A word from Salut Bar Americain - Edina
Salut Bar Américain is the brasserie down the block. Warm and welcoming, with an urbane wit and urban sensibility, it’s an afternoon hangout and an evening refuge. It’s your neighbor with a French accent. The setting evokes a classic Parisian bistro/restaurant. The service is spirited, confident and capably executed. And the cooking captures the freshness and hearty flavor of French cuisine. It’s the vibe inside that sets Salut apart from bowing maitre ‘d’s and sniffing sommeliers. From the welcoming wine list, to the playful décor, to the genial buzz in the dining room, Salut celebrates the French restaurant’s essential qualities while dispensing with the exclusionary ones. It demystifies French food by making it accessible and rewarding while poking fun at the stereotypes that surround it. Salut gives French dining a shot in the arm – while giving the French a gentle kick in the derriere. In this sense, Salut is a dual citizen: Authentically French – but proudly American.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I ordered the chicken crepe. I ate one in the restaurant and had a little bit of bone in it. I took it out of my mouth and did not think anything of it. I ate the other one at home and had a two inch sharp bone in it that I luckyily caught while I was eating it. Not cool! My sister in law ordered a burger medium well and it came out pink so she had to wait or another one. It was Sat so the kids eat free but we had to ask to have it taken off the bill."

  • "A great find! This was our first time at Salut! Everything about this place was perfect! The food, wine, and definitely the service !"

  • "Met a friend here for lunch, a return visit for me and first visit for my friend. Staff were very helpful identifying gluten-free options for her, checking with chef on details. She enjoyed an egg-topped salad, I was very happy with the lunch special - choice of soup/salad, one of two small entree options, and fruit or ice cream. The beef bourgonion-filled crepe was a perfect lunch-portion size and exquisite. We chose to sit outside and savor the late-summer weather, despite heavy-truck traffic noise on busy France Ave. The closely-spaced outdoor tables make conversations easily overheard. Servers were attentive without being intrusive."

  • "While the food was good and our waiter was great, $350 for 4 people was really expensive. I will return for special occasions, but for a dinner with friends, I will choose a more reasonably priced venue."

  • "Took a college bound grandson to lunch; server left us alone so we could decide menu choices (no hovering); food arrived in good time; we both enjoyed our choices; bonus was ordering terrific chocolate cake for dessert. Successful outing."

  • "Salut always delivers great food and it came through once more for our famiky gathering for my Dad's birthday. However, we were surprised that it took over an hour to get our food since we arrived at 7 on a Wednesday night and ordered burgers and sandwiches. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our food and the birthday dessert the waitress brought us as well."

  • "Our 34th Wedding Anniversary, so we came here because the menu has some unique items. Trendy bar scene with some unique drinks - but pricey. We were seated promptly. and waitress was pleasant. Wanted to order the special of the night, but they had already run out by 7:15 PM. The crabcake appetizer was very good, followed by an OK salad that was OK - but unusual - blending strawberries with Tomatoes in fresh greens with a nice cheese. The strawberry and tomatoe flavors to clashed. My Halibut was overdone, and the wife's Prime Rib was not a 'melt-in-your' mouth experience. Tougher than one would expect. Red Velvet Cake for desert was excellent. So it was a mixed bag. Manager was kind enough to comp us for the main dish."

  • "Great food and service! If you're a bourbon whiskey fan, the Ginger, Rogered cocktail is a delight. Oysters were served perfectly. Whether you order seafood or a burger, you can't go wrong here. And don't get me started on the french fries."

  • "Group of 5 had a great booth and a great waitsperson. I'm not a foodie, but I believe all were pleased."

  • "I introduced friends to Salut - the food and service helped make this get together memorable - I had lobster bisque, salad, mussells and frites - Salut earned high marks for food presentation and taste - tres bien fait et merci."

  • "I've had numerous good experiences at Salut...including New Years Eve with a larger group...and all have been wonderful. This last experience fell short of that by far. Not so much with the food...good...not great, but the service was so lacking in the level I would have expected. Missing were a timely initial greeting, server follow up, and the last check in before our server left for the evening WITHOUT telling us, or that another server might follow up. So odd, so disappointing."

  • "We went for my birthday dinner and it was wonderful! Ros was an awesome server with personality. My friend had the trout and said it was fabulous. I had the Friday special lobster and shrimp etoufee which was lovely!! We'll keep coming back for more!"

  • "Loved being able to take advantage of a happy hour that starts at three and offers such high quality seafood such as crab cakes, mussels and oysters for such a reasonable price ($9)! Huge portions, endless baguettes and fabulous blueberry mojitos. What more could you ask for!"

  • "We went to Salut for our anniversary. The food and service was A+ - excellent. They have us a very delicious dessert to take home - complimentary. So nice - we really appreciated it. However, we did find one fault - the tablecloth - under the white table covering was very dirty. We told our server - as we thought it was something that they could fix before their next customer. The only thing that would make this French restaurant better would be to serve chocolate croissants (chocolade du pain) very French."

  • "This is our go to place when we want burger and fries-the best! Great ambiance, great servers (Jason is our favorite), convenient parking. On several occasions we've ordered their entrees but decided the burgers were better value, entrees too expensive when they don't include sides (a la carte)"

  • "Food wasn't that great. I got the chicken club sandwich and the chicken was rubbery and the sandwich was extremely messy and hard to eat. My husband got the Salmon and it was ok but way too oily. Would have been better with a cream based sauce. Overall, we thought the prices were high for the quality."

