A word from Samuel Beckett's Irish Gastro Pub
Welcome to Beckett's. We have taken a great deal of time and effort to try and create an authentic Irish Pub. Our menu is a collaboration of items from old Ireland to modern Ireland. We are trying to present to you an example of what we loved to eat growing up in Ireland and what is now popular
from some of our favorite haunts back home. We promise to offer you the freshest produce, and source as much as we can from local suppliers. We have a mixture of staff from local talent, to staff that we brought over from Ireland. We would like you to think of us as your stepping stone to Ireland. Our ambassadors will try and answer all your questions on Ireland while serving you great comfort food and premium drinks in a warm environment.

No table until 20 minutes after
reservation time, with children in tow. No offer to comp anything due to the wait. Slow kitchen. "Pork spare rib" is a misnomer. It is what I would call a pork shank or pork knuckle. Not what I was excepting. Should have asked. It includes mashed potatoes and boiled potatoes. The boiled potatoes were still somewhat crunchy. My least satisfying visit to the restaurant to date."

The food was really, really good.
Old Irish favorites with a level sophistication. Service was great as was the atmosphere. Went there with my wife for Valentines Day and had to bring our son b/c of no babysitter. Waiter was great with him. Just like a family owned pub in Ireland, very welcoming."

I like Beckett's but it's not for
everyone - this time it was a little too much bar scene & not enough dining, but we were eating late on a Saturday night so it was to be expected."

My friend and I went to watch
rugby and have lunch. We were given a table right by the television and no one tried to hurry us away. We were able to watch the whole game and eat some very tasty comfort food. Thoroughly enjoyed it."

Three couples enjoyed delicious
pub food and beer after Signature Theater outing. Service was attentive, polite, and pleasant. The blackened cod was really delicious -- I would order it again. Several at my table enjoyed the generous serving of delectable Guinness Burger, served on mashed potatoes rather than on a bun. Our only disappointment was the creme brulee -- the creamy custard was not as tasty as usual, and the hard caramel shell was much thicker and hard to chip through. But that was our only very small issue for a most enjoyable dinner. We all look forward to returning and trying out more of the Irish specials. Great beer selection, especially for the couple that hails from England."

Pre-theatre dinner. The food was
just OK. One of the aps came tepid. Great service and good wines."
Dined on 1/18/2014
We have been to SB many times and
service and food were always great. We had a new waiter this time and some things seems to be off in the service area. He wanted to charge us $1.50 fee to substitute another veggie for mashed potatoes. We did not notice any reference to this on the menu."
Dined on 1/14/2014
Beckett's provides a good
assortment of traditional pub food, prepared well. Shepards Pie is always a hit with diners, and some of the specials can surprise with their variety. A good place to feed off the vibrant crowd, but can be a bit noisy for quiet dining."

Neat layout to Sam's. Noisy front
bar and band area was great fun. Manager had our tables reserved just how I requested. Thanks Mark! There's a dining area in the back of the restaurant also where it's quieter. Also, theres stairs up to a bar area. There was a private party up there this night. We ordered the calamarie which was very good, and sliders which were typical bar quality. Great atmosphere, great band, and great friends. Total great experience!"
Dined on 1/11/2014
We both had delicious salads so
can't speak to the hot dishes but the menu had something for everyone. Our salads were fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is very lively, but not so loud it prohibits good conversation. A band was playing upstairs (great music) yet the noise level was fine. Our waiter (who was actually Irish) was friendly but not overbearing. Perfect night."
Dined on 1/11/2014
We are never disappointed at
Beckett's. It's the best option for a satisfying meal before the show at Signature (e.g., Gypsy, which is great BTW) or for a relaxing evening outside in the warm weather. Burgers, salads, fish cakes, even soup are all surprisingly good. Irish beer aplenty, good wines, and consistently fine service, often by men and women from Ireland. Their charm, accents, and skills add to the welcoming ambience."

My family and I enjoyed a round of
refreshment and dinner at Samuel Beckett's in Shirlington. This is one of our most favorite areas, with lots to see and great places to eat. This Irish pub is a fun location with excellent beers to choose from. They served classic pub food with a surprisingly complete and variety menu."

