  • "NIce quiet atmosphere for a date or quiet conversation in a historic building with character. Food was fair considering the prices, pleasant service but brought the wrong meal which they corrected without asking a few minutes later. Hard to tell the difference between salmon or chicken on the dinner salad, hence the mistake. Overall Okay but I probably will not go back."

  • "Went for Valentine's dinner. Sat for 30 minutes before our order was even taken. Empty tables all around so it was not because they were busy. Our server was AWFUL! We were NEVER offered another drink and he NEVER came back to check on our table. Not inviting or personable at all. My food was cold and bland and our dessert order was wrong but our server slapped the plates down so quick and walked away we couldn't even tell him. I will NEVER visit this establishment again. An expensive lesson learned."

  • "I brought my girlfriend and my daughter for Valentines. The menu looked good for the two adults but I was very suprised when I asked the waitress if my 7 year old could just get a side salad or side of something and she said she would check with the kitchen and they said no. The waitress didn't really seem to care or try to give me any other ideas. The place wasn't even half way full so that started off not very well. Then we recieved our meal and the $45.00 pasta my daughter ordered was cold, my steak was well over done, my girlfriends crab cakes as well as mine had no flavor at all. Then when we went to order dessert they ran out of the only thing I wanted which was the Red Velvet Cake. With out a doubt the worst $175.00 meal every."

  • "Made our reservation for group of 5 to celebrate a birthday for Sunday lunch through Opentable. When we arrived our table was by the window as requested. Disclaimer: 2 of our party had waited tables in Shockoe Slip in the 80's when we were in college, including Sam's, so our expectations were high. It certainly looked wonderful and our waitress was friendly. The restaurant was far from full, but it took forever from the time of our order to getting any food on the table. Rather than bring out bread or our salads, everything came out very late at the same time. I had the shrimp and grits and while the flavor was good, the shrimp was overcooked. We had still had great time, but I would say they need to hustle more in the kitchen."

  • "Our reservation was for 8pm and the hostess had so many duties we waited over 30 minutes to be seated. The waitress never asked if I wanted a 2nd glass of wine on extra bread. She was in such a hurry she never waited long enough to receive an answer when asked if everything was ok. The salad wedge was a chunk of lettuce with a container of dressing and a few bacon bit crumbs and a couple of tomatoes beside it. Steak oscar had some type of crab mixture on it that I could not eat. The steak was very good. The girl playing guitar and singing seemed to please some folks however I thought she had trouble finding the right notes. Needless to say we won't go back."

  • "We had a part of five, and everyone's meal was delicious! The waiter was proactive and attentive, without going overboard. Best crab cake I have ever had. Tons of garlic in the Ranch dressing... yummy, but avoid if you plan to be kissing later. :)"

  • "My Husband and kids came for our 16th wedding anniversary. My husband and son had the Bacon Cheese burger with fries came out great, tasted great. My daughter and I had the crab cakes and wanted pasta salad with them. After a few minutes of placing our order our waitress came back to the table and said that they were our of pasta salad. I could see if it was 8 or 9 at night but we ate at 130 in the afternoon and were our or a menu item. The crab cakes were ok 6 out of 10. The best thing that I had was the fresh cut fries. Im not sure if we will return or not."

  • "Went here for dinner on a Friday night and it was empty. Got the special which was a blackened fish stuffed with crab meat and it was pretty good. Not the most flavor but it was not bad. I would not recommend the Filet Oscar which the other person ordered as it was cooked with almost no flavor at all. The service was slow, and has been every time at this location, but the server herself was nice. For the place being as empty as it was I would have expected better service. Location is nice being right in the middle of the slip but they are one of the only restaurants that does not have valet or validate for parking. So, make sure to factor that into your meal and timing."

Our "fresh" oysters and white wine both arrived unchilled. We read our menus only by the light of a street lamp outside the window. Service was friendly and competent. Overall, a dissapointment and will not return."

  • "Over the years we have eaten at Sam Miller's many times and it remains consistently great - service, food and ambience. It has one of the best Restaurant Week menue's - many "surf & turf" offererings with crab and filet, etc - whereas many restaurants go the "shrimp and grits" route during this promotion. There is nothing fancy or "cutting edge" about Sam's but the food is beautifully prepared - appetizers, entrees and sides - and nicely presented. I had the she crab soup and it is justifiably "world-famous" - rich and creamy. My wife had the wedge salad- huge and delicous. My salmon and filet combo was delicious as was her crab and filet. If you haven't tried Sam Miller's you should!"
