Diner Reviews
  • "We tried Salar for lunch while visiting Downtown Dayton today. It was spot-on for me. I am a vegetarian and I like flavorful food. I had the grilled tofu with barley and it was wonderful. Just a word of warning to my meat and potatoes fans, if you don’t like lots of flavor and varied spices, don’t go. The mixture of spices was superb. My wife had the shrimp skewer and she thought her dish was excellent also. Great find in the old Oregon historical district on 5th street. Will come again."

  • "My husband and I took our young kids (ages 4-1/2 years and 18 months). Salar only has one high chair so if you're bringing a young toddler, make sure you reserve the high chair! Otherwise, your child will be sitting on your lap for the meal and you will not enjoy it. My husband and I have traveled to S. America many times, and the food here took us back to the delicious flavors from our travels. Great variety. Food came out very fast (we went on a Saturday night at 6:15pm), and we were done with appetizers and entrees by 7:30pm. No dedicated kids menu but they do cheese pizza and chicken fingers off-menu (the cheese pizza was huge). The mojito and pisco sour were terrific. Highly recommend. Will certainly be back."

  • "The food was wonderful and so were the drinks. It was more than a meal it was an experience."

  • "Do you ever tire of being rushed in a restaurant...the waiter constantly asking if everything is OK, swiping your plates away as you take the last bite? Salar is a dining experience much like being in Europe....the food is outstanding...portions are freshly prepared, at the right temperature and perfectly sized. The wait staff is not obtrusive but still remains present enough so you don't feel abandoned. A perfect gem of a place right here in Dayton, Ohio."

  • "I used to live in Maryland and frequented quite a few restaurants in MD and DC. Dayton simply cannot be compared or measured up. However, Salar gave Dayton something to brag about. The food, the service, the ambience are just as good as what you can find in DC."

  • "We went to Salar on a recommendation from a friend. The food was so yummy. Our server, Calvin, was very knowledgeable and recommended great drinks and desserts."

  • "We were in town for a show at Fraze Pavillion for the first time and checked out Open Table to see what was available. Man, what a great find! Cool funky little joint with great service. Serious mixology with a beautiful bar and outstanding dinner special. The humus bread service was great and the paella special was phenominal. We will definitely go back."

  • "I always look forward to a meal at Salar and as always I was not disappointed. The small plates offer interesting choices you will not find anywhere else. Their cocktail and wine lists are wonderful."

  • "We have been a little nervous anticipating our move from a very large city to Dayton. Came here a little early to get the lay of the land and were pleasantly surprised that the first place we ate (Salar) was excellent! We were greeted in an upscale lobby by the bar, taken through the restaurant to the back courtyard (there are TWO outdoor eating areas) and seated in a comfortable area that, even full would be quiet and romantic. The food options were eclectic and a little edgy. Really nice and excellent service from not only our waitress but everyone with whom we had contact."

  • "I booked a table for my sister's bachelorette party. Most of the attendees were from out of town -- Akron, Columbus and Cleveland, to be specific. We did experience a hiccup in our plans when the taxi service I scheduled in advance fell through, but the staff at Salar was patient and gracious as we scrambled to acquire last-minute transportation options. When we arrived, we were immediately seated and our server was excellent in her ability to make appropriate suggestions for our party. We ended up splitting several fantastic small plates and were all quite happy and full when we left. There were a couple ladies in our group who looked down their nose a bit at the idea of fine dining in Dayton, and I was glad to have changed their minds!"

  • "Definitely enjoying the new Friday lunch at Salar. Great for indoor or outdoor seating, and with free valet, parking is never a problem. The new lunch menu with new plant-based options is generous and reasonable for a fine dining experience."

  • "My husband and I decided to try dinner here for the third time. It was as I remembered it. The menu offers the same dishes that are not seasonal and too heavy for summer. I immediately eliminated any entree that included mashed potatoes and creams which was most. I can't get past the weird mixture of heavy cream based things with exotic spices. I had the beef on skewers and could have done without the sauce. The grape tomato side was not a good contrasting accompaniment and the risotto was that nasty, creamy stuff which I was trying to carefully avoid when I ordered. The pizza my husband had was overloaded with toppings making it had too handle and adding to that "too heavy" character that is prevalent in this place."

  • "Delicious. Great service, lovely ambiance, amazing food. If you're looking for a twist on the traditional you found it. We go out to dinner every Friday, this has been our best Friday yet. There's a great variety of options, they even have options for the gluten sensitive and the vegetarian/vegan crowd. New favorite, no contest."

