and really friendly. He took the time to give us a really personalized review when we asked him questions. We also got to do happy hour on Tuesday night, and Stephen Lyman introduced us to our first drink of Shōchū (an expert on the topic actually!). The food was also great- we did the tasting menu. Totally worth the money."

No food here was ordinary... In a
good way. I'm a picky eater, was a little nervous to try some of the food, but so happy I did. Everything was delicious, most notably the chicken. The rice pots were the icing on the cake and the desserts were fantastic. Highly recommended."

Great Sake list, and food is
surprisingly good! Everything we had was very tasty; uni crostini, renkon chips, pork bun, and oyster rice (which takes 50 mins to prepare). The customer segment seems to be relatively young, such as college students, but the ambiance was not uncomfortable even for us. When the shochu that my husband ordered was gone, they made recommendation for substitute, and it was good. They seemed to be knowledgeable enough about sake and shochu."

My group of friends went for
Japanese restaurant week however they did not offer any restaurant week specialties. We were quite disappointed as we were here for the specialties for Japan restaurant week and they only offered the their 'specialty' on their regular menu; Overall it's a great experience but I don't suggest going with a group of people as it is pricey."

Get the Egg on Egg on Egg! Uni,
roe & eggs -- served in a sea urchin shell. Luscious and delicious! The food was definitely the star of the experience. We went in a group of 4 and decided to order various snacks, small plates and one main dish to share. Throughout dinner, we seemed to have 3 different servers & they weren't necessarily communicating, so we waited half an hour for beers and the timing of dishes being brought out for our group. The snacks and small plates were almost all very special - even the fried lotus chips had an interesting dusting of laver powder. Don't miss out on the Egg on Egg on Egg. I'd also recommend getting the homemade tofu, the menma (vegetables) , and even the kale salad was delicious!"

Was there for Valentines day and
had their prefix menu. Everything was perfectly prepared and was out of this world. This place is definitely a gem and would probably end up paying double as much in a more pretentious setting. Would definitely frequent more often."

The good was fantastic at Sakamai!

WE were pleasantly surprised by
most of the dishes. However, when you factor in service it took away from the entire dining experience. The servers were slow, inattentive and unenthusiastic about making recommendations and aiding in our desire to consume beverages quickly and with our food.."

Some great small plates but did
not like the more expensive rice pot (large plate) we got- the trout and mushroom rice pot which was raved about on Yelp wasn't really great at all, and worst of all, the trout tasted so dry and flavorless! Would go once just for the fun ambience."

Had a wonderful dinner here with
my dad, though I think we over indulged! The drinks are great- unique and not light on the booze and masterfully shaken. The service is not only professional, but beautifully classy- my dad's drinks were poured from a gin glass with a giant ice cube in it through a cocktail strainer, The food, while a little rushed after repeated asking for it to slow down is nothing short of creative, inventive and delicious. The chawanmushi and egg on egg were at risk of being repetitive but were different and we loved everything we ate except the yuba dumplings- give it a pass, tastes like every other Chinese dumpling you'll ever eat. So good job guys! My dad was also pleased that the GM recognized him. We'll be back."

At first impression, this place is
unpresuming, looks like coolish sushi hangout for 20 somethings.... . But our first impression was wrong. There were some dishes that were not only very creative, but achieved flavour, texture and overall balance in a way very few dishes of the top sushi places in New York city are able to produce for 3 times the price. The egg on egg on egg was playful; the raw pieces of fish felt hours from the ocean and were garnished in such a delicately complimentary way to the flavor of the fish.... The octopus was a treat to go back for.....And the main dishes we had were also excellent. There were a few " misses", like the dumpling meat balls...which although not bad at all, seemed way bellow the rest of the meal."

I had dinner at Sakamai with a
friend of mine. I am a chef and she is a pastry chef. The servers were aloof. We had to flag them down for everything. The appetizers were just OK and too small for the price. The only thing that was great was the egg on egg on egg. It's scrambled egg with sea urchin and caviar(hard to go wrong there). The main course was a rice bowl with wild mushrooms, which was one of the worst entrees I have ever had. It was basically just a bowl of dry rice with a few mushrooms in it, and it cost us $30. We didn't bother with dessert. Overall it was way too expensive for what it was and the service was very poor."

The food is excellent! One of the
best restaurant in NY (and I go out a lot for dinner!) I like the low profile atmosphere, how to eat excellent food in a very normal little, casual restaurant. Nothing pretentious but clean and easy, LES atmosphere We can even hear ourselves talking! It is fusion food: japanese of course, mixed with spanish high level components. The egg on egg on egg is amazing. Not a single dish was average. Not cheap but totally worth!"

Opted for ala carte instead of
prix fixe. Sake flight is an excellent deal - $15 for 3 sake generous pours. Egg on Egg on Egg - I had thought it would be too rich. It is, but not the gagging-kind of decadence. House made tofu was the best tofu ever - if tofu tasted like that, more people would be eating it & not begrudgingly so. We had all of the crudo - Madai was excellent. The oysters were excellent - my favorite was the yuzu foam. We finished our meal with the wild mushroom rice. Very generous with mushrooms - it was excellent! I thoroughly enjoy food where main ingredient is highlighted ever so gently , with the most minimal treatments of seasoning. Beautiful space... beautiful food... beautiful experience."

