Diner Reviews
  • "Great setting. Good margaritas. Great guac. My fish dish was good, my friend's a little undercooked. It was a slow night so they decided to close the kitchen early and we were gently urged to order earlier than we wanted. Our reservation was at 7 so it wasn't like we walked in late. as much as I understand the concern for closing down things early for THEM...I just didn't like feeling rushed. Then there was this overhanging/lingering /unspoken feeling that we had to speed up eating and I just don't appreciate that when I pay my good working dollars to go out and dine. I really like Salpicon, but every time I go there ...one thing is off . I would be a more frequent diner, as it's in my neighborhood, but they always just a little off"

  • "We went with a party of four and all had 7 course tasting menus paired with wines. Great range, great food, pretty plates, nice preparation, and thoughtful wine pairings that really enhanced the meals. And all that was enhanced by a sweet and attentive server. Definitely one of the city's best for high end Mexican."

  • "Our only regret is that the incredibly extensive wine list includes almost nothing affordable. The food is imaginative, exquisitely prepared and quite a treat. But even at this very high level of dining experience the wines are inappropriately out of reach cost-wise."

  • "We have a lovely meal. Perhaps not superlative, but very good. My colleague had the tenderloin with cheese and sauce and I had the quail with a tasty, spicy brown sauce. The knowledgeable sommelier was helpful and very conversant with across the spectrum of the fine well rated Wine Spectator list."

  • "Salpicon offers dozens of tequilas varying in age and price from $9 to $200/serving. Our server seemed to be knowledgeable but that could also be because we know nothing about tequila. Our food was better than expected, but was expected to be good based on the price. The guacamole was fresh and awesome! ($9) I ordered the quail ($33) and it was interesting, but the sauce that came on the plate tasted like soy sauce. Bad. The pork tenderloin was served over a cilantro and avocado aioli which was very good! Overall, I'd say it was a good dinner with a relatively quiet atmosphere. I would come back for a couple margaritas for sure!"

  • "Excellent, as always. Haute cuisine Mexican dishes of great subtlety and extraordinary flavors. There is the occasional misstep, but the quality is consistently high. One of the finest, most extraordinary wine lists in Chicago (or anywhere else)! And an incredible collection of tequilas. Friendly and attentive service in a cozy and colorful space makes a great ambiance."

  • "We had a delicious dinner at Salpicon, we turned the decision making over to our waiter who was wonderful. Started with chips, fresh guacamole and a nice spicy salsa, on two two appitizers (I'd recommend the spinach salad), a shared entree and shared desert. Very nice, will go again."

  • "This restaurant continues to be a favorite for my husband and I. The food is consistently great, wine parings are spot on, and the staff are friendly. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone."

  • "Salpicon is our favorite Mexican restaurant. The chili relleno is back M, T--which is great news. The menu has been updated and is improved. We never have a bad meal here--specials are unusual and wonderful. Highly recommend."

  • "This is the first time we've been to this restaurant. The food is excellent. It's not your typical Mexican restaurant. The steak is outstanding. The remaining appetizers we shared were also great. The wine list is amazing but generally very pricey. Highly recommended."

  • "A great place for a wonderful meal. We have had several stellar meals at Salpicon, and can hardly wait for our next one. Not inexpensive, but worth every nickel!!"

  • "Having brought a group of folks to this restaurant 5 yrs after leaving Chicago, I was slightly hesitant, just based on recent reviews. But, for my party of 7, we had a fabulous time! It was not super crowded, so the noise wasn't bad, but we all had delicious meals, as well as our appetizers. I think 3/4 of us ordered off the special menu. Everyone raved about it. We'll be back. Thanks!"

  • "Ben a fan of this place for a while. Great high end "real" mexican fare - not your burritto type place. Unfortunately went on Valentine's Day so some of the best items werent available and the quality wasnt the usual level. Usually this place is worth the trip so I'll give it a pass on a hallmark holiday."

  • "Had the best Valentine's Day dinner here with my hubby! Everything including my Margarita was wonderful! I feel do lucky to have this delightful restaurant in my hood! Can't wait to go back!!"

