Sakagura does a good job replicating the feel of izakayas in japan, with a great selection of dishes using authentic, fresh ingredients. A bit expensive, considering the size of the dishes, but worth the cash for an occasional treat."

  • "As someone who has traveled to Japan, it's nice to know there's a place in NYC that can bring me back there on occassion. The service is what you would expect from a typical Japanese place, I just wish they were a little quicker during the lunch rush. The food was delicious, especially the hot soba and sake don. The pickles they serve with it are good, but it'd be nice if they had a little more variety. Everything considered, I will definitely be back for another lunch soon."

  • "Lovely food, especially tuna, eel, cod, and eggplant. The squid was chewy. The potato donut which was bland even with salt. The saki selection is wonderful. This was my first time and the service was awful. My water glass was empty for 30 min. We ordered saki 3 times before it came. It was too warm and I felt overheated. I will try again but if serviceis bad again I will not return or recommend. It was an uneven experience."

  • "I went for lunch with a friend and had the Tuesday special: whitebait over rice with hot soba noodles, pickles, and tea. I had never had whitebait and did not know what to expect. The fish had a lovely salty, briny taste and the rice was cooked perfectly. The soba was nice and chewy and was served in a flavorful broth. The pickles were excellent as always. I was quite full afterward and had spent $11 or so - what I could easily have spent on a mediocre sandwich elsewhere. You can't have a quick lunch here, but if you have time for a special treat, I would recommend it."

  • "The food was very different! we went as a group of girls, it was difficult to find a menu online to check over to see if we would have liked anything. We liked most of our dishes but it was not sushi which is what we thought and it was very particular kinds of food. The service was okay the staff was not all too friendly and being that the food is so particular it woul dhave been nice to have a friendly server explain some of the dishes maybe recommend some that are popular? Also there is no alcohol other than a LARGE sake list plum wine and beer which we drank none of the above!"

  • "I've told all of my friends about the "Secret Japanese Restaurant" by Grand Central, but nothing prepares anyone for walking past the security guard in an East Midtown tower, going down the maintenance stairs to the basement, and apparently going through a wormhole to emerge on the other side of the planet in a Tokyo izakaya. Izakayas are to Japan what pubs are to Britain, and Sakagura brings legit izakaya fare up to the discriminating standards of NYC foodies. I have yet to be less than enamored with a single dish on the menu. My Jewish boyfriend tried my braised pork belly, loved it, and ordered his own; enough said. Ask the knowledgeable waiters and bartenders to introduce you to your new favorite sake, like my Matsu no Midori."

We think a better description would be Japanese "Tapas" since most of the "Hot" and "Cold" dishes resembled nothing akin to the rice-based sushi rolls or sashimi dishes most diners think of when the word "sushi" is used. Very inventive and delicious stuff here, so we were very pleased, but it was not what we were expecting. The sake menu is mind-numbingly extensive and spans all price ranges. If you love sake, this is your restaurant."

  • "This is a really popular place. Anyone who wants to have a try should made a reservation first, or you might have to wait. The food there is good. I only chose one plate of sashimi and noodle. The sashimi is very fresh. The noodle tastes good. But I am not sure whether I should put all ingredients and vegetables into the bowl or not."
