A word from Salut Bar Americain - St. Paul
Salut Bar Americain - St. Paul is the brasserie down the block. Warm and welcoming, with an urbane wit and urban sensibility, it’s an afternoon hangout and an evening refuge. It’s your neighbor with a French accent. The setting evokes a classic Parisian bistro/restaurant. The service is spirited, confident and capably executed. And the cooking captures the freshness and hearty flavor of French cuisine. It’s the vibe inside that sets Salut apart from bowing maitre ‘d’s and sniffing sommeliers. From the welcoming wine list, to the playful décor, to the genial buzz in the dining room, Salut celebrates the French restaurant’s essential qualities while dispensing with the exclusionary ones. It demystifies French food by making it accessible and rewarding while poking fun at the stereotypes that surround it. In this sense, Salut is a dual citizen: Authentically French! Book the Le Grand Boeuf family-style feast, serving 8-10 people. Call Liz Jobe to make your reservation 651.917.2345. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Great seafood and cocktails. Atmosphere is lively not to loud that you can converse. Great service and entertainment. Its lively."

  • "I am a frequent diner at Salut and like them a lot. We had a group of people that they handled perfectly, the staff was friendly and the food terrific. Their pommes frites with béarnaise are a must have. One of my favorite meals is to share the fries with the table and order a bowl of their French onion soup for my main course. Or, get a friend to share pommes frites and the mussels with you. Save the baguette for the sauce, it is amazing."

  • "A group of four friends meets 4-5 times each year for breakfast or brunch on Sundays, and we had not ben to Salut for awhile so we decided to return. We were able to make a reservation for the preferred time. The initial difficulty was trying to find a place to park. I myself drove around the neighborhood fro over 20 minutes, but finally found a spot 1 1/2 blocks away. I realized that this was bound to happen given the time of our reservation. The menu had many options, and each of us found something we wanted. Our server was helpful and was able to explain when someone had a question about a menu item. The food was served hot, and the server kept our coffee cups filled. We had an enjoyable meal, and will likely return in future."

  • "Ordered a caesar salad. Came with wonderful fresh anchovies but the romaine had obviously been chopped and reused from a prior day. Brown edges at all the cut marks. Credited from the bill but anyone that has worked a kitchen knows that this is a sign that other things are amiss. No apologies and an offer for something else only after my dining partner had finished her meal."

  • "We were seated immediately. I suggest the valet service for parking BTW. The food was excellent. The oysters are always fresh. Service is second to none. You can hit just about any food choice here, so there is no worries about someone in your party not finding something on the menu. This is a Parasole Holdings restaurant so the standards are always at higher level IMO and they are a great company to work for. Sign up for their frequent dinner club too."

  • "Took a new friend there for dinner - nice Grand Ave location and good menu that satisfies all preferences. Our server was intrusive! He pushed us repeatedly to order, giving us no time to chat or consider the options. It was comfortably full but there was no way on a weeknight he was going to turn our table. Worse - I am gluten-free, not by choice. The server was helpful in that regard and worked through the menu with me. When my soup arrived, it contained a large crouton. I asked the expeditor to please bring me a fresh cup without the crouton. When the soup was returned to me, it was obviously the SAME cup! He had merely removed the crouton. I assume it was the expeditor's fault. Train your staff! I will not return."

  • "Salut Americain--St. Paul is a good place to enjoy dining out "for no reason" or to celebrate (birthdays, anniversaries, new job, etc.) with friends and family. Food is exceptional. Service is excellent-- prompt attention, orders, delivery of food, etc., and just the right amount and spacing of attention to one's table."

  • "Just went for a quick bite after some spa services and it was really chill, relaxed, just what we needed. Service was awesome, will be back!"

  • "It was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in Saint Paul. You could have a normal voice level conversation without having to yell or talk loud over the music and you only heard the buzz of the closest tables. The appetizer "bacon kettle corn" was delicious and so was the walleye. The employees were very friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends and co-workers."

  • "We had a wonderful evening. The waiter was accommodating and was there when we needed him - but not hovering over us. Food was delicious, hot, and fresh. It was a Monday so the restaurant was not overly busy, which we enjoyed as we had a toddler with us. Highly recommend."

  • "We come to Salut regularly. The service is almost always wonderful (and this visit was no exception - Cory was superb). And while their regular menu items are perfectly reliable, they occasional have a stand out special. This visit it was the braised lamb with sauted gnocchi. To die for!"

  • "I had the hangar steak frites, and the steak was done to perfection (rare) and was meltingly tender and VERY flavorful. The fries were very good, and since we got the Bearnaise sauce to dip them in, excellent, even. We shared a mixed greens petite salad, which was good, but not great, and for 6.95 maybe could have been better. As it was, it felt overpriced. My husband remarked that although the steak was great, he felt the prices were high since all you got with the steak (and the steaks were smaller cuts) were fries (or mashed potatoes or salad.) 27.95 We had a glass of Malbec that was quite nice. But the service was great, attentive, accommodating, and helpful, such as pouring some wine from my husband's glass to one for me to share."

