Diner Reviews
  • "Faced with a familiar dilemma of feeding vegetarians we were directed to Sampan. Excellent choice! Yes the place is loud and the interior oh so trendy but the food was to die for. OK, so they didn't have either of the sparkling wines we tried to order but they made it right by giving us a more expensive bottle at the lower price. The menu was so interesting the carnivores in the party went vegetarian for the evening. Were I not using a tablet I would write reams about this place. If only it were in my home town so I could do a full on review for the local newspaper. Yes, I really do that. Look for Table Talk at the the Monterey Herald (California)."

  • "A friend took me here for dinner. It was great. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is inviting, the service was great. What more can I say!?"

  • "First off, the waiter we had just gave off a "too good to be a waiter" vibe, which didn't exactly start the night well, but I figured maybe he was just swamped and I should cut him a break. But, that wasn't the case.... He took the orders, but couldn't explain anything on the menu. He then decided to bring out everyone's dinner, except mine (four other people all sat and waited for me). 20 minutes later I finally got my food after dealing with the waiters attitude. When he dropped off my lomein, it was just awful. It tasted like they forgot my meal and threw this garbage in a bowl and called it food. I make the same dish 100 times better at home, so no need to ever visit this place again."

  • "The chef's tasting menu is wonderful. Expect small portions with bold flavors and variety. You'll leave full to stuffed from the sheer number of items you'll select. Drinks and service are tasty and attentive."

  • "We like a good tasting menu, and this is it! Small servings allow you to try many dishes. We loved all the sides. The lobster roll was better then any I've had. The rice dishes were ok. The service was great! Go! You will find something that you will love enough to go again. I'm going back for that lobster roll. I can't wait!"

  • "We had the misfortune to be helped by Amanda who made it very clear we were her last table of the night and couldn't wait to leave. From the moment we sat down we we're rushed to order, eat and leave. All the meanwhile the table next to us was being helped by a very attentive waiter who constantly checked on them and offered them dessert. We were never asked if we wanted dessert or anything after our meal--the check was simply brought to us. The food was OK at best, nothing out of this world. So to Amanda's horribly lack of attention, I will never be visiting this place again nor would I recommend it to anyone."

  • "Sampan is great, the edamame wontons are to die for and definitely worth it! The waitress was not super friendly so I gave it 4 stars but I've been there 3 times already and I will be coming back!"

  • "I've been to Sampan a bunch of times and it's my go-to restaurant. My mom, who is a vegetarian, eats more there than I have ever seen her eat anywhere and I could happily make a meal out of the edamame dumplings. The short ribs are fantastic as well."

  • "We went on the recommendation of our hotel concierge on the premise of light fare. The food here was extremely good and getting a reservation on a Saturday evening was not too tough. Five of us shared several small plates (with the waiter upcharging for five servings) and we each tried one of the large plates. In the end, we were satisfied but not full but it did cost us over $225 and no one ordered a drink! Each of the small plate additions were another $7-10 so be careful what you ask for."

  • "Our party if three order the chef tasting and it was great. We were apprehensive of if would be enough food, but to our delight we could not even finish the last dish to come out. Everything we ordered was amazing and I especially recommend the Kobe beef and Chilean Sea Bass."

  • "As usual, Sampan delivered! We ordered the Korean BBQ fried chicken satay, and it was fantastic. The mushroom dumplings were great as usual. We tried the Vietnamese filet and it was outstanding; the Pekin duck was the usual favorite. The only glitch, although minor as we were not in a hurry, was that the entrees took longer than usual to come out but our server acknowledged this and comped us our desserts, which was a nice touch. Will definitely return again and again!"

  • "The food was good but service was terrible and the restaurant was very hot inside, to the point that it was incredibly uncomfortable and we just had to leave our meal. Hopefully this doesn't happen again but it will take us some time to go back again. The server and manager didn't care about our issues whatsoever and made no attempts to improve the situation."

  • "I took my wife there for our anniversary. We were late and they accommodated our request to change our reservation - mind you it was a Wednesday night. We ordered four items from the small plate menu and three items from the large plate. Our first four items arrived very quickly and were very tasty. Our server was a very nice guy but we really did not need his help. The spot is a little loud and not the best if you are looking for an intimate spot. If you are a foodie and like a lively restaurant this is a nice spot."