  • "We went for a birthday and met with another couple. It was for a special event so we were willing to pay a little more and try a few new things like escargot and triple brie cheese. It was lovely."

  • "We were able to arrive earlier than our 6 reservation and were pleasantly surprised by Salut's happy hour menu! Plus Blue Points oysters were on special so we made a meal off the HH menu & oysters followed by their fabulous salads!"

  • "Had a wonderful time here. First time back in Minneapolis with my wife since we found out she was pregnant. My parents took us out to celebrate and to plan the holidays. The atmosphere was perfect -- great weather while we sat outside. Our server (I forget her name, but she was great) made sure our drinks (non-alcoholic for my wife of course) were always full but also didn't interrupt our conversation and celebration. She also had recommendations ready, which I always appreciate as an indecisive eater. My wife got the Poullet Pilliard (Thursday special) and I got the hanger steak frites. Only complaint is that they were out of the horseradish crust, which the waitress recommended highly and then didn't have. Wish I could taste it!"

  • "Although we've been to Salut several times for dinner, we had never gone for brunch. It was terrific... the pulled pork with egg was fantastic and my wife loved her omelet. We'll be back."

  • "We came here for a birthday celebration and everything we ate was quite delicious. The frog legs were perfect, as were the escargot. I personally really enjoyed the salad I got, which was a combination of asparagus, snap peas, lettuce, pancetta, egg and artichoke. The carbonara was delicious. It was pretty heavy (as the dish typically is) and the ingredients tasted fresh. This being said, the star of the meal was the dessert. The creme brulee was absolutely perfect. Cool, creamy, with a nice sugar crust on top. We will be coming back for sure."

  • "The food was good but the waitress was not. Brought me the wrong meal and seemed totally distracted. Didn't offer a dessert or anything for forgetting etc...."

  • "Really enjoyed the night. Food was very good and our server was very attentive. Pacing was on the slower side, but never felt like we were forgotten. It allowed us to have a meal with great conversation without feeling like they were trying to "turn the table". Would defiantly be back"

  • "My wife had the duck; I had the the Lobster/Shrimp/Crayfish special. Both were excellent although I had a bit of a time maneuvering the crayfish. Drinks well prepared...one of the best bars in town for a quality and generous pour. The restaurant can be noisy but on this occasion with an early reservation and many people eating outside, it was just fine. Service was spotless. One of our top ten in the Cities."

  • "My husband and I dined at Salut for our anniversary. We enjoyed the ambience - French decor and relatively quiet setting. The food was delicious. My husband said his steak was one of the best he's ever had. My shrimp and salmon salad was wonderful too. I would also recommend the apple & brie appetizer. We did have to wait a bit for our entrees but I think that's to be expected at a higher end place like Salut."

  • "I'm a fan of Salut and dine there regularly. Usually, everything is great, but this time, the service was absolutely abysmal! Our waitress completely abandoned our party, to the point where I had to pay for our meal at the front door. Completely unacceptable."

  • "We dined on a Monday night and I think they did not expect the numbers of guests that arrived. The soup special was not good--a lentil soup that had no lentils in it--just broth. My husband and I shared the special entree and we only received half of it to share. Waitress was terrific but the entire night was a mess. Waitress takes order (while trainee was watching), waitress places order, someone else brings order, eventually waitress checks back in... Just didn't work this night."

  • "We were at the Edina location for Sunday brunch. We had just placed our order when the power went out. The restaurant was quite full because it was about 11:30 a.m. There was no apparent panic by the staff. Our waitress came over and made sure we were comfortable as the air was now off. There were 2-3 larger parties of 10 - 12 people seated near use. The staff worked with the parties to get them to another one of Salut's restaurants that was about half a block away that wasn't effected by the power outage. Very orderly. They were able to complete our order and also continued to check on our comfort while the power was out. Well Done! The food was yummy as always. I'm never disappointed."

  • "The food was good but our server was the highlight. She went with our pace which was slow since we were a reunited group of friends who wanted to talk a lot. She didn't rush us and checked on us at the right times."

  • "Please update your menu! Also server was not friendly, hostess wanted to seat us next to large loud party when most of restaurant open - why?"
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "We sat on the patio which was lovely. However, the waitress out there was more than a little hard to get hold of. She botched our first drink order. Later, she finally took a second drink order near the end of our meal then promptly abandoned us for 25 minutes (and never did fill the drink order). So we paid and left. The food was hit or miss--my wife's salmon was good, but my carbonara pasta was greasy and heavy and extremely dull in flavor. I feel like they do the fish well, but that's about it. For what they charge, Salut must not get a whole lot of repeat business as it seems incredibly pricey for the relative standard fare."

  • "We came here on shorter notice for a late dinner (9pm) with a family member who came in from out of town. The service was prompt, with good insight on wine selections and described differences between types of steak offerings; the vegatable sides were outstanding, especially the roasted mushrooms, roasted cauliflower/bacon and potatotes and we shares them between us with plenty left over to take in a doggie bag. The entrees were generously sized and well prepared. Given the slower level of business at that time of night, it was a great place for a conversation as well. We always enjoy Salut, and this time was no exception."

  • "disappointed in the food. we ordered salads. the main course salads were very small and not very good. the cobb was TERRIBLE and the arugula with salmon and shrimp ($17) looked like a starter. don't go there for salads--it's good for burgers."
