Diner Reviews
  • "We came here prior to attendance at the symphony. The staff was very nice and accommodating but the food was very slow coming out of the kitchen. It was also uneven in taste. My husband ordered the scampi appetizer which was so spicy, he couldn't eat much of it. There was no mention of spice on the menu and the wait person said that the chef may have been too liberal with the pepper flakes."

  • "Friends introduced this place to us. It is always good, delicious! They are flexible, will do family portions. Everything is homemade. We look forward to going again soon."

  • "With the closing of Mari Luna, Sammy's is now the closest restaurant to the Meyerhoff. I think the staff realizes this, as they managed to handle to rush of customers adequately on a symphony-packed evening, which of course has a fixed-time component. I'm not sure that the management realizes that, however, as more servers (and perhaps cooks?) would have made things much smoother on the evening we dined there, and therefore the meal would have felt more special. As it was, it was just "good" and convenient. And maybe that is enough."

  • "Food was fabulous at this corner restaurant near Penn Station and the Lyric Theater. We came up by train from DC and were seated promptly at 7:00. The place was very busy with diners going to the show like we were. Unfortunately, although we put our order in promptly (at our server's urging) our food didn't arrive until 7:50. That made us 25 minutes late for the show, Highly recommend arriving at 6:30 or earlier for an 8PM show. Otherwise, food was excellent and the wine list included many value-priced wines."

  • "On a Wednesday evening with a 6:30 reservation, we, five were seated promptly and warmly greeted. The food was delicious, but my chief complaint was the length of time for meal service. Our orders were placed by 7:00 and not received until 8:15! Our waitress was apologetic and tossed in some extra meatballs, but that did not make up for inordinate wait. I'd like to return for the food but I'm not sure as others have made similar complaints."

  • "We had a reservation here for New Year's Eve. We were promptly seated and brought water by our waitress who then disappeared for 20 minutes. By the time she came back to take our order we were starving and ready to leave but being NYE we knew we would not be able to get in anywhere else. My husband ordered The Filet Dew medium and was brought an overcooked steak with a sauce on it that tasted like mayonnaise. I ordered the Spaghetti alla Carbonara which seemed to be lacking the cream, it was just eggy noodles. We would have sent food back but our waitress disappeared again and didn't come back to see how our food tasted for another 15 minutes. We were ready to leave. Gave our leftovers away to a man on the street and had dessert elsewhere."

  • "Sammy's never fails to serve an outstanding meal. We were particularly impressed with the calamari, which included fried green pepper and onions, a nice touch"

  • "Sammy's continues to do it right....we had great service for our party of 8. They are very flexible in how they serve their food, some things we had family style, some right off the menu, all was good."

  • "Service was non existent. One server did not show up for work, one cook hurt his ankle We were seated right at the front door and cold air kept blowing over us. Had to get served by a bar tender Waited an hour for our food to arrive Had to eat it in ten minutes to get to a show"

  • "The food is authentic Italian and freshly prepared, with awesome service. We both enjoyed the filet with port wine reduction and we each ordered a different side (penne pasta, sauteed broccoli, with tomato sauce on the side) to share. We don't care for olive oil dipping sauce with cheese and the staff was happy to make us one without. For starters we enjoyed their excellent fried calamari and peppers, and also the Prosciutto di Parma Sopressa cheese plate. They have an excellent valued wine list that won't break the bank. They also have valet parking at a reasonable price and will keep your car if you are attending a show at the Meyerhoff (2 blocks away). We never felt rushed and were well attended to by a friendly caring staff."

  • "Not prepared for the pre theater rush, poor service- we waited 45 minutes after ordering for food to arrive. The food was fresh and hot, but overly salted and order wasn't correct. Waitress never came back and we had to go. Valet idea is great, but at the end of the evening, he handed me my keys and told me it was too much trouble to cross the street in the car with the theater traffic, please get the car yourself! Great location to the Symphony Hall, but there are other places to go."

