Salt House Tavern - A 75-seat, contemporary tavern housed in an old printing press warehouse built in the 1930’s. Exposed brick, original hardwood floors, 12 foot windows and oversized rusted iron girders. Contemporary American fare ranging from raw bar plateaus to local cheeses, appetizers and heartier main dishes. Wines from all over the world, local beers and an extensive cocktail list.   • "We went to Salt House for our 35th wedding anniversary upon a recommendation. The food was excellent, the manager brought us two glasses of champagne on the house. The only thing that made it less than perfect was the location of our table. We were seated in the very back corner next to a very large happy loud group of young people and it was very hard to converse with my husband. If we had a table upstairs or in the front of the restaurant, it would have been perfect."

  • "... but bring your earplugs - the acoustics seem to amplify the noise level. it was SO LOUD while we ate - we tho't maybe it would calm down later. But even when the restaurant started to empty and we lingered over delicious cappuccinos and delectable dessert - it was really loud. that's my only complaint - but again, the food was outstanding, as was the service - and the look of the place is cool. I just don't like super noisy places, to have a relaxing conversation."

  • "My office is next to Salt House, and I had been meaning to go for the longest time, so when a business associate took us out to lunch, I suggested Salt House. It was definitely a good choice. Salt House is modern and chic, and at the same time, cozy. It has the appropriate ambiance for business associates to meet and lunch together. It was 1:45 pm when we arrived, so it had quiet down, and it was easy for us to talk. The menu wasn't overwhelming with choices, but it had enough varieties to pick from. Unfortunately, they ran out of Mahi Mahi, so I ordered Ahi Nicoise Salad, which had blue lake beans, marble potatoes, boquerones, tomatoes and egg. The presentation was beautiful, and most importantly, it was delicious."

  • "This was my 5th time at Salt House. It has been more than a year ago that I was last there. The food was excellent. I had the Mahi Mahi and it was flaky and delicious. The greens that was part of the dish was a good compliment to the fish and made for a very satisfying lunch for a starving person, which I was. If I had stopped at the entree, it would have been a flawless experience but I ordered a dessert to share with my friend and we were both disapponted with the dessert. Overall, excellent experience besides the dessert and I would go there again without hesitation."

  • "I picked this place to take my aunts, uncles and grandparents for a birthday dinner. We had a group of 8 people and it was perfect! When we got there, our table was ready and we were seated right away. Our waiter came over immediately and he was one of the best waiters I've ever had! He knew LITERALLY everything about the menu, from the exact farm where the beef was raised to the exact way the chefs cook and present each dish. His descriptions were so thorough and amazing we barely had to look at the menu to make a decision. I wish I could remember his name. Everything we ordered was great. We also had fun, delicious, original cocktails. Overall really great service, ambience and food and I will definitely come back!"

  • "I could not believe how much attitude the little asian hostess gave me. She rolled her eyes at me which where I'm from is incredibly discrespectful. As a former hostess and waitress I would never be so rude to a patron. Will not dine here again just to avoid her. Also the place was super packed to the point where they have people sitting sandwiched between the staircase and the window in about a 3 foot wide space."

  • "The restaurant was casual but still elegant, the food quality was excellent. I had a mixed green salad with apples and nuts, followed by a well portioned piece of cod. Add two glasses of chardonnay and a glass of port for dessert the bill was around $80 w/o tip. There are many great restaurants in SF, and I would definitely add this one to the list"

  • "I ordered my burger well done and it came out raw. They very quickly made me a new burger and no less than three different people aplogized for the error. Prior to the undercooked food, our server was pretty quick coming and going and hard to find. It was very noisy and hard to talk. This was my second visit to this reataurant and unfortunately it was not as good as my first. I may try them again in the future, we will see."

  • "This was a second trip for me and just as enjoyable as the first. The restaurant is a little cramped, which stopped me from giving 5 stars. Food was very good, and all four of us loved it. The Baby Beet Salad with goat cheese burrata was excellent and the Cauliflower Soup, too. Noise level was a bit high for conversation, but we managed. If the space weren't quite to tight, perhaps the noise level wouldn't be so intrusive. All in all, a good experience."

  • "I made this reservation to celebrate a friend's birthday. I mentioned this to the hostess & pointed out the birthday girl. The very first thing our server did was walk up and announce to the birthday girl that they aren't a "singing restaurant." It was rude and unnecessary. We were just hoping for a candle, if anything. The rest of the service was well below par for such snobbery - It took forever to order and get food. We had 5 people, they gave us 4 dinner rolls. The second time we asked if we could have another roll and they dropped/threw another loaf of 4 rolls onto the center of the table. We also wondered if the slow service was a ploy to amp up the drink order, but then watched our bottle of wine sit at the bar for at least 20 mins."

  • "We were a large of 8 party. The staff at the Salt House were so accommodating. After pushing back our reservations an hour, we were able to enjoy dinner and a decent pace with out rushing. One good thing about having a larger party is that you can order and try different things off the menu. Some of the notable dishes were the poutin, beet salad chicory salad, black cod, scallops, and faro."

  • "The bar and hostess staff seemed disorganized. We arrived early for our reservation, so we sat at the bar. The bartender got my drink order wrong twice and they were out of the scotch my companion ordered off the bar menu. Once we were seated and settled, a waitress came and asked us if we've move from our six top to a four top so they could accommodate another party. We were moved to a table in the middle of traffic, and we had to request another open four top more out of the way. Despite the inconvenience and poor first impression, the manager did not offer a round or other gesture. Once the musical tables were over, the food and service were good, but overall not level of service I would expect for a $300 check for a party of 4."

  • "It's my second visit at Salt House. The first visit, we waited for about twenty minutes even if we have our reservation but this time, we are seated immediately. They gave us bread which didn't happen in our first visit. But I am disappointed with the quality of the steak and fries that I had on my second visit. The first time I had it, the sauce was full of flavor, fresh greens, the potatoes are yummy and the steak is the perfect medium rare, but this time the food is not as good as the first one."

Waited over 30 minutes for our table and then well over another hour before my lunch arrived (hers came after about 30 minutes), although the restaurant was no longer busy by that time. We arrived at 12:25 and left over two hours later, but it was not a relaxing time! Although I have enjoyed Salt House in the past--the presentation for oysters is particularly delightful--the food is not good enough to redeem an experience like this! The restaurant ultimately gave me my meal and the waitress apologized for the kitchen, but she was mostly scarce during the delay, as she was powerless to get the kitchen's attention. I doubt I'll be back,"
