A word from Saloon Restaurant
Entering the Saloon, a family owned restaurant since it opened in 1967 is a bit like stepping into Philadelphia's past. Dark oak paneling, shiny brass and authentic local antiques create a warm congenial and casual atmosphere. The choice of two comfortable dining rooms each with its own vintage bars make dining and conversation a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Both bars feature a delicious and moderately priced food menu. The menu is Italian with seafood specials such as grilled octopus and dover sole. Saloon steaks and veal chops are legendary. Many prefer a plate of fried long hot peppers to compliment the steaks. All desserts and gelatos are made on the premises daily. The Saloon is a Philadelphia neighborhood bar and restaurant with a national reputation. And the parking is FREE!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "A great South Philly gem. Fabulous food and an incredible staff. The sea scallops are the best I've ever had. We will definately return again and again!"

  • "Group of 6 for a 40th birthday celebration this past weekend. The service was impeccable, food delicious and ambiance outstanding with a 3 piece band playing in the bar area. We all have a wonderful experience and cannot wait to go back. A huge thanks to The Saloon for a great night out!"

  • "Have been going here for many years for lunch and dinner with friends or for business. The staff is attentive. They managed our requests without delay on a busy Saturday night. The food did not disappoint. I always enjoy the greens and peppers. The octopus was also quite tasty. I had several first timers at the table and they were all smiles throughout the evening. Take time to experience the building both upstairs and down. It is a neighborhood gem with a staff that is well cast in supporting roles to let you relax and enjoy the guests at your table. We grazed our way around the menu and all portions arrived hot and in sync for the whole table to enjoy A good value and no worries. Next time in the plan is to sit down and just say, feed me."

  • "We always loved the Saloon, but the last few times we went it was marginal at best. They were back on top form on Saturday night!"

  • "The food was great. Our waitress was outstanding. If every restaurant had someone like her working there they would do well. The appetizer was pricey. I should've asked before ordering. Normally I wouldn't get an appetizer but it was a special occasion. The pasta portion was a little small would've liked to seen more pasta. The mushrooms on the Veal dish were a little too much. They smothered the Veal I had to take them off. The room right next to the bar was a little loud."

  • "This place is a hidden gem! Thank God for Open Table or I never would have found it. THe langostino were delicious, as was the scallop special. The only part of my meal I didn't love were the grilled shrimp which tasted frozen. Service was prompt, food was fabulous, and an overall great dining experience."

  • "If you are looking for great Italian food and a fun alternative to the expense-account restaurants in Center City, venture down to South Philly for a slice of real Philadelphia. The locals don't bite and the neighborhood has a special character that enhances your visit. The Saloon has parking (rare down here) and the venue is historic old world charm at its best. The staff is engaging and helpful and the food...you will have to look far and wide to top it."

  • "Had a wonderful dinner on Friday evening prior to the Sting/Paul Simon concert. We thoroughly enjoyed our two dishes-NY Strip Steak in mushroom sauce while my wife had the Lobster Americana dish. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and did not miss a beat. Desserts are offered from tray-we chose the Cococut Custard Pastry-outstanding. There are two floors with a full bar on each floor-very warm, old style dark paneling in a rich saloon style atmosphere. Would absolutely go back on our next trip to Philadelphia."

  • "Every time I return to Saloon, I smile. Saloon is a South Philadelphia classic. The food is superb, the cocktails are generous, and the service is first class. Definitely get the hot antipasto for two to share. I'm also a huge fan of the lobster fra diablo and the veal chop. Save room for dessert because they are all really good plus they make an awesome cappuccino. Saloon sets a high standard in every way and it lives up to that standard each visit. That's why I keep coming back for more. I love this place!"

  • "Had three great meals. Great spot for a business dinner, great service. We were able to talk without any disruption and we were able to talk at a normal level without straining to hear the other persons. Will definetly be back with other clients. Thanks"

  • "This was fine for our group of 6 as tgere was something on the menu for everyone from 87 years old to 29 year old. Not handicap friendly tho, bathroom not on ground floor. Food was good but my fish was served like warm. Service very good"

  • "I was very excited to try this restaurant and was a little disappointed. I ordered a fish dish that was just okay. I found it to very bland. From the food the food to the service and ambiance, I was less than impressed. I thought the entire experience was underwhelming. I've had much better in Philadelphia. If I went back I would hang at the bar and grab drinks. That's it."

