Diner Reviews
  • "This was our first visit to Saison, but it won't be our last...great vibe and incredible food and wine menus...very creative! We ordered several things off the menu, as well as the tasty fried chicken special. Highly-recommended!"

  • "This was one of the best (definitely top of the list) restaurants we've visited in the City. We've been making it a habit to seek out and enjoy the finest dining in Richmond, and I highly recommend Saison. The creativity is truly amazing, and you'd be very pleasantly surprised by what the chef and owner can do with "beets" and "chicken" - I know I was. Go there, and enjoy a cocktail, Beets by Jay - my fav!"

  • "Quaint, fun atmosphere. All four of us in our party ordered different entrees, and had a nibble off eachother's plates. The lamb chops were fork tender! Delicious!"

  • "Amazingly creative menu, but very meat focused. As a vegetarian, disappointed to see only one meatless entree. Fantastic cocktails. Very small spot, be prepared to wait for a table. Very cute decor, loved use of vintage mags for menu books."

  • "Very creative and interesting items on the menu. The nasturtium-strawberry salad was a refreshing start. I enjoyed the seafood pozole (soup) which was loaded with clams, mussels and shrimp plus puffy hominy in a rich broth. Would have loved to have some bread to soak up the broth, though. Hubby enjoyed a quail starter with mole sauce and then catfish with mole sauce. They also have a unique list of craft beers, creative cocktails and wines. I enjoyed an unusual dry cider from the Basque region of Spain. The desserts are also creative & wonderful. Enjoyed the dense, dark banana cake with gingerbread ice cream."

  • "Heard great things about saison. I will say that food had good flavor, but was lacking in the portion size. The "large plate" was lacking. Another downfall to the dining experience was the noise level of bar patrons. I know this cannot be controlled but it does take away from the atmosphere. If you are just looking for literally a bite to eat then this is a the place. Cocktails were good as well but also overpriced, for small "gastro" macro drinks. I do admire that they support local farms. Not bashing the place, just being honest."

  • "From start to finish a high quality restaurant experience. We had to change our reservation at last minute and that was accomplished politely and promptly. We were seated right away, waited on attentively, and served professionally at every stage. The shrimp remoulade appetizer, turnip salad, and entrees were excellent. Banana bread dessert may be the best dessert I have ever had. I would definitely return to this restaurant and recommend it to others."

  • "Great food with some interesting options on the cocktail front."

  • "Very good food and service. Very noisy for most of the meal."

  • "First off the cocktails are incredible here. Excellent draft beer/local/micro brew choices, and we had an amazing Tempranillo bottle of wine from España for our main course. I really appreciate the boldness of the menu items. We had appetizers for dinner. The fried hominy is amazing to contrast my Rye Manhattan. I highly recommend the Marrow and Billy bread, the Oxtail Sopes, (no tails-fear not), and the Pupusas. All great food and excellent dessert. The bathroom was clean and has chalk board painted walls with chalk supplied, so you can even fulfill the inner tagger in you."

  • "I had the new salad special with strawberries. It was so fabulous. Really fresh and different. I hope they make it part of the regular menu. As an entree I had the vegetable-rice bowl. It too was really great. The flavors were so different! Service was mediocre at best. I know it was a busy Saturday night, but we were seated around 7 when the restaurant was half full, and we weren't asked about drinks until at least ten minutes after sitting down, and only then once I flagged someone down. Cocktails are delish!"

  • "Came with a party of three for drinks and dinner and was underwhelmed. Simply put: not accommodating! Food was decent, but was unable to make any substitutions to my meal. Came at the end of happy hour and b/c the place is so small and the happy hour crowd was in full effect, my party and I had a hard time having a conversation due to the noise. Was surprised that they we're not able to handle basic drink requests (no olives for a martini, no Tanqueray for a gin & tonic, and their homemade tonic tasted like "fizzy OJ", which made my GT taste very different than I am used to. Maybe my underwhelming experience was due to my expectation for the place; however, I don't plan on going back. Only one member of my party rated it highly."

  • "We waited by the door for five minutes when only three tables were occupied and a few people were scattered at the bar. A hostess finally wandered over––and then wandered around for another five minutes before returning to say she had no reservation and that, no, she couldn't seat us. But we did have a reservation, confirmed through OpenTable. Really a drag. Tough to go back, even though the food is good."