  • "My date & I reserved a table for 3. He's 6'2" and we were placed at a 2 top table that was way too small for 2...thankfully,our friend cancelled at the last minute. Yummy Italian food but my filet was overcooked, mediocre service, and really loud/noisy restaurant. We made our reservation for 9:30pm hoping the hustle & bustle would've died down a bit. No luck. Also, chocolate martini needs some tutoring...I suggest La Scala school of espresso or chocolate martini."

  • "So happy to have been introduced to Sammy's. Everything about it is comfortable, cosy, great food, and a friendly, efficient staff. We love our Little Italy restaurants, but not as much as Sammy's. We look forward to many more visits."

  • "Sammy's is always a good choice. The food is wonderful and the portions are quite generous. We were running late but called ahead and when we got there, the maitre'd told us he was so glad that we called. He offered us a table near a party and warned that it would be loud, but it was our choice to sit there. This is a great little find downtown and I would recommend it very highly."

  • "The food was excellent and very nicely prepared. The wait staff were excellent and friendly. It IS a very noisy restaurant to the point that sometimes one has to shout"

  • "Our first time there, the food was very good, very fresh and flavorful. Good prices. However, the service was poor. We were in a cute table for 2 in the alcove by the window and it was very hard for anyone to get to us. No one approached us for 10 minutes until I got someone's eye. Our dirty dishes sat on our table for too long after the salad and main course. Our water glasses were never refilled and I wasn't sure who our waitperson was. When we left there were tables covered in crumbs which had not been reset and others which had dirty dishes still on the long after the guests left. I don't know if they were short staffed, but it seemed some people were busy and others were just standing around."

  • "Our group decided to try Sammy's before the concert at the Meyerhoff. The web-site said allow 2 hours. We made our reservation for 2 1/2 hours before "show time." The evening started off well as the drinks were great and the room was only about 25% full. We ordered our entrees and one appetizer about 15 mintes afte arrival but the entrees did not appear until one hour and 25 minutes after ordering. Between ordering and the entrees arriving the restaurant was full but everyone else on our floor was served prior to us. To make matters worse one of the entres ordered was suppose to be a special of the house. It arrived luke warm and the veal was tastless. Additionally, the waitress and the manager seemed indifferent."

  • "We went to Sammy's Trattoria on the recommendation of a friend and we are glad that we did! The food was excellent! We enjoyed the bruschetta appetizer with our cocktails. The veal milanese was done to perfection and the chicken parmesan was equally delicious. Our desserts were the tiramisu and cannoli--both very good! It was a cold night and they had reserved a table near the door for us--but it was too cold for us to be able to enjoy our dinner. We had to wait a little longer--we were not in a hurry anyway--but the host was able to move us to a warmer area. Service was timely and friendly. Will definitely go back soon!"

  • "The food was excellent, the wine list fine, service energetic. My companion had veal involito with a side of broccoli and I ordered the seafood fra diavolo; as I have done before, I asked that it be served on spinach instead of paparadelle pasta. The waitress said "no problem." When the meal was delivered it was on pasta; I was told the kitchen didn't have enough spinach to accommodate me. To make up for this, the restaurant would comp dessert -- homemade tiramisu. A lovely gesture, but when the patron asks for spinach instead of pasta, it seems odd that more free carbs are what the kitchen offers! It would have been preferable if I'd been told that there wasn't enough spinach before my meal was served; I would have ordered something else."

  • "My husband and I LOVE the food at Sammy's. I have never had a bad meal there. The salad is a must....Everytime we go I do pick a new entree. We also have to say Renee is the best waitress. Also I love when the owner visits the table."

  • "We try this restaurant once every Baltimore Symphony season, hoping it will prove to be acceptable. Alas, that has not been nor is it the case. Heavy and oversauced food, oversized servings, poor service, very noisy - generally unappealing. The only thing going for it is its proximity to the symphony hall."

  • "The staff was very welcoming and easily accommodated my friend's gluten-free request. We arrived early (5:30) and the place filled up quickly. Our table was in the middle of the room and felt a little crowded at times. But, the meal was promptly served and we were able to easily make our theater reservations. There were 3 of us and we all went for the pasta. Overall, it was a nice dinner at affordable prices. Will go there again."

