A word from Salut Bar Americain - Edina
Salut Bar Américain is the brasserie down the block. Warm and welcoming, with an urbane wit and urban sensibility, it’s an afternoon hangout and an evening refuge. It’s your neighbor with a French accent. The setting evokes a classic Parisian bistro/restaurant. The service is spirited, confident and capably executed. And the cooking captures the freshness and hearty flavor of French cuisine. It’s the vibe inside that sets Salut apart from bowing maitre ‘d’s and sniffing sommeliers. From the welcoming wine list, to the playful décor, to the genial buzz in the dining room, Salut celebrates the French restaurant’s essential qualities while dispensing with the exclusionary ones. It demystifies French food by making it accessible and rewarding while poking fun at the stereotypes that surround it. Salut gives French dining a shot in the arm – while giving the French a gentle kick in the derriere. In this sense, Salut is a dual citizen: Authentically French – but proudly American.Continued

  • "I'm a fan of Salut and dine there regularly. Usually, everything is great, but this time, the service was absolutely abysmal! Our waitress completely abandoned our party, to the point where I had to pay for our meal at the front door. Completely unacceptable."

  • "We dined on a Monday night and I think they did not expect the numbers of guests that arrived. The soup special was not good--a lentil soup that had no lentils in it--just broth. My husband and I shared the special entree and we only received half of it to share. Waitress was terrific but the entire night was a mess. Waitress takes order (while trainee was watching), waitress places order, someone else brings order, eventually waitress checks back in... Just didn't work this night."

  • "We were at the Edina location for Sunday brunch. We had just placed our order when the power went out. The restaurant was quite full because it was about 11:30 a.m. There was no apparent panic by the staff. Our waitress came over and made sure we were comfortable as the air was now off. There were 2-3 larger parties of 10 - 12 people seated near use. The staff worked with the parties to get them to another one of Salut's restaurants that was about half a block away that wasn't effected by the power outage. Very orderly. They were able to complete our order and also continued to check on our comfort while the power was out. Well Done! The food was yummy as always. I'm never disappointed."

  • "The food was good but our server was the highlight. She went with our pace which was slow since we were a reunited group of friends who wanted to talk a lot. She didn't rush us and checked on us at the right times."

  • "Please update your menu! Also server was not friendly, hostess wanted to seat us next to large loud party when most of restaurant open - why?"

  • "We sat on the patio which was lovely. However, the waitress out there was more than a little hard to get hold of. She botched our first drink order. Later, she finally took a second drink order near the end of our meal then promptly abandoned us for 25 minutes (and never did fill the drink order). So we paid and left. The food was hit or miss--my wife's salmon was good, but my carbonara pasta was greasy and heavy and extremely dull in flavor. I feel like they do the fish well, but that's about it. For what they charge, Salut must not get a whole lot of repeat business as it seems incredibly pricey for the relative standard fare."

  • "We came here on shorter notice for a late dinner (9pm) with a family member who came in from out of town. The service was prompt, with good insight on wine selections and described differences between types of steak offerings; the vegatable sides were outstanding, especially the roasted mushrooms, roasted cauliflower/bacon and potatotes and we shares them between us with plenty left over to take in a doggie bag. The entrees were generously sized and well prepared. Given the slower level of business at that time of night, it was a great place for a conversation as well. We always enjoy Salut, and this time was no exception."

  • "disappointed in the food. we ordered salads. the main course salads were very small and not very good. the cobb was TERRIBLE and the arugula with salmon and shrimp ($17) looked like a starter. don't go there for salads--it's good for burgers."

  • "The food looked good, but everything we tried was tasteless. We have been here before and did not think much of the food. We had gift certificates and thought we would try it again. We will not ever go back."

  • "I was less than impressed for their Father's Day brunch. In the beginning of the brunch we could see some appetizing choices but when we got to it, it looked like they replaced the items by stopping at the local target. I also quickly noticed that they did not have what they said they were going to serve, and when dietary concerns are involved, this is a huge issue. When I called ahead I gave fair warning that I had my twin girls with me that are 4 and a half. At the Brunch anyone under 5 ate for free. However we still got charged, when I explained to them that they should not be charged the server gave a lot of attitude and was very disrespectful. They made me and my children feel awful for abiding by their "under 5" rule."

  • "We celebrated our 10 year anniversary with Salut and couldn't have been more impressed. From the moment the hostess greeted us, we received first class service. When we arrived at our booth, a subtle congratulatory sign greeted us. The entire staff really went out of their way to make our day special. On top of our delicious meals, we were treated to a complimentary dessert of our choice. We will definitely be returning to Salut and recommending them to everyone we can!"

  • "As an artist who was directly across from this restaurant at the Edina Art Fair, I couldn't wait to try it as I watched an endless stream of people come and go. We were also celebrating an anniversary and were treated like dignitaries by EVERY ONE! Food was great, the personal touch top notch and the staff couldn't have been better or friendlier. This one's a keeper. If there was a downside, it was packed and just a little noisy and fairly expensive. The positives overwhelmingly negate the negative. If I'm lucky enough to get juried into the 2015 art fair, I would be content to eat all my evening meals here as the menu was very diverse. Viva la Salut!!"

