison Art Gallery next door (a must see!). We found the only menu option was buffet brunch and settled in for the experience. The food, although plentiful and beautifully plated, was average. The drinks were terrific (as always). The waitress, initially attentive, disappeared and upon asking for her - found that she had been assigned to a downstairs function as well."

  • "The food was delicious. My only issue was the waiter did not seem to know the menu. More importantly, after I identified a dairy allergy, she brought bread that was made with cheese. She didn't identify it as having cheese in it and it didn't look like it did. I feel that if she knew her menu better, this would not have happened."

  • "We arrived to a hostess with a glum look who didn't even smile. We waited 45 minutes for our starter and one hour after that our main meal which arrived cold. The waiter returned it to the kitchen and brought it back in 10 minutes still cold. He said the kitchen was busy...we got there at 6:30 pm and the restaurant was empty?! We ordered two bottles of very expensive wine for the table and by the time the meal came 2 hours later it was obviously gone. We served our own wine except for the first pour. There was not an apology by the manager or any adjustment to our bill We were so looking forward to finding a new place but it didn't happen. I would NEVER go back again!"

  • "Surprisingly good food. Would be a great place to graba drink and a bite to eat after work. Small and busy, went in a Thursday night with my boyfriend. Had lamb chops/lollipops for appetizer, different but good. An after work crowd was there, but again, not a bad experience."

  • "The food and service were excellent for the Sunday brunch. We've had good experiences for lunch and dinner, too. We live in the town and I would say this is one of the best restaurants, especially for a special occasion."

  • "We were here on Saturday night during the playoffs so the bar was active. The salmon was delicious and my husband enjoyed his lamb shank. Would have given it one more star if the waitress had not brought my husband the wrong wine which he kindly drank anyway. Ask for a table away from the bar if you prefer a quiet dinner."

  • "My so-called diver scallop plate consisted of four small scallops, probably two halved originals. But lots of risotto to make up for the embarrassing portion of fish. No vegetable on the plate, another disappointment. If you want to pay $25 for this oversalted and underwhelming dish, be advised to try something else, such as the short rib dish, which was much more substantial and attractively presented, yet visibly greasy. Appetizers, salads and desserts were adequate. The hostess who greeted us was spiritless, but fortunately the waitstaff was friendly and attentive. Overall neither the experience nor the food was remarkable."

  • "Christmas eve dinner. Food was good but waitress was not. She passed the table several times before I finally had to ask her to refill my water glass. I would have order another glass of wine but didn't bother. Same thing with coffee at the end of the meal. I cup and then we never saw her again. After we had finished everything we had to wait another 15 minutes before she came back into the dining area so we could get our check. The place was not packed - there were empty tables. We normally really enjoy Samuels - great food and ambiance and usually good service. We didn't get the guy we normally get."

  • "Bar service was absolutely terrible. Same for alcohol served at table. Food is tasty, well prepared and looks good. Wide variety. Service continues to be poor and we will not be going back. Never see a manager helping out where needed, waiter not moving fast enough and hard to find. Too bad-it's a great venue and the food is great."

  • "Had lunch at Samuel's before walking across the street to the terrific Addison Gallery. The restaurant is intimate and gentile, without being stuffy. I had a generously portioned flatbread with pork, goat cheese, cranberry compote, and fried onions. Very tasty! My companion had the soup and sandwich combo and was equally impressed. The service was very good, and the atmosphere was low key and convivial. Definitely a nice, light lunch experience at an otherwise upscale eatery."

  • "First the good: our waitress was remarkably quick to suggest items our questions hinted we'd like, including customized entrees which were not on the menu, and what the kitchen sent out was delightful. She'd done an extraordinary job of communicating what we'd really like to eat, and they'd done an equally good job of delivering. But we felt neglected, if not abandoned. How long should one wait before asking the ETA for the appetizers, and then the entrees? Was the bread coming? Water glasses? I suspect there was some confusion about the roles of waiter and busser, and we got left out. The food and ambiance might justify the price, which was very high, but the service did not. The food was really good, but it was a disappointing experience."

  • "My husband and I recently dined at Samuel's as it was close to our twins' daycare and they were having a special night out event there. We assumed that it would just a quick bite spot where the food would be ok for the convenience and location. However, we were pleased to find that the place was nicely furnished, staff was pleasant and the food was excellent! We will definitely return and recommend to others!"

  • "This was our 2nd visit to Samuel's and the food and service was just as good as the 1st time which is the reason we returned. The food is wonderful and the wine selection is awesome. We dined with relatives who were pleasantly surprised and they as well as my husband and I will definitely be back. I would recommend making a reservation. Once word gets out you will be hard pressed to find a seat in the dining room or at the bar."

  • "We were seated right away. The decor and atmosphere were very comfortable and warm. Our server was very helpful and attentive to our needs. The variety of drinks was excellent. My vodka martini was top notch. We all raved about our dinners. The coconut Creme' broulee was the best I have ever had. This was one of the most enjoyable meals we have had in years. We will definitely return."

  • "Set in elegant old school inn on campus of Phillips Andover academy, the place obviously got a very well thought out complete renovation. Perfect combination of lively bar, romantic tables that felt private yet part of the action. Food was stellar starting with a salad with pumpkin seeds and frozen grapes. Amazing. And just outside the window were the various comings and goings of various people involved in the school. Altogether a great experience."

  • "When I first walked in I'll be honest I thought we were going in for pub food which is not what I was expecting. So glad we did not turn around and walk out. The food and service were top notch not to mention the extensive wine list. We met friends there for dinner and were all happy with our meals. I ordered the salmon which was excellent and my husband ordered the duck and he was very pleased with his meal as well. We are very much looking forward to going back in a few weeks with some family members."
