A word from SALT Restaurant
We cook food grown on Vinalhaven and North Haven farms, or caught in the waters around here. Several of our producers deliver right to our kitchen door. Our suppliers work hard and care a lot about how they grow produce, how and where they raise animals, and how and where they harvest fish, lobster, and shellstock. We value that, so we try to make our dishes as good as the fresh products they bring to us. We do source from mainland farms, as well - mostly from places located within a 20 mile or so radius, although we serve amazing local and French cheeses, too.

We cook from scratch - making patés, curing fish, baking breads, pastries, and crackers, and making ice creams and desserts. We love to cook and eat, and we serve what we hope you'll enjoy.

As a seasonal resident of this great island I have enjoyed having Salt for eating out. The last two times I have been there were very pleasant, good atmosphere, quiet enough that we had great conversations at our table. The food was excellent, I wish you well over the winter and look forward to coming back in 2015.

nice room, well appointed with attention taken with detail..kind of noisy with close tables . real good spot on a slow night as wine list way above average and all food itmes well prepared and fresh. good wait staff but ownership did not seem vested in community which left me wondering..that being said would for sure go back..good stuff on a remote island

The new rice pudding dessert is unbelievably good. And you know, if these cats can make rice pudding exciting, everything else is guaranteed good. The halibut, lobster cream soup, and mixed green salad from Sparkplug farm shined for us. The clean antique atmosphere is unique. Servers were very professional and engaged. We will come back to VH just for a meal at SALT!

Our brunch at Salt was the highlight os a perfect day on the coast of Maine. We took the ferry from Rockland and after a short walk from the landing arrived at Salt. The restaurant is small with 10-12 tables with a casual , quirky decor that included a French carousel pig sitting in the window. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. For our main courses we chose the lobster eggs benedict and leek and mushroom quiche. The eggs were perfectly poached sitting on house made English muffins and succulent lobster from the local waters. The quiche was excellent as well with a tender crust and creamy custard filling. The piece de resistance was Alyson's caramel "sticky bun" made with brioche dough. We will definitely return.

Wonderful fresh local food in a beautiful, tasteful setting. The kitchen is splendid and brings more than a hint of sophistication to life on this glorious island. Things that stand out are the chef's delicious 'taster' before the meal is served and the elegant cheese and cold cuts plates. Also of special note: the local Halibut early in the summer, the best oysters I have ever eaten, and the cheeseburgers made with local beef. Great addition to the VH summer scene.

it was a gem of a find, we went to a Sunday brunch and they cook with all fresh and locally sourced ingredients. They are cooked to perfection, with a subtle touch to enhance natural flavors. butter poached lobster eggs benedict was sublime and so was kale salad with hazelnuts and goat cheese. pastry basket was just about the right size, beet bread, strawberry muffin and currant scone

Best smoked salmon I've had in a long time including Zabars. Really delicious. The problem is too many of the accompanying portions are teeny teeny tiny. As in the tiny bit of whipped cream cheese on the side, the tiny bit of duck egg salad. 3 crackers. Had to ask for more. The chicken liver mousse, divine, had to ask for more bread slices/toasts as once again there were only 3. The salmon dish needs lemon and some chopped red onion & capers would be more than appropriate. Fries ok, had to ask for ketchup, served a tiny amount. Burger was big, didn't care for the short ribs inside it. Our server was scattered. Had to go get my own lime for my tomato juice. Good food but needs some better service & a 2nd look at those portions.

Perhaps if they iron out a few kinks, including how to get the food and drinks out faster, and added some more space, it will live up to the expectations, but Salt is not quite there yet. $222 for three people in that kind of setting is not something that I would want to do often. The restaurant is tiny and loud and crowded. I would not say to anyone on the mainland or maybe even North Haven island that they must go to Salt right away. The most positive thing, however, is that the food and the drinks are very good; there is no other restaurant on Vinelhaven that would come close. For these reasons, I would recommend it to a friend although I would do so with some reservation.

What a wonderful place on Vinalhaven! We started with an amuse-bouche of dilled creme fraiche and radish then delicious savory cream puffs and the thinnest breadsticks I've ever seen. I had oysters with 2 different sauces-beautifully presented. The hake on a bed of beans and veg was described as excellent. The burger was perfectly cooked. Wine was affordable with a varied list. Dessert were over the top. The strawberry-rubarb ciafoutis with basil ice cream was the star dessert. Two issues though whenever the bar person makes a drink the noise is overwhelmiing and the french press coffee was cold

Yes -- hours away from any metropolitan center, a restaurant that can put itself up against anyone -- yet fits perfectly into the informality of Vinalhaven. The food is local, though not aggressively so; prepared with care and creativity and close attention to not merely the stars (which are great -- e.g., the halibut, the steak frites) but the supporting cast (the vanilla parsnip(?) creamy mash under the lobster tails -- wow; the potato salad (!) next to the cured salmon -- perfect). And the wait staff a smiling, helpful pleasure. Incidentally, the cocktails are brilliant. Worth a very, very long trip. And then you wake up on Vinalhaven…exquisite, quiet, wonderful Maine.

We have visited twice. The food overall was excellent, however the little chef selections prior to the meals have been overwhelmed with the butter taste and we feel that could be greatly reduced or even better eliminated altogether. Next time we come we will ask not to have that if you feel you do not want to change the recipe.

Excellent local food, artistically prepared and presented. Excellent wine list with by request excellent wine by the glass pairings. Portions are small, but I see this as quality vs quantity. Housed in an old apothecary. Service is extremely friendly created a relaxed atmosphere. We both had the house smoked salmon appetizer which was well prepared with imaginative pairings. The lobster tail entree beautifully presented on a base of pureed parsnips and ringed with grilled zucchini. The panna cotta dessert was a decedent choice presented on a rhubarb coulee. The in house baked breads were a treat.

Our party of 4 each had an appetizer, main & dessert -all were excellent & perfectly portioned(i.e. not too big) so that one can enjoy multiple courses. The halibut was particularly outstanding - crispy skin but moist and succulent inside. Caramel lavender ice cream - heavenly. All plates went back to the kitchen empty. Service was attentive, swift and professional. Great to have this new kid on the block. The only complaint is the noise level. The restaurant was busy but not completely full on this first official opening weekend; the noise level made it hard to converse; some sound mitigation in this hard-surfaced space would be welcome.