  • "Food was great, staff was fun. Loved the atmosphere, not taking themselves too seriously. We had a great time and would definitely go back."

  • "We came for dinner but did happy hour instead. The food is allays easy and tempting."

  • "My halibut with horseradish crust was well prepared, but partner's bouillabaisse was buried in tomatoes--it lacked that balanced Provençal rich flavor. The service was terrible. If a waiter is harried, I have sympathy, but this was a slow Monday night. "

  • "Everything was above average, with the exception of service. We did choose to dine outdoors, despite intermittent rain. Perhaps the rain explains the wait staff's reluctance to be attentive. Maybe management should have told us up front they could not guarantee quality service under the conditions or simply closed the patio?"

  • " First visit was great. This time the service was simply off. Sat at our table for about 10 min before anyone stopped. Ordered a shrimp cocktail and the server said she would be right back with bread and waters. Another 10 min or so, she stops back and says "you don't have your shrimp yet?", or water or bread my wife reminded her. We ordered Steaks that was delivered by another server and they were very good. Our server stopped back when we were almost done eating to inquire about the food. If one of the steaks had not been prepared correctly the food would have been cold before she inquired. A party at the next table left before they ate, sharing that their kids were hungry and couldn't wait so long to get them fed. "

  • "Nice free desert for the birthday boy. Also good menu choices for young children. Everyone was very full and happy!"

  • "Perhaps this was an off night but our experience was a very poor one. After waiting nearly an hour for our food we ordered additional drinks and asked for some additional bread. The bread never showed up. Had to flag down the server and inquire a couple of times about the order. The server was polite and apologetic and told us that the drinks would be "on the house". My wife ordered a salad and specifically indicated "no blue cheese" since she has an allergy. I order a bacon cheeseburger and indicated that I wanted it to be cooked medium. When our food finally did arrive the salad had blue cheese and my cheeseburger was over- cooked, well done and dry. Something obviously went wrong but we will not be returning any time soon."

  • "Was expecting great food and service only to be greatly disappointed. Not the Edina gem I expected. Grilled tuna salad was tiny and not flavorful. The service was painfully slow from start to finish! Won't return "

  • "I chose to take my family here for Mother's Day because my wife and I have had such great experiences at the St. Paul location, and it was far closer for everyone else. Unfortunately, the menu was significantly different, and not in a positive way. There were too many ingredients in the dishes, and the result was heavy, over-salted or bland food (with syrup that was not at all maple-y). After having praised the St. Paul location of Salut for being close to the best brunch I have had in the Twin Cities, I was embarrassed for recommending it. "

  • "Saturday or Sunday brunch could not be better anyplace than Salut! The choices are amazing and the specials are, well, special! It's our place to go after church Sunday early afternoons. We frequently bring friends as well. Great bloody mary, too!"

  • "Hands down the best wait staff and Bloody Mary in the twin cities."

  • "We went to Salut for mother's day. Restaurant did not open until 10a and there was a line out the door for those that wanted to get there early. Note to the manager; let the people in and serve mimosas or other drinks until the tables are ready. Food was fine, but slow, should not have been a problem for the first seating."

  • "Have great expectations especially oyster is one of the feature item here. Everything else is great except with the quality of the food. The escargot is blend and not as fresh as we think. Worst is 1 bad oyster out of the 6 ordered. That really ruined the whole meal! "
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "Expensive. Go there for lunch and save money. Our table was right next to the bathroom despite that we made reservations 2 weeks in advance and there were many empty tables when we were seated. "

  • "My steak was not cooked properly…twice. I ordered Medium rare and got medium well twice."

  • "Good food but overpriced, with very small portions."

  • "This restaurant is a wonderful place to meet for lunch. I have never been disappointed and have always been treated with a combination of professionalism and friendliness. "

  • "Great service. excellent atmosphere but a 18 dollar salad should be more than 4 leaves of romaine, an egg and some bacon. "
    Dined on 5/7/2014
  • "This was my first time at Salut and I really enjoyed it. I was looking for a new restaurant and this was great. Food was excellent and there was a nice menu. There were tall ceilings and normally I would have expected it to be loud but the noise level was good. "
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "Dinner was fantastic, great bread, but the dessert (creme brûlée) was over cooked and thus like an egg bake. They tries another, which was better but subpar. They did not charge and sent along some free chocolate cake, so they recover well... But it still brought down the evening."

  • "Chicken is very small, oily, comes with a few fries, $19.99 Red Stone, chicken is at least 50% larger, comes with side of potato and vegetable, $18.99. Quality of food and value is not in alignment compared to other restaurants. They need to upgrade quality of foo and quality of cooking. "