  • "Have not been to the restaraunt in years. Pleasantly surprised. The food was nothing short of fantastic. The place is still great to be seen. Jazz band was playing - which we loved! Worth every penny. Cannot wait to return."

  • "It was my husbands birthday, and his first time there. I've been there several times, all during the luncheon time frame, and it has been a good 9-10 years since my last visit. The food is awesome, really good .I was a bit concerned with the social aspect. Our servers were nice and receptive, however, the I'll say Management staff was a bit cold. Certainly not welcoming, and made to feel as though they were trying to nurture us as repeat customers."

  • "With all the new "in" restaurants in Philadelphia, people forget about the really good old standards. The Saloon has been great for many years."

  • "I last dined at the Saloon 30 years ago when I did not live in Philadelphia. Now that I have moved here, I plan on frequenting this restaurant regularly. The food is exceptional and the service was extremely friendly. Prices were ok, not great. However, the quality of the food was really great. We highly recommend this place for all sorts of occasions. The eggplant parm is one of the best ever. Their red sauce is fantastic!"

  • "I drove from my New York to take my daughter and a cousin out to celebrate my daughter's 24th birthday. I alerted the restaurant that it was her birthday when I made the reservation. When I checked in they were ready for us and immediately asked about whose b Rich day it was and were friendly and welcoming. The waitress and hostess were lovely, the waitress offered to adjust meals to accommodate special tastes. The host owner came over to chat and offer birthday wishes and even gave her an extra dessert in a to-go bag. I rarely if ever see kindness and service like that. It was a beautiful and memorable evening and we will definitely return. This is a gorgeous restaurant - a step back into history's beautiful past."

  • "Im not saying the restaurant wasn't nice. The atmosphere was very nice. The employees were very attentive also. I have heard mixed reviews but some have said that the food was 'really good" so we decided to try. The food was good but not great. Especially for the price. I can think of many places that have the same atmosphere, with better food and better prices. Probably won't go there again. Again, it wasn't a bad experience. Just a little too pricey for what you get."

  • "This was a great time. The waitress and everyone that served us were great . After dinner we went to the bar to have a drink and it was enjoyable and no one rushed us I would recommend this to everyone. We will definately be back!"

  • "Very loud. Not good for quiet meal. Overall food was excellent. Fish received by one member was to be filleted but still had numerous bones. Advised server and received free dessert and coffee for that person. Ceasar Salad was not that good. Did not taste like ceasar..very vinegary. Lettuce had numerous core pieces. Price very high...4 people over $400 (includes tip). Only had 1 drink and cheap bottle of wine. Not as good as past visits"

  • "The service was phenomenal for our party of 12. We were seated in an alcove away from the main dining area which made it feel as if we were the only diners in the restaurant. The servers were very accommodating and responsive to our needs. The appetizers and the food were excellent except for 1 entree, the veal loin chop, which was a little tough-but after the appetizers (langoustines and a shared octopus salad and the Italian bread with olive oil and basil) I was satiated. A large number in our party ordered the scallops special, which was done to perfection with a sauce to die for! All in all everyone had a wonderful time. I look forward to our next visit and hope to see Osso bucca on the menu!"

  • "We had a great time. There were 11 of us on our annual Christmas dinner. The food was very good and the service was excelkent. Laura was our waitress and was very attentive and patient with our very loud group. We were in a great little room upstairs. The atmosphere was perfect for a boys night out. The saloon is not cheap but its always a great experience. It had been 5 yrs since my last visit but we'll be back soon. There were 5 from our group who had never visited the Saloon before but all planned on coming back soon. Thanks for a great night out. Dave"

  • "Have not been here for about a year, as as I thought the Saloon is still a great spot although away from the main city I find that my customers always enjoy the food and atmosphere at the Saloon. Recomend dining upstairs, the bartender of 20 years plus was awesome with a history lesson"

  • "Loved the ambience. Service was pretty bad...took about 5 minutes for anyone to take our drink order and another 5 for them to bring the drinks over. The food was AVERAGE...definitely not worth the very high prices!"