  • "We loved the vibe. Our waiter could not have been nicer or more informed. But the food was a little too spicy across the board, including dessert! We would certainly return for a burger and beer."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our meal this past weekend. Had a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. Service was great. Met the owners, who took the time to talk about their vision and food passions. Loved that they are JMU grads! Had the fried corn, amazing turnip salad, Virginia oysters, and the drum! All delicious but drum was the favorite. Also tried house specialty cocktail - End of Days - worth it!"

  • "Best burger in Richmond, bar none. Burger Bach, Can Can and Lumiere (at the Jefferson) have good burgers, but they're not as good as Saison's. Get it medium rare with goat cheese. I hear adding bacon is awesome, too, but I haven't tried it. The only draw back was that we were seated a little late, but since they only have 32 seats, if a party decides to take their time they can't really help the delay."

  • "Saison is an example of an outstanding independent restaurant in Richmond, VA. It offers great food interestingly prepared. An amazing cocktail list -- truly outstanding -- good wine and wonderful beer and a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy and savor. Service is laid-back but attentive. I had roasted chicken and it was delicious. My husband had steak and it was tasty. We both had incredible cocktails to start. It was a wonderful experience."

  • "Loved the sweet potato ice cream. Had an enjoyable experience with a few close friends. Not a good place for a larger group. Great cocktails!"

  • "had heard about Saison so decided to try it for dinner out with another couple. The menu was very limited and they were out of several items on their beer list. The place was quite loud and the seating not particularly comfortable. . there are better options out there"

  • "The place was buzzing with a casual, lively crowd and we felt like we were in the new "it"place. We were greeted at the door and promptly seated for our reservation, which was a good thing. Not a good thing was the 25 minutes after that moment till our first cocktail was served. Unlike others, we were totally underwhelmed by the overly spiced fried corn, which should be a free bar food for all not an "appetizer" (as has been suggested before). My "medium plate" ribs tasted quite good but were nothing special and were "no frills" in their presentation. The star entree was a cobia fish dish. Yum. Its great to see the Richmond dining scene continue to thrive and we will check this one off our list and keep testing and tasting other places."

  • "We have been visiting all of the "Best New Restaurants" designated by Richmond Magazine during the Xmas/New Year's holidays. We have been pleasantly surprised by the wonderful selections offered by Richmond. Saison was a delight for interesting cocktails for sure. But the dinner selections were extremely limited and way overpriced for the contents of the dishes. There were four of us and each was underwhelmed. Selections of wines were also limited and way overpriced. So the drinks were great and interesting. We wish the food and wine were also for our return."

  • "After eating there only one time, my husband and I agree that Saison is immediately at the top of our list. Everything was very creative and absolutely awesome! We will most definitely be back in a matter of days!"

  • "I made a reservation for 8:15 on New Years Eve. When I arrived at the restaurant they appeared not to have a record of my reservation even though I received a confirmation email from open table and the reservation appeared on my open table account. After waiting approximately half an hour, the host showed us to seats at the bar. When we asked for a table they responded that they could not guarantee tables for reservations. This happened to several other parties as well. I would not recommend this restaurant because of the low level of service and their practice of allowing customers to make reservations that the restaurant has no intention of honoring."

  • "My fiancé and I haven't been to Saison since they opened, and we came for NYE. They were packed - it was hard to even walk to the table because it was so crowded. We showed up at 7:30, only to have to wait another 25 minutes for our table. Not their fault - people were staying later than they normally would. However, we couldn't even find a seat at the bar, as it was packed double-wide. Once we finally sat down, we were there for 2 hours. Thankfully we were having a good time, but the service was slow. Both of our meals came out tasting absolutely delicious, but my steak was room temperature, as were her cheddar grits. The dessert was the showcase of our meal. Not the best experience this time, but we still enjoyed it, and will return."

  • "There are good restaurants: friendly staff, comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, and food that you feel you can't make at home. Then there are REALLY good ones, that combine all the above with flavors that are truly unique and make each mouthful an experience worthy of attention. That was our experience at Saison. We had two great mixed drinks, one was the muddy mule. On our second visit there, we were thrilled with the wonderfully tender spare rib dish that was the special that night. Had the chocolate beignet dessert for a second time and was not disappointed."

  • "Saisin is a small-ish spot in Jackson Ward. The menu is creative, the delicious food is attractively presented, and the service is among the best in the city. It appears that every server knows everything about each dish that is offered, a rare occurence these days. It can get a little loud, but that is a small price to pay for such an excellent dining experience. Highly recommended!"