  • "We had a delightful ll dinner here Thurs. Eve. Arrived before 6pm, so first glass of house red wine was cheap, at happy hour price, as were two starters-- beef tartare, and mussels. Both v well prepared and tasty! Then shared the beet salad w goat cheese and a crab cake. Both of these were exceptional. Our waiter was delightful! Great sense of humor, thoughtful and totally on his game! And, I want to say, he was cute, too! Ok, PC police may come get me... Anyway, what a nice spot. Always have loved the Edina site, but this was first visit to st Paul site, and it truly stands on its own as a fine Grand Avenue gem!"

  • "On our way to lunch with friends before a concert at Hamline, my husband and I suffered a disastrous car breakdown. No one was hurt but we spent some miserable minutes stuck on a narrow ramp with lots of irritable drivers honking and shaking their fists at us. Once we got the car towed, our friends picked us up and we headed to Salut. It was such an all-around delightful experience that we were able to enjoy lunch and the concert fully before dealing with real life. Thank you."

  • "Our group of 8 enjoyed our luncheon birthday celebration. Our server Talia was great and the food was very good. My pasta dish with sweet potatoes was excellent. A terrific blend of flavors. They also included a complimentary dessert for the guest celebrating her birthday. The separate checks were no problem. I have dined here with a larger group and always had a positive experience."

  • "The food at Salut is ok....but not worth the price. The steak was oversauced and tough. I can get something better for less money elsewhere."

  • "Love French bistro style. The steak frite was great. Since they added valet parking, it is much easier to get there."

  • "Wish server had told us they don't recommend the wine that I ordered. When I told her I didn't like my choice, she said (yea, we don't like that one). Then why is it on the menu??"

  • "Salut is a great place for Sunday brunch - and dinner as well. On this particular Sunday, service seemed exceptionally slow. Our server indicated it was because they were extremely busy but looking around the restaurant it didn't appear that way - especially at 1:30 p.m. When the food did arrived, it was very good - everyone commented on how tasty and delicious everything was so that certainly made up for the service issue."

  • "Food was awesome! Service was fabulous as well. We will definitely be back! It is pricey for a family so we will need to budget in our return."

  • "I've been to Salut a couple of times now and this time went with a group of 5 including 1 child. The place was a bit louder than I remember which made it a bit hard for conversation but everyone was pretty satisfied with the food. The calamari though was just okay. As always, loved the fries, escargot, tartare, oysters and since I had never had an early dinner at Salut before the weekend happy hour was a sweet surprise to me!"

  • "My husband and I received a giftcard for a chain of your restaurants and when I looked up Salut online it had oysters! We love oysters and really wanted to come try them. We decided to try Happy Hour because it's a good way to see if the food is good or not. We ordered the oysters, sliders, mussels, and fries. Overall the food was good and the atmosphere was great! Happy hour also ran through the restaurant so we didn't have to wait for a table in the bar section only. MAJOR PLUS! I saw how accomodating it was for big groups and families. The service was great and we were in and out of there in one hour. We will definitely recommend this place to others and will also be coming back hopefully in the summer time to try out the patio."

  • "Salut is the place to go for summer outdoor patio dining and great summer salads. Other than that, the food is mediocre and overpriced."

  • "Eggs Benedict were so good I was tempted to order another. At a busier time I suspect the noise level would be too much"

  • "We've been there many times with good results but our recent Sunday brunch experience was disappointing. Service was poor all the way through."
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "Some of the food we had was only acceptable, and the server brought out my husband's dessert with our food, so he had to start his meal with the dessert so it didn't melt. (Profiteroles) The server seemed a bit offended that we were having several appetizers and small plates instead of entrees, and she didn't hide it. We had had great experiences at Salut before, but this one put a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. I think we will stick to brunch on the patio from now on."

  • "I had a very nice lunch with friends last Saturday. My friends had not been there, but I had. I thought Salut would be a good restaurant to go with my friends to share my travels to France/Summer 2011. My friends are planning their first trip to France this summer and they wanted ideas and some of my insights, tips, etc.! I brought my lap top and shared my slide show of the sights and highlights in Paris, Provence, Nice and Monaco. I had a beautiful two weeks with another friend and one of my daughters. TSalut was a nice welcoming spot, good food , good service and a nice relaxing place to visit with friends!"

  • "I have been to Salut a few times and this time was no different... The service was a bit slow but the food and my drink were amazing. I would recommend the quice du jour, a house specialty with various ingredients - with the potatoes, of course. I had a Raspberry Sunrise - vodka, orange juice and raspberry puree, it was fantastic."