Great Irish Pub - service was
excellent & the food outstanding. This is my second visit - the first was for lunch. The food was great. My only complaint is we were seated next to the kitchen swinging door & I did make reservations so next time I plan to specifically state where I don't want to sit. Didn't stay late enough for the live music but would have liked to - another time. I loved the pubs in Ireland & Scotland & look forward to having a couple near my home. There is a lot of energy & friendliness - you know you want to be there."
Dined on 1/3/2014
Fun place and atmosphere. Nice
server. But the food needs a bit more care to be considered "gastro pub" food. I had the howth cakes and there was a definite fishiness in both the salmon and the white fish cake. The mussels were good and the bacon and cabbage also good. The best part of the meal was the Bailey's Bread Pudding - that was fit for foodies. I'd still go back, really like the atmosphere, and maybe try something different."

In most small Irish towns, there
are two pubs: the drinking hole and the upscale place. Samuel Becketts is the latter. It does not smell like a bar, but the front resembles one. The back area we ate in was lovely. It had high ceilings, and the walls were decorated in an interesting manner. Food was served quickly and presented nicely."
Dined on 12/28/2013
I live in a nearby neighborhood
and regret that I had not tried them before. Had a group of seven and all of us ordered a different entree. Without exception, all seven of us could not have been happier with the service or the food. I travel a lot and typically dine at Irish pubs wherever I go, so don't go and expect your standard pub fare. Although the menu does have a selection for a lot of that type of food, I consider Becketts to be a step up as it had a lot of different choices than what you would usually find."

Great fish & chip's! Fun, vibrant
bar & restaurant. Classy, fun bar atmosphere for 40+ singles, couples & groups. Somewhat kid-friendly... good kids menu, very loud, workable if you sit in back, don't recommend sitting in the front which feels like you're sitting in the bar & is very loud."

Warm and cozy. Really enjoyed the
Shepards Pie. Was able to conduct business over lunch. Very room and lots of seating."

Always reliable food and service.
Very convenient to Signature Theater."

area but we are glad we found it!"

We had 15 people prior to a
concert . I reserved the mezzanine area and it work ed out very nicely. We only got held up getting the checks divided and paid for. It was handled but they need a computer system upstairs To accommodate for faster service. Food and drink all wonderful."
Dined on 11/3/2013
Great bustling Irish pub with a
vast lineup of delicious beers on tap and very good food to go wth it. The perfect place to go before or after the movies around the corner. Try the lamb burger topped with Cashell blue cheese, absolutely wonderful."

Unexpected gem of a find. Drooled
over the online menu choices and made a reservation for lunch. When we arrived we were informed that brunch was still being served. (Re-checked the site and still don't see the brunch times.) No big deal, brunch it was. We both ordered the Traditional Irish Breakfast, two bangers, rashers, black & white pudding, eggs and potato cakes and a cup of coffee. The coffee is a bit strong but drinkable. The wife substituted and extra banger for the black & white pudding. The meal was as authentic as it gets. The individual items were tasty, including the potato cake, and the eggs were cooked to order. We weren't rushed and lingered over a final cup of coffee. Pub look. Quiet on Sunday afternoon. A must visit."

With many of staff being from
Ireland the food satisfies the locals of both Shirlington and the Emerald Isle. Typical Irish staples such as beef stew and shephard's pie are mixed in with more modern Irish options such as curry chicken and risotto cakes."

The setting is gorgeous--you are
transported to a high-end Irish pub! A beautiful, comfortable decor. We all tried starters: delicious corn-crab chowder, and the mussels with delectable fries that were soft and fluffy and not greasy. The multigrain bread served wit ht e soup was divine--they should sell it for take-away! There are many traditional Irish menu items--lamb stew, shepherd's pie, roasted lamb shack (our party had all of these, and there was so generous a portion, two of us packed half to take home. The third diner ordered the pork and cabbage dish, but preferred the taste of ours. No room for dessert!"

Wonderful family night out
celebrating daughters 21st Birthday- Could not have picked a nicer place for this special event. Staff was professional but very friendly and helpful. The meal was delicious (traditional Irish feast) and served promptly. Our service was exceptional and the outside setting was perfect. Thank you Mike, the suggested Bear Fight drink, it was a hit with the B-day girl! What a great place to enjoy dinner or a special event with friends and family!"