  • "Thanks for another great experience, you never disappoint. We sat out on the back patio, it was very quiet and allowed my wife and I to enjoy a nice laid back dinner. We have had several of their signature cocktails and they are all wonderful. We started with the empanadas and the chicken chicharrones, the empanadas are always very full and flavorful and the chicharrones were new for us this time. Marinated strips of chicken and then deep fried with a cilantro/chili dipping sauce. Great choice and highly recommend it. Normally we get separate entrees but this night we chose to get the carnitas pizza. It has pork, chipotle marinara, mozzarella cheese, queso fresco cheese, red onion and cilantro. Another wonderful experience!! "

  • "I really do love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The chicken chiccharones was tasty but chewy. The calamari appetizer was very good. The drinks were excellent."

  • "Our reservations were at 7:30 on a moderately busy night. Our food was very good, our waiter was very attentive and good, however, the food took far too long."

  • "Generally we really enjoy dinner at Salar. The menu is imaginative, with something for just about everyone and the food has been excellent. The noise level can be too high for us; some noise-absorbing material would be helpful. The manager is usually very attentive and extremely accommodating. For Salar: Unfortunately, our last dinner at Salar was truly unpleasant. The waiter was consistently slow (really SLOW!), and sometimes seemed to be unaware we were there. In addition, a group which came from the bar was extremely LOUD, which lasted throughout the meal and diminished our enjoyment. The hostess was wonderful and consented to re-seat us, but it wasn't far enough away. We will try again; We do like Salar."

  • "Our second experience at Salar, where we chose a restaurant for out-of-town friends to enjoy, was everything they were requesting: good food, good atmosphere, good wine. So happy we chose it as our Dayton stand-out."

  • "I always love to try to find cool, local restaurants. Salar didn't disappoint us! The interior design is very contemporary and welcoming. It is much larger than it appears when you first enter. It was chilly outside so the patio area wasn't open but it looked inviting. We would definitely revisit if in Dayton again. "

  • "Service was slow and food was just ok. Nothing too special here and it was hard to carry on a conversation or hear the waitress, who was very slow to bring the right check. There are better options in Dayton. "

  • "We dined on one of the busiest days of the year... MOTHER'S DAY! The crowd was light. We received service right away. The food is ALWAY EXCEPTIONAL!!! I am never disappointed when I dine at Salar. "

  • "Not many restaurants in the area do brunch. It was nice to have Salar open for the Mother's Day occasion. The food was good and the atmosphere, on the back patio with beautiful sunshine, was exquisite!"

  • "Been there twice now, once with a party of three and most recently just my wife and I. Can tell you that their wedge salad and carnitas pizza are both outstanding. Their ravioli's are also. It's deceptively large, with different rooms, patios. Nice bar. It is quiet enough that you can talk easily, the service is terrific; overall a great experience! We will go back to try out additional menu items...a lot looks good."

  • "The ambience and food are great. Great selection of appetizers and entrees. Cocktails are fantastic and not your every day run of hte mill - but they have those too if you want them. Wait staff is friendly. When you first walk it you get a great modern fun vibe. The rooms go on quite unexpectedly. The outdoor dining both front and back look inviting and I will try them next time."

  • "So often when visiting Dayton I have trouble finding a restaurant that is not a chain. Salar was a gamble for us but as my family said "You hit it out of the Park". There were 10 of us with 3 appetizers and 7 different entrees each one was outstanding. The food was exceptional!!! The only problem was our waitress who started out very attentive left us high and dry during the meal. Additional drink orders were not taken and water glasses were bone dry. I think she was just swamped with tables all at once which was unfortunate because I would have given Salar an "outstanding" all the way around!!!"

  • "My date and I had agreat time. We both consider ourselves foodies and we really liked the menu selection. We had the pork belly apetizer, the Ahi tuna salad, and the entree was sole. Everything we ordered was very well prepared and delicious. Our waiter was very informative and timely. We also liked the location of the restaurant and are already making plans to return. Another bonus was the valet parking. We were able to go to the comedy club right across the street and leave our car parked at the restaurant."

  • "I had the vegan white bean scallops and they were seriously to die for- the best meal I've had in a very long time. My Vesper cocktail was awesome as well. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Recently went here for a date, and didn't really have any complaints. The place is a lot larger than its seems. From the window you only see maybe 50 seats, but the resturant is much larger. Food wise, we had the Duck Ravioli and Pork Filet. The pork was good, but without the sauce it would not be all that great. The mashe potatoes were very good with the dish. The Duck Ravioli was EXCELLENT, I would highly recommend this dish. Even if you have never had duck before, you can thoroughly enjoy this. We also had the fried calamari as an app, which was ok. The breading did not provide much flavor. They weren't greasey or anything, just not very flavorful. Servered with what was essentially Mayo-chup. Kind of cheapened the dish. Good overall."