Excellent. My friend and I
genuinely enjoyed our meal here. Our server was exceptionally attentive and awesome! We were provided with great recommendations for the plates and beverages. As for the beverages, sake in particular; my friend was absolutely thrilled that his glass was filled to the brim! Big thumbs up! And our bites were delicious! The cream cheese anchovy had good depth, their spicy harami had great flavor with a good kick, the egg on egg on egg is a must try, and the roasted duck breast was phenomenal. I work a few stops away from this establishment. I shall definitely return sometime after a long day/evening and unwind here. There are other items I wish to taste! A neighborhood charm in LES."

To begin with, they had exactly
the cocktail I wanted - I asked if there was anything with Yuzu and Shiso combo. The waiter was actually surprised that they had never met a customer which I nailed the drink. I, too was happy that they had exactly I wanted! We were also very happy with the food that we had. Although the food is not the traditional Japanese cuisine, we were quite content with the contemporary style they served. I highly recommend this place for a couple, or a group of friends!"

If you go to Sakamai, you must try
egg on egg on egg (sea urchin, caviar and scrambled egg). I recommend that you order the wild mushroom rice (it does take a long time; 50 mins or so but so worth it). The service was fantastic and the food was delicious! I can't say this an affordable dining place but it is reasonable for the quality of food you're getting. I'll definitely be coming back"

They have quite a list of sake and
shochu. It is a great place for after work drinking and having some delicious Japanese tapas. It can get crowded or loud when they have events going on but it's still a nice place to chill with friends or bring a date for some nice drinks. The staff are friendly...kind of hard to flag them when they're busy but overall, nice hangout place."

Each small plate and snack we
ordered was fantastic. One note on the fried chicken - very tasty, but not exactly "fried" in the same way you would expect. Definitely go with the specialty cocktails. Service was top notch - friendly and attentive, but there is no A/C, so make sure you dress lightly in the summer."

Since it was the first time to try
SakaMai, we tried to order many dishes as sampler. Renkon chips, Oyster trio, Eggs on eggs, Iberico Pork, Pork bun, Fried caramari, Harami and Steak etc. Everything was delicious and uniquely served. Especially my recommendation is Iberico pork and Egg on egg. I want to come back again to try some other dishes. Varous local beers and Sake from Japan are available but I wish they had regular Japanese beers as well."

Our server was extremely
knowledgeable about both the beverages and the food. The host (who I believe was also the owner) was warm and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious. I could eat the egg on egg on egg every night. Also loved the oyster trio, each with a different topping that created a complex flavor. Sakamai is truly a hidden gem, and we will be back."

I'm not sure if its because we had
an early reservation, but I felt that the food did not meet my expectations. The best thing we ordered was the Uni Crostini. What we liked the least was the fried chicken confit. The service was great, but the food was a little underwhelming. I want to come back later in the evening to see if maybe the food will be better due to its high turnover rate? As well as to check out the bar."

This place fills up quickly, so
definitely make a reservation beforehand if you plan to show up after 7 even during the week. The menu is short but all top notch. I can't say enough good things about the Oyster Trio and Egg on Egg on Egg. Presentation is pretty elaborate here but not too over the top to the extent of pretension. Wait staffs were attentive, food and booze were fabulous. I highly recommend this place but be prepared that it will cost you quite a bit."

Alas, the first hour of our dinner
was plagued by a large in the next room over that included a half-dozen shrieking children. Literally. And the group had already eaten. They just lingered and lingered and lingered. The staff couldn't get them to quiet down, or didn't try hard enough. I've got small kids myself, but even I was taken aback by the noise level. Food: okay, but nothing amazing, especially not at that price point. The $30 wild mushroom rice pot is one of the most overpriced things I've eaten in a long time. Small, bland, blah. Sigh."

Read lots of reviews on Yelp and
other sites. Food was fine but not worth $18 for Egg on Egg on Egg or the Bone Marrow & Steak Tartar. The scrambled egg hid the taste of the uni, and the caviar surprizingly wasn't salty on the Egg on Egg on Egg. The Marrow is boiled or steamed, which is ok, but about a tablespoon of it at the end of the day. Tartar was bland. The best dish was the Iberico pork. Portions were small, even the cocktails (3 -4 sips then done). We ate pizza about 2 hrs later & we had a $400 bill for 4 people. Just for comparison, we consider Sushi Gari, Perla, Scarpetta, The Modern, to be worth their value. Sadly, it was just ok."

really a foodie paradise. every
detail considered when making each and every dish. seems like the chef loved each dish that was sent out. impeccable and creative presentation. The waitresses were unbelievably knowledgeable, smart, efficient and fun. food was definitely special but at the same time a perfect place for an ordinary delicious night out. get the sake as well... well versed in all sakes, these waitresses will really help you navigate, esp if you are new to sake. or an expert for that matter."

I clicked on "Notable Wine List"
since there is no equivalent option for sake. They have a very good selection and will guide you through. The food was very good - a couple of dishes were great (egg on egg on egg is delicious) and a couple were just ok (the tartare was slightly chewy and lacked flavor, and should not be served with that dense, sweet toast). This is the perfect place to have some sake at the bar with their delicious bar snacks."

SakaMai is more a saki bar
(excellent saki menu) than a restaurant. However, all the dishes were very good and carefully prepared. The seating is better for drinking than for dining."