Have eaten here many times and
it's always good. The service is always prompt and polite. The dishes a flavorful, varied, and interesting. This isn't heavy pub food. It's generally robust but healthy, and some of it fits into any diet. The prices are reasonable, too!"
Dined on 9/2/2013
My husband and I dined here simply
because it was close to Signature Theater. However, the food was really good. I will say, however, that the portions are HUGE--big enough to share--so plan ahead!"
Dined on 9/7/2013
Excellent service -- compliments
to Erica. Great selection of Irish dishes. The meat loaf was excellent, although it needed more gravy. Corn/crab chowder was delicious."
Dined on 9/8/2013
This is a classic faux-pub
atmosphere with pub grub."
Dined on 9/1/2013
Better than average bar food. I
had a lamb shank that demonstrated some considerable kitchen competence. We were seated right next to the kitchen doors, which would be objectionable for the noise in most places, but by virtue of its distance from the bar was about the quietest place in the house. Service was cheerful and attentive."
Dined on 7/20/2013
We each had a different soup of
the day and enjoyed them. The burgers were cooked as requested and were delicious. The big hit of the night were the onions straws, which my husband got instead of the fries."
Dined on 8/20/2013
We enjoyed a pleasant early Sunday
supper just before a show at Signature (they offer a discount for Signature patrons). The menu is well balanced and reasonably priced. The pork short ribs looked more like a shank - it was a very large portion, and prepared deliciously. The blackened cod was also a large portion, nicely presented and very tasty. Our waiter looked and acted bored but was reasonably efficient. This isn't haute cuisine, but it is very good pub food with enough choices to satisfy everyone. And being just one block from the theater makes it our favorite alternative to the crowds up the street."
Dined on 8/18/2013
Do not miss this pub. Shirlington
is a great place for drinks and foodies to indulge, but Samuel Beckett's has it all: wine, whiskey, porters and food. Great decor, ambience, and service."
Dined on 8/17/2013
Having just returned home from
Dublin that day, Beckett's had a lot to live up to. While the food did not compare to the best of the Emerald Isle, they at least gave it a shot unlike other "Irish" pubs in the area that are simply bars with an Irish name. They honored our request for a window seat and the service and ambience were very good."
Dined on 8/14/2013
We had a very good meal at
Beckett's. The chowder of the day, a seafood chowder, was delicious. And the tasty burgers were cooked to order. Finally our waiter, Jeff, although not one of the Irish ones, was very attentive."
Dined on 8/3/2013
The Open Table rating for noise
should include a category that describes noise as being the cause of diners not being able to communicate with each other at their own table which diminishes the experience as well as takes away from the enjoyment of the food. The noise at Samuel Becketts, particularly, at dinner, ruins what would be an enjoyable experience. It is less overwhelming at lunch. The noise comes from other customers who become obnoxious in their own conversations with each other as the evening goes along."
Dined on 8/2/2013
We again had dinner at Beckett's
before attending a show at Signature Theater in Shirlington. We sat outside and had very good wine and beer and above average salads, burger, and veggies. We always appreciate the wide range of healthy and delicious items on the menu. And we have excellent service every time we visit. Oddly, the only disappointment is the choice of beers. My husband likes a really hoppy IPA and I like a light hefeweisen, but neither is available on tap or in the bottle as far as we can tell from the list. We wish the wide range of foods, atypical for an Irish pub, would be matched by a wider range of beers, including American micro-brews and German classics. Just a suggestion from regular ciustomers who shall return."
Dined on 8/1/2013
We're not regulars at Samuel
Beckett's but we often go there before a show at Signature. We generally like the food and the atmosphere, although sometimes it's a little noisy for us. My husband thinks they have about the best fish and chips he's ever had, but it was off this night, tasting too much of the Guiness in the batter. The manager came over and offered Dan anything else on the menu (a yummy Greek salad, in this case), and we still had plenty of time to make our show."
Dined on 7/21/2013
This restaurant is a little gem in
the midst of Shirlington. The menu is wonderfully diverse with both traditional Irish fare and a great selection of fish and other more classic entrees. I tried the blackened cod---spicy and succulent, served with fresh vegetables and a delicious wild rice. My companion had sea scallops, fresh brocolini and a potato cake. She could not stop raving about how delicious it was. The portions were very generous and the meal filling. We skipped dessert but based on the desserts carried past our table during the meal, we'll come back to try them next time. Make the trip to Shirlington, it's worth it!"