  • "Friends enjoyed their salads, but the chicken dish (spinach and crab) I had was a mess - way too much sauce, spinach and crab - I could not even see the chicken, when it was, after all the chicken that should have been the star."

  • "Most recent visit was Jan. 14. What a super meal! We both chose Chicken Francaise as our main dish. Super preparation and taste. Nicky made great martinis to start things. Mussels and Sallie's salad were delicious as well. Meal was well-served with excellent pacing between courses and the hot dishes were served hot! We've been asking for real Tartufos for dessert - and were told that they would be available soon. Can't wait! This is one Italian restaurant in Baltimore area that comes very close to some of New York's best."

  • "We really enjoyed all our food (eggplant lasagna, risotto, gnocchi w mushroom) and the bread was crusty with an airy, soft center. Our waiter was friendly, informed and attentive. After being cautioned by me (see an earlier review), my watchful fiance feels certain that a spoon is in the cheese and everyone uses the spoon. We arrived almost 30 min early, thinking we'd have a drink at the bar. The host quickly sat us at a nice table by a window. There was a strong cigarette smell coming off some staff. I work in addictions treatment and am used to smokers; this was strong to me. Not sure the restaurant can do much about that...There is a free smoking cessation class at the healthcare facility (Chase Brexton) across the street (ha ha....)."

  • "Decided to try Sammy's after a Sunday afternoon BSO concert -- it's within walking distance. We had a 5:30 reservation and were promptly seated. Service was quite good but not overly attentive, and the server nicely answered our several questions about menu items. The house salad with house dressing was very good. I was somewhat disappointed in the Judge Waxman's Lasagna being a baked cheese lasagna with a bolognese ragu ladled over the top after baking -- sort of a deconstructed lasagna in which I missed the blending of flavors. My wife had the eggplant lasagna appetizer as an entree. This is actually a small plate, but the broccoli rabe included as a layer was tough/undercooked. All in all, a nice neighborhood restaurant."

  • "Sammy's was close to the BSO and an easy walk from BSO parking. We were seated quickly and our server was good, but our entree's took a very long time to arrive. My granddaughter's dish was great and so was my veal special dish. We ordered a Cappuccino and it also took a long time to arrive. I did notice that although we were seated before several other tables our entrees arrived after there's! Our late arrival of our dinner caused us to miss the first 15 minutes of the BSO but as it was an introduction we did get to see and hear the main event."

  • "The menu is impressive and seems inspired from true home-made Italian. It was a bit disappointing to find out they were out of some items, but they had so many things to try it wasn't really an inconvenience. The portions were big, but not overly big. The food tasted great. Would definitely go here again. Pretty busy, but that was probably due to the performance at the BSO (keep in mind if going there). Thank you for having us. Enjoyed it"

  • "The food was nice, but probably slightly overpriced for the quality. The service was adequate, but they really need to change the font on their menu."

  • "The food was decent but the service left much to be desired. We were seated promptly at our reservation time, but waited 15 minutes for our menus. The gratuity for our party of 6 (which included 2 small children) was included, but listed among the entrees and appetizers as "open food." If I hadn't asked about that particular charge I would have ended up tipping twice. It also makes me wonder if we paid tax on the included gratuity. We will not be returning."

  • "This is a great option if you need to get to the Meyerhoff for a performance. It is an easy walk to the theater. Service and the food were good. It is not Little Italy, but we did enjoy our dinners. (3 couples dined)"

  • "We were seated upstairs and our waitress comes over and tells us that the city has shut off the water. I was expecting to be told that the restaurant was closing. But they served us appetizers, dinner and dessert. Although our wine was served in a water glass, our dessert served with saucers, and no drinking water was available. The waitress was very accommodating and gave us dessert and drinks for free. The evening was a bit strange because of the uncertainty that we would be told the restaurant was closing. Food good. Service very good."