  • "The food was truly inedible. I had the duck which was rubbery and the mole sauce had no flavor. The oysters were drowning in cheese, so much so that neither the oysters nor spinach could even be tasted. The molten chocolate cake (how can you screw that up?) was so overcooked and broken, that I didn't have more than one bite. The server could care have cared less about our meal and it took 30 minutes for them to serve the soup. There are so many fantastic places in Chicago, I can't imagine ever returning. Go to Topolobampo or Frontera if you really want upscale Mexican. They have this place beat."

  • "Discovered this wonderful restaurant on Open Table - researched the menu - and gave it a try. The small venue offers intimacy and warm ambiance, though it is quite popular so during the dinner hour it can be busy with a bit more surrounding noise than I would have preferred. The food was out of this world: special short ribs seemed to be a very popular dish and with good reason - meat melted in your mouth. We also enjoyed the tiger prawns in sweet garlic and chiles - wonderful and well prepared. A big shout out to the guacamole! I never eat guacamole but felt compelled to order it when observing virtually every other table ordering it. Incredible flavor and addicting! Spice sensitive people be careful - watch type of peppers used."

  • "We liked the small yet quiet atmosphere of the restaurant. The margarita options with the tequila selections are endless. We shared a number of appetizers including the oysters, Camerones al Carbon, Guacamole and Seviche. My fiance had the Cod and I had quail which were both great. The cod was more creamy and mild, whereas my quail dish had more spice to it which I prefer. We'll definitely be back"

  • "Our meal had some good elements that just didn't really come together in the end. The capers in the almond mole that accompanied the duck were creative and added a mustard flavor, but overall, some depth was missing. The chicken mole similarly lacked richness. Best item was probably the lime serrano sorbet for dessert, which had a perfect hint of spice along with the sweetness of the rest of the plate. But how great a recommendation is it for a non-bakery's food when the dessert is the best buy? While this was not an outright bad meal, there are better upscale Mexican food places in Chicago."

  • "Went to this place during restaurant week with my husband. Food was great and the service was good. My only criticism is that the tables are too close and it is too loud as a result."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 17 year anniversary at Salpicon. Dinner was awesome and James our server provided excellent tequila recommendations."

  • "Ostiones con chipotles are back on the menu! Chef Priscila's version of oysters rockefeller, oysters topped with spinach and Chihuahua cheese, sauced with a chipotle cream and baked. Positively yummy!!"

  • "I took my friend here for her birthday because I had just moved to the area and we like to explore new things. It was a bummer. The restaurant was empty - which is never a good sign. The food was fine. Nothing to write home about. The squash blossoms tasted soapy. But what really threw me for a loop was the sticker shock. It was WAY overpriced. I spend half as much at Henri which is 10 times higher quality. So I don't recommend it and I won't be going back."

  • "We have dined at Salpicon several times in the past and have always been delighted with the meal. Their appetizers are spectacular, and worth a trip alone. Entrees? We always order the filet topped with chihuahua cheese and with a great sauce, though we SWEAR next time we'll order something different because everything that everyone else orders looks wonderful. We'll be back!!"

  • "One of the best Mexican restaurants with an interesting, creative, menu. Food is always well prepared and the servers know their menu and wine list. A step well beyond traditional foods and the tastes are a treat to your palate. The cod preparation was wonderful and the habanero sauce was spicy but not overwhelmingly hot. The double pork chop, enjoyed by a friend was abundant and produced perfectly. Over time, Salpicon stands out as one of Chicago's destination restaurants."

  • "This was a wonderful experience overall. The ambiance is okay, your average cloth covered chairs in a smallish dining area. It was a little underwhelming at first glance. However the food...delicious! All six of us had something different and everyone enjoyed their food. I loved my short ribs and asparagus. My only knock would be that I felt my mashed potatoes were not as thick as I like. They have a huge tequilla list and a pretty extensive wine list as well. Service was attentive and knowledgeable as well. Overall, I would certainly reccomend."