  • "Food was good, a little bit noisy, very crowded, seems like a hot spot, did not enjoy as much as I was expecting too"

  • "As usual, the food continues to shine. The edamame dumplings are my clear favorites, but the Brussels Sprouts, crispy spicy rock shrimp and the Tuna Satay (in lettuce cups with soba noodles), were close behind. The major issue with this dining experience was the 30 minute wait for a reserved table. The hostesses seems to shrug this off, as in "those early diners are just hanging out too long".... They have a robust happy hour that lasts til 7, so they need to plan for this when taking reservations. It might be different if there was someplace to wait, but the bar is packed (from left over HH). The noise level was pure chaos, and I later found my throat sore from trying to talk to my fellow diners over our drinks and dinner."

  • "Great spot when you're looking for a special dinner. The menu features a mix of small, medium, and large plates that are made for sharing. Be sure to ask your server how many pieces come with each; you can ask for extra if needed, like 4 instead of 3 pieces. I highly recommend the Kim Chee Fried Rice as one of your selections; it's delicious and filling. The soy foam on the Mushroom Dumplings really added to that small plate dish. For two couples, we ordered 2 small plates, the fried rice, and 2 larger plates (scallops, Peking chicken), which was perfect for a pre-theater dinner. Without drinks and dessert (not enough time), the total with tip was about $100. Note that Sampan can get noisy when it's full; we went early."

  • "This is hands down the best spot in Philly for a first date or with a group before an energetic night out. Tapas style food makes ordering a breeze. Girls love the unique drinks/dessert menu also. Highly recommended."

  • "I can't stop talking about the food at sampan! From the earthy delicious edamame dumplings, to the kimchee short rib satay to the amazing entrees, I just can't pick a favorite. To top it off, the staff is great, friendly and very professional. Don't leave without trying dessert!"

  • "The portions were not sharable. The tofu was bland. The waitress was slow."

  • "I'm not a snob but waiting 20 mins to be seated is terrible .... If a manager hadn't notice the slight I might still be waiting .... Great food !"

  • "The waitress was very nice and we received great service overall. The drinks were very good, a tad small, but it was the sips menu, so it was expected."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "We ordered from about 5 total items from 3 sections of the menu + drinks - I cant remember the specific dishes but every single thing was absolutely delicious. We only had a little more than an hour before a show at the Kimmel Center and the waiter made sure out food was ready extremely quickly so we had plenty of time to walk over. Excellent food and excellent service"

  • "Went with a group of six who didn't know each other well. So, after being polite about what to order - for self or for table? - we opted to get a random assortment of small dishes. Fantastic! The food was beautifully presented and each dish was delicious! Surprised the veggie-haters with wonderful crispy brussel sprouts. And who knew cheese steak dumplings would taste so good? Favorites were the Korean BBQ, shrimp dumplings and the sesame udon noodles. Yum! The dinner really brought our group together. Great night!"

  • "Tasting menus usually entail the kitchen pre-selecting everything. At Sampan, you have choice between numerous options--a huge plus making it highly worthwhile. The food itself was outstanding as was the service."

  • "I went with my husband and daughter. We wanted to order the chef's menu for two, and have my daughter share what we got, but the waitress recommended against it and had us order the chefs menu for three. Turned out to be much more expensive than ordering the same dishes a la carte and, as I feared, too much food for us. I saw the waitress do the same thing to the table next to us (a couple who just wanted to share everything). Even though everything was tasty, I felt a little ripped off by the experience."

  • "Food and service at Sampan was good but the whole experience was very rushed, felt like there was no time to breath during the dinner. Nice atmosphere though."

  • "We celebrated our daughters birthday on May 24th. The food and service were fabulous! "
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "The waiter was misleading from the start. It seemed like he was purposely trying to jack up the bill for his own personal gain. The food was not bad, but it just ruined the entire experience."
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "I go to Sampan for happy hour often, as the deals are great. We decided to give it a shot for dinner and were not disappointed, for the most part. The kobe skewers, bass and edamame dumplings were amazing. They spared no expense--or vodka--in the lychee martini. So food and drink-wise, we were satiated. As this is a hot spot, it was crowded and very loud. We were stuck at a table that was kind of free-floating in the middle of the floor between the dining room and bar and often felt in the way. The silverware and bar was right behind me, making it even harder to hear. So if you go, beware that if you want to have an intimate conversation, this is not the place. If you want to see-and-be-seen over tasty food, you're going to the right spot."
